The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Kviff) on Monday added a David Lynch short and an episode of his iconic series Twin Peaks to its Franz Kafka retrospective and unveiled the program of its Out of the Past section, featuring classic, cult, rare and “unfairly overlooked” films, screened in their original or restored versions.
Among the highlights are restored versions of Wim Wenders’ 1984 neo-Western drama Paris, Texas and Two English Girls, François Truffaut’s 1971 period drama about a love triangle.
The Wenders film is part of a three-film program presented by Alexandre O. Philippe, the creator of documentary essays about the history of cinema, offering perspectives on the American landscape in cinema. He will also present his 2021 documentary The Taking (2021), which explores American mythology through the socio-philosophical dimensions of the American landscape.

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival has announced its first wave of program details for its upcoming 58th edition, which is set to take place from June 28 through July 6, 2024. The Czech festival, widely considered to be the most prestigious film festival in Eastern Europe, is set to honor one of the nation’s most famous writers with a new retrospective titled “Franz Kafka and the Cinema.”
The series is set to feature screenings of a wide range of films inspired by the Czech novelist, who famously wove themes of alienation and existential angst into cryptic novels that often flirted with surrealism. Some films, like Orson Welles’ “The Trial” are direct adaptations of Kafka’s writings; but the series also includes movies about Kafka’s life, and films like Martin Scorsese’s “After Hours” that were influenced by Kafka’s ideas.

The Karlovy Vary Festival will pay tribute to one of the Czech Republic’s most famous sons with a retrospective of film adaptations of the work of Franz Kafka from some of the greatest names in cinema. To mark the centenary of Kafka’s death, the festival will screen a series of films directly adapted from, or inspired by, the literary master of angst.
The retrospective will include such classics as Orson Welles’s The Trial (1962), Martin Scorsese’s Kafkaesque New York dramedy After Hours (1985) and Federico Fellini’s Intervista; Steven Soderbergh’s Kafka (1991) and its 2021 re-edit Mr. Kneff — both starring Jeremy Irons as a set-upon insurance man and writer — alongside lesser-known adaptations, including Jan Němec’s Metamorphosis, a German TV movie version of Kafka’s famous short story. Other highlights include Ousmane Sembene’s Senegalese feature The Money Order (1968) and Kôji Yamamura’s animated short Franz Kafka’s a Country Doctor (2007).

In the new documentary series “The Andy Warhol Diaries,” the late pop artist’s re-created voice sounds eerie and uncanny — human but not. It’s aesthetically jarring, and a fitting tribute.
Director Andrew Rossi, with the permission of Warhol’s estate, used an artificial-intelligence program to reproduce his speaking voice, so that “Warhol” can read aloud from the diaries he kept. The result is a flat, almost robotic recapitulation of observations and events, narrating a vivid stream of footage from his life and career without emotion or intonation. “The Andy Warhol Diaries,” executive produced by Ryan Murphy, builds, over six well-structured episodes, a sense of its subject as intelligent, but alienated from his feelings and even from his own talent.
Warhol reigned in a 1970s and ’80s milieu in which all kinds of personalities rubbed up against each other and the divisions between high and low culture were collapsing. His...

Interview with the Vampire, author Anne Rice’s first volume in her Vampire Chronicles, had been among my favorite novels since I first read it in 1977 (I’ve read it many times since). It was imaginative in its construction and narrative voice — the worst that could be said was that it spawned a legion of mediocre vampire volumes (and movies and TV series) that couldn’t match its originality and depth, and those imitators persist to this day — but what I liked best about it was that it was a painful read.

Miley Cyrus has found her true voice—and wants the world to know it. On Wednesday, Oct. 20, Interview magazine published its cover story: an interview Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich conducted with the 28-year-old musician. Cyrus, who has covered the metal band's 1992 hit single "Nothing Else Matters," talked to the fellow musician about the criticism she's received over her singing voice, which has changed over the past year. "My whole life, whether in vocal training or just continuing to hone my craft, it's always been about, 'Why do you sound like a man? Where's your f--king falsetto, bitch? Why can't you sing the high octave of 'Party in the U.S.A.'...

