Jackie Chan is a martial arts movie star of many talents, not the least of which being his ability to perform some jaw-dropping kicks. A venerated name essentially synonymous with martial arts filmmaking, Jackie Chan has put some truly incredible feats of athleticism to screen in his many fight scenes over the years. Thought perhaps not as well-known as the likes of Jean-Claude Van Damme's kicks, Jackie Chan's footwork is still the stuff of legend, with some of his kicks needing to be seen to be believed.

In truth, Jackie Chan's fighting style is better known for its trickery, agility, and ability to make a weapon out of any ordinary household object he happens to find lying around. But it's worth mentioning that Chan's amazing acrobatics, flexibility, and raw pain tolerance has allowed him to pull of a wide variety of gravity-defying kicks, turning his legs into deadly weapons.

The 1980s marked a golden era for kung fu movies with iconic actors like Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung redefining the genre. Female action stars like Cynthia Khan challenged gender stereotypes in films like In The Line Of Duty III, showcasing power and skill. From legendary films like Police Story to the classic Wheels On Meals, the 1980s produced a diverse array of kung fu movies that continue to inspire.

Every decade has seen the emergence of remarkable kung fu movies, and the 1980s stand out as a treasure trove of some of the genre's finest. Deadline reports a new sports documentary is being planned for kickboxing champion and martial arts movie star Benny “The Jet” Urquidez. The names associated with the production almost seems like a bingo announcer called out randomly drawn names from my favorite childhood movies. Keanu Reeves, who himself is no stranger to the martial arts world and action genre, has partnered with Fisher Stevens, who is known for projects like Short Circuit 1 & 2 and Hackers, to produce the documentary on Urquidez, whom I’ve talked about before on my Dragons Forever retrospective.

The documentary, which is titled The Jet, is currently in production with the Emmy-nominated sports documentary editor turned filmmaker, Jennifer Tiexiera, directing the film. Tiexiera has most recently also directed a three-part series for HBO called Unveiled: Surviving La Luz del Mundo, which has also recently been nominated for an Emmy in the catagory of Outstanding Crime and Justice Documentary.

The Three Dragons, Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, and Yuen Biao, revolutionized the kung fu genre with their unique blend of talents and deep friendship. Their joint film ventures created some of the most famous on-screen fight sequences and cemented their status as iconic figures of martial arts cinema. While their films, such as "My Lucky Stars" and "Wheels on Meals," feature impressive action sequences and martial arts prowess, some of the humor feels dated and offensive, particularly towards female characters.

Fight scenes in movies are a serious, carefully managed undertaking, especially when they're shot in a way that doesn't allow for the actors to rely on stunt people. Filmmakers obviously value authenticity, but they also don't want their onscreen talent getting injured to such a degree that they wind up in a hospital, thus delaying the completion of the movie and, likely, jacking up the budget. This gets tricky when you're working with actors who want to prove their physical mettle and perhaps outshine their co-star. And when this competition is baked into the drama, well, there's a potential for things to go a little haywire.

There are extreme examples like Jackie Chan and Benny "The Jet" Urquidez's all-out brawls in "Wheels on Meal" and "Dragons Forever," but these men are trained combatants. It's a little different when, say, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo hit the mat in Bennett Miller's depressing true-crime drama "Foxcatcher.

One of Jackie Chan’s action masterpieces is 1983’s Project A. The film brought Chan together with his brothers from the China Drama Academy, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao. Project A features Chan’s signature action with the famous set pieces that have been inspired by such classic silent-era performers as Harold Lloyd and Charlie Chaplin. Now, the home video distribution company 88 Films, which has released remastered Chan movies like Dragons Forever and the Police Story movies, will now be releasing Project A and Project A – Part II on 4K Blu-ray. Blu-ray.com has announced that the set will be available on April 23, 2024.

Jackie Chan is about to get a major new collection from Criterion, with the prestige label announcing a new set called Jackie Chan: Emergence of a Superstar. The set will contain a few of Chan’s early classics, including Fearless Hyena (and its sequel) and The Young Master, as well as a later film, My Lucky Stars, and a pair of his earliest vehicles, Half a Loaf of Kung Fu and Spiritual Kung Fu. Jackie Chan could have starred in two more Three Dragons movies, but these plans never came to fruition. Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, and Yuen Biao were a trio of martial arts actors who made a string of movies together during the 1980s. Over time, they became known as the Three Dragons.

Trained in kung fu by the same martial arts master, the three actors have a storied friendship that dates back to their childhood. After all three transitioned into acting, they began working together and were eventually able to headline movies, with the three actors typically playing the protagonists. Some of their films, including Wheels on Meals and Jackie Chan's Project A, evolved into beloved kung fu classics, making them arguably one of the most popular acting teams in the martial arts movie genre. However, their partnership didn’t last long. The last Three Dragons movie was 1988’s Dragons Forever.

Several well-known martial arts stars have gone up against Bruce Lee in his movies. In spite of the actor completing only four martial arts movies, Lee is responsible for a long list of memorable movie fight scenes. Most are known just for Lee’s part in them, but a few also feature other famous kung fu movie actors.

Like so many other early entries in the kung fu movie genre, Lee’s films weren’t heavy on actors with martial arts experience. In movies like Enter the Dragon and Game of Death, he hired fellow martial artists like Bob Wall and Dan Inosanto to appear in his movies as his opponents, but the main roles were filled by key studio players, rather than high-profile martial arts stars. That’s not altogether surprising, though, considering that the genre was still young in the early 1970s when Lee’s movies were released.

Jackie Chan utilized a great American sitcom gimmick as a tool to propel his career. Growing up in the Peking Opera Academy, Jackie Chan would begin his career in movies as a stuntman, even having his neck memorably broken by Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon. With his back-to-back hits of Snake in the Eagle's Shadow and Drunken Master in 1978, Jackie Chan became Hong Kong's biggest star in the ensuing years and gradually made himself into a household name worldwide.

Despite some early struggles in breaking into the Hollywood industry, Chan eventually succeeded in doing so with the 1996 release of Rumble in the Bronx, followed by Jackie Chan's 1998 mega-hit Rush Hour. Spike Lee will participate in a live conversation about his 1989 film, Do the Right Thing, on Thursday at 8 p.m. Et. The discussion will stream on American Film Institute (AFI) Movie Club’s YouTube channel.

American Fiim Institute in partnership with Universal Pictures selected Lee’s film as its movie of the week, a fitting choice for the times as the movie addresses themes of racial injustice and inequality, and police brutality. Filmmaker Spike Lee on Sunday debuted a new short film, 3 Brothers – Radio Raheem, Eric Garner And George Floyd, a compilation of the scene from his 1989 film Do The Right Thing featuring the death of Radio Raheem (played by the late Bill Nunn) and video of the deaths of Eric Garner in 2014 and George Floyd earlier this week. The fictional character of Radio Raheem as well as Garner and Floyd are three Black men who all died in similar circumstances — being restrained by a white police officer(s) on the street.
