Skye P. Marshall isn’t religious, but she does believe in magic. You’d have to have some faith in a higher power after the few years she’s had. For the “Matlock” actress, 2020 and beyond has been a veritable hot streak of impeccable timing, great luck, and classic Hollywood fairytale. Few TV actors experience such good fortune, especially these days — but Marshall’s breakout role on CBS’s buzzy legal drama didn’t happen overnight.
“I didn’t have the courage to ask for what I wanted to do with the rest of my adult life until I was 27,” Marshall told IndieWire, looking back on the decade since she moved from New York to California. “Everyone thought I was crazy. They were like, ‘Do you have an agent?’ ‘No.’ ‘Any formal training?’ ‘Not really.’ ‘You have friends in LA though, right?’ ‘No, I do not.’ It was a cocktail...

Because the world is a cruel place to beautiful souls like Adam Sandler, Ariana Grande can’t get through The Waterboy without some waterworks.
On paper, the story of The Waterboy and Bobby Boucher is practically a tragedy — a young man grows up in a repressive religious household raised by a traumatized and manipulative single mother, and his only escape from this rural, swampy poverty is through channeling his deep-seated pain and rage into physical violence that’s exploited for entertainment purposes.
Honestly, a critical read of the Sandler classic could interpret The Waterboy as an indictment of America’s obsession with violence, our insufficient education system and the controlling nature of fundamentalist Christianity in rural communities.
Maybe that’s why the pop star Grande weeps when she sees Boucher victimized onscreen, as she revealed in a recent interview clip that demands a watch after Nikki Glaser made beautiful celebrities...

Wicked star Ariana Grande has become renowned for her tearful interviews, but she claims one Adam Sandler movie never fails to make her cry. A former Nickelodeon child star and pop sensation, Grande recently wowed audiences as the Good Witch of the South, Glinda, in 2024’s record-breaking adaptation of the Wicked stage musical. Throughout the movie’s promotional efforts, Grande and co-star Cynthia Erivo became renowned for their emotion-filled interviews, prompting a slew of memes and viral reaction videos.
The frequency with which both actors had been brought to tears while promoting Wicked was not lost on either star. During one such interview, Grande even headed off prospective critiques of her propensity for crying, claiming, “I’ll say it first. I’m annoyed, I’m tired. My tear ducts [are tired].” Nonetheless, both stars remained resolute that their reaction was the natural culmination of a three-year-long journey during which both had formed a strong behind-the-scenes bond.

For decades, Adam Sandler has been one of Hollywood's biggest stars, churning out hit comedy after hit comedy despite the less than stellar reputation a lot of them might have. His '90s run is one of his career high points with an impressive group of films that include Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, The Wedding Singer, The Waterboy, and Big Daddy. Most of these films work so well solely because of Sandler's work in them.
Looking at Adam Sandler's best films overall tells a much different story, though. Under all the over-the-top comedic antics, Sandler's ability to bring out incredible dramatic performances is what helps to set him apart for so long in his career. Even his upcoming run of films would make no sense for most actors, but that is what makes Adam Sandler so interesting as an actor.

The original is one of Adam Sandler's best comedies, and now Happy Gilmore 2 is in the works. Happy Gilmore was a key movie that, alongside Billy Madison, helped make Adam Sandler a comedy leading man. The 1996 hit featured Sandler as the title character, a failed ice hockey player who discovers an unlikely talent for golf. He uses this skill to win prize money that would help his grandmother get her house back, but first, he has to beat a jealous rival and learn to control his explosive anger.
Happy Gilmore made great use of Sandler's comic skills and featured a fantastic supporting cast, including Christopher McDonald as Gilmore's rival Shooter McGavin, Carl Weathers, and an uncredited Ben Stiller as evil retirement home orderly Hal. Ben Stiller is reprising his role from “Happy Gilmore” in the follow-up to Adam Sandler’s 1996 classic sports comedy, “Happy Gilmore 2.”
Netflix is backing the long-awaited sequel, which is currently filming in New Jersey. Along with Sandler and Stiller, the cast will include familiar faces such as Christopher McDonald as pro-golfer Shooter McGavin and Julie Bowen as Sandler’s character’s romantic interest Virginia Venit. New additions to the golf world of “Happy Gilmore 2” include comedian Nick Swardson, filmmaker Benny Safdie, musician Bad Bunny, actor Margaret Qualley and NFL star Travis Kelce.
Netflix didn’t respond to Variety’s request for comment about Stiller’s casting.
Kyle Newacheck is directing the sequel from a script by Sandler and his frequent collaborator Tim Herlihy.

