Women don’t have it easy in Hollywood. And they didn’t back in the ’80s when former New York Times Magazine editor Lynda Obst got her start as a producer. As famously chronicled in her 1996 book “Hello, He Lied — and Other Truths from the Hollywood Trenches,” she sold her first movie “Flashdance” (1983) to Dawn Steel at Paramount, only to have the newly minted production team of Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer take over along with all the credit for its breakout success. Still, it was a winner for the Associate Producer, and she was on her way.
Always a heavy smoker, Obst passed away at age 74 from Copd (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). She was devoted to her family, including her brother, agent Rick Rosen, and son Oly, a producer/manager, whom she has described as “my confidant and best friend.”

Lynda Obst, who had producing credits on high-profile films including “Sleepless in Seattle,” “Flashdance” and “Adventures in Babysitting,” died Tuesday in Los Angeles. She was 74.
“I was immensely proud of her. She was a trailblazer for women in the industry at a time when it was very difficult for women to have prominent roles. She was passionate about her work but even more passionate about her family,” her brother, WME’s Rick Rosen, said to Variety.
Obst told the Hollywood Reporter earlier this year that she had been battling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Most recently, she served as producer or executive producer on TV series including “The Hot Zone,” “Good Girls Revolt,” “Hot in Cleveland” and “Helix.” Obst’s final feature producing credit was Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” in 2014. Among her other credits were “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” “Hope Floats,” “Bad Girls” and “The Fisher King.

Obst had previously been open about suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or Copd.
The producer’s long list of hit films includes Flashdance, The Fisher King, One Fine Day, Contact, Hope Floats, Interstellar and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. She also executive produced Sleepless In Seattle, TVLand’s Hot in Cleveland and had a deal at Sony Pictures Television.

Tom Hanks was leading the romantic comedy genre in the 90s with Meg Ryan, but his wife, Rita Wilson, revealed that he actually turned down starring in another classic.
During a recent episode of the Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi podcast, the actress-producer said Hanks was asked to star in 1989’s When Harry Met Sally…, but declined the role.
“People probably don’t know this, but Tom was offered When Harry Met Sally…, and he turned it down because he was going through a divorce and he was very happy to be not married,” Wilson said. “And so he could not understand that a person going through a divorce would have anything other than just like, ‘I’m so happy.’”

“The panhandle of Texas is a really forgotten part of the world. It’s not a pretty place; it’s dusty and it smells like cow shit, but it has its beauty. And the people are just the best,” says William Clark Green, who with three fellow Texas singer-songwriters is hoping to shine a light on an overlooked region of the state with their new group and album.

From the opening scenes of “Tiger King,” it’s clear that Joe Exotic, the star of Netflix’s latest documentary sensation, was ready to do just about anything to become famous. Throughout the series, he attempts to film his own reality show, runs for the governor of Oklahoma and even tries his hand at country music.
His musical pursuits were glossed over in the documentary, with a few of his perplexing, tiger-saturated music videos mainly used as B-roll. However, with 17 music videos currently housed on Exotic’s YouTube channel — each one wackier than the next — there looks to be enough material for an additional seven-episode series.
Mostly released between 2013 and 2015, Exotic’s songs touch on everything from love and loss to advocating for causes, including exotic animal ownership and a biker gang that takes in neglected children.
The songs are catchy and well-written — the vocals reminiscent of the mullet-and-10-gallon-hat-sporting...

Mild spoilers for Netflix’s “Tiger King.” Don’t read until you finish.
If you’ve seen “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness” on Netflix, then you already know that one of the most wonderful things about this almost unbelievable true-crime docuseries is the extremely corny, low-rent pop and country music that keeps popping up again and again.
If you’ve finished all seven episodes, we’re happy to confirm that these songs are all real, like, actually real. Not parodies, not tongue in cheek, but all recorded and shared with deadly seriousness by the two people whose conflict is at the center of the series: Joe Exotic of Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park in Oklahoma, and Carole Baskin of Big Cat Rescue in Florida.
And because we assume that like us you’re now hellbent on watching the full-length videos, we’ve stepped in to help. Below, please enjoy all the weird,...

