In the late 1960s and early 1970s, legendary film critic Pauline Kael grouped together a new generation of filmmakers by calling them The Movie Brats. Her grouping of young and influential filmmakers like Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola and Brian De Palma would come to define the shift in the movie-making sensibilities of Hollywood and herald the birth of the modern blockbuster with movies like Jaws and The Godfather.
One of the most impactful directors of the Movie Brats generation, Martin Scorsese, has been making complicated and entertaining films for more than 50 years. Many of his movies are considered the best of all time, and his most flawless movies are the ones that are able to beautifully and tragically capture the darkest sides of the human condition.

It is difficult to imagine that the guy who brought a smile to a million faces was going through a tough time when the world was laughing. The entire world was shocked when the docuseries Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV first aired.
For Drake Bell, the decision to come out with the story of how he was s*xually abused as a child actor wasn’t easy. And he wouldn’t have been able to do that had it not been for Josh Peck.

Anyone who knows Western cinema knows the history of the popular cinema genre and its evolution over the last hundred or so years. What's most fascinating about the genre is how it has affected audiences and audience appeal throughout the different eras of cinema. It seems there are multiple watershed films that either flip the script on the entire genre, pushing it in a different direction, or stand on their own as staples of the genre at any given time. From the classical era that influenced all Westerns to the stylized Italian "Spaghetti Westerns" and the contemporary revisionist Westerns, the genre has a plethora of important films to experience. Although they are not made as often in modern cinema, Westerns remain an important cultural cornerstone of cinematic storytelling.
Occasionally, a Western will come along that cements its place among the best in the genre, because the film knows exactly how...

No one looks at Victor Creed, a.k.a. Sabretooth, and thinks of him as someone who falls in love. He’s had brief relationships before (with Mystique being among them). Nevertheless, Creed isn’t a romantic. He’s too busy murdering people and making money to start the process and stay in a relationship. But if any writer could do it and make it believable, it’s Frank Tieri.
Frank Tieri is a veteran comic book writer who’s written multiple Weapon X alumni like Wolverine and Deadpool. He’s even written an actual Weapon X series - all of which Sabretooth appeared in. That’s why it wasn’t shocking when Marvel announced Sabretooth: The Dead Don’t Talk with him as the writer. Tieri understands the character better than most. Among those paying tribute to the actor was his longtime friend and Star Trek co-star and director, Jonathan Frakes.
During his time on Star Trek, especially during his DS9 era with the franchise, Meaney took time off to appear in a wide range of features in America and abroad. His seemingly endless list of credits, which saw him portray good guys and bad guys, and tackle both supporting roles and leads, includes The Dead, Die Hard 2, The Commitments, Under Siege, The Last of the Mohicans, Con Air, The Van, Hell on Wheels (in which he co-starred with future Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' lead Anson Mount), Tolkien, Gangs of London,...

The Dead Thing
Behind every film are a mass of filmmakers turning a script, maybe even a dream of an individual or handful of people, into reality. Elric Kane's The Dead Thing and Joshua Erkman's A Desert are distinctly different films. The Dead Thing follows a young woman, in a mesmerising performance from Blu Hunt, who begins a passionate affair with a man who hides a secret. In A Desert, Harold (David Yow), a private investigator, is hired by a distraught wife (Sarah Lind) to find her husband, Alex (Kai Lennox), who has disappeared while on a photography trip in California's Yucca Valley.
Rosencrans' previous credits include Dalila Droege's 2022 thriller No More Time, about a couple seeking sanctuary in a remote mountain town from a virus that turns people into murderers, and the 2020 documentary Feather And Pine, about the effects of The Great Recession on a logging community in.

