The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent cast and character guide. Directed by Tom Gormican from a screenplay by him and Kevin Etten, the film breaks the fourth wall by having Nicolas Cage portraying a fictional version of himself — Nick Cage, an actor who can no longer land a major studio role and is in a lot of debt despite having starred in blockbusters like National Treasure. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is a rare movie wherein an actor playing a version of themselves works on many levels.
The plot combines various genres and leans quite a bit into the buddy comedy aspect. It’s unclear where Gormican and Etten may have gotten the idea for the movie, but Cage certainly has no issue spoofing parts of his career and making meta jokes about the films he’s made and the movie industry at large. As the actor's resurgence continues, a recent Nicolas Cage hit is finding a new streaming home. Even before landing his Oscar win for Leaving Las Vegas, the actor had made a name for himself in the '80s with leading roles in everything from the teen romantic comedy Valley Girl to the Coen brothers' Raising Arizona. He would solidify himself as a household name with his work in the action genre throughout the '90s and 2000s, including Michael Bay's The Rock, John Woo's Face/Off and the National Treasure franchise.
For the majority of the 2010s, Cage infamously became better known for his work in critically panned direct-to-video movies, which he has since explained stemmed from encountering financial problems and taking on as many projects as possible to make up for it. He would begin to enjoy a career resurgence with the 2018 psychedelic horror movie Mandy and the crime drama Pig,...

A24 and Nicolas Cage proved to be a match made in heaven with their 2023 surreal comedy Dream Scenario. A24 is the auteur-driven studio best known for thought-provoking films like Everything Everywhere All At Once and Midsommar, and the actor with an eclectic resume ranging from Oscar-winning fare like Leaving Las Vegas and Adaptation to action classics like Con Air and Face-Off, were the perfect collaborators for writer/director Kristoffer Borgli's brilliant satire of celebrity culture.
Dream Scenario follows Paul Matthews, an unassuming professor living a mundane life with his wife and two daughters. Paul is a passive man, not particularly respected by his students, peers, or family, and he dreams of making a bigger impact. He unexpectedly gets his wish when random people worldwide begin having dreams about him. Initially, he basks in the attention and newfound fame this brings him, but they also come with unexpected, drastic consequences.

Sean Penn may not be the first actor who comes to mind when thinking over the history of funny movie performances. Indeed, Penn’s reputation is as the most serious of thespians, and his is a well-earned one, built upon award-caliber work in heavy-hitting dramas like Dead Man Walking, Mystic River and Milk. But in fact, Penn’s long and impressive filmography is peppered with roles that have seen him shifting gears from drama to comedy, sometimes with memorable results.
Penn’s co-starring turn with then-wife Madonna in Shanghai Surprise may have been an early disaster, but the star kept on scratching his comedy itch nonetheless, starring alongside Robert De Niro in the remake We’re No Angels. Letting his funny side out finally paid off for Penn in terms of awards love, when his performance as a self-absorbed jazz guitarist in Woody Allen’s Sweet and Lowdown garnered an Oscar nomination.

A Nicolas Cage movie with a 62% Rotten Tomatoes score receives a glowing review from a mafia expert. Cage began his career in the 1980s by appearing in films such as Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Rumble Fish, and Moonstruck. Cage won the Academy Award for Best Actor in recognition of his starring role in 1995's Leaving Las Vegas, which is widely considered Nicolas Cage's best 1990s' movie. The 1990s also saw Cage starring in several action movies, including The Rock, Con Air, and Face/Off.
The quality and reception of his movies varied significantly through the 2000s and 2010s, ranging from the popular National Treasure films to the critically panned Ghost Rider movies. Since making his acting debut in 1982's "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," Nicolas Cage has gone on to amass an astounding filmography that has never stopped evolving. He's admittedly made some baffling choices as an actor, starring in the infamously terrible "Deadfall" (which has a zero rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and the 2019 dud "Grand Isle," whose flaws have more to do with its storytelling than Cage's performance as a haunted war veteran. Really, we would be here all day if I were to list the scores of middling-to-awful straight-to-video flicks Cage has starred in, yet the actor never, ever phones it in and shows up to every role with an intensity that is tough to match.
Being one of those actors who shines brighter than ever when given layered, intriguing roles to work with, Cage has delivered several unforgettable performances worth rooting for. For starters, we have the lesser-known...

