The acclaimed Danish period horror drama The Girl with the Needle, shot by cinematographer Michal Dymek, took home the Camerimage Film Festival’s Golden Frog Saturday night in Toruń, Poland. The winner was selected by a jury led by two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett.

Camerimage famously celebrates the art of cinematography, so its honors are extended to the directors of photography behind the movies exhibited in its main competition. But this year’s jury made a point of adding a “special mention” for The Girl with the Needle‘s 40-year-old director, Magnus von Horn.

The masterfully realized period thriller is loosely based on the true story of Danish serial killer Dagmar Overbye, who helped impoverished women kill their unwanted children in 1910s Copenhagen.

The Hollywood Reporter‘s contributing film critic, Leslie Felperin, summed up the film as “a dark, urgently timely Danish drama” that’s “like one of those fiendish...

Spain’s MoreThan Films has secured international sales rights outside France to “Listen to the Voices” (“Kouté vwa”), from Brussels/Paris based Maxime Jean-Baptiste, in the run-up to August’s Locarno Film Festival where the film world premieres in Filmmakers of the Present.

Jean-Baptiste’s feature debut, the fiction film tracks young Melrick, 13, who travels from Stains in the Saint-Denis suburb of Paris to spend with his grandmother the summer holiday in Cayenne, the capital of French Guiana.

For Melrick, the summer may well mark him for life. It is a return to his roots, embodied in his desire to learn how to play the drum and become part of a local drum and dance band, Mayouri Tchô Neg. American Cinematographer Ed Lachman will be the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s Camerimage Film Festival.

Lachman was born on March 31, 1946. His grandfather owned several vaudeville theatres in the 1920s, which were later converted into movie houses, co-managed with Lachman’s father, a film theatre distributor who later acquired a small cinema in Boonton, New Jersey.

Lachman’s extensive filmography includes numerous collaborations with directors such as Todd Haynes, Ulrich Seidl (Import/Export), Steven Soderbergh (The Limey and Erin Brockovich), Gregory Nava and Paul Schrader. He served as the cinematographer on Sofia Coppola’s debut feature, The Virgin Suicides, and lensed A Prairie Home Companion, Robert Altman’s last film.

He is a three-time Oscar nominee for Far from Heaven, Carol, and Pablo Larrain’s El Conde.

February––particularly its third week––is all about romance. Accordingly the Criterion Channel got creative with their monthly programming and, in a few weeks, will debut Interdimensional Romance, a series of films wherein “passion conquers time and space, age and memory, and even death and the afterlife.” For every title you might’ve guessed there’s a wilder companion: Alan Rudolph’s Made In Heaven, Soderbergh’s remake, and Resnais’ Love Unto Death. Mostly I’m excited to revisit Francis Ford Coppola’s Youth Without Youth, a likely essential viewing before Megalopolis.

Quinn Donoghue, whose long career as a Hollywood publicist included beating the drum for Superman, Pink Panther and Three Musketeers films, Steven Soderbergh’s The Limey and Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s 21 Grams, has died. He was 86.

Donoghue died Dec. 28 in Los Angeles, his son Alex Donoghue announced.

Donoghue also served as a unit publicist on Norman Jewison’s Fiddler on the Roof (1971) and Jesus Christ Superstar (1973), Jean-Jacques Annaud’s Quest for Fire (1981), Roman Polanski’s Frantic (1988) and Bitter Moon (1992), Michael Caton-Jones’ Rob Roy (1995), Robert Altman’s Kansas City (1996) and Ridley Scott’s Gladiator (2000) and Kingdom of Heaven (2005).

At the time of its 1978 release, "Superman" was one of the most expensive films ever made, boasting a $55 million budget. Following his Golden Bear winner Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn, Romanian writer-director Radu Jude wowed critics again with the satire Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World, which premiered at the Locarno Film Festival earlier this year and won the Special Jury Prize. Wild, hilarious and cryptically profound, it’s a beautiful oddity that solidifies Jude’s name as one of the most creative and bracingly contemporary filmmakers working today.

