In 2004, MTV premiered Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County and gave viewers an insight into the lives of teenagers and young 20-something's living in Laguna Beach, California. There were makeups and breakups, high school graduations, and "Come Clean" by Hilary Duff playing over and over in our heads.
The show aired for three seasons and paved the way for the spinoffs, The Hills and The Hills: New Beginnings. The reality show helped launch the careers of cast members like Kristin Cavallari and Lauren Conrad. For millennials who were choosing sides in the love triangle between Kristin, Lauren, and Stephen, or obsessed with their 2000s fashion, it's hard to believe Laguna Beach aired 20 years ago.

For millennials, reality TV star Kristin Cavallari is a household name. She first graced our TV screens on MTV's Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County and was dubbed the bad apple among her group of high school friends as her relationship with Stephen Colletti stirred up drama with cast member and "nice girl" Lauren Conrad. Kristin would return to television with the Laguna Beach spinoff The Hills and The Hills: New Beginnings, which gave us famous reality star faces like Spencer and Heidi Pratt.
While some reality TV stars fade away from the spotlight, that hasn't been the case for Kristin Cavallari. She made her way from TV to businesswoman after launching her successful line Uncommon James and becoming a published author with her cookbooks. However, she's also been making headlines for her many relationships, which include a famous athlete, a former boy band member, and a man much younger than her.

Alan Hale, Jr. became a performer as part of his family's legacy. His mother was actress Gretchen Hartman who appeared in dozens of films in the 1910s, while his father, Alan Hale (real name: Rufus Edward MacKahan) racked up hundreds of credits in the silent era, typically as a reliable sidekick to Errol Flynn. Hartman retired from acting in 1929, and Hale, Sr. continued to work until his death in 1950. Alan Hale, Jr. first appeared on the screen as an infant, "starring" opposite his mother. Hale made his Broadway debut in 1931, when he was only 10, appearing in a very, very short-lived show called "Caught Wet" (it opened and closed in the same month). In 1933, Hale played uncredited role in William Wellman's Depression-era drama "Wild Boys of the Road," and it may be the first movie a casual observer would recognize him in.

Two of the credited screenwriters on Leonard Nimoy's "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" were Steve Meerson and Peter Krikes, the screenwriters behind the Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello flick "Back to the Beach," the two-Van-Dammes-for-the-price-of-one movie "Double Impact," and the 1999 would-be Oscar darling "Anna and the King." "Star Trek IV" was one of their first major screenwriting gigs, and it was a dizzying experience. The screenwriters remembered meeting with Nimoy and with producer Harve Bennett for a brainstorming session, and it seems that no one could come to any kind of solid conclusions. Bennett mentioned that he wanted the next movie to be a throwback to "The City on the Edge of Forever," one of the most celebrated episodes of the series. Nimoy was in a weird headspace, talking about environmentalism and biodiversity. Meerson recalls: "Leonard started talking about plankton, cells, that cells become plankton, that things eat plankton...

Spencer Pratt believes The Hills production created a fake ending to avoid a lawsuit. The majority of The Hills was scripted or fabricated by producers, with crafted story points. Kristin Cavallari, Spencer Pratt, and Heidi Pratt helped shape the scripted nature of reality TV.
The Hills may not have included Kristin Cavallari for the entirety of the series, but having been a major part of the end of the series, she has some major feelings about a fan theory surrounding the series. Kristin, who joined Heidi Pratt and Spencer Pratt on the MTV reality series after Lauren Conrad’s departure, has revisited the reality TV space post Laguna Beach and The Hills. First, with her own series Very Cavallari, then on her successful podcast Back To The Beach with ex-boyfriend and co-star from Laguna Beach Stephen Colletti. Kristin has remained a presence in the entertainment industry post-reality TV, always staying authentic and honest.

Layla Sarakalo has exactly one (1) credit on her IMDb page. In Leonard Nimoy's 1986 film "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home," she played a passer-by on the street who stopped briefly to talk to Pavel Chekov (Walter Koenig) and Nyota Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), who sought the location of nuclear vessels parked in Alameda, California. The scene sticks out in the memory because of Keonig's notorious pronunciation of "vessels" as "wessels." Koenig, as one might predict, has been asked to say "wessels" at multiple Star Trek conventions over the years, and is quite likely very sick of it. Keonig turns 87 in September, so please stop asking.
Sarakalo, however, only ever appeared in this one scene in "Star Trek" and hasn't acted before or since. According to her IMDb page, Sarakalo landed the role as an extra through a stroke of bad luck. In order to clear the San Francisco streets for the scene in question,...

The late, great Paul Reubens completely changed the landscape of comedy with his character of Pee-wee Herman, becoming one of the handful of celebrities like Jim "Ernest P. Worrell" Varney, Cassandra "Elvira" Peterson, and Glenn "Divine" Milstead who become synonymous with their most famous roles. Honestly, there were probably a lot of people who learned of his passing at the same time they learned his actual name. Don't get me wrong, Pee-wee Herman is one of the greatest and most influential characters ever shown on screen and his hopeful embrace of the weird and creative has certainly made the world a better place. But Reubens was so much more than Pee-wee Herman and brought a number of other hilarious roles to life.

