Aldis Hodge, producer and star of Cross, and Lauren Anderson, head of content and brand innovation at Amazon MGM Studios, say the value of the Prime Video series results from its local flavor.
When scripts for the Washington-set show underwent a “D.C. pass,” Hodge recalled, a producer hailing from the city insisted on a character calling another one “Slim,” as opposed to “son” or “dog,” as they might in other cities. “That one word generated, I would say, millions of viewership value,” Hodge said. “So many people commented and said, ‘The moment I heard “Slim” I was in.'”
Anderson said specific details can give a production “universality,” enabling it to be enjoyed by wider audiences. Hodge said Washington in particular gets reduced on screen to simple cutaways of the U.S. Capitol building or politcos walking down hallways. “We only see a political idea. Not a political truth,...

James Gunn has always been blunt about his opinions because he’s not the kind of person who would hold his words back to please others. The filmmaker has worked on franchises like Guardians of the Galaxy and took on some bold risks. On the other hand, we have Martin Scorsese, who is hailed as one of the best directors.

So Gunn making a remark about Scorsese’s project could potentially anger a lot of cinephiles. The latter’s name commands respect in every corner of the industry, and publicly criticizing his work could open the floodgates to hate comments.

James Gunn seems to have complicated opinions about remakes, and he put them forth in a 2001 interview with Fanboy Planet. He spoke about reimagining George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead.

Martin Scorsese may be revered as one of our greatest living filmmakers, but he has often had to fight tooth and nail to bring his visions to the big screen. This is largely due to the box office. Yes, "Raging Bull," "The King of Comedy," and "Goodfellas" are considered masterpieces, but they were not hits in theatrical release. So when, after being continuously passed over for Academy Award recognition, he set his sights on making his mobbed-up magnum opus "Gangs of New York," just about every studio in town declined to bankroll his dream.
It wasn't like he'd sprung the project on the film industry. Alberto Grimaldi, the renowned Italian producer of classics by Federico Fellini, Sergio Leone, and Bernardo Bertolucci, had taken out an ad announcing the production of the film way back in 1977. But when the New Hollywood revolution died with the bank-breaking failure of Michael Cimino's...

It is almost Christmas time and everyone is getting ready for the holiday night, but for Dwayne Johnson, it seems like he does not have the luxury of watching his own Christmas movie as his kids wanted something else.

Martin Scorsese's "The Departed" is not the most important film in the director's oeuvre, nor is it his best (it's not even close), but it is one of his biggest commercial successes along with being the movie that finally earned him long-overdue Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director. A remake of Andrew Lau and Alan Mak's Hong Kong cop thriller "Infernal Affairs," the film did big box office business because it delivered chesty performances from heavyweight thespians like Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, and Jack Nicholson while trafficking in the kind of viscerally charged violence that's been a staple of Scorsese's mob movies. This one felt like it was strictly for fun, and it is precisely that. If you happen to come across it on television, you're likely sticking with it until the bloody end.

Sza knows how to make an entrance. She had the world fiending so hard for her new Lana — first she announced the album drop for Friday at midnight, then kept everyone chewing our fingernails while she took an extra 15 hours to give it the right finishing touches. But it was worth it. Lana arrives just in time to tie a bow around the music year, just like her epochal blockbuster Sos did two Decembers ago. It’s officially part of the deluxe edition “reissue” of Sos, but it stands on its own,...

It’s almost Christmas O’ clock, which means it’s Home Alone time! While the sequels got progressively wilder and a bit chaotic, and honestly not as great after Macaulay Culkin grew out of the role, he still gave us two of the best Christmas movies ever made.

The IMDb top-250 is a curious portrait of populist taste. The list is, it's worth remembering, culled only from user ratings on the IMDb website, and, judging by the films on the list, the average IMDb user seems to be a college-age white male with a taste for crime, guns, fantasy, and the ultra-masculine. The top movies on the list all seem to be the types of movies that young men would own posters for, proudly displayed on their dorm room walls. There are many unassailable classics, to be sure, and young teens could easily look to the list as a rudimentary introduction to the world of cinema, but the list seems ... skewed. There's not a lot of variety. It's not curated by a single critic, nor even a panel of critics. It's just a general consensus of the taste of the types of people who like to rate movies on IMDb.

