Robert Lasardo’s American Trash marks both the directorial debut and a major change of pace for the prolific actor, whose first role was almost forty years ago in Abel Ferrara’s China Girl. Over the years he’s become known for roles in films like In Hell, Bridge of the Doomed and Amber Road, but he’s chosen to make a drama that trades physical brutality for an unflinchingly brutal look at pain, loss and the toll modern society can take on people.
Milles (Robert Lasardo) is a combat veteran who now works as a tattoo artist while trying to get a grip on his Ptsd issues. One of the few things that seems to bring him a sense of peace is listening...

The 90s was a great time for adaptations. Jurassic Park is the gold standard, of course, but there was so much more. That book’s author, Michael Crichton, also had Sphere and Congo get greenlit and released while we would see non-horror output like Forrest Gump and Shawshank Redemption, which account for the greatest film of all time… and Forrest Gump. On the horror side we would have Silence of the Lambs, the wonderful It TV miniseries, Exorcist III, and a fun little monster movie throwback called The Relic. At the time, I just thought it was a cool creature feature designed specifically for 12-year-olds like me but looking back all these years later I found out it was an adaptation of a book by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child in what would be the first of 22 separate stories for one of the chief protagonists. That’s all well and...

The horror films of the 1950s are often relegated to two categories: space invaders and giant bugs. There is some truth in that generalization, but the reality is far more subtle with deep ties to the past along with the political climate of the decade itself. Both these categories can trace their lineage, at least in American film, back to two quintessential classics of the genre—Dracula and Frankenstein, but removed from spooky castles and unspecified European locales and placed squarely in the suburbs and cities of Cold War era America. Like Dracula, the alien invasion film examines the fear of “the other.” The so-called giant bug movies are really “science gone awry” movies and Frankenstein has been the template and ultimate expression of that idea since its publication in 1818. By the 1950s, the great scientific fear was nuclear power, specifically in the form of the atomic bomb and the...

Special effects master and creature creator Stan Winston is best known for making the monsters seen in such hit films as "The Terminator," "Invaders from Mars," "Aliens," "Alien Nation," "Predator," "Jurassic Park," "Congo," and "The Relic." He also provided makeup and other eerie beings for "The Thing," "Starman," "Edward Scissorhands," "Batman Returns," and "The Island of Dr. Moreau." He received an Oscar nomination in 1982 for his work on the robot comedy "Heartbeeps." His monsters indelibly changed genre cinema for decades, and his death in 2008 was an immeasurable loss.
Winston also directed a few notable projects. He directed the music videos for Guns N' Roses and Michael Jackson. Winston also helmed the amusement parks-only 3-D "Terminator" interquel "T2 3-D: Battle Across Time" in '96. Winston only ever directed two feature films: the very, very, very odd cop-teams-up-with-a-gnome comedy "A Gnome Named Gnorm" in 1990, and the horrifying monster revenge thriller "Pumpkinhead" in 1988.

Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver are so in sync that they tend to finish each other’s sentences, a habit that has come in handy during decades spent together writing some of Hollywood’s biggest movies — all while maintaining a 35-year-long marriage.
The duo arrived on the scene with The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, the 1992 female-led thriller that Silver wrote in USC grad school and got made with the help of Jaffa, then an agent at William Morris, who put it in front of the right people and worked as an uncredited writer on the film. Their careers took off in earnest when they revamped a flagging but treasured 20th Century Fox franchise with Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the 2011 feature that took a risk by focusing on an ape protagonist (Andy Serkis’ Caesar) and redefined what was possible with motion capture technology.

A new breed of creature-features was unleashed in the 1990s and continued well into the next decade. Shaking off the ecological messaging of the past, these monsters existed for the sake of pure mayhem. Just to name a few: Tremors, The Relic, Anaconda, Godzilla, Deep Rising and Lake Placid all showcased this trend of irreverent creature chaos. Reptiles and other scaly beasts proved to be a popular source of inspiration for these films, but for that extra crawly experience, bugs were the best and quickest route. Spiders, in particular, led some of the worst infestations on screen in the early 2000s. And on the underbelly of this creeping new wave — specifically the direct-to-video sector — hangs an overlooked offering of spider horror: Arachnid.