Plot: Ingrid and Martha were close friends in their youth, when they worked together at the same magazine. Ingrid went on to become an autofiction novelist while Martha became a war reporter. Eventually, they were separated by the circumstances of life. After years of being out of touch, they meet again in an extreme but strangely sweet situation.
Review: The films of prolific director Pedro Almodovar are something of an acquired taste. The Spanish filmmaker is known for imbuing his female-centric stories with melodramatic dialogue and a sense of humor that is as bold as the visuals on screen. For his first feature-length project performed entirely in English, Almodovar cast two of the most talented actors working today, Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, to portray friends reunited after years apart under very difficult circumstances. Leaning heavily into his signature melodrama, Almodovar guides the viewer through a beautifully shot tale of...

Before his career truly took off, Leonardo DiCaprio was in one of the most underrated Westerns of all time, mostly due to one of his co-stars paying for his wages. Leonardo DiCaprio's filmography is incredibly strong, abd despite being pegged as a youthful heartthrob early in his career, some of DiCaprio's best films also rank among the best of the modern era. Still, there was a time when he was still trying to find his footing in a number of roles, even after his lauded performance in 1993's What's Eating Gilbert Grape.
Prior to the megastardom afforded by the likes of both Romeo + Juliet and Titanic, DiCaprio was cast in a Sam Raimi-directed Western film, which would end up getting lost among his major films both before and after. And his involvement only happened because one of his co-stars saw enough potential in him, years ahead of his break,...

The Godfather Part III, the final chapter in Francis Ford Coppola’s epic Godfather trilogy, was given a wide theatrical release on December 25, 1990 – and as far as director Luca Guadagnino is concerned, that release date was the perfect choice for the film, as it happens to be his go-to choice for Christmas viewing.
When IndieWire asked Guadagnino what he likes to watch over the holidays, he replied, “[The Godfather Part III] is the best of the three for me. Part II is too perfect and The Godfather is too legendary. But Part III has the ambition of a man who did everything and the fragility of the man who is going toward this older part of his work and his life. And it’s full of this longing melancholy. One of the most panned movies in the repertoire of the late, great Robin Williams has now been given a new appraisal by Academy Award nominee and Challengers director Luca Guadagnino. In an interview with Sight and Sound, the filmmaker jumped to the defense of Williams and director Francis Ford Coppola’s 1996 coming-of-age comedy-drama, Jack, which finds Williams playing a young boy who, due to a rare genetic condition, looks like a man in his mid-40s.
Perfectly suited to Williams’ unstoppable, infectious energy, and despite a performance that is equal parts heartwarming and heartbreaking, Jack was savaged by critics upon release. The movie stands at just 17% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, with legendary film critic Rogert Ebert awarding Jack just 1 and a half stars and asking “Who was this movie made for?” Guadagnino, however, declares that Jack is nothing less than a masterpiece.

Broadcast News (1987)
Once we reached the late 80s young Nathaniel was fully immersed in Oscar passions so there are less glaring omissions in films screened. Why am I talking about myself in the third person? Nevertheless 1987 is now so long ago that I really wonder about my initial take on so many of the movies. For instance, a lot of people I respect think very highly of The Dead – and it even gets a very loving homage in Almodovar’s current film The Room Next Door. I remember it as a high minded, intermittently potent drama but also kind of dull. It’s probable I was too young for it at the time (I did see it in theaters…and went specifically because Anjelica Huston had won the Oscar the previous year for 1985’s Prizzi’s Honor so I was in the flushes of new fandom). But we’re jumping ahead of ourselves.

