Warning: This article contains Major Spoilers for Xo, Kitty season 2!
The rift in Kitty Song-Covey’s extended family is central to Xo, Kitty season 2, raising questions about how it started and how Kitty mends old wounds. As a spinoff of the To All The Boys movies, Xo, Kitty was always going to have a rom-com tone, focusing on the titular main character’s relationships. Even though Kitty says she’s trying to learn about her mom, she spends most of the first season worrying about romance.
Kitty even acknowledges that she didn’t learn much about Eve Song when returning to Kiss at the start of Xo, Kitty season 2. Though the show doesn’t abandon its roots, the second season pays more attention to Kitty’s mom and her Korean lineage. Xo, Kitty’s Korea setting is used much better this season. After learning about a secret family and a two-generation-old rift,...

As Twisters blows into cinemas worldwide, this week’s film quiz includes some questions about weather on film…
In summer 2024, UK weather has been as unpredictable as ever, which is a fine hook for a Twisters-adjacent quiz about movie weather. As well as seeing if you know your Little Miss Sunshine from your Rain Man, this week’s batch of 30 questions covers subjects such as movie-star parents, awards-worthy performances, and film-to-tv spin-offs. Thinking cap and quizzing trousers are a must, but dress for all weather as usual!
Once you’ve completed all three rounds, you’ll find a link to a separate post with the correct answers at the bottom of this post. As always, this is all just for fun, but please let us know how you did in the comments (scores out of 30 this week!) and give us any other lovely feedback. Come rain or shine, we...

There are many things in this weird and wonderful world that go together perfectly; mac and cheese, bacon and eggs, beer and curry, Pegg and Frost, Han Solo and Chewbacca, Affleck and Lopez. Ok, there are some things that go well together. However, there are two popular worlds that are a huge part of this particular writer’s life, that get on together like a house on fire; rock music and horror movies. Both genres embody everything that’s good about their respective industries and over time there have been many collaborations between the two worlds. Various rockers have lent either their musical, or acting, talents to the movie world and horror in particular, including the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Henry Rollins and David Bowie. What we’re going to focus on primarily is a collaboration between one of the most prominent British rock stars of all time, Lemmy Kilmister,...

Monarch: Legacy of the Monsters will revisit the Godzilla-Muto fight from the 2014 movie, filling in the gaps and showing the conflict from different perspectives. The series will be able to show previously unseen parts of the fight, including the initial clash between Godzilla and the MUTOs and their eventual separation. The decision to focus on this moment in the MonsterVerse's history allows for a deeper exploration of the aftermath of the discovery that monsters exist, highlighting the impact on people outside of Godzilla's movies.
Thanks to Monarch: Legacy of the Monsters, the MonsterVerse is on track to show the rest of the Godzilla-Muto fight from the 2014 movie. During the second half of the Gareth Edwards-directed film that launched the MonsterVerse, Godzilla engaged in some grueling battles with the two MUTOs in San Francisco before finally emerging triumphant. However, only a portion of this conflict actually occurred onscreen.

Surprise! Legendary director Barbet Schroeder, in Locarno to introduce his latest doc “Ricardo and Painting,” was greeted with a Special Tribute Award before the screening.
“Is this for the film?” Shroeder, a modest man, asked on stage. “No,” said Locarno festival director Giona Nazzaro. “It’s for being Barbet Schroeder.”
Despite focusing on harsher subjects in his previous documentaries, “General Idi Amin Dada: A Self Portrait,” “Terror’s Advocate” or “The Venerable W.,” this time Schroeder decided to follow painter Ricardo Cavallo.
“I have already done my ‘Trilogy of Evil.’ I could continue: the world is full of bad people. But then there was this friend of mine, who I thought was such a good person,” he tells Variety.
Cavallo, convinced that “true life exists in creation,” could teach anyone how to change their way of seeing, claims Schroeder, sacrificing everything for his art.

