Bob Elmore, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 Leatherface Actor, Has Passed Away
Image
Actor and stuntman Bob Elmore, best known for portraying the iconic Leatherface character in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, has died. Bloody Disgusting has reported on Elmore's death, but no additional details, such as a possible cause, have been revealed.

Released in 1986, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 was the only sequel in the franchise to be directed by Tobe Hooper, who also helmed the original film released in 1974. The role of Leatherface, played by the late Gunnar Hansen in the first film, was taken over by Elmore, though Bill Johnson and Tom Morga also filled in for certain shots.

The sequel generated a cult following and remains a favorite for many horror fans after almost four decades. Elmore became a favorite for people to meet at fan conventions, becoming well known on the fan con circuit. The actor himself had previously expressed how he was in awe that the movie...

The Correct Order To Watch The Police Academy Movies
Image
One cannot understate the strange cultural dominance Hugh Wilson's 1984 comedy "Police Academy" held over the pop zeitgeist throughout the 1980s. Clearly a child of "Animal House," "Police Academy" was a traditional snobs-vs.-slobs comedy that pitted winking wiseacres against their stern commanding officers at a police school in an unnamed city. I've long had a theory that the "Police Academy" movies take place in Metropolis, the city where Superman lives. With Superman taking care of major crimes, the local police force would likely become complacent, unused to enforcing the law.

None of the "Police Academy" movies were well-reviewed, recognized by critics as crass, dumb, and low-brow. This is a series that banks on misogyny, offensive stereotypes, and a lot of crotch/sex humor. There is no wit to the "Police Academy" movies. Roger Ebert famously gave the first film zero stars, citing merely how dreadfully unfunny and uninspired it is.

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in Nace una estrella (2018)
What’s New on HBO and Max in June 2023
Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in Nace una estrella (2018)
Max’s first full month without ‘HBO’ in its rebranded title has a selection that kicks off summer 2023 in fine fashion. Three of the four iterations of “A Star Is Born,” including the most recent remake starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, are streaming on Max in June. The 1954 and 1976 films land June 1, while the 2018 version arrives June 8.

To prepare for Margot Robbie’s performance in “Barbie” come July, one could watch one of her more intense roles as Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya” (2017). For some lighter summer watches, viewers might consider “Dolphin Tale” (2010), “Grease” (1978), “Hairspray” (2007) or “Tooth Fairy” (2010).

“Magic Mike’s Last Dance” (2023) starring Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek Pinault lands at Max after its theatrical release in February this year. Another major theatrical release from 2022, “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022), swims onto the streamer starting June 7.

As for TV series, “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson’s “The Idol,” starring Abel...

HBO and Max New Releases: June 2023
Image
HBO Max is no more. In its place are…HBO and Max. Warner Bros. Discovery’s big change to its premier streaming service was simply to take the “HBO” off of the name “HBO Max,” leaving just “Max.” But in announcing its list of new releases for Max in June 2023, Warner is highlighting all of the HBO content anyway. So here is everything you can expect to find on Max (including every new HBO show) this month.

Even though June 2023 is the first full month of Max’s existence without the helpful “HBO” modifier in front of it, literally all of its major original offerings are thanks to the pay cable network. June 4 sees the premiere of The Idol, the controversial TV project starring The Weeknd and written by Euphoria‘s Sam Levinson. After that, season 3 of Danny McBride evangelical comedy The Righteous Gemstones premieres on June 18. That will be...

Howard Hesseman
Howard Hesseman, the actor best known for playing DJ Dr. Johnny Fever in “Wkrp in Cincinnati,” has died, his manager of 35 years, Robbie Kass of Kass Management, confirms. He was 81.

“Unfortunately, I can confirm that Howard passed away on Saturday at 5 p.m. in Los Angeles,” Kass said, adding that Howard underwent colon surgery several weeks ago and suffered complications of the surgery.

Netflix Is Losing A Ton Of Great Movies In May
Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, and Joe Pesci in Buenos muchachos (1990)
Netflix giveth and Netflix taketh away. Everyone who uses streaming services will know that as rights deals expire, movies come and go from various platforms. However, May looks to be an especially tough month for Netflix, with a lot of amazing films departing. This includes classics like Goodfellas, The Dirty Dozen, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Blade Runner: The Final Cut.

But surely the most missed will be Frank Darabont’s beloved The Shawshank Redemption. The pic is comfortably at the top of the IMDb Top 250 and its story of being confined and dreaming of escape has to appeal to viewers stuck inside due to Coronavirus lockdown.

