A lot of the genre's popularity was kicked by the assertive sexuality on display in Adrian Lyne's 1987 ultra-hit "Fatal Attraction."

Music icon Madonna is no stranger to the film side of entertainment. The singer would crossover into movies on many occasions, including starring in a variety of projects like Body of Evidence, A League of Their Own and Dick Tracy. For a time, she would even be married to director Guy Ritchie, who she made a film with called Swept Away. In the past few years, Madonna had been reportedly developing a biopic about herself in which she would be in the rare position to both write and direct. Early last year, the project would not come together and she scrapped the project just ahead of her world tour.

Deadline is now reporting that the 80s pop icon teased on her Instagram that the project is once again in development. Madonna posted a slideshow that featured a series of pictures of her working on a typewriter and her table is littered with screenplay pages.

Madonna is back at work on her biopic, as the iconic singer confirmed on social media.

Madonna shared on Instagram that she is back writing the film’s screenplay, with the feature now titled “Who’s That Girl,” a classic reference in the annals of Madonna lore. “Who’s That Girl” is also the title of James Foley’s 1987 comedy feature (which marked one of Madonna’s first movie roles and co-starred Griffin Dunne), a soundtrack single for the film, and Madonna’s world tour that same year.

Spike Lee defends casting Madonna in Girl 6, saying he didn't care about backlash and she was the right choice. Madonna's acting career had mixed success, with hits like Desperately Seeking Susan and A League of Their Own, but also many flops. Girl 6 was another commercial and critical failure for Madonna, but Lee stands by his decision to cast her.

Spike Lee recalls the backlash he received after casting pop sensation Madonna in his 1996 critically mixed comedy, Girl 6. Released 28 years ago, Girl 6 followed the story of young actor Judy (Theresa Randle), who becomes disillusioned with her job after being asked to expose her breasts during an audition. Judy secures a new job at a call center, eventually finding a sense of purpose as a phone sex operator. Lee cast Madonna as boss #3 in the comedy, playing a well-manicured supervisor who fends off over-the-top requests from their clients.

Spike Lee didn’t care that Madonna wasn’t quite in vogue when casting his 1996 film “Girl 6.”

Lee, who has counted Madonna as a personal friend for years, told Vulture that he wanted the “Material Girl” singer to have a cameo in the feature after her bestie Debi Mazar was also cast. Mazar played a phone-sex operator whose coworker (Theresa Randle) is an aspiring actress. Madonna stars as their boss.

Yet Madonna’s acting career was in a downward spiral at the time after her two box office flops, “Body of Evidence” and “Dangerous Game.” Lee, regardless, was undeterred.

In the pantheon of Erotic Thrillers, Body of Evidence is an odd one. It falls into the even more niche sub-category of courtroom thrillers, which spend as much time on the naughty bits as they do with witnesses on the stand or in depositions (see also: Disclosure).

Enter Body of Evidence. In the film, femme fatale Rebecca Carlson (Madonna) is arrested and charged with murder when her older, wealthy boyfriend John Marsh (Michael Forest) is found dead. Turns out the pair had quite the risqué sex life (or at least as risqué as mainstream Hollywood fare was willing to address in 1993): they were having non-missionary sex that involved some light bondage (ie: restraints such as belts and handcuffs).

District Attorney Robert Garrett (Joe Mantegna) makes it clear to the jury in his opening remarks that Rebecca’s body is the murder weapon. She induced Marsh’s fatal heart attack...

“The Help” is coming to Freevee on June 1. The top-notch cast includes Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, and Jessica Chastain. The plot focuses on two black maids who work in white homes in Jackson, Mississippi, in the 1960s. Stone plays a writer who wants to help the women chronicle the hardships they face, so their injustices are exposed nationwide. “The Help” chronicles real-life conditions in the Deep South, while celebrating female friendship and empowerment.

Amazon Prime Video is ringing in the month of July with a smorgasbord of new titles, from “House of Gucci” (previously available to purchase or rent on Amazon Prime Video) to classic films like “Clueless,” “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “Yentl.” Apart from the Lady Gaga-starring crime drama, which becomes available to stream on July 2, most other titles will join the platform on July 1.

The streamer is also debuting a handful of Amazon originals this month. The comic book series adaptation “Paper Girls” will hit the streamer at the very end of the month. “Warriors on the Field,” a documentary about Indigenous players in the Australian Football League, premieres July 8. Indie drama “Don’t Make Me Go” and coming-of-age series “Forever Summer: Hamptons” debut July 15, followed by the Billy Porter-directed “Anything’s Possible” and the boxing feature “Prizefighter” on July 22.

Exclusive: Danielle Pinnock, a star of breakout CBS comedy Ghosts, has signed with ICM Partners for representation.

On Ghosts, Pinnock plays Alberta, a Prohibition-era lounge singer turned ghost who is trapped in a modern-day country estate recently inherited by two unexpecting new tenants. The hit comedy series recently wrapped its first season and has been renewed for a second season on CBS.

Two-time Berlinale prize winner Małgorzata Szumowska will write and direct “The Gambler Wife,” a revelatory portrait of novelist Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s wife Anna Snitkina, to be produced by Russia’s Hype Film, Variety can reveal.

BTS were the big winners at the 2021 American Music Awards, prevailing in all three of their categories: Favorite Pop Duo or Group, Favorite Pop Song for “Butter,” and Artist of the Year. In the top category, they defeated Taylor Swift, who had won that award six times before, including the last three in a row. In fact, this is only the second time Swift has ever lost when nominated. Some horror movies, especially slasher flicks, seem to get a reboot or a sequel every few years. Those movies have a lasting legacy with audiences that love the scare. While The Faculty hasn't seen any reboots, it's a reboot itself of 1951's The Puppet Masters, and one that's become a cult classic.

When it was released in 1998, it was full of actors who appeared in a lot of '90s movies, like Clea Duvall and Elijah Wood, or actors on the rise, like Jordana Brewster and Josh Hartnett. The combination of new talent and known players worked in the movie's favor as the audience didn't know which teen was really an alien in disguise. A similar combination of new faces and known teen talent would need to be used to get the same effect today.

October’s here and it’s time to get spooked. After last year’s superb “’70s Horror” lineup, the Criterion Channel commemorates October with a couple series: “Universal Horror,” which does what it says on the tin (with special notice to the Spanish-language Dracula), and “Home Invasion,” which runs the gamut from Romero to Oshima with Polanski and Haneke in the mix. With multiple high-profile releases — some acclaimed, some commercially successful, and some both — and myriad buzzy new artists making big splashes in the genre, what should we expect in the rap field this year at the Grammys?