Mubi's retrospective Spotlight on Barbet Schroeder is showing summer 2020 - spring 2021.Above: Barbet SchroederTrying to situate Barbet Schroeder on the film world-trend-map of the past six decades can be a tricky task. Coming on the scene as part of the MacMahonist group1, writing for Cahiers du cinéma mostly about American cinema in the late 1950s, Schroeder should be correctly considered a direct descendant of the politique des auteur. However, unlike other acknowledged “sons” of the New Wave, such as Jean Eustache and Philippe Garrel, this inheritance was not directly passed on to Schroeder when he began producing-directing his own stories, following the steps of his much admired Otto Preminger—in fact, his affective bonds with Cahiers didn’t protect him from the occasional scolding from the magazine’s “third-generation” critics: Serge Daney accused Schroeder of turning the subject of his documentary General Idi Amin Dada: A Self Portrait (1974) into a stereotype,...

Why do we like horror and monster movies that routinely get labeled as ‘bad?’ Because many of them have great story ideas and look at the world from odd, warped viewpoints. Back when ‘warped’ wasn’t a prerequisite for All filmed entertainment (my exaggeration) this murderous rejuvenation tale could be appreciated as something unusual, even quirky. Jeez, the characters are even nastier than the people I know! Lovely Coleen Gray takes a chance on a downmarket Universal programmer and proves how well she can carry a movie, even through several dubious horror make-ups.

“Early Dirty”
By Raymond Benson
The filmmaker who made the iconic Clint Eastwood vehicle, Dirty Harry in 1971 also made something of an early test-run three years earlier in the form of a crime picture called Madigan. Starring Richard Widmark as a tough, cynical, and world-weary police detective in New York City, Madigan displays the same look, feel, and grit that the later Eastwood police procedural exhibits. And, like Harry Callahan, Dan Madigan doesn’t always follow the rules.
Don Siegel had been a solid craftsman since the 1950s, responsible for such works as Riot in Cell Block 11 (1954), the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), the admirable remake of The Killers (1964), and Coogan’s Bluff (1968). Likewise, Madigan is a well-made thriller with a hard-boiled plot and realistic characters portrayed by an excellent cast that includes Henry Fonda, Inger Stevens, and James Whitmore.

The seventies were rough on Hammer Films; horror tastes were passing them by, as audiences became enamored with grittier gutter grue and moved away from ripped bodices and cobwebbed halls. With the success of Rosemary’s Baby (1968) and The Exorcist (1973), it only made sense for the company to grasp for the popular straw in an effort to compete in the marketplace. To The Devil…A Daughter (1976) saw that straw burst into flames to the point that it became Hammer’s last horror film before initially shuttering the place in ’79. But my god, is it a spectacular pyre to behold.
Released in March in the UK and other parts of Europe before hitting North America in July, To The Devil did poor business to match its mostly abysmal reviews. This is understandable when one considers some of the lurid behavior on display; there are images conjured here that are closer to Fulci than Fisher.

While rumors of internal discontent have swirled since the release (and subsequent critical evisceration) of his heartwarming revenge thriller The Book of Henry, the Kiss of Death for Colin Trevorrow in the Star Wars Universe may just have been the moment Sarah Silverman laid a wet one on a dying boy genius as a parting gift from the suffering of this mortal coil.
Of course, this is speculation. This is the ultimate in screen sadism circa 1947, and it’s all in the debut film performance of Richard Widmark as a too-nasty-for-words hood who likes to shoot people in the stomach. Actually, Victor Mature is not bad in a grim story of a stool pigeon that tries to square himself with the law, and finds himself a target for mob murder.

In 1970s Hong Kong, the film industry was driven by star power. Most of the big names were at some point contracted to Shaw Brothers and actors like Alexander Fu Sheng, Jimmy Wang Yu, Gordon Liu or Ti Lung could always guarantee a crowd. As daring as certain elements of classic Hong Kong cinema still feel, the studios were rarely willing to take risks when it came to the stars, believing that audiences just wouldn't show up if they didn't recognise the name on the marquee.