At the recently concluded Filmfest Hamburg, we had the chance to speak with him about the creation of images, the merits of Tiktok and judging films with Kristen Stewart.

The Film Stage: This is a pretty remarkable film. When you finished it, did you have the feeling that you’d done something special?

With the presumptive demise of physical media, there’s nothing I’m going to miss quite so much as DVD commentary tracks. It’s less the banal puffery and hagiographic nostalgia of 95 percent of them and more the occasional recording on which somebody would unload with two hours of candor, whether it’s Ben Affleck talking Armageddon or the delicate dance performed by Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter Lem Hobbs discussing The Limey.

That Limey commentary track is a spectacular illustration of how great movies can still be made even if two key creative forces aren’t on the same page regarding much of anything. It’s also a reminder of how often the things that Soderbergh does behind the camera aren’t always aligned with whatever might have been the initial goals of whoever wrote the screenplay — and nor need they be, necessarily.

52 years after he became a cult icon by starring in Richard C Sarafian's Vanishing Point, Barry Newman has passed away. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he died of natural causes at NewYork-Presbyterian Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

The Boston-born actor, who originally trained as an anthropologist, appeared on Broadway and had small roles in a number of films and TV series before Vanishing Point made him a star, first in Europe and then in the US. He remained in the industry well into old age, retiring just eight years ago, and his career included appearances in Bowfinger, The Limey and, more recently, What The Bleep Do We Know!? He got back behind the wheel in 1972's Fear Is The Key, and continued to choose thrillers in his later years.

Newman’s wife, Angela, confirmed the news of Newman’s death to The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday. The actor died of natural causes on May 11 at the NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

Newman had a number of smaller screen roles and performed on Broadway until he was cast in the 1971 car chase classic “Vanishing Point”, by director Richard C. Sarafian. He starred as a former race car driver named Kowalski who drives a Dodge Challenger across the US while avoiding cops and getting entangled in a deadly criminal conspiracy.

The film went on to be a cult classic and genre-defining epic that went on to be revered for its action set-pieces and proved to be influential on the next generation of blockbuster filmmakers.

Newman died at Columbia University Irving Medical Center on May 11, according to media reports.

Born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, he took a college course with renowned acting instructor Lee Strasberg, who inspired him to become an actor. After graduating from Brandeis University and serving time in the army, Newman moved to New York City to study with Strasberg.

Newman went on to perform in various Broadway and New York theater shows before moving into feature films like 1971’s “The Lawyer” and, of course, “Vanishing Point,” in which he played Kowalski, a car delivery driver known for transporting hot rods in record time — but with a knack for running into trouble with highway cops.

Steven Soderbergh is a fantastically eclectic filmmaker (you never know where he’s going to go next), but if you look back over his roughly 30 dramatic features it’s telling to consider how many of them are some variety of tricky old-school thriller or film noir powered by suspenseful screw-tightening. I’m talking about the “Ocean’s” trilogy, the ebullient Elmore Leonard adaptation “Out of Sight,” the redneck heist thriller “Logan Lucky,” the deconstructed gangster mystery “The Limey,” the brooding noir “The Underneath,” the small-town grunge noir “Bubble,” the sex-industry noir “The Girlfriend Experience,” and the true-life-bumbler noir “The Informant!” Soderbergh has a prankish side, but the truth is he would have been right at home in the ’40s or ’50 churning out moody black-and-white thrillers like Robert Siodmak or Joseph H. Lewis.

“I can’t believe we’re not still editing this,” Steven Soderbergh joked, at the conclusion of Thursday’s night’s 20th-anniversary screening of “The Limey,” his 1999 hybrid of art film and revenge thriller. Screening in its shiny new 4K restoration, “The Limey” is beloved by indie film fans for its experimental, non-linear editing, which discombobulates the conventions of the genre with unexpected cuts, unusual juxtapositions, and abstract images whose meaning (and relationship to each other) aren’t clear until the film’s conclusion.

