Stephen King may be best known for his horror stories involving monsters and murder, but he just as often deals with headier, more mature themes of alcoholism and domestic abuse. About the former, King can speak from experience, having wrestled with substance addiction throughout the 1980s. About the former, he luckily didn't experience it first-hand but is drawn to stories of children who are victimized by their alleged caregivers. This was certainly true of his summertime epic "It," which featured children's domestic turmoil as a parallel to the supernatural monster stalking them.
As such, King is sensitive to stories that mishandle themes of abuse. There is a certain kind of Hollywood melodrama that explores the psychological trauma experienced by abuse victims, but that wraps up their stories in a neat little bow, declaring that abuse can simply be "gotten over" with a few trips to a shrink and some kind of hackneyed reconciliation.

Stephen King is an opinionated fellow. Stroll through the fiction aisles of your local bookstore and examine the covers of newish novels, and you probably won't have to search long to find one bearing praise from Stephen King -- which is touching because, in this age of distracted everything, it's nice to see one of the world's most prominent authors exhorting people to lose themselves in a book.
King isn't always a ray of sunshine though. He's infamous for his dislike of Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" film adaptation, and hasn't held back on other cinematic interpretations of his novels. And when Entertainment Weekly started giving King column space in its printed pages back in the mid 2000s to rant and rave about all things pop culture, he was unsparing with his hatred for the latest music by Jewel, Beyoncé, and Celine Dion while also unloading both barrels on prestige...

Few actors in Hollywood are as respected and admired as Denzel Washington. After getting his start in acting back in the late 1970s and having his first breakout role in the medical drama St. Elsewhere, in which he played Dr. Phillip Chandler on all six seasons, Washington has played a number of iconic characters in a variety acclaimed movies. Some of his most memorable early movies include Glory (1989), Malcolm X (1992), The Hurricane (1999), and, of course, Training Day (2001). In fact, he has been nominated for 10 Oscars so far, winning two, for Glory and Training Day.
Starting in the mid-2000s, a career shift occurred and Washington became something of an action star alongside his continued work in more dramatic productions such as 2002's Antwone Fisher, 2007's The Great Debaters, and 2012's Flight. This new phase of Washington's career could largely be considered to start with Man on Fire in 2004. A handful of years later,...

Not only does the great and discerning Denzel Washington have a commanding presence with an electric charisma and fiery delivery, but he's also one of cinema's greatest orators. His background in theatre and Shakespeare gives him a powerful control over his speech, and his words flow trippingly off the tongue in ways that perfectly fit his characters. We've recently seen Denzel Washington have a lot of fun with his scene-stealing performance in "Gladiator II" as a conniving arms dealer who plans to take over Rome, like the way he over-enunciates the word "politics-uh," poking fun at the current bureaucracy.
This aspect of his performance style made him ideal for his role in "The Great Debaters" as Professor Melvin Tolson, a mercurial debate coach who encourages his students from a tiny, all-Black college in Texas to go up against Harvard University's championship team. Controlling pitch, using pauses, and clearly articulating...

Last month saw streaming platforms settle into their annual cozy season with new fall TV shows and autumn film favorites. This December, Hulu and Disney+ are hunkering down with premieres for several animated TV series, a solid selection of holiday fare, and feel-good movies both old and new.
Disney+ will bring its classic characters together for “Mickey and the Very Many Christmases” as well as “Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade.” It will also premiere “The Simpsons Christmas Double Episode,” “Doctor Who: Joy to the World,” and “CMA Country Christmas” to honor the season. Top non-holiday picks include the return of “Marvel Animation’s What If…?” (kicking off December 22 with new episodes premiering daily for eight days), “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” and “Elton John: Never Too Late.”
Over at Hulu, the divisive new horror flick “Cuckoo” starring Hunter Schafer is set to stream alongside a robust catalogue of various other movies.

Early on in Denzel Washington's brilliant career, he gave critics a preview of how he was going to play the movie star game going forward -- and they weren't pleased. In between making acclaimed dramas like "Cry Freedom," "Glory," and "Mississippi Masala," Washington cut loose and sought to build up some box office cred in formulaic action movies like "Heart Condition" and "Ricochet." Reviewers who viewed Washington as a major star in the making were disappointed with, if not aghast at, his choices. What a colossal waste of the man's time and talent, they reasoned, to run around in his boxer shorts after John Lithgow in full glazed ham mode. Then he'd go and make "Malcolm X," and everyone would hush up until a frivolity like "Virtuosity" dropped.
Washington had it right. If he wanted to ensure more movies like "Malcolm X" or "Philadelphia" got made further down the line,...

Once you've conquered Hollywood by becoming one of the most respected and celebrated actors in the industry, what else is there to do but become a celebrated director, too? That's exactly what Denzel Washington did. Having received his first Oscar nomination for playing South African activist Steve Biko in Richard Attenborough's 1987 effort "Cry Freedom", Denzel then went on to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in what Rotten Tomatoes maintains is Washington's best film, 1989's "Glory."
While "Glory," which currently has a 95% Rt score, was certainly a high point for Denzel, the man still had decades of hits and critically-acclaimed classics ahead of him. After that 1989 triumph, for example, he went on to earn another Oscar for his role as corrupt LAPD detective Alonzo Harris in 2001's "Training Day." But between winning Hollywood's highest honor twice, Washington was also proving his ability to...