An Adam Sandler horror-comedy franchise is dominating a global streaming chart. Sandler is a five-time Emmy nominee who first rose to prominence as a member of the cast of the long-running NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live. He has since become a major comedy star, with his movies Billy Madison (about a wealthy adult man who is forced to return to school) and Happy Gilmore (about a golfer with anger issues) helping his star rise further and providing the name for his production company Happy Madison, which was founded in 1999.
While there are quite a few Adam Sandler movies that have earned Rotten Tomatoes splats, he has become a major commercial success. At the time of writing, his movies have collectively earned more than $5.5 billion, with many original comedies grossing $100 million or more, including 50 First Dates, The Wedding Singer, The Water Boy, Big Daddy, Click, and Pixels. Apparently, Adam Sandler’s “The Chanukah Song” isn’t as ubiquitous as we thought.
Kathy Bates, who played Mama Boucher in The Waterboy, had never heard of the song — or Sandler — when she first received the script for the film. “Did you get The Waterboy right out of the gate?” Drew Barrymore asked Bates on her show this week.
“I actually read the first 12 pages and threw it in the trash right next to my bed,” Bates confessed. But the script didn’t stay in the garbage for long. Her niece Linda, who’s worked with Bates since 1994, rescued the screenplay soon after and asked why she threw it out. “Oh, it’s some football script, I don’t know what it is.”
Linda read the name on the front of the script. “Adam Sandler! You don’t know ‘The Chanukah Song’?”
Bates confessed she’d heard of neither, but Linda set her straight.

Netflix's Happy Gilmore 2 will include de-aged flashback scenes which open up doors for all types of possibilities in the upcoming comedy sequel. The highly anticipated sequel to Happy Gilmore will see the return of classic stars such as Adam Sandler, Christopher McDonald, and Julie Bowen. Happy Gilmore 2's cast will also feature Benny Safdie, Nick Swardson, Margaret Qualley, and cameo appearances by John Daly, Travis Kelce, and more. The Happy Gilmore sequel will be yet another one of Sandler's films made by Netflix and is poised to be one of his most popular straight-to-streaming movies yet.

After a remarkable 50-year career in Hollywood, Oscar-winning actress Kathy Bates has decided to retire, with the CBS reboot of Matlock serving as her final project.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, Bates, 76, expressed her plans to step away from acting, calling this moment her “last dance.”
Reflecting on her career, Bates shared that acting has, at times, consumed her life, leaving little room for personal space. “It becomes my life,” Bates explained. “Sometimes I get jealous of having this talent, because I can’t hold it back, and I just want my life.” She added that she often felt out of place in the industry, noting, “I never felt dressed right or well. Like many popular comedic actors of the day, Adam Sandler got his start on “Saturday Night Live” first as a writer and then as a cast member. He was spotted by weekend update anchor Dennis Miller doing stand-up comedy and Miller recommended him for the show. Sandler was a big success on the show, particularly doing song parodies during the Weekend Update segments. Sandler left the show in 1995 after only five years on the program. Years later when Conan O’Brien was having his own problems with NBC, Sandler admitted to O’Brien that he was actually fired from “SNL” and didn’t leave voluntarily as had been assumed.
Sandler started off doing comedy films after that but has evolved into doing dramatic work at times. While he has a pretty strong track record as a box office draw, he has also often been the target of poor reviews from critics...

Disney didn't exactly have a banner year (by Disney standards anyhow) in 2023. None of the studio's films topped $1 billion last year which, again, is not the marker for success. However, for a studio with as many reliable franchises as Disney has, it's notable, particularly when movies like "The Marvels" and "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" flopped so badly. In any event, the Mouse House is having a real bounce-back year in 2024, with "Inside Out 2" literally ranking as one of the biggest movies of all-time at this point. Yet, oddly enough, it's R-rated movies that are truly leading the way for the traditionally family-friendly company at the moment.
This past weekend, Disney held the number one and number two spots at the box office, with "Deadpool & Wolverine" reclaiming the top spot in its fifth weekend with $18.3 million. Meanwhile, last weekend's champion "Alien: Romulus" landed at number two with $16.2 million.

Inquiring minds like Joe Rogan’s want to know: How does Adam Sandler come up with the ideas for all of his movies? On this week’s Joe Rogan Experience podcast, he asked if Sandler started with a character? A premise? What was the silly secret behind all those blockbusters?
The Sandman didn’t have a definitive answer, but sometimes he just knew he had a winner on his hands. “Billy Madison, I remember I thought, ‘Oh, this could be great. A grown-up who does elementary school again. And that's a great idea — I get to be goofy, get to bully these little kids, then all of a sudden connect with these kids and have fun growing up again.”

There was only one problem in Sandler’s mind. “Part of my head was like, well, Rodney (Dangerfield) did Back to School already. So everyone’s gonna say, I just ripped off Back to School.