Sam Mercer, who produced eight M. Night Shyamalan films starting with the spooky blockbuster The Sixth Sense, has died. He was 69.
Mercer died Feb. 12 at his home in South Pasadena after a battle with younger-onset Alzheimer’s, his wife, Tegan Jones, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Mercer was seen as an out-of-the-box hire when he joined Industrial Light & Magic in September 2015 to oversee and coordinate activities of the VFX giant’s studios in San Francisco, Vancouver, London and Singapore. However, he left the next year after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

The beginning of Exists echoes those many other horror films set in the deep woods. Hapless folks encounter an unusual threat, likely after trespassing or offending the locals. And as this well-used formula commands, the characters then die in gruesome fashion. Eduardo Sánchez’s 2014 film is, admittedly, derivative of most body-count horrors with rural backdrops, yet it contains at least one novelty to set it apart: a Bigfoot. Hardly five minutes into this film and the young cast hits something on the road. As they assess the damage to their car and figure out what they struck, the characters get the sinking feeling that they are being watched from the nearby woods. Someone finally states the obvious: “That wasn’t no deer, bro.”
On average, found-footage horror films delay their strangeness in an effort to establish a semblance of normalcy. Make everything hypernormal and deliberately tedious so that the bizarre bits are more persuasive.

The end of the 1990s was an odd time for cinema and in general. We were in the midst of Y2K, a panic over clocks and computers needing to roll over from 99 to 00, something people feared more than monsters and cults, something people really feared and fearmongered about. It was expected to be something of an apocalypse by some. So of course, Hollywood ran with it. Technology gone wrong, end of days, Satan coming to Earth, etc. We got films like Strange Days, Stigmata, eXistenZ, Virus, The Matrix, and End of Days (watch it Here), our movie today.
Following a dry patch of work for Arnold Schwarzenegger following Batman & Robin and heart surgery, he didn’t get all that many offers and eventually, it seemed like he would not be coming back. Then, End of Days came his way, and it seemed like a good, if darker than his then-recent work,...

Say what you want about celebrity worship, but actors loom large in the popular imagination. Millions of people around the world suspend their disbelief to follow a story and invest in its characters, and some of this investment may go toward the actors themselves. Many of us like, respect, or find some common ground with specific performers. Our connections with them vary — background, talent, personality — but a consistent one is generation. So it is lamentable when we hear of an actor aging or even dying. Why? Because it means another part of our culture and zeitgeist is fading away.
We're just over halfway through 2023, and while we haven't seen a repeat of 2016 with its flurry of celebrity deaths, numerous actors from the screen and stage are passing on. Here are the actors who have died in 2023, so far.

Every year at Emmy nomination time, the grumble is heard: ‘Dude, where’s my show?’ It can feel like a kick in the teeth if you’ve been watching something truly great and its name isn’t called.
Here’s the bottom line: if a show didn’t air the required number of episodes before the May 31 deadline, it’s out. That means if it’s a series there needs to be a minimum of six episodes available for public viewing on a national platform (not just voter screeners) by that date. For documentary series or hosted nonfiction series, it’s three episodes. For limited/ anthology series, all episodes must have aired by deadline.
So for example, Apple TV+ drama series Silo missed the deadline by a mere squeak. Its sixth—and qualifying—episode, “The Relic”, aired on June 2.

With its list of new releases for June 2023, Prime is bringing a handful of Amazon Originals and many recent movie hits to the fold.
It’s actually quite a busy month for non-American programming in Amazon Originals department. Shows and movies like Deadloch, My Fault, and Medellín all originate from outside the U.S. and U.K. For the American and British crowd, however, the streamer is debuting two big tentpoles.
The first is I’m a Virgo on June 23. Acclaimed director Boots Riley’s TV followup to Sorry to Bother You will tale the surreal and satirical tale of a giant in Oakland. That will be followed by the more conventional (assumedly) fourth season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on June 30.

Everyone knows about the fabled and miraculous box office run of James Cameron’s “Titanic.” The film rode a wave of rave reviews, following months of bad press related to cost overruns, release date delays and behind-the-scenes melodrama, to a record-setting 600 million domestic and 1.8 billion worldwide total. Opening with just 28 million, it spent its first 15 weekends atop the domestic box office, still a record for consecutive Fri-Sun frames.
What of the films that perished in the first months of 1998? For three straight months, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet’s Oscar-winning romance/disaster feature sunk most of the competition. This was 1998, when big movies were not expected to open before the May-to-August summer movie season. The film that dethroned “Titanic,” an expensive, grimdark adaptation of “Lost in Space,” was itself a surprisingly “big” movie for its early April opening weekend.

While the teen slasher is primarily an American invention, that small fact has never stopped other cultures from trying the popular horror subgenre on for size. And like the rest of the world at the time, Germany saw an obvious opportunity after Scream renewed interest in the hottest horror trend of yesteryear. Hiding among the soupçon of comely Deutsche slashers released around the turn of the century is Flashback: Mörderische Ferien (Murderous Vacation). This import won’t evoke nostalgia outside its motherland, but fans of this first revival era of slashers will undoubtedly find a lot to like about it.
Like other slashers, Michael Karen’s movie begins in the past. A killer finds his way to an unsuspecting family’s vacation home after disposing of two random airheads on a train. The young daughter, Jeanette Feelman (Nicola Etzelstorfer), then witnesses the murder of her parents before barely escaping with her own life.