Quentin Tarantino picks his favorite Nicolas Cage movie of the last five years, and it's the perfect choice. Tarantino is one of the most influential and accomplished auteurs of his generation, having written and directed nine feature films, winning two Academy Awards, with a tenth and final film on the way. In addition to being an accomplished auteur, Tarantino is also a serious cinephile who frequently shares his unfiltered opinions on film, recently praising the critically-panned Joker: Folie Deux and revealing that he refuses to watch Denis Villeneuve's Dune movies.
Now, on his Video Archives Podcast (via JoBlo), Tarantino revealed one of his favorite Nicolas Cage movies of the last few years Pig. The director says it's one of the actor's best movies of the last five years, and went on to suggest it's also one of the best movies he's seen in the last five years. Read his...

It has been quite some time since we’ve seen one of Nicolas Cage’s movies earn an Oscar nod, but he’s certainly no stranger to winning the prestigious award. Despite being one of the older veterans in the movie game today, Cage has also been more active than some actors who regularly receive nominations for some of the biggest awards in the industry.

It’s the world’s oldest profession, but it’s also the world’s most stigmatized profession. Sex work, be it prostitution or erotic dancing or pornographic acting, is a reality of the world, an umbrella of occupations that have never gone away or been snuffed out no matter what laws or restrictions society has tried to impose against it. Far from it: as the world has lurched forward into the online era, sex work has fully gone online, with subscription platforms and websites allowing for new ways for those in the field to make their bucks.
While people who do sex work come in all shapes and sizes, on film, sex workers tend to be painted with a reductive, dehumanizing lens. Often, they’re not really characters at all, but window-dressing in crime movies or — most appallingly — dead bodies in films about killers that don’t particularly provide them with much backstory.

Nicolas Cage’s net worth should’ve come to par with some of the A-listers in Hollywood. At one point in his career, Cage was one of the highest-paid actors in the industry, earning $20 million each for Gone in Sixty Seconds, Windtalkers, and National Treasure. However, his net worth came crashing down when his spending habits got out of his hands.

In Michael Samoski's 2021 drama "Pig," Nicolas Cage plays a quiet, bearded recluse named Rob Feld who lives in a remote woodland cabin with his unnamed pet pig. The pig is a skilled truffle forager, and Rob makes a living selling truffles to a restaurant supplier (Alex Wolff) who occasionally drives out to his cabin. Rob clearly has a dark past, but has seemingly found peace in the woods. One night, however, Rob is attacked, and his pig is stolen. Rob has to trek into nearby Portland to retrieve his animal friend, and, we learn, confront his past.
As the film progresses, we discover that Rob had unusual connections in the world of Portland's high-end restaurateurs, and that he participated in eatery-related underground fighting rings (!). He's also still in mourning over the death of his wife years before, which was the primary impetus driving Rob to become a recluse. More than anything,...

Nicolas Cage is one of Hollywood's most recognizable faces, but he doesn't exactly have the net worth to match. With a career spanning over four decades, the actor's versatility is unmatched, and Cage's massive filmography has seen him star in everything from action-packed blockbusters like National Treasure and Face/Off to critically acclaimed dramas such as Leaving Las Vegas, for which he won an Academy Award. The 1990s were a fantastic time for Nicolas Cage and a decade that featured some of his greatest film roles. A few examples of critics singling out Cage include:

Nicolas Cage comes from one of film’s most esteemed families. His uncle is Francis Ford Coppola (“The Godfather”) and his aunt is actress Talia Shire. Not wanting to appear like his career was the productive of nepotism, when he started acting he took the name Cage from one of his favorite comic book characters, Marvel’s Luke Cage.
Cage’s film career started off quite auspiciously with a small role in the popular comedy “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” when he was just 18 years old. He followed that up with a lead role in the cult classic “Valley Girl.” Both films interestingly dealt with the life of teenagers in the Los Angeles suburbs of the San Fernando Valley.
For his third film Cage would finally agree to work with his uncle when he appeared in Coppola’s “Rumble Fish,” followed the following year by Coppola’s “The Cotton Club.

Spider-Noir, a TV show by Prime Video, features Nicolas Cage as the aged detective in 1930s New York who used to be Spider-Man. Lamorne Morris joins as Robbie Robertson in the noir-style series, a journalist who will take on risky stories to further his standing. Alongside Cage and Morris, Brendan Gleeson, Li Jun Li, and Abraham Popoola round out the promising cast of the upcoming show.
Spider-Noir is an upcoming TV show by Prime Video and has a solid cast to bring it to life. After the success of Sonys Spider-Verse franchise, the character of Spider-Man Noir is one whom creatives were keen to continue exploring. The character appeared as a supporting member of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verses cast of characters, before being mostly absent for its sequel. That said, his cameo in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verses ending teased more to come from the detective-inspired variant of the Web-Slinger.