Macaulay Culkin has revealed Joe Pesci accidentally bit his finger during a rehearsal for 'Home Alone'.The 44-year-old actor – who played the cheeky Kevin McCallister in the 1990 festive film – said he and Joe, 81, were rehearsing a scene where thief Harry threatens the young boy, only for the 'Goodfellas' star to get carried away and bit down hard on his finger. At a Q+A session in Rosemont, Illinois, as a part of the actor's 'A Nostalgic Night With Macaulay Culkin' tour to celebrate the movie, he said: "He [Joe] was trying to scare me. He was like, 'I want to be menacing to this kid.'"After Joe accidentally chomped on his finger, Macaulay said his co-star "didn't react much" to the incident, and added the bite had actually left him with a scar.He added: "I have a scar. I saw his face — and I’ve never, ever seen Joe Pesci actually scared.

Pete Davidson recently claimed that he wants to be known to the public only for his good work. The comedian shot to fame in the early 2010s with his stand-up segments and guest appearances on shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Jimmy Kimmel Live. However, his big break came with his casting in Saturday Night Live in 2014, which he continued with for eight years before quitting in 2022.

Should you ever need to give your watchlist some extra oomph, you can't go wrong by referring to IMDb's Top 250 list, which includes some of the best movies that cinema has ever had to offer. The great thing about such a mammoth pile of films is that icons of Hollywood will be popping in more than one entry on the list. Of course, some stars have a greater presence on this compendium than others, and while it might not shock many as to who has the most entries, it's surprising to see who the runner-ups are.
Coming in at the number one spot with the most films in IMDb's Top 250 is the man many believe to be perhaps the best actor ever -- Robert De Niro. Having appeared in over 100 films, nine of De Niro's projects rank among the website's most beloved 250: "The Godfather Part II," "Goodfellas,...

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
The Bikeriders (Jeff Nichols)
Using photographer Danny Lyon’s iconic The Bikeriders’ imagery as a jumping-off point, Jeff Nichols’ latest feature imagines a fictionalized Chicago motorcycle club, the Vandals. Motorcycle club culture might be a distinctly American phenomenon, but Nichols casts two Brits in the lead, with varying returns: Jodie Comer as Kathy narrates the story in a clear Goodfellas conceit, adopting a Midwest accent flashy (and divisive) enough to ensure sustained awards-season chatter; Tom Hardy is Johnny, a truck driver who gets the idea to start a motorcycle club while watching Marlon Brando’s The Wild One. This low-stakes “why not?” starting point for founding the club works early in the film, until, following the Goodfellas trajectory, it all comes crashing down.

The 1992 comedy "My Cousin Vinny" is a perfect movie, but it could have been totally different — in that two Hollywood A-listers nearly played two of the main roles.
As the movie opens, New Yorkers and college students Bill Gambini and Stanley Rothenstein — played by Ralph Macchio and Mitchell Whitfield, respectively — accidentally steal a can of tuna from a convenience store called the Sac-o-Suds, and when the police corner them, they confess. What they don't know is that the clerk at the Sac-o-Suds was shot and killed right after they unwittingly shoplifted, so they end up confessing to the murder ... at which point Bill's cousin Vincent Laguardia Gambini (Joe Pesci), a newly-minted lawyer, comes to their rescue. According to an oral history of the movie in Rolling Stone, Macchio and Whitfield were not the first choices for Bill and Stanley; the roles were nearly played by Ben Stiller and Will Smith.

