Remember what it was like to be a teenager, pent up with so much pulsing emotion it felt like it might come gushing forth from your guts at any given moment? Or, then, a twentysomething trying to embrace adulthood without losing your every scrap of raw nerve? “Dickinson” does, with the kind of visceral urgency that’s harder to portray than meets the eye.
The series, now in its second season on Apple TV Plus, casts Hailee Steinfeld as Emily Dickinson, the legendary poet who until recently was as well known for being a recluse as she was for being a writer. “Dickinson” acknowledges her reputation even as it dismantles it. The show’s Dickinson is Emily, a flesh and blood teenage girl brimming over with more feelings than she can process, first. Stevie Nicks has sold a majority of her publishing catalog to publisher and talent management company Primary Wave, the company announced Friday, with the Fleetwood Mac star becoming one of the highest-profile artists to capitalize on the booming song publishing acquisition market to date.
Primary Wave didn’t share financial details of the sale, but The Wall Street Journal reported that Nicks sold an 80% stake in the catalog, valuing the deal at about $100 million. The deal includes several of Nicks’s biggest hits as a solo artist and member of Fleetwood Mac including “Landslide,...

Stevie Nicks has revealed a lyric video for the piano version of “Show Them the Way,” dedicating it to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
The video features the song’s lyrics splashed across the screen in a variety of fonts, as Nicks seeks guidance from historical figures. “I don’t know if it was 1960 or 1963/Everything was timeless, even me,” she sings. “I wasn’t old, I wasn’t young, I was just part of their dream.”

Thirteen years ago, a teenage Miley Cyrus released “See You Again,” a snarling dance-rock single and her first without the Hannah Montana moniker that made her famous. And while it didn’t stray far from Disney Channel’s mass-produced pop, “See You Again” was still a mild surprise: it was cocky, clever, and a bit cooler than anyone really expected from the daughter of the “Achy Breaky Heart” guy. More notably, “See You Again” was Cyrus at her most self-assured and in her element — a feeling she hasn’t been...

Miley Cyrus has released her eagerly anticipated collaboration with Dua Lipa, “Prisoner.”
“Prisoner” perfectly splits the difference between Dua Lipa’s neo-disco pop and the late-Seventies/early-Eighties rock vibe that’s defined Cyrus’ Plastic Hearts era. The track arrives with a video, directed by Cyrus and Alana O’Herlihy, that boasts an equally retro feel, is packed with tour bus debauchery and ends with a cathartic live performance.

Miley Cyrus has answered fans’ prayers and released “Edge of Midnight (Midnight Sky Remix),” a mashup of her new single “Midnight Sky” and Stevie Nicks’ spiritual predecessor, “Edge of Seventeen.”
Unsurprisingly, Cyrus’ synth-pop banger blends perfectly with Nicks’ 1982 hit. The two singers trade off verses from both songs, and it’s difficult to tell exactly what was recorded in 2020 or nearly 40 years ago. If her recent marathon of covers weren’t enough, “Edge of Midnight” is further proof that Cyrus is in her element when calling back to classic rock legends.

“American Idol” alum Nikki McKibbin, who reached the final three on the show’s inaugural season in 2002, has died at the age of 42. Season one runner-up Justin Guarini broke the news on his Instagram on Oct. 31.
The Grand Prairie, Texas native famously finished third in the competition behind Guarini and winner Kelly Clarkson on the reality show’s storied first season on Fox. She had reached the finals after impressing judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson with performances of songs by Melissa Etheridge, Alanis Morissette, Bonnie Tyler, Janis Joplin and finally Alannah Myles with her rendition of “Black Velvet.”
According to a tweet by Redeye Radio host Gary McNamara, McKibbon suffered a brain aneurysm and was on life support until the late hours of Oct. 30.

