The variety series Emmy race hasn’t always been a boys’ club. But Samantha Bee is bringing balance back to a category that had become way too male-dominated.
“Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” is the first female-fronted series to be nominated in the relatively new Outstanding Variety Talk Series category, which was created in 2015. That’s when the TV Academy split the Outstanding Variety Series category into two: variety talk and variety sketch series.
The first year out, “Inside Amy Schumer” won the variety sketch Emmy, becoming the first female-fronted variety show to win a series Emmy since Tracey Ullman’s “Tracey Takes On” in 1997. But that was also the first time a variety show starring a woman had even been nominated in the variety series field since “Tracey Takes On” in 1999.

Samantha Bee praised President Donald Trump for finally uniting the country with a single word, "covfefe," on Full Frontal Wednesday. Bee broke down the President's surreal late-night tweet, which stirred the hearts and minds of anyone on Twitter early Wednesday morning.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: Which current TV couple is giving you relationship goals?
Todd VanDerWerff (@tvoti), Vox
Whenever people ask me what TV show is the best currently running, my go-to answer is “The Americans” for a variety of reasons (it’s really that good, it’s one most people haven’t seen, etc.). But a big reason for that is thanks to the sterling marriage of Philip and Elizabeth Jennings, whose icy cold love fills my heart with joy. Think about it: When the series began, these two spies were just pretending to have a functional relationship — only to have realized that their pretending was essentially the same as something real.

Mel Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge.
If there was an Aacta award for Australia's busiest screenwriter, Andrew Knight would take the prize in a cakewalk..
Last year the veteran of Seachange and Full Frontal worked on three films and two television series.
In between trips to La and London (where he's developing a film with Jonathan Teplitzky, Shakespeare in Love's David Parfitt and Essential's Ian Collie), Knight managed to churn out a new season of Rake and another Jack Irish, the latter of which premieres this Thursday on the ABC.
"It was just insanity", Knight said..
"I'm taking a huge break at the moment. I don't know how long, but I'm taking a long time off. I'm off to India shortly with my wife".
"I was writing Rake scripts on planes, and producing Jack Irish with [Ian] Collie. The year's a blur for me. I think the public's going to be...

However, there are decisions we can make to ensure that this new year is a good year. Let's start by putting to rest some of the annoying stuff we didn't need in 2015. 1. The man bunIs 2015 going to be remembered as the year a handful of guys decided to pile their hair on top of their head with reckless disregard for whether they had long enough locks to even attempt such a hairstyle? It all started with Exposed. I’m not sure what brought this 1971 Swedish sexploitation film to the suggestion portion of my Netflix account (presumably the roster of Jess Franco films recently added), but after reading the description, I figured it was worth a shot: “A pretty young teen finds her innocence lost when an unguarded night of revelry yields shameful secrets, and a stack of nude pictures that could ruin her life. But to get her hands on the negatives, she’ll have to expose herself even further.” That is indeed the basic plot of the film, which plays out exactly as one would expect for such fare. But what was unexpected while watching Exposed (also known as the much less enticing Diary of a Rape), was the 21-year-old star of the film. Her name is Christina Lindberg.
Exposed, for lack of a better phrase, is what it is. It...

Andrew Knight is not a critic of Australia.s film schools but if he were invited to lecture on screenwriting he.d take a radically different approach.

Kim Kardashian West got candid during a visit to the Et set about her 15-pound weight gain and what she's doing to live healthier.
News: Kim Kardashian on Bruce Jenner
"I just started seeing a nutritionist, because I don't understand why ... I mean I do [understand] because I eat really bad," Kim admitted to Et, explaining that her go-to dishes are soul food items. "I just started to eat really healthy and work out more and just try to change my lifestyle, especially when you have a baby. I want to know what to cook and how to cook healthier. We've just changed our lifestyles."
Making a change in lifestyle is no small task, especially for a couple as busy as Kim, 34, and husband Kanye West, 37. Between the amount of work and travel associated with their professions, rumors have sprouted that the two moguls could be growing apart, but Kim says those rumors couldn't be more wrong.