Once upon a time in late night television, it was customary for talk shows to fill up their couches as the evening's episode progressed. The first guest would do their segment and then move down a spot on the adjacent couch, making room for the next guest to yap with Johnny Carson, Dick Cavett or whoever. What with the barnacle presence of sidekick Ed McMahon, Carson's couch could get especially crowded some nights. Sometimes this got tense (like the time Burt Reynolds inexplicably went after "Double Dare" host Mark Summers on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno"); sometimes it was chaotic comedy bliss (which is what happens when you ask Carson to rein in the irrepressible duo of Robin Williams and Jonathan Winters); and sometimes it was just plain surreal.
This tradition started to fade out of fashion in the 1980s when "Late Night with David Letterman" introduced its one-guest-at-a-time approach.

As Denzel Washington continues to flirt with onscreen retirement, an old friend recently got him to serve at least one more performance.
The Academy Award winner said he was “tremendously inspired” by director Ridley Scott‘s upcoming sequel Gladiator II, which premieres Nov. 22 in theaters, while hinting that he’s nearing the end of his acting career.
“There are very few films left for me to make that I’m interested in, and I have to be inspired by the filmmaker, and I was tremendously inspired by Ridley,” he told Empire after last working with Scott on 2007’s American Gangster.
“We had a great go-round the first go-round and here we are. He’s engaged. He’s excited about life and his next film. He’s an inspiration,” added Washington. “We should all want to feel like that at 86.”

Denzel Washington's directorial career has seen a mix of successes and failures, with A Journal For Jordan being his biggest box office flop. Despite critical acclaim for earlier films like "Fences," A Journal For Jordan failed to find an audience and earned only $6.7 million. Factors like bad reviews, Jordan's action movie reputation, and a predictable plot contributed to the movie's underperformance.
Although Denzel Washingtons impressive career included a number of movies that under-performed, his biggest recent failure wasnt one of the stars acting roles. As surprising as it might seem, the deservedly acclaimed Denzel Washington has a long history of movies that underperformed financially. His movie debut, 1981s Carbon Copy, failed to meet expectations, while one of Denzel Washingtons best movies lost over $20 million at the box office when Fallen was released in 1998. Despite the failures, Washingtons generational talent ensures that the actors reputation has never taken a hit.

Sean Diddy Combs was at the center of a movie based on his protege Biggie Smalls called Notorious. The feature had Antwone Fisher star Derek Luke portray the music mogul. But initially, Luke declined to play the part.

Luke had some strong reservations against playing Diddy in Notorious. The biopic would follow Bad Boys artist B.I.G. from childhood and on to his ascent to rap superstardom. Luke would become aware of the project way before the film was fully realized. But at the time, Luke was given very little details about what to expect from the feature.
“One of Puff’s guards sent word that they wanted to holla and I was like, ‘Word, okay.’ So I met him, greeted him, nothing to it,” Luke said in an interview with The Breakfast Club.

A Training Day prequel movie needs Denzel Washington's involvement, but not necessarily in the lead actor role due to his age. The best path forward for a Training Day prequel would involve recasting Washington's role as Alonzo with a rising talent. Denzel Washington should consider directing the Training Day prequel, especially if his son, John David Washington, takes over the role of Alonzo.
A Training Day prequel movie needs Denzel Washington's involvement but not necessarily in the lead actor role. The 2001 action-crime drama from director Antoine Fuqua remains one of Washington's most iconic movie roles in his illustrious career. However, with over twenty years passing since the release of the classic movie, there are concerns about the 68-year-old Washington's age. It's improbable that the acclaimed actor could convincingly pull off a younger version of his infamous character Alonzo in an anticipated prequel movie.

Derek Luke always knew he wanted to be a hero — or rather, play one. But when the opportunity for him to join the Marvel universe arose in 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger,” he wasn’t so sure — even after his agent, the late Ed Limato, insisted.

But Washington didn’t exactly know how she ended up in the film.

Update: I have rightly been called out for listing Braveheart as Mel Gibson’s first film when he actually directed a film prior to that called The Man Without a Face in 1993. So I guess the results are slightly skewed, but really, wasn’t Braveheart the first Mel Gibson directed film we all saw?!

All you need to do to understand the animating injustice of Viola Davis's career is scan through her Wikipedia biography, and note the puzzling dynamic of going from Tony-winning leads on Broadway in the late 1990s and early 2000s to, at best, supporting turns in studio movies. How was this Juilliard-trained dynamo who routinely set New York City stages ablaze getting relegated to undernourished roles in films starring actors she could dust straight off the screen?
If you're at all aware of how things work in the United States of America, you know the answer. Davis certainly does, and she shouted it from the mountaintop at a Woman in the World event in 2018:
"I have a career that's probably comparable to Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, Sigourney Weaver. They all came out of Yale; they came out of Julliard; they came out of NYU. They had the same path as me.