After a string of acclaimed performances in Five Feet Apart, Support the Girls and Columbus, Haley Lu Richardson has solidified herself as one of Hollywood’s most talented up-and-coming actors. In her latest movie, Unpregnant, Richardson plays Veronica, a 17-year-old high school student whose world is turned upside down by a positive pregnancy test. Unpregnant was Richardson’s toughest challenge yet since she had to perform sensitive material involving teen pregnancy and reproductive rights within a road trip comedy. A recent survey found that one in five of Americans heavily rely on streaming services to help them cope with the trials and tribulations posed by the coronavirus pandemic. Netflix should be well aware of this fact, too, as their subscriber base has grown tremendously while other businesses – particularly those in the entertainment industry – are currently languishing.
Of course, periods of growth often precede times of rapid decline, and Netflix’s success has not been without its own complications. As more and more regions in the United States are reinstating quarantine, people consume content at faster rates than ever before. And in order to keep their subscribers satisfied, Netflix has tried their best to provide new material.
Today, for instance, August 27th, the streamer has added a total of 5 new movies and 1 new TV show, and the complete list is as follows:

The adults––worse, the other kids––of Karen Maine’s Yes, God, Yes all seem to be in on an elaborate inside joke. It can be tough to talk about sex, and it’s especially tough for Alice (Natalia Dyer), a sixteen-year-old stuck in Iowa catholic school. Rumors fly that she “tossed her classmates’ salad.” No one will tell Alice what that means.
Over the course of her 77-minute debut and an extracurricular Catholic retreat, Maine stages Alice being let-in on the secret. In the hands of the Obvious Child co-writer, Alice’s liberation from her repressive upbringing comes in the form of self-discovery––and in a distinctly awkward way, it’s pretty funny too. The coming-of-age genre has seen a real explosion in the last few years, but nothing quite like this. The Film Stage spoke with Maine about Yes, God, Yes, and her approach to sexuality on-screen.

The recent debut of HBO Max has only increased the competition in the streaming wars, and with both WarnerMedia and Disney having launched their own in-house platforms to try and compete with Netflix and Amazon Prime, they’ll have to make do with pre-existing content for the time being as they slowly but surely start to build up their library of original projects.
Obviously, the superhero genre is set to play a huge part in the potential success of both HBO Max and Disney Plus thanks to the hype surrounding the Snyder Cut of Justice League and the shows set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe respectively, but it’ll be a while before they can match the two market leaders when it comes to the sheer quantity of exclusives.

Since its November 1 launch, Apple’s new streaming platform Apple TV+ has provoked conversation around new shows “Dickinson,” “The Morning Show,” and “See.” Now, it’s gearing up to launch its original film slate, which began with documentary “The Elephant Queen” and will continue with “Hala.”
Apple bought rights to the film following its buzzy Sundance Film Festival premiere earlier this year, where it earned critical praise for its sensitive coming-of-age tale and strong lead performance. “Hala” is a semi-autobiographical offering from Minhal Baig, a writer on hit TV series “Bojack Horseman” and “Ramy.”
The official synopsis reads: “Seventeen-year-old Pakistani American teenager Hala (Geraldine Viswanathan) struggles to balance desire with her familial, cultural and religious obligations. As she comes into her own, she grapples with a secret that threatens to unravel her family.” “Hala” also stars Jack Kilmer as Hala’s love interest, and the film also boasts supporting turns from Gabriel Luna,...

Everyone knows Emily Dickinson; she’s one of the greatest poets in American history. Apple’s new comedy “Dickinson” wants to explode everything you thought you knew.
Born in 1830 in Amherst, Michigan, Emily Dickinson as a person is known primarily in broad strokes: Her literary genius, her prolific output, her life as a recluse, her extremely close relationship with her sister-in-law, which may or may not have been more than platonic.
But by and large, Dickinson exists far back enough in the fog of history that many aspects of her life remain open to imagination. Premiering on Apple TV+ on Friday, “Dickinson” aims to shade in those details and bring Dickinson alive for a modern-day audience — with a twist.

Watching “Dickinson” is a strange experience, and not just because it’s a deliberately strange retelling of poet Emily Dickinson’s life complete with bass-heavy needle drops and hallucinations of Death as a man with a Cheshire Cat smirk. For all the big creative swings the new Apple TV Plus series takes, it feels suspended between several different approaches without committing to a single one. It’s not a comedy, nor a drama, nor even quite a “dramedy.” It’s at least adjacent to a teen show in the vein of a high school series you might find on the CW, until it’s not. It’s not parody, nor entirely sincere. It’s possible to find a unique space amidst all the set categories within television, but at least in its first three episodes, “Dickinson” has trouble doing so outside its basic premise, which boils down to, “what if...