Like most hardcore horror fans, Guillermo del Toro loves a good anthology series. From "The Twilight Zone" to "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," which del Toro produced, the notion of getting a completely different tale of terror each week is too tantalizing to resist. So genre fans should be giddily anticipating the October 25, 2022, Netflix premiere of "Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities," which boasts eight episodes of spine-tingling fright from some of the most talented horror directors working today.
In the newly released teaser, del Toro promises, "Each of the episodes has a whole world." Though he is presenting the series, he has given all eight directors free rein to tell their stories on their own creative terms. Perhaps the most exciting element of the series is its focus on the construction of "beautiful, practical creatures." In an industry where CG dominates, it's an absolute joy to hear...

Almost every horror fan enjoys a good creature feature, but sometimes it can be hard to find one that plays it mostly straight without descending into complete self-parody. Peter Hyams’ The Relic is just that kind of monster movie, presenting an air of sophistication that distracts you from its roots in outright schlock.
It was one of the few times that Hyams—who has many thriller, sci-fi, and action films in his credits—jumped into the horror pool. Previously, he ventured into supernatural territory with the 1992 fantasy comedy Stay Tuned, which saw John Ritter and Pam Dawber running through a satellite dish system powered by Hell. It wasn’t exactly what many would call horror, but still, check it out if you haven’t—there’s some good dark comedy jokes that would make readers of this site cackle.

April is about to be a good month for returning HBO and HBO Max properties.
HBO Max’s list of releases for April 2022 features three hotly anticipated seasons of television. The Flight Attendant, which helped launch HBO Max as a viable spot for good dramedy in 2020, premieres its second season on April 21. That will be followed by another go-around for the sci-fi comedy Made for Love on April 28. Of course, the big ticket item this month is something that HBO Max inherited from its cable cousin. Barry season 3 will continue the story of hitman-turned-actor Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) on April 24.
The TV offerings run much deeper than just returning shows this month. April 7 sees the arrival of Tokyo Vice, a sprawling crime drama with some episodes directed by Michael Mann. The series stars Ansel Elgort as an American journalist embedding himself in Tokyo’s criminal underground in the late ’90s.

About 85 percent of the 128 feature films and television programs that showed at Park City last year made their way to the broader public of North America, or will this year.
Revenue — the kind that’s visible to the naked eye — is another matter. All Sundance 2019 films that received a theatrical release totaled $125 million in domestic gross. Although pandemic delays mean multiple titles have yet to be released, the total box office for Sundance 2020 is a little over $18 million. That drop mirrors the overall box-office decline.
This is where we’d like to compare and contrast box-office figures, and make predictions about the current Sundance market, but the revenue or value generated by VOD, Premium VOD, or streaming — platforms where they (presumably) made the most money — are unknown.

A new year means a new start. But in its list of new year releases for January 2021, Hulu is sending a message of…eh, we’ll get the year started in February. Not to be overly rude to the usually sturdy streaming service, but there’s not much going on for Hulu in 2021’s first month.
Perhaps the biggest release of note is something that already enjoyed a successful release for ITV in the U.K. The Sister is the lates thriller from Neil Cross (Luther) and it makes its U.S. debut on Hulu on Jan. 22. 2020 comedies Save Yourselves and Like a Boss both arrive on Jan. 1. Hulu original film The Ultimate Playlist of Noise premieres on Jan. 15 and TV series Everyone is Doing Great arrives on Jan. 13.
Thankfully Hulu’s library titles are a bit livelier this month. Jan. 1 sees the arrival of Blade Runner: The Final Cut,...

Hulu is kicking off the new year in style next month, with January set to deliver a ton of fresh titles to the Disney-owned streaming service. There’s a bunch of original content landing throughout the first few weeks of 2021, but probably the highlight is the incredible number of classic movies that are going up on the site on New Year’s Day. Whether you’re in the mood for iconic comedies, dramas, animated efforts or sci-fi flicks, there’s something for you on the way.
There are well over 100 films being added to Hulu’s library on January 1st, so let’s just pick out a few notable titles. The full Austin Powers trilogy is among them, and if you can’t get enough of Mike Myers, the first Shrek likewise becomes available. For dramas, there’s Robert Downey Jr. biopic Chaplin, Johnny Depp vehicle Donnie Brasco and Jim Carrey’s The Truman Show.