Denzel Washington never saw a production of “Macbeth” in high school or college. So when he was offered the titular role in Shakespeare’s great tragedy, which he’d only read in the past two years, he wanted to make sure that he could wrap his head around how director Joel Coen would shoot the film with him and Frances McDormand as Lady Macbeth. “Let’s talk about the black and white of it all,” Washington recalls saying to Coen in an early conversation.

Michael B. Jordan is preparing to make his directorial debut with “Creed III,” the latest chapter in Adonis Creed’s saga, which is set to hit theaters Thanksgiving 2022.
When news broke that Jordan would take the helm of the franchise, in addition to starring as the boxing champ, the first-time feature filmmaker released a statement explaining why he wanted to take on the challenge.
“Directing has always been an aspiration, but the timing had to be right,” Jordan stated. “‘Creed III’ is that moment — a time in my life where I’ve grown more sure of who I am, holding agency in my own story, maturing personally, growing professionally and learning from the Greats like Ryan Coogler, most recently Denzel Washington, and other top tier directors I respect. In a year-end movie landscape marked, on the one hand, by a stream of prestige adult dramas that struggle more than ever to find actual adults to see them, and on the other hand by the kind of oversize fantasy event films whose job it now is to keep the industry alive, “A Journal for Jordan” feels like an odd movie out more than it might have, say, 20 years ago. Back in the 1980s, it would have been right down the middle of the plate. Today, it seems like a film out of time. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
It’s the fourth feature directed by Denzel Washington, and unlike his last one, the epic and lacerating “Fences” (2016), this one takes us back to the life-affirming feel-good middlebrow sincerity of his first two films as a director, “Antwone Fisher” (2002) and “The Great Debaters” (2007). Derek Luke will star in “Rare Objects,” reuniting with Katie Holmes nearly two decades after the pair appeared together in 2003’s “Pieces of April.”
Holmes not only stars in “Rare Objects,” but will produce and direct the movie as well. She also co-wrote its screenplay, which is based on Kathleen Tessaro’s novel of the same name, with Phaedon Papadopoulos. Julia Mayorga, the breakout star of Showtime’s “American Rust,” is part of the ensemble.
Luke will also appear in another (still-untitled) film directed by Holmes alongside Jim Sturgess and Melissa Leo.
Luke is an Independent Spirit Award-winning actor for his debut performance in the 2002 film “Antwone Fisher,” which was directed by Denzel Washington. He also starred in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Friday Night Lights” and in Spike Lee’s “Miracle at St. Anna,” and appeared in Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why” and FX’s “The Americans.”

Over the course of his long career, Denzel Washington has directed five separate projects. Four of them are films, such as “Antwone Fisher,” “The Great Debaters,” “Fences,” and “A Journal For Jordan,” but the other project is something many people don’t realize he did—an episode of “Grey’s Anatomy.” And it appears that Washington’s time on the ABC drama series wasn’t as smooth sailing as you might expect, as he had a pretty big blowout with lead actress, Ellen Pompeo.

Denzel Washington’s directorial career includes Oscar winner “Fences” and box office hits like “Antwone Fisher.” Some fans might not realize that it also includes a 2016 episode of the ABC medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy,” which remains the only television Washington has directed in his career. Washington directed the 12th season episode “The Sound of Silence.” On her podcast, “Tell Me with Ellen Pompeo,” the “Grey’s” lead actress was joined by former co-star Patrick Dempsey and revealed a fight occurred on set between Washington and herself after she went off-script in a scene.
“I was like, ‘Look at me when you apologize. Look at me.’ And that wasn’t in the dialogue,” Pompeo told Dempsey. “And Denzel went ham on my ass. He was like, ‘I’m the director. Don’t you tell him what to do. I was like, ‘Listen, motherfucker, this is my show. This is my set.

"How are you so kind?" Here's yet another outstanding stop-motion animated short film we just have to feature. Fish Boy is a short film made by filmmaker Anita Bruvere as her final graduation project at the National Film & Television School in the UK. It's described as a "surrealist tale about the all-encompassing nature of living with guilt." The poetic short features a guilt-ridden "Fish Boy" and a woman named Laura - voiced by Hugh Skinner and Emily Taaffe. Fish Boy lives in darkness, his guilt about the past slowly consuming him. His girlfriend Laura is a light of hope in his dark world. But despite his efforts... his past continues to chase him, putting them both in danger. This short has some really mesmerizing texture and designs. The water & waves especially are so stunning with all the different fabrics in motion. Watch below. Thanks to Short of the Week for the tip on this.

Charlie Robinson, a prolific actor who played the clerk on Night Court for most of the NBC sitcom’s run and before that was a regular on its lauded series Buffalo Bill, died Sunday of cancer complications at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 75.
His manager, Lisa Disante, told Deadline that Robinson died of cardiac arrest with multisystem organ failures due to septic shock, and metastatic adenocarcinoma.
Robinson racked up more than 125 TV and film credits — including an impressive five series-regular roles — during a half-century career that stretched into 2021. He got his start guesting on such 1970s-80s series as Cannon, The White Shadow, Lou Grant, St. Elsewhere and Hill Street Blues and the sequel miniseries Roots: The Next Generation.