Director Sam Raimi has directed some truly iconic movies, yet his Western, The Quick and the Dead, is one of his most underrated films of all time, despite poor reviews. Raimi's rise to fame began back in 1981 when he directed the cult classic horror movie, The Evil Dead. From there, the director took on various different genres, from crime thrillers to fantasies. Notably, he helmed the much-loved Spider-Man movies from 2002 to 2007. Yet, one Raimi movie that is often overlooked, and is only now getting the attention it deserves, is his 1995 Western.
The Quick and the Dead is the seventh movie Raimi directed in his career, and is his only Western to date. The movie includes an incredibly star-studded cast, including Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe, Leonardo DiCaprio, and more. The latest episode of Dandadan had fans sobbing by the end. The story of the Acrobatic Silky and her young daughter was unspeakably tragic. Unfortunately, the gravitas of the Silkys redemptive ending was quickly ruined by the catchy and goofy ending song. The song is great on its own, but its presence at the end of Episode 7 was a hindrance to the story viewers just saw.
Dandadan is not the only anime to do this. Plenty of other anime have ending songs that dont match particular episodes - or even the genre of the show audiences are watching. Many fans have complained about upbeat ending songs tarnishing somber or terrifying moments.

Since George A. Romero turned zombies into one of the most iconic and successful corners of the horror genre with Night of the Living Dead, the undead has been a commercial success for filmmakers. Ranging from comedies to disturbing post-apocalyptic horror dramas, the sub-genre remains one of the most popular and versatile in the industry. The 2000s stands out as one of the best decades for fans of zombie movies, delivering movies that raised the bar for the walking dead.
Zombie movies may not be as popular as at their peak, but Hollywood has continued to take cues from what worked during the '00s. As a decade that helped redefine zombies, paving the way for hit shows like The Walking Dead, audiences are spoiled for choice. From videogame adaptations to fresh new takes on life after the apocalypse, these remain some of the most popular movies of the decade.

Beginning with his 1968 creation of Night of the Living Dead, George Romero is renowned as the creator of the modern zombie. Romero is responsible for introducing the idea of zombies as stumbling, flesh-eating undead who seek to eat and destroy the living. Before this, zombies existed within the context of voodoo but not in mass media. His works created many spin-offs and sequels, with Romero's zombie films inspiring and influencing countless others in the zombie and horror genre. However, Romero officially created six films, with a seventh, Twilight of the Living Dead, being an upcoming posthumous production.
Within these six films, the timeline has jumped around, with some of the sequels taking place shortly after the original but set in a different time period. The movies were created over a 41-year time frame, with many reflecting the era and technology available at the time of their creation. The films all...

1792 was a turbulent time in Paris. As the French Revolution raged outside the dilapidated walls of the Tour du Temple, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette faced an uncertain future behind those walls. Once the most powerful monarchs in Europe, ruling over the opulent court at Versailles, they had been deposed and cast into an isolated prison to await their fate.
Director Gianluca Jodice’s historical drama “The Flood” shines a light on this difficult period in the lives of the hapless royal couple. Focusing on their imprisonment in the dreary Tower ahead of their executions, the film is based on accounts from the journal of Louis’ valet, Jean-Baptiste Cléry, played in the film by Fabrizio Rongione.
Gone are the lavish parties and designer dresses of Versailles. In their dank cell in the Tower, Louis (Guillaume Canet) and Marie Antoinette (Mélanie Laurent) struggle to adjust to their new circumstances with dignity.

In life and in cinema, Pedro Almodóvar likes to talk about death. When people aren’t losing their faculties in his films––like going blind (Folle… folle… fólleme Tim!), falling into comas (Talk to Her), or falling apart altogether (The Skin I Live In)––they dwell on the afterlife or are already there (Volver), though never is it a cause for undue solemnity. Speaking in a New Yorker profile in 2016, the director recalled watching the local woman in his hometown of Calzada chatting as they tended to their families’ graves. “Death disappeared,” Almodóvar explained, “because the important thing was the flowers, the conversations.”
That sentiment is alive and well in the director’s latest death film. His first-ever English-language feature, adapted from Sigrid Nunez’s novel What Are You Going Through mostly in structure only, The Room Next Door stars Tilda Swinton as the terminally ill named Martha who decides...

