a boy whips a tied up horse repeatedly in one scene because he believes his father wanted him to do so. in a later scene the same boy tries to apologize to the horse, but this does not work and the boy is shown knocked down in the corner of the horse's stall. it is later implied that the horse broke the boy's arm.
at one point in the film a man prepares to shoot a horse, but this does not happen and he almost shoots another boy, but again this does not happen.

Conner's grandmother gets a job at a weaving factory and later has a heart attack.
Connor's grandmother gets sick later in the film and is shown dead the next morning. this might be frightening and upsetting to younger viewers.
the scene where a boy whips a tied up horse repeatedly could be very disturbing to some viewers as well as the scene where the horse rears and knocks the boy over.