In the least surprising news of the year, the organizers behind Woodstock 50 gave into the inevitable on Wednesday and announced that the festival would not be taking place. “Unfortunately, we ran out of time,” Michael Lang told Rolling Stone shortly after the news broke. “[It] was an unfortunate venture, but I chalk it up to having the wrong partners early on. We did everything we could have done and we had the right motivations. We put together what I thought was an amazing lineup of talent. I thought we had all that right.

Seven new musical legends joined the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Brooklyn on March 29: The Cure, Def Leppard, Janet Jackson, Stevie Nicks, Radiohead, Roxy Music and The Zombies. That recorded 2019 ceremony is now airing on HBO tonight (April 27) and will continue to be available on the premium network’s on-demand listings for months to come.
Five of those artists performed at the event, but not Janet Jackson and Radiohead. She was reportedly upset over HBO airing “Leaving Neverland,” a hard-hitting documentary about her brother Michael Jackson, and backed out of singing that week (although she was there to accept the induction trophy). Several Radiohead members had indicated their apathy for the selection, so Ed O’Brien and Philip Selway were the only ones attending. Other recent inductees who refused to perform: Dire Straits (2018), N.W.A. (2016), Kiss (2014), Guns N’ Roses (2012), Genesis (2010), Abba (2010) and Madonna (2008).

While her last film “Five Feet Apart” didn’t do much to thrill us, there’s no denying that in the brief moments the film worked, it worked because of the performance Haley Lu Richardson turned in. Not new to the screen, Richardson first stole focus in the phenomenal coming of age flick “Edge of Seventeen” and managed to make an afterthought of a character be presented with agency in the surprisingly decent “Split.” However, it was with her role in “Columbus,” and then, a scene-stealing role in last year’s underseen “Support the Girls” that allowed her to fully come into her own and declare herself one of the most versatile new talents on the scene.

Trent Reznor was nearly done inducting the Cure into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when he went off on a slight tangent to talk about the institution itself. “I think it’s only right for me to admit that I’ve been, let’s say, ambivalent about the existence of certain award ceremonies,” the Nine Inch Nails frontman told the crowd at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center Friday night. “I remember distinctly saying to myself, among other things, how can I even take this awards ceremony seriously if they...

Stevie Nicks delivered a rousing speech at her Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, following a reverent introduction from protégé Harry Styles. Nicks is the first woman, the first member of Fleetwood Mac, and the 23rd artist in Hall of Fame history to be inducted twice: she was first inducted in 1998 with Fleetwood Mac, and again in 2019 for her work as a solo artist. Eliciting laughs and ample cheers from the crowd, Nicks dished on the making of her first solo record, 1981’s Bella Donna: “I [wanted] to make a Tom Petty album,...

Don’t expect a Janet Jackson performance at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony tonight. While the 52-year-old singer is in attendance to receive the honor, along with fellow honoree Stevie Nicks and members of Roxy Music, Duran Duran and Def Leppard, a source tells Variety she declined to participate in a customary musical number because the event will be filmed for later broadcast on HBO, the cable network that aired “Leaving Neverland.”
Although Jackson has not released her own statement about the film, members of the Jackson family have been vocal with objections to the two-part documentary that alleged sexual abuse committed by Michael Jackson, Janet’s older brother, against accusers Wade Robson and James Safechuck, who were children at the time.

Stevie Nicks kicked off the 2019 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony with her windblown classic, “Stand Back.” She paid tribute to its inspiration and co-writer Prince with purple lights bathing the audience. She twirled 11 times during the guitar solo with her (original!) gold and black shawl cascading around her. She followed with “Leather and Lace,” with Henley slowly walking to the front of the stage from the back. They locked eyes as they harmonized through the duet. After Henley exited, she introduced former One Direction star Harry Styles, who...

