Director Richard Benjamin worried about the claw-like fake nails Kim Basinger wore for the film: "The most horrifying call we could get was from her driver, saying that a nail broke on the way in."
The exterior shot of Ron's beach house was used in Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990) for Kelly and Donna's apartment.
Original writer Jerico Stone saw the story as a dark allegory about child abuse. That was how it was pitched to Paramount in 1981. They never wound up producing the film, which ended up at the hands of Weintraub Entertainment Group. Paramount would eventually gain the US TV rights to the film when it acquired Spelling Entertainment, the parent of previous TV rights-holders Worldvision Enterprises, in 1999.