Chicago – Getting the right chemistry in casting a film is crucial in a drama, and the new film “Just Mercy” anchors lead actors Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx with two vital characters actors. Karan Kendrick portrays Millie McMillian, the wife of Foxx’s character, who is on death row. Tim Blake Nelson is Ralph Myers, a key witness.
“Just Mercy” is the based-on-truth story of Walter McMillian (Foxx), an African American man who is accused of a 1990s murder he did not commit. The irony of this accusation is that it takes place in Monroeville, Alabama. This is the hometown of Harper Lee, who set the scenario in her famous book about racial injustice, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” in a town like Monroeville. Enter Bryan Stevenson (Jordan), a fresh out of law school attorney looking to make a difference. With the help of Eva Ansley (Brie Larson), he takes on Walter’s case,...

'Professor Marston and the Wonder Women' Director on the Superhero's Kinky Origin Story (Exclusive)
If you saw Wonder Woman this summer -- and the record-setting $800 million worldwide box office indicates a lot of people saw Wonder Woman this summer -- then you know the story of how Diana, Princess of Themyscira, became the superhero Wonder Woman, protector of mankind. How Wonder Woman ended up on the pages of comic books in the first place is a story unto itself however, told in Professor Marston and the Wonder Women: In 1941, Dr. William Moulton Marston (played by Luke Evans), his wife, Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall), and their lover, Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote), created the character to save the world...through psychology. Director Angela Robinson (D.E.B.S.) could never have predicted, though, that her Wonder Woman indie would arrive in theaters mere months after one of the biggest movies of the year.
"I'm getting a lot of credit for having the foresight to know that in the summer of 2017, the 75-years-in-the-making, long-gestating Wonder Woman movie would...

“Wonder Woman” is expected to top the weekend; claims that it will be the most successful film ever directed by a woman will soon follow. That’s possible, but far from guaranteed: While Hollywood’s pretzel logic would suggest that women rarely direct blockbusters, Patty Jenkins’ success story will have a lot of competition.
The dearth of women directors trusted by studios to helm top movies becomes even more suspect when adjusting grosses to current ticket prices. Despite limited opportunities, 14 have grossed over $200 million, and 40 total over $100 million when calculated at current numbers.
Below, we go into detail about the top directors and their movies; there’s a lot to see, with some compelling and surprising conclusions. However, more than any other statistic, here’s one that stands out: Among the most successful female directors, after adjusting to current ticket prices, the career average per film gross is over $100 million for several.

During an exclusive sit-down interview with Et, the 73-year-old music legend reflects on marrying his manager and longtime partner, and how the two kept their relationship from the public for nearly 40 years.

The Performer | Cameron Monaghan
The Show | Gotham
The Episode | “Mad City: The Gentle Art of Making Enemies” (Jan. 30, 2017)
The Performance | Monaghan is so good at being colorfully bad, it almost makes us angry every time one of his arcs as that joker, Jerome Valeska, comes to an end.
It’s always a precarious thing to raise comparisons with the late Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning turn as The Dark Knight‘s actual Joker, but Monaghan’s latest “swan song” more than ever flirted with that kind of greatness. Between his voice, his gait and the way he carried himself with a...

"This is my life! I had to fight for this..." A trailer has debtued for an indie drama adapted from a stage play called "Blackbird". The film is titled Una and premiered at the Telluride & Toronto Film Festivals last year to mixed reviews. Rooney Mara stars as a troubled young woman who comes to a man's work to confront him about their past, and things get a little crazy. Ben Mendelsohn also stars, and the cast includes Riz Ahmed in a small role, as well as Tobias Menzies and Tara Fitzgerald. While some critics flipped for this film, I found it utterly boring, and it feels way too much like a stage play and not at all like a film (taking place mostly in one drab location). It doesn't work well as a film, but that's just my own take. Have a look. Here's the first official trailer for Benedict Andrews' Una,...