Here’s the full list of what’s leaving:

A Cinderella Story (2004)

A Little Princess (1995)

A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)

American Experience: The Circus (2018)

Blade Runner: The Final Cut (1982)

Police Academy Franchise Facts You Never Knew You Needed
Loca academia de policía (1984)
When the original Police Academy barnstormed its way into theaters in 1984, nobody had any way of knowing that this film would be a franchise with 7 films to its credit. Grossing hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office, what Police Academy achieved is nothing short of astounding. With a cast of mostly unknown character actors, this film clicked with a public who seemed to be starved for the wacky, slapstick comic situations that Police Academy so deftly offered.

Making this even more astounding is that it wasn't like 1984 was devoid of comedies. Ghostbusters and Beverly Hills Cop were both in theaters and each one of these raked in many millions of dollars. Somehow, Police Academy placed 6th on this list beating out such films as Footloose, Romancing the Stone and Splash. So how did this movie that was made for $4.5 million dollars go on to become a franchise? Well,...

Tim Robbins in Sueño de fuga (1994)
Here’s Everything Leaving Netflix In April 2020
Tim Robbins in Sueño de fuga (1994)
Netflix has announced the television shows and movies that will be leaving their streaming service in April 2020.

Some of the biggest titles departing include 90’s mega-hits like The Shawshank Redemption and Goodfellas, popular comedies such as Step Brothers and The Hangover, and Nicolas Cage’s adventure flick National Treasure. Perhaps most unfortunate for many families will be the loss of the Looney Toons and basketball mashup Space Jam, which has recently been one of Netflix’s most watched films.

With so many people being forced inside during the Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak, it’s a shame any titles have to leave the service at all. But it should be noted that many of these could return in the future since Netflix has a tendency to add and remove the same movies and shows as licensing rights get purchased, expired, and renewed. So, maybe you won’t have to wait too long...

Hope You're Ready For More 'Police Academy,' Because Steve Guttenberg Is
One of the most successful comedy franchises of the 1980s-90s — Police Academy — is, according to actor Steve Guttenberg, ready to make a comeback. Launched in 1984, the original was an admittedly dopey series of films that spanned 10 years and seven adventures. The premise was a simple one: a newly-elected mayor passes a law that the police department must accept all willing recruits. The result? The motliest group of cops you've ever seen, one more dysfunctional than the next. The only true voice of sanity there was Steve's Cary Mahoney, who, over the course of the series, found himself promoted from cadet to officer and, finally, sergeant. Well, according to a recent Twitter posting, we've got a new entry coming. When fan Adam Hirschovitz wrote to him, "Please tell me you're making a new Police Academy film," Steve tweeted back, "Adam, the next Police Academy is coming, no details yet, but...

Coming to America 2 Brings Back Original Writers
Eddie Murphy in Un príncipe en Nueva York (1988)
Last month, a new report surfaced that comedy legend Eddie Murphy has been secretly writing the screenplay for Coming to America 2, a follow-up to his 1988 classic which he both starred in and received a story credit for. The news regarding this sequel was never confirmed, but first surfaced after Eddie Murphy's verified Twitter account sent out a tweet about a Coming to America sequel, which lead to the actor's entire account being deleted. Today we have confirmation that the sequel is actually happening, with original Coming to America writers Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield writing the script.

The news first surfaced after Eddie Murphy's Twitter account posted a cryptic tweet that only read, "Coming to America sequel?" along with a photo of the Princess Imani character played by Vanessa Bell Calloway. After the actor's account was deleted, a report surfaced that claimed Coming to America 2 is in fact in the works,...

Steve Guttenberg Responds to Bill Clinton's Love for Police Academy
Loca academia de policía (1984)
Over the past two weeks, the Republican and Democratic parties have held their national conventions in Cleveland and Philadelphia, where Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton were officially named as each party's candidate for President. On Tuesday night, Hillary's husband and former President Bill Clinton gave his speech at the convention, where he mentioned that during a particularly troubling time in his Presidency, the Monica Lewinsky scandal, he took a few days off with his daughter Chelsea Clinton, where they watched all six Police Academy movies. While this admission came as quite a surprise to most political pundits, Police Academy star Steve Guttenberg said he had heard the story before. Here's part of Bill Clinton's Tuesday night speech where he mentions Police Academy.

"Truth is, we rarely disagreed on parenting, although she did believe that I had gone a little over the top when I took a couple of...

