Eddie Money, a major hitmaker of the '70s and '80s, always looked like he was having fun.

Eddie Money, the singer, songwriter and saxophonist best known for radio-friendly hit songs like “Baby Hold On,” and “Two Tickets to Paradise,” died from complications from cancer on Friday, Sept. 13, according to Variety. He was 70.

"The Money Family regrets to announce that Eddie passed away peacefully early this morning," his family announced in a statement. "It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our loving husband and father. We cannot imagine our world without him. We are grateful that he will live on forever through his music.”

Blink-182 will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their landmark album Enema of the State by playing it straight through on their summer tour with special guests Lil Wayne and Neck Deep. The Motion Picture Academy is embroiled in a minor dustup involving the disqualification of one of the five nominees for Best Original Song because of some shady campaigning. The songwriter of “Alone, Yet Not Alone” is fighting back, and most aggravatingly, “Godless Hollywood” is being blamed for unfairly picking on this plucky underdog of a nominee, which is the theme song to an obscure Christian film that has only played in a few theaters. Why, it’s a regular “David vs. Goliath!”

It doesn’t help the songwriter’s case that the song is terrible, and sounds like an outtake from the Sandi Patti box set.

Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time The Academy nominated terrible songs and left out more deserving fare. In fact, here are a few Best Original Song nominees from the past that should have been disqualified instantly. Not for any impropriety … but because they suck.

Annette Funicello, who has died of complications from multiple sclerosis aged 70, was instantly associated with two names: Mickey Mouse and Frankie Avalon, both of whom were squeaky clean. As a child, Funicello was one of the first Mouseketeers on the original Mickey Mouse Club, the hugely popular Walt Disney children's television programme. In her early 20s, Funicello co-starred with the pop singer Avalon in five "Beach Party" musicals, in which they played wholesome "teenage" sweethearts called Dee Dee and Frankie, always testing each other's fidelity.

Born in Utica, New York, Funicello took ballet dancing lessons as a child to overcome shyness. Annette Funicello, who became a child star as a perky, cute-as-a-button Mouseketeer on The Mickey Mouse Club in the 1950s, then teamed up with Frankie Avalon on a string of 1960s fun-in-the-sun movies with names like Beach Blanket Bingo and Bikini Beach, died Monday. She was 70.

She died at Mercy Southwest Hospital in Bakersfield, California, of complications from multiple sclerosis, the Walt Disney Co said.

Funicello stunned fans and friends in 1992 with the announcement about her ailment. Yet she was cheerful and upbeat, grappling with the disease with a courage that contrasted with her lightweight teen image of old.

This Thursday, Jersey Shore returns for its fifth season. (Can you believe it? It seems like mere months ago that we watched Snooki get punched in the face. Ah, memories...) And after a wacky, extra-tense "vacation" in Italy, the shore kids will return to their native habitat this season. Back to the beach house, back to the boardwalk, and -- for the boys -- back to their favorite barbers, who know just how to cut Pauly's blowout and shave the blasphemous cross into the back of The Situation's head.

It’s time to bring back EW Extras, a recurring column that allows us to right these kind of tragic wrongs (see also: Weekend at Bernie’s) and create the DVD extras that never were.

If you were anywhere near a television that had cable in the mid-1980s, you saw Better Off Dead. A hundred times.

The best film by Savage Steve Holland, a fringe director and animator (he created Press Your Luck "Whammy!"), Better Off Dead is a mix of teen angst, broad comedy and lengthy trips into the surreal. This manifests itself with a stop-motion hamburger singing Van Halen, a team of Japanese Howard Cosell impersonators and, seared upon the brain of everyone of a certain age, a maniacal paperboy who will stop at nothing to get his two dollars.

So . . .just who is the guy we've been quoting all these years? His name is Demian Slade (he was also Bobby in Back to the Beach), and I had the opportunity to chat with this very good spirited dude in anticipation of Better Off Dead getting its release on Blu-ray. Here are the highlights of that conversation.

When all is said and done, history will not look back fondly at the second season of Jersey Shore. The lovable group of scamps that we were first introduced to last year as they summered on the beaches of Sleazeside Heights, blissfully unaware of the mega-celebrities that they would become, are gone. Yes, their corporeal forms remain the same, but their personalities have shifted in significant ways since the halcyon days of Summer 2009 when the show’s first season has taped. And really, that’s what drew people into the show in the first place, the outgoing and unique personalities of the show’s main core of characters: The Situation, DJ Pauly D, Snooki and, to a lesser extent, the rest of them. While we don’t blame MTV for getting the band back together again in February of 2010 to begin filming the M.I.A. season — gotta strike while the iron is hot!