"Tell me about Jenny!" A new trailer has launched for the 4K restoration, 20th anniversary re-release of one of Steven Soderbergh's forgotten early films called The Limey. This "pulp revenge" tale is about a volatile, dangerous Englishman who goes to Los Angeles to find the man he considers responsible for his daughter's death. Not many are familiar with it, released in 1999 after premiering in Cannes. It was Soderbergh's 8th feature film that he directed right after Out of Sight, and right before Erin Brockovich, in the midst of his comeback years. Over the course of filmmaker Steven Soderbergh’s career, he’s had a number of films that have been big hits, as well as quite a few that seemingly flew under the radar and didn’t get the recognition they deserve. In that latter category sits the film “The Limey.” Thankfully, in honor of the film’s 20th anniversary, Soderbergh has gone back and given the film a proper 4K remaster.

And in honor of the trailer for the 4K remaster being released, he spoke to Deadline about the creation of “The Limey” and why it was one of the most terrifying experiences of his filmmaking career.

At 79 years old, inimitable Hollywood icon Peter Fonda passed away this week, leaving behind a legacy of iconic work. He is survived by his older sister, actress Jane Fonda, and his daughter, actress Bridget Fonda. In tribute to his career, here are five Fonda performances to seek out:

“The Wild Angels” (1966)

Cult hero Roger Corman’s 1966 biker outlaw film put Peter Fonda on the map as one of the faces of the New Hollywood, and forever memorialized the actor as a Harley-Davidson icon. The film that Leonard Maltin once called “Ok after 24 beers” stars Fonda as Heavenly Blues, the leader of a hard-partying San Pedro motorcycle gang, opposite Bruce Dern, Nancy Sinatra, and Diane Ladd. Fonda went on to co-star with Dern in Corman’s 1967 psychedelic film “The Trip.”

“Easy Rider” (1969)

Dennis Hopper’s wild road movie arrived in Hollywood like a brick through a windshield, shattering conventions and inspiring generations of filmmakers to come.

Los Angeles – Peter Fonda, part of Hollywood acting royalty, had many memorable roles in his long career. But he will forever be known as the “Easy Rider,” the 1969 feature that ushered in a new wave of filmmaking. Portraying a biker named Captain America, his character was “born to be wild” as he motored across the country. Peter Fonda died in Los Angeles due to complications of lung cancer. He was 79.

Peter Fonda, younger brother of two-time Oscar-winning actress Jane Fonda, son of actor Henry Fonda and father of actress Bridget Fonda, is dead at age 79 on Friday after losing his fight with lung cancer. He would introduce Hollywood to the counter-culture of the ’60s with his take on a biker film, 1969’s “Easy Rider.” The influential film made with pal, co-star, co-writer and director Dennis Hopper helped make Hollywood atuned to what was happening during the decade of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’roll while kick-starting the New Hollywood movement of the late ’60s and ’70s.

Fonda was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for “Easy Rider” along with Hopper and Terry Southern. Meanwhile, Jack Nicholson found his breakout role and was nominated for a supporting actor Oscar as an Aclu lawyer, who wears a football helmet as he decides to travel with Fonda and Hopper’s biker characters.

Peter Fonda, the two-time, Oscar-nominated star of “Easy Rider” and more recently films such as “Ulee’s Gold” and the remake of “3:10 to Yuma,” has died, his manager confirmed to TheWrap. He was 79.

In a statement to People magazine, his family said that Fonda passed away of respiratory failure on Friday morning due to complications from lung cancer. Fonda was part of a family of Hollywood royalty, the son of Old Hollywood star Henry Fonda and the brother to Jane Fonda, as well as the father of Bridget Fonda.

Soderbergh shot “Unsure” on an iPhone 7 Plus in 4K, using the app FiLMiC Pro, a far cry from one of his big-budget studio films such as “Ocean’s 11.” But that’s a dramatic example of just who Soderbergh is and why he matters.