Debbie Reynolds was famous for her perky onscreen personality, but behind that sweet smile she was hiding a painful past.
When Reynolds, who died Wednesday, just one day after her daughter Carrie Fisher passed away, did a joint interview with Fisher on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2011, she reluctantly discussed the at-times volatile relationship she had with her mother Maxine. Fisher went so far as to describe Reynolds’ mother as abusive.
“The big, big thing about my mom is that she had a very bad mom,” Fisher said on the show. “She had a very difficult, mean, punishing mother. My grandmother,...

He may be the Starboy, but life in the spotlight wasn’t always easy for The Weeknd.
In this week’s issue of Billboard, the Canadian singer admits that he’s suffered from stage fright.
“I used to be very nervous, especially about performing on TV,” explains The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye. “It’s usually just nerves when somebody sounds bad. People who become famous for signing are usually pretty good at singing.”
The 26-year-old has discovered that recognition helps partially soothe the fears, however.

Let's be honest: last night should have actually been called the Bey-MAs. From her incredible angel-like gown to bringing Blue Ivy as her guest to her jaw-dropping, 15-minute performance, Beyoncé reigned over the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards. And to think, some of her amazing surprises weren't even caught on-stage! For example, during one of Chance the Rapper's backstage interviews, Queen B decided to pop up behind him and make her presence known, totally catching both him and the reporter off-guard. "Oh my God! That was awesome," the rapper gasped after realizing who had hugged him. "This is my life!" Bey, not wanting to be...

It's back.
On Tuesday, Bachelor in Paradise season 3 premiered, fulfilling all of our hopes and dreams of spending the summer watching Bachelor and Bachelorette castaways hook up with and discard each other in a steady, seamless rotation, week by week. It's a beautiful disaster and we can't look away, so for that, we thank you, ABC.
Of course, the two-hour season premiere boasted the show's signature abundance of alcohol, sloppy make-out sessions and tear-soaked confessionals, but what everyone will undoubtedly be talking about is the return of Chad Johnson, perhaps the franchise's most infamous (read: hated) character.

The recent wave of gun violence and shooting rampages in San Bernardino, California, and Colorado Springs, hit especially close to home for actress Jennifer Hudson. “This is reality for me. This is my life. A part of my life,” she told W Magazine, recalling her own personal loss in a heartfelt interview published Wednesday. The “Chi-Raq” star and former “American Idol” finalist lost her mother, brother and seven-year-old nephew in 2008 when they were shot and killed in their Chicago home. William Balfour, the estranged husband of Hudson’s sister Julia, was later convicted of the triple murder and given three...

Jennifer Hudson is dealing with a topic that hits very close to home. The actress stars in Spike Lee's film Chi-Raq, in theaters now, where she plays a mother of a young girl killed by gunfire, a decision that was difficult for the star, who experienced a horrific gun tragedy in her personal life. "Yeah, of course. It's like, you're asking a lot," Hudson told W magazine when asked if she hesitated on taking the role. "This is reality for me. This is my life. A part of my life. And I definitely had that moment of like, 'Are you serious?' But when I really thought about it, I understood why he came to me and I thought, 'You know what? It's worth me telling my story so...

Alex Garland, screenwriter of “28 Days Later,” “Sunshine” and “Never Let Me Go,” makes an impressive directorial debut with cerebral sci-fi thriller “Ex Machina” (in theaters today), but Garland waves off the achievement of leaping to directing as “just next in a continuum.” “The truth was that there was no epiphany moment about directing, because I just don’t dignify the directing role the way we’re supposed to,” the British filmmaker told The Dissolve. “There are a few people — like Woody Allen, he’s an auteur, and I’m cool with that. But for me, directing is about collaboration.” Whether directing is a logical next step or a hard-sought achievement for screenwriters, it’s often done by telling studios, “Hey, here’s my next screenplay. You can have it as long as I get to direct.” Preston Sturges — at the time the highest paid screenwriter in Hollywood — is noted for...