Oscar Isaac admits he may have been wrong. He didn’t initially understand the casting of his “Dune: Part Two” co-star Timothée Chalamet as the great folk icon Bob Dylan in director James Mangold’s upcoming musical biopic “A Complete Unknown.”
According to Isaac, Chalamet was telling him and their fellow “Dune” actors Josh Brolin and Stephen McKinley Henderson about the project on the set of the epic sci-fi sequel — and Isaac, a devoted Dylan fan, had raised his eyebrow about the whole thing. Set in New York in the early 1960s, “A Complete Unknown” chronicles the early life and times of Dylan who arrived in Greenwich Village an enigmatic, freewheelin’ 19-year-old from Minnesota and forever changed the folk community.
“My first thought was… sounds like a really bad idea. I mean, it’s Dylan. It’s the holy of holies for me. It just didn’t sound right,” Isaac...

If you haven't seen Coralie Fargeat's hyper-stylish body horror movie "The Substance," do yourself a favor and go inject this gorgeous neon gorefest directly into your eyeballs. Our review called it "bloody, brilliant" and "bonkers," but even if it doesn't totally work for you for whatever reason, this audacious flick about aging fitness model Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) features some of the best cinematography and performances of the year. Moore is vulnerable and relatable as Elisabeth, who uses an experimental new treatment to split the younger part of herself into a separate person, Sue (Margaret Qualley), really baring it all for audiences in a number of ways. Qualley is also fantastic (as always), a perfect example of energy and youth, mixed with all of the reckless abandon and self-centeredness youth can bring.

Jack Nicholson was the epitome of the New Hollywood movie star. He broke through via the cultural earthquake that was "Easy Rider," and quickly established himself as a guarantor of quality filmmaking thanks to his star turns in "Five Easy Pieces," "Carnal Knowledge" and "The Last Detail." As the revolutionary spirit of the New Hollywood movement faded, Nicholson found himself becoming more of a traditional leading man in more traditional films like "The Postman Always Rings Twice," "Terms of Endearment" and "Prizzi's Honor." He worked in spurts, taking breaks here and there, but he was never gone for long — which is why his 14-year absence from our screens (save for the occasional Los Angeles Lakers game appearance) feels so notable. And sad.
While we let Nicholson enjoy his retirement, we've no shortage of classics, near-classics, and assorted oddities to remind us how great he could be when he was at...

Musk recently shared his frustration with the AMC Network’s inclusion of a warning before the airing of Goodfellas.

Framed around a decade of drug trafficking and steroid-fueled scary guys who shook down drug dealers, the podcast paints a picture of a series of brutal murders of members of a hardcore bodybuilder gym. The gym was a front for crime, and one of its owners had mob ties, and the other was an ex-police officer once called the meanest cop in Florida, with a long string of arrests and allegations of police brutality. The HBO show lasted six seasons, with its finale being widely appreciated at the time. However, it also spawned a lot of questions about the fate of Tony Soprano.
While David Chase confirmed that Tony was indeed dead and the abrupt cut to black was to honor the iconic character, actress Lorraine Bracco seemed to have her own theory. The actress who played Dr. Jennifer Melfi, Tony’s therapist, reportedly hated the ending and criticized Chase for sealing the fate of the legendary character.

The Sopranos creator David Chase had a clear vision of what he wanted his characters to be. He was very strict about his storylines and the dialogue of the characters. However, he admitted that he once had to concede to the demand of an actor on the show. The demand came from Tony Sirico, who played Paul Gualtieri aka Paulie Walnuts, and Chase believed that Sirico’s demand was fair.

David Chase revealed that Sirico wanted to remove the word ‘bully’ from another actor’s line about his character. Chase revealed this rather sensitive side of Sirico in the wake of his passing in 2022. Sirico also had major roles in Goodfellas and several Woody Allen films including Mighty Aphrodite.

(Netflix)
He’s called back into action to lead an investigation after a cyberattack leaves thousands dead.
As head of the Zero Day Commission, Mullen must unravel a crisis steeped in disinformation, conspiracy, and power struggles.
But the stakes aren’t just political; they’re personal. Mullen’s relentless search for answers forces him to confront his own demons, risking his family, reputation, and legacy in the process.

