Robert Duvall was originally offered the leading role. The studio rejected him; some say because they felt he wasn't right for the role, and others stated it was because he wasn't a bankable leading man. So, Conti replaced Duvall in the lead role.

When Robert Duvall was being considered for the lead role, the producers decided to opt instead for Tom Conti because of the Oscar® buzz on his recent film Reuben, Reuben... (1983). Ironically, it would be Duvall who won the Best Actor Academy Award that year for Un tenero ringraziamento (1983).