Lourdes "Lola" Leon wants you to know that she's way more than just Madonna's daughter. In a recent candid chat with Debi Mazar for Interview magazine, the 25-year-old model explained how her upbringing changed her perception of money and beauty, and not in the way that you would think. For one, she paid for her college tuition and her New York City apartment on her own, explaining that she didn't get "handouts" because Madonna was cautious about her children becoming entitled. Lola also wasn't open to accepting money from Madonna, whom she described as a "control freak." However, she's not oblivious about her position in society, either. "Obviously, I grew up with extreme privilege. There's no denying that," she said.
Now, as she moves into a space of her own success, Lola said her mom "is very insistent on making me think about what I want to be known for beyond my looks,...

AMC has opened writers’ rooms for three new series under their script-to-series model, including one based on the Anne Rice novel series “Lives of the Mayfair Witches.”
The potential series would focus on an intuitive young neurosurgeon who discovers that she is the unlikely heir to a family of witches. As she grapples with her newfound powers, she must contend with a sinister presence that has haunted her family for generations.
Esta Spaulding and Michelle Ashford are both writers and executive producers on the series. Spaulding, who has an overall deal with AMC Studios, would serve as showrunner if the series was greenlit. This is the second series based on one of Rice’s books to officially go into development at AMC. The cabler previously greenlit a series based on “Interview With the Vampire,” with Sam Reid recently being cast in the lead role of Lestat.

Sam Reid will play the vampire Lestat in AMC’s “Interview With the Vampire,” which is based on Ann Rice’s popular novels.
Last year, AMC acquired the rights to Rice’s bestselling “Vampire Chronicles” and “Lives of the Mayfair Witches” book series, giving the network access to develop film and television projects from any of the 18 titles under both best-selling series.
The series will be available on both AMC and AMC+.
The author and her son Christopher Rice will serve as executive producers on all series and films under their deal with AMC, which gives the network and its external partners comprehensive rights to develop projects using Rice’s intellectual property.
The Rices have been trying to develop a series based on “The Vampire Chronicles” for years. In July 2018 there was a project set up at Hulu that did not move forward.
Rolin Jones will serve as creator, showrunner and executive producer of “Interview.

Reese Witherspoon joined Tracee Ellis Ross for a conversation in the latest Interview magazine (via Insider) and revealed she suffered three weeks of panic attacks leading into the production of “Wild.” Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and based on Cheryl Strayed’s memoir, the film casts Witherspoon as a broken woman who pieces her life together by hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. Witherspoon earned acclaim for her performance and Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globes, Critics Choice, and Screen Actors Guild nominations for Best Actress.
“I was so scared to do that,” Witherspoon said when naming “Wild” the biggest acting challenge of her career. “I had hypnosis, I was so scared. It seems odd to call Anthony Hopkins’ Best Actor victory at the 2021 Oscars a surprise, but his triumph Sunday might have been the night’s biggest upset. A Best Actor trophy for Chadwick Boseman’s electric performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom seemed a foregone conclusion after Boseman, who died tragically last year at 43, won at the Critics Choice Awards, SAG and the Golden Globes Awards.
But Deadline’s own Pete Hammond hinted at a potential a late surge for Hopkins, and that seems to be what happened.
The legendary Welsh actor was a no-show for the ceremony, as he was last year when nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Two Popes. He did not attend the BAFTAs this year either, where he also won Best Actor.
In 2012, Hopkins, whose film Hitchcock was getting Oscar buzz, told the Huffington Post he was not interested in the awards circuit.

When Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's tell-all with Oprah Winfrey was first announced in February, people immediately started making comparisons to Princess Diana's famous November 1995 interview with Martin Bashir following her separation from Prince Charles. But the similarities became even more striking when it aired on March 7 and Diana's interview was featured on Netflix's Diana: The Interview That Shook the World on April 11. In addition to the matching bold eyeliner looks and Meghan wearing one of Diana's bracelets, both Meghan and Diana had similar revelations about their time as royals and how the intense pressure from the palace and British press affected their mental health. Even though it's been nearly 26 years since Diana's interview, it's alarming to see that not much has changed since then. Hopefully, Harry and Meghan's tell-all serves as a wake-up call for both the palace and the British media.