After breaking ground with his 2021 movie “Casablanca Beats,” which marked the first Moroccan feature to vie for a Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, filmmaker Nabil Ayouch (“Much Loved”) is achieving a new milestone with his latest movie, “Everybody Loves Touda,” which premiered at Cannes Premiere and is now eligible in all categories at the Oscars. It’s the first Moroccan film to do so.
“Everybody Loves Touda,” penned by Ayouch and his wife, the actor-turned-filmmaker Maryam Touzani (“The Blue Caftan”), tells the story a young poetess and singer known as a Shaeirat (Nisrin Erradi), who raises her deaf-mute son in a small Moroccan village. Hoping to give her son a better future and more opportunities in life, she moves with him to Casablanca where she faces setbacks. At 86, Ridley Scott is on the cusp of releasing one of the biggest films of his career — “Gladiator II” — and already has at least two additional projects lined up for 2025, a reteam with Paul Mescal and a Bee Gees biopic. With no signs of slowing down.
He’s not the only Hollywood veteran who’s still making movies: Martin Scorsese, who turned 82 this year, made one of the best films of his career with “Killers of the Flower Moon” while Clint Eastwood (94) has what might be his final film, “Juror #2” in theaters now.

There are three ways to make your TV lead debut: the right way, the wrong way, and the way that Robert De Niro does it. And the way that Robert De Niro does it is by dominating the silver screen for half a century, winning two Oscars, and then taking on the role of a former United States president in an all-star prestige conspiracy thriller — naturally. Yes, the Taxi Driver star is set to play ex-potus George Mullen in Zero Day, an original Netflix series from Eric Newman (Griselda), Noah Oppenheim (Jackie), and Nyt writer Michael S. Schmidt which sees the acting heavyweight leading an investigation into a major cyber attack while dealing with his own demons. The show's stacked ensemble includes Angela Bassett, Jesse Plemons, Lizzy Caplan, Dan Stevens, and Connie Britton — and you can enjoy a first look at the show, courtesy of Netflix, in the pictures below:...

We know that Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather trilogy is considered to be the zenith of mafia films. There have been other great titles such as Goodfellas, One Upon a Time in America, Scarface or Heat, but The Godfather trilogy (especially the first two movies) is something else. It is, without a doubt, peak cinema.
This trilogy set the scene for the story of the Corleone family, and while it was inspired by the books by Mario Puzo, the franchise is considered to be a faithful and accurate depiction of the life in mafia families, as well as the world of mafia in general.
Now, we can confirm that a new mafia-themed movie is on its way and it is going to be titled Corleone. The movie will begin production next year and we can also confirm that it has found its director. If you’re curious about the movie,...

Known as the queen of Italian pop, Mina has sold over 150 million records worldwide and remains a music legend who’s been captivating fans since the ’60s. Her new album, Gassa d’Amante, drops on November 22, and its title — named after an essential sailing knot — represents the solid and yet easily untangled nature of love. Just like the knot, the album explores the twists and turns of love in all of its beauty and complexity. At 84, Mina is still going strong, and she’s as iconic as ever.
Mina, born Mina Anna Mazzini, is one of the most adored pop stars in Italy. She is a cult figure who can be compared to Liza Minelli and Bette Midler; a musical diva who is as great a superstar to the Italians as Lady Gaga or Taylor Swift today. This British-Australian actor came into the limelight with Curtis Hanson crime-thriller L.A Confidential where he played Detective Sergeant Edmund “Ed” Exley, an intelligent, ruthless, and morally ambitious fellow. While he was brilliant in the role, he was quietly overshadowed by the likes of Kevin Spacey & Russell Crowe. But his most widely known is Christopher Nolan’s psychological thriller Memento. Now a cult, Memento chronicled the life of Leonard who is vulnerable and confused because he cannot form new memories. After Memento, Pearce slowly subsided into the league of soul-less B-movies which didn’t do him any good. But after watching a few of his recent performances, I can ensure that Guy Pearce has still got it. He is one of the most underrated actors in the industry. Since 2002, two Hollywood heavyweights have had an illustrious — and productive — working relationship, and cinema as a whole is better off because of it. Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio have been working together for decades now, with DiCaprio playing essential roles in some of Scorsese's best modern films, and what makes their relationship all the more touching is that DiCaprio has publicly revealed that Scorsese's movie "Taxi Driver" served as a major inspiration for his own acting career. Before these two joined forces, it may have felt borderline impossible to imagine that they'd become one of the most tightly-knit Hollywood duos in cinematic history; while DiCaprio was getting his start in projects like "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" and "Titanic," Scorsese was already a directing legend thanks to "Taxi Driver" and other hits like "Mean Streets," "Raging Bull," "Goodfellas," "The Age of Innocence," and "Casino," just to name a few. While Martin Scorsese had fun exploring the criminal underbelly of New York City through the eyes of powerful men, Nicole Kidman always had the best female representation in her films. From Eyes Wide Shut to Dogville, every Kidman film has been about the complex layers that shroud a woman and the societal expectations she rallies against, whether as a witch (Practical Magic) or a submissive (Babygirl).