As daring as certain elements of classic Hong Kong cinema still feel, the studios were rarely willing to take risks when it came to the stars, believing that audiences just wouldn't show up if they didn't recognise the name on the marquee.

The already-incredible line-up for the 2016 New York Film Festival just got even more promising. Ang Lee‘s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk will hold its world premiere at the festival on October 14th, the NY Times confirmed today. The adaptation of Ben Fountain‘s Iraq War novel, with a script by Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire), follows a teenage soldier who survives a battle in Iraq and then is brought home for a victory lap before returning.
Lee has shot the film at 120 frames per second in 4K and native 3D, giving it unprecedented clarity for a feature film, which also means the screening will be held in a relatively small 300-seat theater at AMC Lincoln Square, one of the few with the technology to present it that way. While it’s expected that this Lincoln Square theater will play the film when it arrives in theaters, it may be...

Master of Horror Alfred Hitchcock was supposedly fond of saying “Film your murders like love scenes, and film your love scenes like murders.” In essence, directors should be willing to go against the grain to create a frightening blend of sex and fear. The lines between what makes something erotic and what makes it terrifying can be blurrier than you might think.
Well, the directors of the following scenes probably heard that Hitchcock line at least once or twice (Some probably have it framed and hung in their offices). One thing these all have in common is that they’re downright steamy…right up until they’re incredibly disturbing and make you want to cover your eyes and hide your arousal.
Beware, for they may excite you, but they may also permanently stop the flow of blood to your favorite body parts.

Future's not the least bit worried about what many call the "Kiss of Death" -- Blac Chyna's "Future" tattoo on her hand -- and even though it's super early in their relationship, he thinks the ink is dope. Sources close to the couple say Chyna's tatt proves they have a real connection. We're told Future sees it as a very real, very permanent gesture of commitment ... and while fans are just getting used to it,...

Actor who was often cast as the understanding girlfriend or steadfast wife in film noirs of the 1940s and 50s such as Kiss of Death and The Killing
The 2001 book Dark City Dames: The Wicked Women of Film Noir contained interviews with six female stars of the genre who were at their peak in the 1940s and 50s. One surprising inclusion was Coleen Gray, who has died aged 92. Surprising because she was seldom cast as a femme fatale in the classic film noirs in which she appeared.
In fact, Gray, with her pretty features, slightly pointed nose and wide eyes, was often the only ethical or innocent element in the dark, doom-laden crime dramas. In Kiss of Death (1947), she is the understanding girlfriend of an ex-con (Victor Mature), helping him to make a new life. In Nightmare Alley (1947), she is the steadfast wife and partner of Stan (Tyrone Power) in a carnival mind-reading act,...

"America's Got Talent" was on fire Tuesday night, with several auditions held outdoors to showcase major stunts. There was Damone Rippy, the 16-year-old flyboarder who got the girls squealing, the Metal Mulisha freestyle motocross team performing "Kiss of Death," and Wally Glen -- who calls himself Pyro Boy, despite seeming closer to senior citizen than senior in high school.
For his act, Pyro Boy covers his body in fireworks, dances around, and explodes on stage. Hearing this, judge Howard Stern announced, "I feel like I've been institutionalized and we're all in one crazy house together, 'cause this sounds nuts to me. I mean, do women get excited by this when they see you covered in fireworks?" Pyro Boy: "They find it hot." Haha. Ba dum dum. But seriously, sometimes they should consider changing the name of the show to "America's Got Issues."