Jennifer Garner is not ashamed of having a baby bump.
Jennifer Garner knows how to make everything adorable, from a wardrobe malfunction to perpetual baby bump speculation.
The 42-year-old actress, who already has three kids with her husband Ben Affleck, faced tabloid scrutiny this past August when she stepped out with what appeared to be a baby bump.
News: Jennifer Garner on Ben Affleck's Full Frontal Scene: 'You're Welcome'
The pictures were analyzed and scrutinized. Was it a loose shirt or was she pregnant? A couple days later, her rep responded to the rumors saying that she was not pregnant.
So now Jennifer herself is clearing the air about that baby bump. She tells Ellen DeGeneres today, "Apparently, I have a baby bump. And I'm here to tell you that I do."
At which point, the audience began to wildly scream with excitement until she shut that down.

After struggling as a stand-up — maybe the only stage medium where the audience is free to yell terrible things at you if you're no good, they're inebriated or if they just feel like it — the world of trailers and catered meals that is film acting must seem like a cakewalk in comparison. So it's no surprise that some great stand-ups, including Robin Williams, Lily Tomlin and Jamie Foxx, have gone on to become great actors as well.
But sometimes, the guys and gals who started in stand-up end up better suited for other careers in the moviemaking business, catch their big break elsewhere and leave the damp basement stank of comedy clubs behind permanently. Here are seven actors you might not know made their hay — or at least tried to — by telling jokes before they hit the big screen.

Australian of many hats (and presumably berets, gloves, scarves and other assorted fineries) Eric Bana, is close to signing on to star in Lone Survivor. The Peter Berg-directed flick based on the events of Seal Team 10’s “Operation Red Wing,” where the Navy SEALs were ambushed while on a covert assassination mission in Afghanistan in 2005. Bana is to round out a cast that already includes Marky Mark (Wahlberg), Ben Foster, Emile Hirsch, and Taylor Kitsch in the role of “Taylor Kitsch is acting.” Peter Berg will also be handling the screenplay duties on this one, adapting the book of the same name that was penned by Marcus Luttrell. Complex – and my pants’ – favourite, Mark Wahlberg is set to play Luttrell, the member of the expedition who wrote the book about his experiences upon which Lone Survivor is based. No telling at this stage who the ‘lone survivor’ of the title is going to be.

Gpy&R Melbourne has launched a new campaign for Heinz Beanz.
The campaign, which carries the tagline ‘Bust out the Beanz’, is a call for Australians to rediscover the famous food that is often left in the cupboard.
The TV ad is voiced by comedian Kim Gyngell, known for his work on Full Frontal and The Librarians.
Tom Ward, head of strategy and insights at Gpy&R, said: “We didn’t need to convince people to buy baked beans, or even Heinz Beanz. Every day Heinz Beanz move off the supermarket shelf, into the trolly and into the cupboard. The problem is that all too often that is where they stay, to the point that people will sometimes end up with two or three cans tucked away.”
The campaign breaks on Sunday, and runs until the end of the year.

In a show of solidarity for her sister Kim, Khloe Kardashian has renounced her support for the animal rights group PETA following last Thursday's flour bombing by a supposed member of the anti-fur foundation.
Is Khloe Really a Kardashian?
Airing her frustration with the organization's actions, Khloe chided the group for their "bully"-like behavior in a message recently posted to her website.
"I'm sure you all heard what happened to Kim last week," Khloe wrote to her blog. "I just received word that the woman responsible has very close ties to PETA, despite PETA publicly stating otherwise. Not only has PETA lied to the public, but they have proved that they support this kind of behavior."
Khloe Kardashian Sued for Alleged Assault
Kim's sister, who posed nude for a 2008 campaign with the foundation, maintains she will remain anti-fur, but will no longer rep the company.

We know nearly nothing about the plot of Judd Apatow’s next comedy, but at least we now know who’s in it. Eric Bana, Jason Schwartzman and Jonah Hill are the latest to join the cast of “Funny People,” according to Variety.
Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen and Leslie Mann already boarded the project, which is set in the world of standup comedy and focuses on a comedian who has a near-death experience. That’s pretty much everything Apatow wants us to know.
“Suberbad” screenwriters Rogen and Evan Goldberg will exec produce the film, which heads into production this September. The release of “Funny People” is scheduled for next summer.
Although it’s hard to believe, Bana already has some experience in the standup milieu. He kicked off his career in 1993 in the Australian comedy series “Full Frontal.”
Hill, an Apatow regular, was last seen in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” Schwartzman...