Martin Scorsese, on the other hand, has been busy celebrating the shades of grey where the men of crime operate in the seedy streets of Brooklyn, Vegas, or Manhattan. Renowned as one of the greatest directors of gangster films over the decades, it is rare for Scorsese to paint a picture where a female arc takes precedence over the male in his films.

Early on in Denzel Washington's brilliant career, he gave critics a preview of how he was going to play the movie star game going forward -- and they weren't pleased. In between making acclaimed dramas like "Cry Freedom," "Glory," and "Mississippi Masala," Washington cut loose and sought to build up some box office cred in formulaic action movies like "Heart Condition" and "Ricochet." Reviewers who viewed Washington as a major star in the making were disappointed with, if not aghast at, his choices. What a colossal waste of the man's time and talent, they reasoned, to run around in his boxer shorts after John Lithgow in full glazed ham mode. Then he'd go and make "Malcolm X," and everyone would hush up until a frivolity like "Virtuosity" dropped.
Washington had it right. If he wanted to ensure more movies like "Malcolm X" or "Philadelphia" got made further down the line,...

With Conan O’Brien named as the next Oscars host, we decided to post all opening songs by Billy Crystal, the best modern Oscars host.
Conan O’Brien is officially hosting the 97th Oscars next March. It’s a pretty solid choice by the Academy after a slew of slightly dull ceremonies.
Even if O’Brien absolutely nails the gig, it’s unlikely he’ll be anywhere near as good as the best host of the modern Oscars: Billy Crystal. Crystal hosted the ceremony a total of nine times and made it look easy, too. His opening monologues have become iconic, thanks to his quick wit and cracking songs.
Crystal hosted the Oscars for the first time in 1990 and opened the show with a joke about the previous year’s opening act. “Is it me or are you just glad I’m not Snow White?” Crystal joked, referencing the awful sketch...

Nicole Kidman has worked with a lot of commendable talents from the entertainment industry to become one of the most top-notch actresses in all of Hollywood. But while those big names include the likes of masterminds like Stanley Kubrick and Taylor Sheridan, among others, they don’t include one of the greatest filmmakers of all time: Martin Scorsese.

Nicole Kidman is subtly calling out Martin Scorsese for not making features that center on female characters.
The “Babygirl” actress and mega-producer told Vanity Fair that she would love to work with Scorsese, if the auteur “does a film with women.”
While Scorsese is best known for his more male-centric ensemble features like “Raging Bull,” “After Hours,” and “Goodfellas,” the director has famously collaborated with iconic actresses like Sharon Stone, Lorraine Bracco, Juliette Lewis, and Margot Robbie for acclaimed performances, not to mention Ellen Burstyn winning a Best Actress Academy Award for “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.”
In 2019, Scorsese’s “The Irishman” was criticized for only having Anna Paquin say seven words onscreen. Scorsese said at the time of the assumed lack of female characters in his films, “If the story doesn’t call for it… it’s a waste of everybody’s time.”