Amazon MGM Studios has entered into a multi-year film partnership with Scott Stuber, the former head of film at Netflix. As part of the pact, the streamer and studio will finance and release movies from Stuber’s new production company under United Artists, a languishing label that once operated under the auspice of MGM. In its heyday, United Artists released movies like “The Pink Panther,” “Rocky” “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” “Network” and the James Bond films. The agreement calls for Stuber and his soon-to-be launched company to produce several films annually. They will be released both theatrically and via Prime Video, Amazon’s streaming service.
Stuber’s new company will be based on Amazon MGM Studios’ Culver City lot. The pact is a first-look one, giving Amazon MGM Studios the initial crack at the projects Stuber develops. In addition, Stuber will be involved in all projects released by the new UA.

Editor’s note: this list was originally published in July 2021. It has since been updated to coincide with the release of “Longlegs.”
It’s amusing, in hindsight, to look back at Nicolas Cage’s first lead role. After a small role in “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” the scion of the Coppola dynasty headlined 1983’s “Valley Girl,” playing the teen heartthrob that swoops Deborah Foreman’s LA blonde off her feet. Sure, Cage was playing a punk instead of a football player, but it was altogether a rather conventional stock character, the kind that populates many teen films that came before (“Grease”) and after (“The Breakfast Club”).
As soon as he moved on from teen rom-com parts (see also: “Peggy Sue Got Married”), Cage largely has taken roles that have been anything but ordinary. The intense star specializes in playing men on the edge of madness, who feel deeply and express those emotions loudly.

With a filmography that boasts over 100 films and an Oscar win for his heart-wrenching performance in Mike Figgis’ Leaving Las Vegas back in 1995, Nicolas Cage continues to defy the odds and evade any singular Hollywood label. His chameleon-like adaptability has seen him delve into dramas, thrillers, horrors, & fantasy films with a vigor that is uniquely Cage.
Now, as the Ghost Rider actor starts a new adventure in the TV industry, Cage is ready to swing into action with the highly anticipated MGM+ ad Amazon Prime Video’s live-action Spider-Man Noir series—an 8-episode exploration into a tantalizing Pop-art infused world, as he recently disclosed in a chat with The New Yorker.

If you’ve never seen a Nicolas Cage film — and, let’s face it, there are a lot of them to choose from — which should you see?
Cage was asked this question during a sit-down with The New Yorker. The actor has appeared in nearly 120 films since his breakout starring role in 1983’s Valley Girl and will be next seen in a rare supporting role in the horror movie Longlegs. Along the way, he won an Oscar for Leaving Las Vegas and racked up several fan-favorite performances in films such as 1987’s Moonstruck, 1988’s Vampire’s Kiss, 1995’s Face/Off and 2002’s Adaptation.
Yet, Cage didn’t pick any of those.
Instead, he chose Michael Sarnoski’s 2021 drama Pig, in which Cage plays a despondent loner and former acclaimed chef on the hunt for thieves who stole his beloved truffle pig. The film earned some of Cage’s best reviews in his career,...

Nicolas Cage is well-known for his acting abilities and diverse roles over the course of his decades-long Hollywood career. This passion for art appeared to have worked wonders for him, as he went on to win an Academy Award for his breakout role in the movie Leaving Las Vegas.
However, the quality of his films began to deteriorate after a number of his ventures failed at the box office. The 2010s were also not kind to the actor, as he was nearly forced to play minor supporting roles in films such as Kick-Ass and Snowden, to mention a few, as well as several small-scale movies.

Even the best filmmakers in history take big, ambitious swings and completely miss the mark at times. In the case of Brian De Palma – the supremely talented New Hollywood director behind such all-time great classics as Carrie, Dressed to Kill, Blow Out, Scarface, The Untouchables, Carlito’s Way, and more – many consider his most glaring cinematic blemish to be tone deaf adaptation of The Bonfire of the Vanities in 1990. However, if general moviegoers and De Palma fans knew about the crushing production woes relating to the ending of his uneven 1998 crime thriller Snake Eyes, perhaps they’d reassess their opinion.
Indeed, the original ending of Snake Eyes is so drastically different than what transpires at the end of the theatrical cut that it’s nearly impossible to judge the movie’s intentional merits versus the final product. Of course, the grand irony about the brutally botched ending of Snake Eyes is...