Robert Montgomery’s 1947 sophomore film, Ride the Pink Horse is an exciting film noir gem ripe for rediscovery, available on Blu-ray for the first time courtesy of Criterion’s digital restoration. Best known as a comedic actor and Oscar nominated for roles in Night Must Fall (1937) and Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941), Montgomery would eventually direct a handful of titles mostly neglected by the passage of time with the exception of his first directorial credit, the experimental noir Lady in the Lake (as the film is presented entirely from the point of view of its protagonist, as if we’re looking directly through his eyes), an adaptation of a Raymond Chandler novel. Lady premiered earlier in the very same year, and though it is often referenced for its structural technique, it’s his follow-up title that’s more impressive, as unique and off kilter as its enigmatic title.

"Well, I can just watch the commercials." For decades, that's been the Super Bowl Sunday motto of many who care more about pop culture than they do football. And why not? These $4 million ad spots are spectacles by design - short subject mini-films designed to dazzle you with celebrities, flash and, often, very odd subject matter. Here, then, are nine Super Bowl commercials that feature celebs doing some very odd, awkward or otherwise unusual things. They just might make you proclaim, "Wow, what a weird idea for a commercial!" - and then wonder how much these stars got paid. 1. Michael J. Fox...

I did a little better this past week in the movie department, watching five films including a couple of film noir classics last Sunday evening when I finished Kiss of Death and then watched Jules Dassin's The Naked City. Kiss of Death is decent enough, but The Naked City is pretty great, even though it is driven by a voice over narration, something that typically turns me right off, but the narration here isn't necessarily filling in blanks in the story as much as it is accompanying it. There's a tongue-in-cheek, matter of fact nature to the voice over dialogue that elevates the story. The film could still exist without it and, in my opinion, would probably be better without it, but it also doesn't entirely take away from what you're watching as the story of just another day in New York City unfolds, which is what I most certainly liked most.

Vancouver, BC. Three weeks ago, I had a position on the 200th Episode Gala red carpet for The CW's "Supernatural," a little-show-that-could that has gone from being seemingly near cancellation a few years ago to taking a regular place as one of the network's steadiest hits. Over the course of nearly two hours of red carpet time, I had swift and efficient conversations with many of the people who make the '67 Impala that is "Supernatural" hum and purr. I talked with stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, who have anchored "Supernatural" from the beginning, but also with co-stars including fan favorites Misha Collins and Mark Sheppard and Internet favorite Felicia Day, plus a trio of writers and producers. With the 200th "Supernatural" episode airing on Tuesday (November 11), I'll be running those quick Q&As in three parts, starting this this series of red carpet chats with a slew...

It feels like this past week was a busy one for me, but I certainly wasn't busy watching movies, though seeing Interstellar on Monday night definitely contributed to that feeling of having a lot to do. The Seattle press screening of Interstellar was at 7Pm on Monday night, which means getting back home around 10 or so, and then I had to get to bed because we had to record the podcast the next morning. After that I never quite caught up with work until Friday afternoon. Last night I did try and finish watching Kiss of Death after watching plenty of college football, but just couldn't stay awake any longer, so... it ends up Interstellar was my only movie of the week. This means I'm calling on all of you to carry the load when it comes to chatting up what you watched. I'm sure many of you also saw Interstellar,...

Over the years, American novelist and screenwriter Richard Price has seen many of his works make smooth transitions from the page to the screen. His book The Wanderers was adapted by Philip Kaufman into a now-iconic coming-of-age film, and Spike Lee’s take on Clockers earned strong reviews. Additionally, Price’s work as a screenwriter has been highly successful – among his accolades are an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay (for The Color of Money) and a Writers Guild of America Award (for HBO’s The Wire, on which he served as a writer). Now, Sony is betting on Price’s ability to deliver another strong drama by entering talks to adapt his upcoming work The Whites.