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2024 Venice Film Festival. Sony Pictures Classics releases “The Room Next Door” in select theaters on December 20.
Elegant and confounding in equivalent measure, Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language feature could’ve used a finishing touch from an American script supervisor. Adapted from Sigrid Nunez’s novel “What Are You Going Through” — and the second mounting of a Nunez book this fall season alongside David Siegel and Scott McGehee’s “The Friend” — “The Room Next Door” is mannered in a way that doesn’t feel purposeful, stilted and stiff where it should be sumptuous, and aches of the feeling that the Spanish auteur passed his sensibility, and his script, through a direct-to-English transferal that lacks the nuances that, say, a bilingual literary translator would bring to a text brought from Europe to the United States. Very few filmmakers have the distinction of creating a classic on their first effort. But John Huston, one of the greatest screenwriters and directors of the 20th century, did just that in 1941 with “The Maltese Falcon” and went on to create many classics by inventing, reinventing and reinvigorating genres.
Huston was born on August 5, 1906, in Nevada, Missouri. His father was the great actor Walter Huston, and young John developed an interest in the stage at a young age watching his father perform in vaudeville. He was a sickly child with an enlarged heart and kidney ailments but eventually overcame that to drop out of school at the age of 14 to become a professional boxer.
As a young adult, Huston wrote and sold several short stories, and made his way to Hollywood when “talking pictures” created a demand for writers. He took a short hiatus from Hollywood after the car he...

How does one form a meaningful relationship in the modern world? And once you do, how do you keep that relationship from dying, or turning into something else entirely? The Dead Thing is a supernatural story set in the modern online dating scene. It is an examination of how we make (or fail to make) connections in a technology-fueled world, and what can happen when those connections become too intense. This film comes from Elric Kane and is his first feature as a solo director.
Co-written with Webb Wilcoxen, The Dead Thing opens on Alex (Blu Hunt), a lonely woman trapped in the internet dating scene of LA. She splits her time between a colorless job as a document scanner and swiping through her dating app. She regularly goes out with men, hoping that one of them will be the right match. But none of the men that she meets are terribly interesting.

The Dead, the Bloody FM podcast network co-production with the George A. Romero Foundation, returns for a new season Tuesday, July 16th. Each mini season of the scripted podcast features a different writer expanding Romero’s zombie universe.
Chapter 6: Turas is written by Ck Anderson, a horror and thriller screenwriter and film professor now based in Pittsburgh. Anderson teases, “I’ve been working on Turas for close to a year now, and I’m so excited to finally get it out into the world. I hope you all enjoy listening to this spooky journey through the Scottish countryside as much as I enjoyed writing it!”
“The Dead aims to offer new and old fans of George A. Romero’s works a deep dive into the world of the undead he’s inspired. The contributing writers for this anthology series, through mentoring with The George A. Romero Foundation, have brought...

If Universal Pictures decides to drag out the body of Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg’s 2004 horror-comedy masterpiece Shaun of the Dead from its resting place and give it the unholy franchise undeath treatment, all the vinyl pressings of the Batman soundtrack in the world won’t be able to stop them.
Wright and Pegg’s landmark Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy concluded over a decade ago, and the latter actor/writer has been clear in the ensuing years that he’s moved on from playing different flavors of the action-comedy leading man role in quippy, science fiction-y cult classics. While many fans of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and, to a lesser extent, The World’s End still feel that their personal favorite of the landmark films could and should have been a franchise, last year, Pegg called the nostalgic attachment that causes his Twitter followers to demand sequels to...

Even though American English comes from across the pond, many discrepancies have risen between the two languages over the years, whether it's the meaning of certain words in different contexts or the pronunciation of words like "herbs" and "aluminum." There are also more amusing cases when words like "fanny" have a much different meaning in the United Kingdom. So when a movie is being imported into the United States from the UK, that can occasionally create some challenges with a film's dialogue, especially if a particular line is intended to be a punchline and the words in question have different meaning in the U.S. That's exactly why Edgar Wright's quintessential horror comedy "Shaun of the Dead" (which is still influencing movies today) had to change just one line for American audiences.
