One of the most intriguing and astonishing things in this movie, in which Ravel's chamber music and it's interpretation by the main character play such a prominent role, is the fact that Emmanuelle Béart really seems to play the violin amazingly well herself. Never before did I see a movie in which an actor or actress play a musician's role not violating the visual plausibility of being the performer in person!I read that Emmanuelle Béart learnt to play the violin to be able to play her part. I can hardly believe so. She must have learnt, practiced and played the violin for many years. Every sounding note (played by the famous Jean-Jacques Kantorow) is perfectly synchronized with the corresponding (virtual) tones seemingly produced by Béarts fingers. The way she keeps the instrument, her right arm movements, the powerful downbows, the perfectly rhythmical pizzicato's, the ornamental vibrato's, everything looked absolutely natural and credible. This perfect match between video and sound may be established technically in the film studio, but it remains unthinkable that Emmanuelle Béart did not play herself these works in a skilful manner. And if anything was manipulated, then I guess it must have been the video and not the sound of the performance by Kantorow.The only thing we cannot take into consideration is the sound produced by Béart ... Her intonation may not have been as perfect as her musical appearance.Is there anybody who can tell me whether Emmanuelle Béart has played the violin long before this movie, and also how well she mastered the art of violin playing in real life?