The Eric Andre persona is best understood by his popular late-night Adult Swim series, succinctly titled The Eric Andre Show. In every episode Andre’s irreverent and self-destructive behavior leads him to trash his set, causing bodily harm, and torturing a slew of celebrities that range from Jimmy Kimmel to the Real Housewives of Atlanta. Andre is the equivalent of a magic mushrooms trip: wildly confusing, incoherent, sometimes causing one to burst at the seams with ecstatic comedic moments. Andre’s energy finds the perfect vessel in Bad Trip, his first starring role with a script he wrote with frequent collaborator and director Kitao Sakurai.

Craig “Mums” Grant, an actor and poet who appeared in all six seasons of HBO’s prison drama Oz among dozens of film, TV and stage credits, died Thursday, apparently of natural causes, according to his representatives. He was 52.
Billed as muMs da Schemer, the name he used during his early slam-poetry years, Grant guested or recurred as Arnold “Poet” Jackson on Oz during its entire 1997-2003 run, appearing in all but seven episodes. His character was a heroin addict who is released from “Emerald City,” only to return after killing a drug dealer. A member of the Homeboys prison gang, the character often recited poems about social and political injustice endured by Black Americans.
Born and raised in New York City, Grant competed in at the 1996 National Poetry Slam as a member of the Nuyorican team and was featured in the 1998 feature documentary Slam Nation: The Sport of Spoken Word.

Kaley Cuoco has shut down rumors suggesting she and Margot Robbie are feuding over their rival Harley Quinn projects.
The 'Big Bang Theory' star has been reportedly rumored to dislike the 'Suicide Squad' actress for a long time over the fact that they both play the DC Comics anti-heroine.
Cuoco, 35, is known for voicing Harley Quinn in the popular DC Comics animated series of the same name, while Robbie, 30, played the iconic character in 'Suicide Squad' and this year's 'Birds of Prey'.
Rumors began swirling about the possible feud between the two actresses after the pair reportedly refused to share the stage together at Comic-Con in San Diego, California, while promoting their individual Harley Quinn projects.
But Kaley Cuoco has denied these rumors during a recent conversation with David Spade for Interview magazine that was published Monday adding she has never even met Robbie.

Lorde has 20 million followers on social media, but for the past two years, she hasn't delighted fans with a single post. While notoriously private, the 24-year-old singer used to be active on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, but in May 2018, she deleted most posts and stopped sharing content. In a new interview with her friend, Cazzie David for Interview magazine, she opened up about her decision to leave the platforms. "Part of what made me peace out on social media," she told Larry David's daughter, "apart from feeling like I was losing my free will, was the massive amounts of stress I was feeling about our planet, about systemic racism, and about police...

A version of this story about Mimi Leder first appeared in the Emmy Hot List issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
Decades ago, Mimi Leder broke ground for female directors when Paramount hired her to direct the big-budget disaster movie “Deep Impact,” executive produced by Steven Spielberg.
But she’s spent most of her time working in television, landing nominations for directing “China Beach,” “ER” and “The West Wing” and also establishing a relationship with former HBO executive Michael Ellenberg, who pitched her over dinner on his new Apple TV+ series “The Morning Show,” set on a network’s daily morning program.
“I was a huge fan of ‘Network’ and ‘Broadcast News’ and ‘The Larry Sanders Show,’ always fascinated by what that world looked like when you pulled the curtain back,” she said. “I’d never signed on to a show without a script, but I signed on to the show right then and there.

“I directed the pilot and the second episode, but I felt the show really grew … as the characters were reaching this crescendo,” explains “The Morning Show” director Mimi Leder about the first season finale, “The Interview,” for which she’s an Emmy nominee for Best Drama Directing. “It felt like it was an episode that truly represented what the show was about.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Leder above.
The Apple TV+ drama explores the inner workings of the title news program, which is thrown into turmoil after its anchor Mitch Kessler (Best Drama Actor nominee Steve Carell) is fired for sexual misconduct. “How these morning shows look, they’re very bright, they’re very warm, they’re very inviting,” she says. But the tension that goes into making them tells a different story, so “we wanted to create the feeling of great complexity behind the scenes because these characters were very flawed.