One of the all-time greats in the world of silent film comedy, Harold Lloyd, is perhaps best known for his monumental work Safety Last!, which, in addition to providing Boeing with a perfect slogan, gave us the iconic scene in which Lloyd perilously hangs from a clockface.
He also starred in classics like the college football comedy The Freshman, which no doubt served as the inspiration for Adam Sandler’s The Waterboy.
But before both of those projects, Lloyd was the victim of a freak accident that left him horribly injured, all due to a mishap that wouldn’t have seemed out of place in one of his silent comedies. In 1919, Lloyd inked a deal with Pathe distributors to star in a new series of films, and agreed to pose for a photographer in order to promote the arrangement. Adam Sandler's "Big Daddy" is now streaming on Netflix, a heartwarming comedy where he plays an unlikely father. Despite negative Rotten Tomatoes score, the film was a box office hit and paved the way for Sandler's later down-to-earth characters. Big Daddy's 39% critic score doesn't reflect audience sentiment, as it's a feel-good movie with heart and humor, showcasing Sandler's versatile acting talents.
One of the best Adam Sandler comedies ever made is now on Netflix despite its negative Rotten Tomatoes score. Sandler, who has gotten more into dramatic roles in recent years with his leading performances in films such as Uncut Gems (2019), Hustle (2022), and Spaceman (2024), is still celebrated for his timeless comedy classics such as Happy Gilmore (1996), The Waterboy (1998), and Billy Madison (1995). Sandler has several upcoming movies in both the dramatic and comedy genre including an untitled Noah Baumbach film, an untitled Safdie Brothers project, and a Happy Gilmore sequel.

There is a unique charm and allure to college football that you just don’t get from watching the NFL. Yes, people still bet on college football lines but there isn’t the same level of pressure or financial burden on college sports which just makes it that little bit purer and more wholesome.
As does the fact that the youngsters playing the game aren’t weighed down by years of expectations. Instead they’re eagerly chasing their dreams and enjoying every minute of playing a sport that they love.
It’s no wonder then, that the world of college football has spawned so many wholesome and engaging movies and TV series. Here are a few that we think are worthy of your time…

When it comes to wholesome and entertaining, there isn’t a movie or TV show on this list that holds up to Adam Sandler’s 1998 film.

Farmer Fran is a hilarious recurring character in Adam Sandler films, with his exaggerated Cajun accent and unintelligible advice. Blake Clark, a frequent Adam Sandler collaborator, has appeared in 13 of Sandler's movies, making him one of his most frequent collaborators. While Farmer Fran doesn't impact the plot, he adds humor and charm that makes viewers remember him long after the movie ends.
Farmer Fran is a hilarious side character in Adam Sandler's The Waterboy and viewers may recognize the actor from similar parts he's played. Adam Sandler is well known for casting his friends in his movies, and it's always fun to wait and see when Kevin James is going to appear or if Nick Swardson will have a cameo. Sandler's older films can be bittersweet for this same fact when the late Chris Farley or Norm Macdonald comes on the screen. This "acting-troupe" style of filmmaking makes Sandler's films...

Henry Winkler recalls incident in Carmel that led to tension with Tom Hanks during the preparation for Turner & Hooch filming. Sandler shines in dramatic roles like Uncut Gems, proving he's more than just a comedy legend. Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix continues Sandler's streak of diverse roles, mixing comedies and dramas. Sandler's future includes more collaborations with top directors, hinting at even more dramatic roles ahead.
The announcement of Happy Gilmore 2 is certainly exciting, but Sandler's recent streak of dramatic roles shows even more promise for the celebrated actor. Sandler has starred in some of the greatest comedies of all time, becoming a dominant force in the comedy world during the 1990s and 2000s with classic films such as Billy Madison, The Waterboy, The Wedding Singer, and of course, Happy Gilmore. Uncut Gems stars Adam Sandler as an eccentric jeweler battling with gambling addiction in New York City. Directed by the Safdie Brothers, the film offers a thrilling ride without relying on traditional action elements. The star-studded cast includes Idina Menzel, Kevin Garnett, and breakout talent Julia Fox in key roles.
The 2019 crime thriller Uncut Gems has a stellar cast led by a nearly unrecognizable Adam Sandler. Directed by Benny and Josh Safdie from a screenplay co-written by Ronald Bronstein, the critically acclaimed film follows an eccentric jeweler in New York City named Howard Ratner whose gambling addiction begins to mesh poorly with his family and his business until his growing adversaries and debts finally put all of them in danger. The film had been in various stages of production since 2016, with Jonah Hill set to star early on in the process before Sandler ultimately took the lead role.

