If Ayn Rand had dared to write a character who was a genius gay white male unable to reconcile his hedonistic tendencies and is thus thrown out of the heavenly refuge of Galt’s Gulch back to the hellishness of Earth, he might have resembled someone like Williams S. Burroughs. A non-conformist who set himself apart from the already non-conformist Beat generation he rose out of in the 1950s, Burroughs more readily identified as a heroin addict than a gay man, despite blatant suggestions to the contrary in his writings. Perhaps most famous for his 1959 novel Naked Lunch, and the subsequent obscenity trials it overcame in the ensuing decade (notably adapted into a pretty damn good film by David Cronenberg in 1992), he has long been a bruised icon for the social refugee.…...

A mere nine months after the triumphant Grand Slam of Challengers, director Luca Guadagnino is back again. Queer is a very different beast to his earlier, tennis-based ménage à trois: less straightforwardly entertaining, murkier and messier in its intentions and approach. But it has all of his recurring themes and obsessions: sex and desire and longing and melancholy. It’s also perhaps almost too woozy for its own good.

Challengers writer Justin Kuritzkes reunites with his director to (loosely) adapt the novella of the same name by writer William S. Burroughs. Less subversive than Burroughs’ most famous work, Naked Lunch, in Guadagnino and Kuritzkes’ hands it becomes more intensely personal, leaning into the book’s autobiographical elements, an unorthodox tribute to the Beat Generation hero.

The trailer for “Queer,” starring Daniel Craig and “Outer Banks” breakout Drew Starkey, has been released by A24. Helmed by “Challengers” and “Call Me By Your Name” director Luca Guadagnino from a screenplay by Justin Kuritzkes, the film is set for a theatrical release starting Nov. 27.

“Queer,” based on the semi-autobiographical novel by William Burroughs, is set in Mexico City during the 1940s and follows William Lee (Craig), an American expat living mostly in isolation among American college students and bar owners. He becomes infatuated with a discharged American Navy serviceman, Eugene Allerton (Starkey), a drug user who eventually becomes involved with Lee after initially being indifferent to his advances. Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville and Omar Apollo co-star.

“Queer” had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, where it competed for the Golden Lion. The film went on to screen the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival.

Burroughs wrote “Queer” while waiting to be sentences for the murder of his common-law wife Joan Vollmer, who he shot in the head while attempting a “William Tell routine.” (This incident was dramatized in David Cronenberg’s adaptation of Burroughs’ “Naked Lunch.

The author's horror-focused stories have a way of crawling into our psyches and staying there, appealing to both morbid curiosities and integral truths about the human condition. There is a reason why King's works are molded into cinematic adaptations time and again, even when some stories inherently feel more suited to the written medium, along with the specific interiority it demands from readers. When King stumbled upon his inspiration for "It" in 1978 while living with his family in Boulder, Colorado, and finally began penning the novel in 1980, it felt like a massive moment for the pulp horror genre, where more people started gravitating towards stories of a similar variety. Although the book's reception at the time of its release was enveloped by controversy, "It" received favorable reviews for its visceral, uncompromising exploration of the loss of childhood innocence, and the horrors that come with it.

Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of William S. Burrough’s second novel, Queer, begins, shall we say, peculiarly. Sinéad O’Connor’s haunting cover of Nirvana’s “All Apologies” scores overhead shots of what we soon realize is Burroughs’s own writing space, every object alluding with cringey literalness to the Beat Generation author’s thorny mythos.

“Everyone is gay,” per “All Apologies,” and it quickly becomes clear that Guadagnino and screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes are content to stay on the surface of that knotty lyric and plenty more besides. They would seem to think that plumbing depths is for snootily cultured queens. Queer prefers to oafishly stick, and not always unentertainingly so, to mincing façades, beginning with Daniel Craig’s performance as Burroughs avatar William Lee.

Sideshow and Janus Films have acquired all U.S. rights to “The Shrouds,” written and directed by Cronenberg and starring Vincent Cassel as a tech mogul who invents a technology that allows you to watch your loved one rot in their grave.

The latest freakout from the Canadian auteur premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year (where it screened in competition) and recently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival as a special presentation. It will have its U.S. premiere next month as part of the main slate of the New York Film Festival. Sideshow and Janus are planning a spring 2025 release.

Sideshow and Janus Films have picked up the U.S. rights to David Cronenberg’s sci-fi drama The Shrouds.

The U.S. deal follows a world bow in Cannes, a North American premiere in Toronto and additional play at the New York Film Festival next month. Sideshow and Janus plan a spring 2025 theatrical release.

Sideshow and Janus Films are also reteaming with body horror director Cronenberg after earlier releases of films like Videodrome and Naked Lunch. “This is Cronenberg at his wittiest, most personal and romantic in this thought-provoking thriller with knockout performances from Vincent Cassel and Diane Kruger,” the distributors said in a joint statement.

Cronenberg originally pitched the project, inspired by his real-life grief over the loss of his wife in 2017, to Netflix executives as a TV series. But after financing a first episode, the streaming giant passed on going further with the project.

So a feature film it is, and Deadline reports that Sideshow and Janus Films have acquired all U.S. distribution rights to the film, with their plan being to give it a theatrical release sometime in the spring of 2025.

Deadline notes that they’re planning a Spring 2025 release for the film.

Audiences hungry for David Cronenberg’s infamous brand of body horror may have hoped that 2022’s Crimes of the Future marked his return to the genre. That film, which formed an unofficial trilogy that began with 1983’s Videodrome and continued in 1999’s eXistenZ, featured several callbacks to the Canadian director’s recurring visual and thematic interests.

The Shrouds, Cronenberg’s latest, is even less of a genre film than Crimes of the Future, though it does share its predecessor’s same dark sense of humour, as well as the director’s tendency to revisit or reconsider his previous work.

The film is ostensibly set in 2023, four years after the death of Karsh (Vincent Cassel)’s wife, Becca (Diane Kruger). Becca died of bone cancer and Karsh has yet to recover, as the opening scene of him crying during a visit to the dentist proves.

So far aggregator MetaCritic has logged 13 reviews of the film, which overall gets a “generally favorable” rating of 75. Near the beginning of Irvin Kershner's 1980 sci-fi flick "The Empire Strikes Back," the psychic rebel warrior Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is riding alone through the snowy drifts of the distant planet Hoth, mounted on the back of a bipedal beast of burden called a tauntaun. He is on the lookout for any sign of the Empire, hunting the rebels after the destruction of their superweapon, the Death Star. Rather suddenly, Luke is attacked by a wampa, a humanoid yeti native to the planet. The wampa kills the tauntaun, claws Luke, and drags the hapless rebel back to its lair, presumably to be eaten.

The wampa is only seen in flashes. Luke sees a roaring face for a split second and a waving claw. For the 1997 Special Edition of "The Empire Strikes Back" — a notorious re-release that remastered and reworked most of the effects shots — a full-bodied shot of the wampa was included.

After eight different search and rescue missions took place in the following months, human remains were discovered in the area on June 27.