The First alum Keiko Agena has booked a series-regular role in Fox’s crime drama pilot Prodigal Son. Written by Feder and Sklaver and directed by Lee Toland Krieger, Prodigal Son is described as a fresh take on a crime franchise with a provocative and outrageous lead character and darkly comedic tone. It centers on Malcolm Bright (Finn Jones), who has a gift. He knows how killers think, how their minds work. Why? His father Martin Whitly (Michael Sheen) was one of the worst — a notorious serial killer called “The Surgeon.” Agena will play Edrisa, the slightly off-center coroner working with the NYPD detective team. She is thrilled by her work, and she is both smitten and fascinated with Bright. Agena is coming a series-regular role on The First, which aired for one season on Hulu, and can be seen recurring in Bravo’s Dirty John. She is repped by...

There’s the old joke about the fish that says “Hey, how’s the water today?” to a second fish, who replies: “What the hell is water?” This is how the movies have come to occupy the suburbs, as a non-space defined by how easy it is to forget it’s anyplace at all. Maybe it’s the infinite connectivity of the internet erasing the sensation of isolation, but films such as Eighth Grade, Edge of Seventeen and their ilk have developed a passive relationship to their provincial suburban setting, regarding it as dull but harmless. Even the films about stagnating adulthood – see: Game Night – draw their unease from within, rather than their surroundings.

Love, Simon isn't the first film to be made about Lgbtq teens. There's Beautiful Thing, But I'm a Cheerleader, Camp, Edge of Seventeen (not the Hailee Steinfeld one), Get Real... the list goes on and on. It certainly won't be the last film to be made about Lgbtq teens, either. But it is the first one produced and distributed in wide release by a major Hollywood studio. Because of that, yes, there is an air of polished mediocrity and safety to the whole enterprise. And yet, it's hard to deny the film's effectiveness.
I don't know if, when I was a teenager, I would have had the courage to buy a ticket to see Love, Simon by myself. I do know, however, that if I had, it would have made my teenage years that much better.

Minhal Baig’s semi-autobiographical “Hala” — a small but sensitively told coming-of-age drama about a teenage girl who’s struggling to reconcile the two sides of her hyphenated Pakistani-American identity — manages to establish its primary conflict in its opening two shots. The first is an image of an empty living room, as a disembodied voice sings a reverent Muslim prayer. The second peeks in on the film’s title character, as she slumps inside the bathtub of her family’s Illinois home and masturbates with the furtiveness of a first-time shoplifter.
The only child of immigrant parents, Hala is stuck between two worlds that seem impossible to reconcile: One holy and abstract, the other profane and tangible. Each is real for her in its own way, and neither can be sacrificed without surrendering a crucial part of the person she’s becoming. Her mom (Purbi Joshi) and dad (Azad Khan) are living proof of that.

Resident Evil is getting the small-screen treatment: Netflix is developing a TV series based on the action-horror video game and movie franchise, our sister site Deadline reports.
The project, which is in the early stages, would expand the universe and deepen the mythology while exploring the dark inner workings of the Umbrella Corporation and the new world order caused by the T-virus outbreak. The search for a showrunner is underway.
Resident Evil was previously adapted into a series of six movies starring Milla Jovovich.

A spinoff of the 2016 movie led by Hailee Steinfeld, “Edge of Seventeen” centers on a teenage girl and her best friend as they navigate the relationships, feelings and realities of being a teenager.
“The Hunger Games” alum Fuhrman will star as Mira, described as a whip-smart underachiever trying to survive high school until the moment she can escape her hometown and her loving, but messy, family. Socially, she’s a floater, along with her best friend Lou — a clique of two. But when things start to shift in their friendship, Mira will have to search her world for other connections to help her endure her seemingly endless adolescence.

It’s been over half a century since gun-slinging, hi-de-ho westerns dominated the box office, when names like John Wayne, Roy Rogers and Clint Eastwood rolled off the tongue. In 2018, tumbleweeds slowly crawling across a deserted street are few and far between. Don’t get it twisted, though, westerns are no where near extinct. Some of your favorite stars have been recently seen polishing their revolvers in hot pursuit of money, power and revenge, including in this weekend’s “Ballad of Buster Scuggs” and next month’s “The Sisters Brothers.”