HBO Max has acquired worldwide rights to An American Pickle, which will be released under the upcoming platform’s Warner Max label.
The film, starring Seth Rogen in dual leading roles, is an adaptation of the 2013 New Yorker series Sell Out by Simon Rich who also adapts, and is directed by Brandon Trost, the cinematographer from Rogen’s previous films. Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver are producers for Point Grey. Executive producers are Rich, Point Grey’s Alex McAtee and Ted Gidlow.
HBO Max acquired the film from Sony Pictures so that it would not be delayed due to Covid-19 theater closures and will now reach audiences this year via the new streaming platform.
The film is based on Rich’s New Yorker novella and stars Rogen as Herschel Greenbaum, a struggling laborer who immigrates to America in 1920 with dreams of building a better life for his beloved family.

Eminem's unexpected Oscars performance wasn't his only surprise on Sunday night. After the rapper shocked celebrities with a live rendition of his 2003 track "Lose Yourself," he reunited with longtime friend Elton John backstage and sent "Uncle Elton" some well-wishes on Instagram. "I got to see my Uncle Elton tonight at the Oscars," Eminem captioned their photo. "Congrats on your win too, Sir," he added, referencing Elton's award for best original song.
Elton and Eminem's friendship started in 2001 when the musicians performed "Stan" together at the Grammys. Since then, Eminem has credited Elton with helping him get sober nearly 12 years ago, and in 2017, the old pals opened up about their bond for Interview magazine.

Universal and Blumhouse's controversial thriller, The Hunt, is back on the release schedule after being pulled last summer.
The Hunt was, at one point, in danger of going the way of The Interview. Just as Sony once delayed (and eventually canceled) its controversial North Korea comedy, Universal ended up delaying its own controversial thriller. However, it now appears that The Hunt will fare better than that film.
Back in August, Universal Pictures pulled the Damon Lindelof and Blumhouse-produced The Hunt from its original September 27, 2019 release date. The move came on the heels of two mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio, and also some vague political posturing from the President. Yet, with things having seemingly settled in the news cycle some six months later, the film has managed to avoid its speculated fate of being sent to On Demand purgatory, and is now...

This is how a trip to Cannes begins: You get on a massive airliner from JFK to Nice, a red-eye flight on which dozens of the film industry’s most powerful people slingshot over the ocean while watching “Bridget Jones’ Baby” in monastic silence. When you land, touching down on a thin strip of concrete that juts out of a twinkling azure sea, the airport is so quiet and empty that you fear you’ve arrived a week too early by mistake.
Then you leave baggage claim and all hell breaks loose.
A Beautiful World
Stepping through the sliding doors and onto French soil, you’re immediately confronted by a human funnel of paparazzi, a hundred cameramen crawling over each other for a better look at who’s just arrived — it’s like if Fellini had directed “World War Z.” And yet, for all of the competition and clamor, the...

Within its first half hour, “Ismael’s Ghosts” weaves together espionage, melodrama, supernatural hauntings, and a filmmaker’s creative crisis. It’s the most ambitious movie to date from French director Arnaud Desplechin, whose ensemble dramas “A Christmas Tale” and “My Golden Years” also dealt with characters coping with their troubled pasts. This time, it’s a wild hodgepodge of genres that often risk collapsing on top of each other. At its best, the movie is a freewheeling gambit, hurtling in multiple directions at once, and it’s thrilling to watch Desplechin try juggle them all.
“Ismael’s Ghosts” within the confines of a movie imagined by its main character: a dense, labyrinthine spy story involving the experiences of young recruit Ivan (Louie Garrel) who’s services straight out of school. Minutes into that setup, Desplechin pulls out to reveal the world of disheveled writer-director Ismael (Mathieu Amalric), a rugged,...

Jasper is tall, extremely easygoing, and has the style of a Williamsburg creative. While Mike Mills may not have been the most prolific filmmaker since adapting Walter Kirn’s Thumbsucker for his first feature in 2005, his ability to get great performances out of his casts is undeniable, especially after Christopher Plummer won an Oscar for his role in Mills’ Beginners in 2010.
Mills’ new film 20th Century Women comes from a similarly personal place as Beginners, as it follows the coming-of-age of 15-year-old Jamie (newcomer Lucas Jade Zumann), living in a house in California with his overprotective single mother (Annette Bening), and two boarders, Abbey and William, played by Greta Gerwig and Billy Crudup, in 1979. At the behest of his mother, Abbey and Jamie’s best friend Julie (Elle Fanning) are coerced into helping Jamie learn what it’s like to be a man that’s sympathetic towards women.