Showing off her toned legs, the Very Cavallari star sizzled as she modeled a ripped and tiny pair of daisy dukes, also going casual in a light gray Anine Bing hoodie.
Kristin added in shades as she wore her blonde locks loose.

The Motion Picture Academy is embroiled in a minor dustup involving the disqualification of one of the five nominees for Best Original Song because of some shady campaigning. The songwriter of “Alone, Yet Not Alone” is fighting back, and most aggravatingly, “Godless Hollywood” is being blamed for unfairly picking on this plucky underdog of a nominee, which is the theme song to an obscure Christian film that has only played in a few theaters. Why, it’s a regular “David vs. Goliath!”
It doesn’t help the songwriter’s case that the song is terrible, and sounds like an outtake from the Sandi Patti box set.
Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time The Academy nominated terrible songs and left out more deserving fare. In fact, here are a few Best Original Song nominees from the past that should have been disqualified instantly. Not for any impropriety … but because they suck.

This is another edition of Short Starts, where we present a weekly short film(s) from the start of a filmmaker or actor’s career. He’s only directed three films, including the new sci-fi rom-com About Time, but Richard Curtis has been a well-known screenwriter for a few decades. When we think of a Curtis movie, we don’t just consider his popular directorial debut, Love Actually (and nobody here thinks of Pirate Radio, aka The Boat That Rocked). We think of Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a Funeral, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. He also wrote The Girl in the Cafe and one of the best episodes of Doctor Who (“Vincent and the Doctor”), and he co-scripted Bridget Jones’s Diary and its sequel, as well as War Horse. Plus he co-created Blackadder and Mr. Bean, both with regular collaborator Rowan Atkinson. Curtis...

Mickey Mouse Club favourite who appeared with Frankie Avalon in 60s Beach Party musicals
Annette Funicello, who has died of complications from multiple sclerosis aged 70, was instantly associated with two names: Mickey Mouse and Frankie Avalon, both of whom were squeaky clean. As a child, Funicello was one of the first Mouseketeers on the original Mickey Mouse Club, the hugely popular Walt Disney children's television programme. In her early 20s, Funicello co-starred with the pop singer Avalon in five "Beach Party" musicals, in which they played wholesome "teenage" sweethearts called Dee Dee and Frankie, always testing each other's fidelity.
Born in Utica, New York, Funicello took ballet dancing lessons as a child to overcome shyness. In 1955, some years after her family had moved to southern California, the 12-year-old was chosen by Disney himself from 200 children auditioning for the first season of the Mickey Mouse Club. Former child star was hand-picked by Walt Disney and spoke openly about the degenerative effects of multiple sclerosis
Annette Funicello, who became a child star as a perky, cute-as-a-button Mouseketeer on The Mickey Mouse Club in the 1950s, then teamed up with Frankie Avalon on a string of 1960s fun-in-the-sun movies with names like Beach Blanket Bingo and Bikini Beach, died Monday. She was 70.
She died at Mercy Southwest Hospital in Bakersfield, California, of complications from multiple sclerosis, the Walt Disney Co said.
Funicello stunned fans and friends in 1992 with the announcement about her ailment. Yet she was cheerful and upbeat, grappling with the disease with a courage that contrasted with her lightweight teen image of old.

It’s time to bring back EW Extras, a recurring column that allows us to right these kind of tragic wrongs (see also: Weekend at Bernie’s) and create the DVD extras that never were.

If you were anywhere near a television that had cable in the mid-1980s, you saw Better Off Dead. A hundred times.
The best film by Savage Steve Holland, a fringe director and animator (he created Press Your Luck "Whammy!"), Better Off Dead is a mix of teen angst, broad comedy and lengthy trips into the surreal. This manifests itself with a stop-motion hamburger singing Van Halen, a team of Japanese Howard Cosell impersonators and, seared upon the brain of everyone of a certain age, a maniacal paperboy who will stop at nothing to get his two dollars.
So . . .just who is the guy we've been quoting all these years? His name is Demian Slade (he was also Bobby in Back to the Beach), and I had the opportunity to chat with this very good spirited dude in anticipation of Better Off Dead getting its release on Blu-ray. Here are the highlights of that conversation.

When all is said and done, history will not look back fondly at the second season of Jersey Shore. The lovable group of scamps that we were first introduced to last year as they summered on the beaches of Sleazeside Heights, blissfully unaware of the mega-celebrities that they would become, are gone. Yes, their corporeal forms remain the same, but their personalities have shifted in significant ways since the halcyon days of Summer 2009 when the show’s first season has taped. And really, that’s what drew people into the show in the first place, the outgoing and unique personalities of the show’s main core of characters: The Situation, DJ Pauly D, Snooki and, to a lesser extent, the rest of them. While we don’t blame MTV for getting the band back together again in February of 2010 to begin filming the M.I.A. season — gotta strike while the iron is hot!