Hulu’s FX-produced limited series Say Nothing, like its source book by Patrick Radden Keefe, takes its name from the striking 1975 poem “Whatever You Say, Say Nothing,” by Seamus Heaney.
It’s a sad and angry piece that looks at the unfolding tragedy of the Troubles, critiquing simultaneously the culture of enforced silence that repressed free speech within Northern Ireland and the voyeuristic instincts of the outside media covering “the Irish thing.” The poem is dazzlingly focused on speech and storytelling, the power and limitations of words in contrast to what Heaney refers to as “Northern reticence, the tight gag of place / And times.”
Keefe’s mission, and the mission of Say Nothing creator Joshua Zetumer (RoboCop, the 2014 one), is to break through the silence. To use a different metaphor, it’s about the disinfecting power of sunlight. It’s also a chronicle of Northern Ireland reported on by...

34 years later, Ray Liotta's best movie is still often considered to be "Goodfellas," where he plays the amoral mob associate Henry Hill as his increasingly dark life of crime unfolds. It's likely the role Liotta will be best remembered for; as he once recalled in a Deadline interview, "'Goodfellas,' really, it's been like 28, 30 years later and I have kids coming up to me as if the movie had just come out. These kids who see it when they're old enough. That's just unbelievable."
Before Liotta was cast as Henry Hill, however, another actor nearly got the role: Alec Baldwin, who at that point had not yet starred in "Glengarry Glen Ross" but had starred in Tim Burton's "Beetlejuice." In a 2015 interview with Howard Stern, Baldwin explained how he had "went to Scorsese's apartment" to audition, didn't get the part, and later talked to Liotta about it at a party.

Filmmaker Tyler Taormina quickly fell in love with IFC Films’ idea for how to market his merry-and-bright feature. The indie distributor’s trailer for “Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point” plays as a full-on throwback to how holiday season comedies used to be advertised, complete with baby boomer doo-wop, a long list of grinning cast members and a warm narrator promising that, “It’s more than a holiday. It’s a gift for the whole family.” But the nostalgic packaging came with an unforeseen side effect.
“A lot of the people online are like, ‘Oh, I thought it was a horror movie.’ It was a very common reaction that was not at all thought of,” Taormina shares. “Earnest nostalgia is not able to be detected. The irony is expected. It bummed me out.”

If you've never seen "Goodfellas," it's probably best you stop what you're doing and watch Martin Scorsese's seminal mob flick now. The film is only one of the best mob movies you need to see immediately, and alongside "The Godfather" occupies a hallowed space within the genre. Luckily, for those that are somehow uninitiated, "Goodfellas" is now streaming over on Max, where it's managing to prove its worth as an undisputed classic all over again.
Based on the book "Wiseguy" by Nicholas Pileggi, who co-write "Goodfellas" with Scorsese, the film tells the story of Henry Hill, a Brooklyn kid whose dreams of joining the mob are fulfilled after Robert DeNiro's Jimmy Conway takes him under his wing. Spanning three decades, the movie is a sweeping look at the life of a gangster, depicting all the glamor that comes with it while also not shying away from the brutality...

However, sometimes, these methods of getting into character end up clashing with the methods of other actors. Spoilers ahead for the "Simpsons" season 36 episode "Desperately Seeking Lisa."
Since time immemorial, "The Simpsons" has done countless pop culture parodies. Its annual "Treehouse of Horror" episodes, in particular, have been responsible for spoofing famous horror movies like "The Shining," and "A Nightmare on Elm Street," as well as darker TV series such as the popular anime show "Death Note." Among the iconic animated sitcom's more frequent targets, however, is Martin Scorsese, the Oscar-winning filmmaker whose classics like "Goodfellas," "Taxi Driver," and "Raging Bull" alone have inspired multiple episodes of "The Simpsons."
Without a doubt, though, the show's best Scorsese sendup to date was the one based on his 1991 thriller "Cape Fear," which became the basis for one of the all time greatest episodes of "The Simpsons" — "Cape Feare." It's a classic installment that not only has the Simpson family terrorized by Sideshow Bob, but is also full of memorable slapstick gags.

It's a classic installment that not only has the Simpson family terrorized by Sideshow Bob, but is also full of memorable slapstick gags.