Happy Gilmore remains an iconic Adam Sandler film with legendary cameos like Bob Barker and Richard Kiel providing memorable moments. The film showcases Sandler's roots in comedy with classic quotes and a unique approach to golf that set it apart as a sports comedy. His latest sequel venture, Murder Mystery 2, proves that Sandler's sequels are commercially successful despite low Rotten Tomatoes scores. Happy Gilmore 2 could be a huge hit considering Sandler's increased popularity and the enduring love for the original film. Even if Sandler's past films have received critical backlash, his ability to draw audiences guarantees viewership for potential sequels.
Happy Gilmore 2 has been teased, and the film coming to fruition would break a massive career trend for comedic actor Adam Sandler. Decades after its release in 1996, Happy Gilmore is still one of Adam Sandler's best movies and is considered one of the best sports comedies ever made despite mixed critical reception. In fact, many of Sandler's classic comedy films have been poorly reviewed by critics, but that hasn't prevented audiences from enjoying them time and time again. Several of his movies are commercial hits, which makes a certain aspect of them so surprising.

“Happy Gilmore 2” is apparently being developed by Adam Sandler, and a script even exists. Shooter McGavin actor Christopher McDonald revealed the news during a radio interview on “Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan.” McDonald said he had a recent run-in with Sandler, who unexpectedly pulled out the first draft for a sequel to their 1996 sports comedy classic.
“I saw Adam [Sandler] about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this,'” McDonald said. “I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that,’ and he shows me the first draft of ‘Happy Gilmore 2.’ Maybe you should cut that out [of this audio] because I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”
Variety has reached out to Sandler’s representative for comment.
Sandler starred in and co-wrote “Happy Gilmore,” which was directed by Dennis Dugan.

As the social and political turmoil of 1960s America spilled into the 1970s, network television executives and producers knew they could no longer ignore the thorny issues being argued over kitchen tables and at work/school. The Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, the Equal Rights Amendment, etc. were driving a wedge between families and neighbors. So when Norman Lear trotted out the unrepentant bigot Archie Bunker on "All in the Family" in 1971, many people in the country felt seen. And while they might not agree on the hot-button topics explored on this show, they could at least laugh through their many disagreements.
There came a point, however (somewhere between President Richard M. Nixon's resignation and the end of the Vietnam War), where television viewers grew weary of all these socially conscious sitcoms. Yes, they were still watching them in huge numbers, but they needed a break from the nonstop tumult of their lives.

The week of Thanksgiving is always a major one for moviegoers, and these days, that holds true for streaming too. Netflix typically offers up a new movie that becomes an instant hit among subscribers, and this year it was the animated Adam Sandler film "Leo." If you haven't seen the ads for "Leo," it's a musical coming-of-age comedy about an old lizard (Sandler) who becomes a mentor to fifth graders after they discover the class pet can talk. It's more likely that you have already seen this movie, though, as Netflix reports that 34.6 million people tuned in to watch it during the week of November 20th to 27, 2023.
Streamers' self-reported data is notoriously less-than-transparent, but an animated kids' movie doing huge numbers during a long weekend is a no-brainer. "Leo" also actually looks good; the smooth animation is closer to Dreamworks or Pixar style than typical Netflix fare, and Sandler reigns...

Streaming services are now trying to ration their upcoming original content due to the ongoing actors strike and the only recently-resolved writers’ strike, so we’re going to see a thinning-down of new releases across the board over the next six months at least. Hulu will be adding a lot of library TV shows and movies in November, but there are only a few new major original projects hitting the streamer this month.
Hulu’s spotlight streaming series in November is Black Cake, which is based on the bestselling book by Charmaine Wilkerson. Part family drama, part murder mystery, the show features a globetrotting story that will cover decades of events after a bereaved family find a flash drive that contains some shocking secrets about the hidden history of their late matriarch.
Also dropping on Hulu this month is the original film Quiz Lady, starring Sandra Oh, Awkwafina, Jason Schwartzman,...

For a movie that's mostly about how friendships are forever, the 2010 Adam Sandler comedy "Grown Ups" may have had fans wondering about a conspicuously missing face from the sequel. For much of Sandler's career on the big screen, he's been joined by longtime friend and collaborator Rob Schneider. Starting with 1998's "The Waterboy," the two actors have appeared in well over a dozen movies together, from the likes of "Mr. Deeds" and "The Longest Yard" to even an animated movie like "Eight Crazy Nights." Contrary to recent rumors, the bond still seems to be going strong as the two ended up joining forces again in 2017's "Sandy Wexler" and once more in "Hubie Halloween" three years ago. But that hasn't stopped fans from wondering why, after such a prominent role in "Grown Ups," Schneider didn't return for another go-around in "Grown Ups 2."