The David Gordon Green Express
The mercurial director describes his latest film, Prince Avalanche, as an art movie invaded by a pair of multiplex goofballs – it's a tribute to the wide-ranging films of his adolescence

Prince Avalanche is a poignant comedy featuring tender performances from Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch as mutually antagonistic road-painters working the fire-scorched highways of late 1980s Texas. But as delicious as the film is, cinemagoers with long memories may regard it with justifiable caution. It's the latest movie from the writer-director David Gordon Green, whose work is best approached as the cinematic equivalent of a perpetually spinning coin. If a Green film falls shiny side up, it will transpire to be a lyrical arthouse elegy such as his debut, George Washington, which led to the director being anointed the new Terrence Malick, or All the Real Girls, a faltering love story from that bygone age before its star, Zooey Deschanel,...

Today Universal released Get Him to the Greek, a sort-of sequel to 2008's Forgetting Sarah Marshall as it uses Aldous Snow who had a small role in the original. Beyond that, there is only a brief reference to Sarah Marshall, which has me thinking it's not really a sequel as much as it is a spin-off. The same could be said for a movie like Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)... Same characters, but not really a sequel to Clerks, which ended up having its own sequel in 2006.

In a debate with a group of fellow Seattle critics trying to decide if Get Him to the Greek was a sequel to Forgetting Sarah Marshall or not, the topic turned to comedy sequels in general and I was asked to name a great comedy sequel. Should be easy... right?

I started mining my memory banks, and started thinking of movies with...

This Weekend in B.O. History...
The end of April is typically the calm before the summer storm, but Hollywood has become more and more aggressive with the timeframe as the years have progressed. This year, for instance, with Iron Man 2 set for May 7, high-profile A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) launches at 3,332 theaters on the April 30-May 1 weekend. Five Years Ago - 2005 This weekend was one of the industry's most significant bids to start the summer season early with the release of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and XXX: State of the Union, but it failed. Hitchhiker's Guide blasted off with a chart-topping $21.1 million at 3,133 sites, which was solid by sci-fi comedy standards but perceived as somewhat of a letdown for such a long-awaited book adaptation. The Vin Diesel-free XXX sequel opened in third with a disastrous $12.7 million at 3,480 sites after giving a generic Tom Clancy treatment to the extreme James Bond of the first movie.

This Weekend in Box Office History: Comparisons for April 23-25, 2010
Traditionally, late April hasn't been the most exciting time at the box office, but Hollywood has been making more and more attempts to capitalize on the days leading up to the summer movie season. Five Years Ago - 2005 The Interpreter topped the box office with $22.8 million at 2,758 theaters. It was one of the biggest-grossing debuts for a political thriller at the time. In second, The Amityville Horror (2005) had a solid second weekend hold by horror standards, while Sahara held well in third. The other nationwide debuts were a bust: A Lot Like Love opened to $7.6 million, Kung Fu Hustle mustered just $6.7 million and King's Ransom was ignored with $2.1 milllion. * Weekend Report Ten Years Ago - 2000 Trying to offer summer excitement in April, U-571 emerged with a chart-topping $19.6 million at 2,583 sites. That was and still is the highest-grossing debut ever for a submarine thriller, although it didn't pack quite as many...

The Spirit Awards Meets The Academy Awards
Everyone has already listed the Spirit Award and Academy Award winners so I can forego that pleasure here. More importantly, what does all this say about independent film?

What we have all known since sex, lies and videotape is that for fresh and original vision, one must tap into the independent film world.

What does it say about the international reality of film? East has met West and the world of art is -- to paraphrase one of the female winners of the Academy Awards (was it Kate Winslet?) -- One world which we must protect and nourish. And as for India, the way to the Land of Spices, which Columbus was seeking, has finally been reached and integration has been achieved. And that a major studio, itself founded by an immigrant Hungarian Jew, managed to create the Synthesis between indie and studio, East and West, in this time of great change: That major studio's specialty arm, the only one except for long standing Sony Pictures Classics, that has withstood the winds of change, Fox Searchlight, has reached its apex winning its first EIGHT Academy Awards just as Peter Chernin, 20 years the president and chief operating officer of News Corp. has resigned: That is what has transpired in the past three days of awards and today the first post-award day.

Finita la Comedia. Y ahora? Ahora si! Ya empieza la Dramadia del Distribucion! Vamos a ver, amigos, vamos a ver.