Hong Kong film tycoon whose studios and TV company enjoyed huge international success
Sir Run Run Shaw, who has died aged 106, was the most famous of the Shaw brothers who became synonymous with Chinese films in south-east Asia. He started with one cinema in pre-second world war Singapore: by the time Japan invaded, he had more than 130 houses. After the war he moved operations to Hong Kong, spotting a market dominated by foreign films and sub-standard local productions. When he saw a picture from his studio that was no good, he would throw it away and start again.
The Shaw brothers came from a family of businessmen in Ningbo on China's eastern coast, where people have been accustomed to migrate for generations, and where Run Run was born. In the mid-1920s, four of the six brothers became involved in films after the eldest, Runje, acquired a theatre as a bad debt.

The talented team of Tim Noble and Sue Webster have taken recycling to a whole new level: their unique sculptures, fashioned from scrap metal, wood, bones and collections of assorted garbage, seem like disturbing abstract shapes when viewed by themselves. But when a light is turned on them at just the right angle, their shadows fall across the wall, revealing eerie, terrifying silhouettes. "Cold Death" by Tim Noble and Sue Webster Noble and Webster carefully align the hunks of junk at specific angles and distances from a light source. The resulting images include a variety of human figures – including some macabre images that Vlad the Impaler might have enjoyed displaying on his castle walls. The lipstick returns in Monday 's (Nov. 18) episode of "Hostages."
Given that lipsticks have fun names, let's call this one Kiss of Death, since that is its purpose. This is the lipstick that cleverly camouflages the poison intended to kill the president during his rescheduled operation. FBI Agent Duncan Carlisle (Dylan McDermott) returns it to Dr. Ellen Sanders (Toni Collette) and orders her to place it in locker 715 on the fourth floor before the hospital goes into lockdown, preparing for the president's operation.
Two important characters are killed off in this episode: The president's Chief of Staff Quentin Creasy (Jeremy Bobb) and Secret Service Agent Stan Hoffman (Paul Calderon). They were on opposite sides of the plot, with the chief of staff being in on the conspiracy and Hoffman digging to find out why there was a mistake with the first scheduled operation on the president and why the operating room nurse supposedly committed suicide.

Movie stars, as we know them, are not so much dead in 2013 as much as they’re no longer making movies. Celebrity has stretched far beyond film or television; people become famous now without having accomplished much of anything, just for being at the right place at the right time, or tweeting out the right scandalous photo to set afire the comments sections at TMZ or Perez Hilton. Though movies cost more than they used to—both to make and to partake—they are less frequently headlined by a man or woman whose very presence ensures bankability. A handful of movie stars remain, yet even someone like Robert Downey, Jr. can only guarantee a movie will make back its profit and then some when he’s donned his Iron Man suit.

"Big Junior. That's one of those expressions like jumbo shrimp."
Every so often, a movie that is just full of big names manages to slip through the pop-culutre cracks. Such is the case for the 1995 flick Kiss of Death, an action-thriller with a cast list that boasts some of our all-time favorite actors. The main characters are played by David Caruso, Samuel L. Jackson and Nicolas Cage, which is a pretty great way to start out, but who are the supporting players? Turns out that Helen Hunt, Stanley Tucci, Michael Rapaport and Ving Rhames all have roles in the flick, which is certainly enough to make it a can't miss. But was she able to squash it completely? Things aren’t looking too good for ‘Team Matty.’
What the hell is wrong with Jenna (Ashley Rickards)? After acing another super-inappropriate writing assignment on the June 4 episode of Awkward, she admitted to herself that she’s indeed in a “flirtationship” with Collin (Nolan Funk). This girl, I swear.
And no matter how much Tamara (Jillian Rose Reed) urged her to crush the crush — while simultaneously coining adorable terms like “flirtationship” — the ever-fickle Ms. Hamilton couldn’t keep herself from fantasizing about her new pen pal.
She eventually gave Matty (Beau Mirchoff) a copy of her very-telling writing assignment, but as always, Matty was barely able to read the words on the paper — let alone between the lines, which would reveal a hopeless crush on Collin; or as I’ll always think of him, ‘that other evil Warbler from Glee.’