Figgis told me Monday that it’s been edited but there’s allowance for the fact that the film played in competition here at the Cannes Film Festival. He recorded an interview with the cinema titan the other day.
Figgis, who was introduced into the Coppola clan back in the mid 1990s after directing Nicolas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas, told me that the documentary is “very much a fly-on-the-wall” and also features conversations with various cast members — Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, Dustin Hoffman, Shia Labeouf — and Coppola’s wife Eleanor Coppola, who shot the footage and directed her own study of her husband’s work for the acclaimed Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse, about the making of 1979s Apocalypse Now.

Irish director Lorcan Finnegan – already behind “Vivarium” – returns to Cannes with “The Surfer.” Starring Nicolas Cage, it follows a man who just wants to surf on a beach next to his old childhood home in Australia. But he is not a local anymore and he will have to fight for it – or lose his mind.
Nic’s character actually references “surfing as a metaphor for life.” Why did you want to explore – and maybe also mock – this philosophy?
I met Thomas Martin, who wrote the film, years ago. Despite launching his career to fresh heights, neither Nicolas Cage or writer/director Mike Figgis were apparently paid for Leaving Las Vegas.
1995’s Leaving Las Vegas was the film that launched Nicolas Cage’s career into another sphere of fame and opportunity. Playing an alcoholic Hollywood screenwriter opposite Elisabeth Shue earned Cage a Best Actor Oscar, opening up all kinds of new career avenues, not least his incredible run as an action star in the blockbuster triumvirate of Con Air, Face/Off and The Rock.
However, despite being the launchpad for an incredibly successful second act in his career in which Nicolas Cage would shoot to global stardom, the actor has revealed that he was probably never paid for the film. Mike Figgis, the movie’s writer and director had already claimed this on The Hollywood Reporter's It Happened In Hollywood podcast while also adding that he himself had never been paid either.

People say what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but Nicolas Cage could be spilling beans about his time in Sin City. In 2022, Cage said he likely never got paid for his role as the suicidal alcoholic screenwriter Ben Sanderson in the Mike Figgis-directed drama Leaving Las Vegas. The film was an Academy Awards powerhouse in 1996, earning top prizes for Best Actor (Nicolas Cage), Best Actress (Elizabeth Shue), Best Director (Mike Figgis), and Best Adapted Screenplay. The thought of Cage not getting paid for such a monumental role seems ridiculous, but it could be true.
While walking the red carpet at the SXSW Film & TV Festival on Monday, promoting his new film Arcadian, Cage spoke with Business Insider about his earnings confusion. While many of us would be livid about not getting paid for such a significant role, Cage says he remains unbothered by the circumstances.

Although comedy rarely receives the critical acclaim it deserves, especially compared to dramatic endeavors, Lewis transcended this and made his mark as an influential part of comedy history in film and TV shows. His dark and sartorial style was revolutionary when he began his career and inspired many comedians who came after him.

Richard Lewis, the wild, eccentric, ultra-neurotic stand-up comedian and comic actor who most recently served as a semi-regular alongside Larry David on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” is dead. He was 76. Lewis suffered a fatal heart attack Tuesday night less than a year after announcing in April 2023 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and was retiring from performing stand-up comedy. Lewis’ death was confirmed by his publicist Jeff Abraham, who noted, “His wife, Joyce Lapinsky, thanks everyone for the love, friendship and support and asks everyone for privacy at this time.”
He appeared this month on the 12th and final season of “Curb” after begging off of the show in its 11th season while recovering from a series of surgeries. But he wound up shooting a scene in an episode that year, anyway.

Richard Lewis, one of the most influential stand-up comedians of his era and Larry David's hilariously neurotic best friend on HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm," has died at the age of 76. The official cause of death was listed as a heart attack.
Lewis belonged to a class of comedians who turned joke-telling into a confessional art form. His contemporaries were Richard Belzer, Elayne Boosler, Robert Klein, and Jerry Seinfeld. Lewis got belly laughs out of failed relationships, depression, anxiety, and addiction. He was reliably, identifiably miserable, which was a balm for anyone in his audience who happened to be struggling because, no matter how awful his life seemed to be, he was always back on stage the next night or bantering with David Letterman a week month later after recounting his latest crisis.
He was a neurotic's neurotic, and, therefore, an essential part of our lives. If he could laugh off life's absurd tortures,...
