Zombie movies and TV shows have always been popular with horror fans, from George Romero's Night of the Living Dead in 1968, to the big hits of today like The Last of Us and The Walking Dead franchise. A quality so many entries share, however, is that they are often understandably dark tales about the collapse of humanity, with a theme that relates to real life. For example, Night of the Living Dead spoke about race (albeit by accident), while its follow-up, Dawn of the Dead, was about consumerism. Between working on his horror film Peek-a-Boo and several other projects when he’s not playing Nikolas on General Hospital, Adam Huss has been ridiculously busy. He has a new TV series where he co-stars with Gh alum Ted King.

Heavy Hitters is Huss’ new show which revolves around the drama in professional baseball. Starring with Huss and King is Catherine Mary Stewart, who starred in 1984’s cult classic movie Night of the Comet and originated the character Kayla on Days of Our Lives in 1982, among many other projects. Soap Opera Digest reported on the new show, quoting a press release that stated, “Packed with fierce emotion, intense rivalries, and high-stakes drama, Heavy Hitters promises to deliver a fresh perspective on America’s favorite pastime.”

Huss told the outlet that his character is Coach Rob Mitchell, a gruff man who will stop at nothing to get his team to succeed.

Last year, writer/director Justin M. Seaman brought us a sequel to his 1989-set slasher The Barn (check out my review Here, get the movie Here)… and now he’s working on wrapping up the trilogy with a film appropriately titled The Barn Part III! The Barn and The Barn Part II (get that one Here) featured genre icons like Ari Lehman (who played young Jason Voorhees in the original Friday the 13th), legendary scream queen Linnea Quigley, drive-in critic Joe Bob Briggs, Diana Prince (a.k.a. Cult sci-fi movies of the 1980s bring a campy charm and quirky practical effects that set them apart from big hits. Low budgets and unique concepts made some lesser-known sci-fi films stand out, despite being overshadowed. Nostalgic and fun, these cult classics offer a different take on the sci-fi genre, making them worth revisiting today.

Sci-fi truly took on a life of its own in the 1980s and was majorly popular due to films like Back to the Future, Star Wars, Ghostbusters, and more. While these were very successful, there were countless other sci-fi movies that seemed to go under the radar. Sometimes, the major success of the others overshadowed them, or their low budgets were used for big futuristic concepts that didn't quite work at the time.

Cult sci-fi movies of the 1980s have a certain charm and campy quality to them that feels very different from big box-office hits.

We're hearing about so many new horror films lately, and we couldn't be more excited. Recently, we learned of an upcoming horror flick called Menace. IFC Films and Shudder have joined forces again and acquired North American rights to this movie, which is expected to be released sometime in 2025.

Menace is being described as a sci-fi horror film coming from Image Nation Abu Dhabi and the genre label Spooky Pictures. These two production companies were behind the horror movies Watcher and Late Night with the Devil. Randall Okita, who's known for helming the thriller flick See for Me, directed Menace from a screenplay written by Thom Eberhardt (Night of the Comet). Production on the movie recently wrapped in Canada.

Here's what Okita had to say about partnering with IFC Films and Shudder for Menace via Fangoria:

Just ten days ago, we shared the news that Isabel May of Let’s Scare Julie and the Yellowstone spin-off 1883 has the lead role in the sci-fi horror film Menace, the first film to be written by Night of the Comet screenwriter Thom Eberhardt in over 20 years. Now Variety reports that Menace has landed a distribution deal with IFC Films and the Shudder streaming service, with the plan being for IFC and Shudder to release the film in North America, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand sometime in 2025. Variety also unveiled a lower quality image of May’s character in the film, which can be seen above.

Directed by Randall Okita, who previously worked with IFC Films on the thriller See for Me, Menace follows a research student (Isabel May), who has a psychotic breakdown and is remanded to the custody of her aunt and uncle in a small town.

Would you believe that it has been over 20 years since Night of the Comet director/scribe Thom Eberhardt penned a movie? Well, he’s back, writing upcoming horror movie Menace, which is slated to make an appearance at this year’s Cannes Market.

Menace comes from Image Nation and Spooky Pictures, the studio behind Late Night with the Devil, a film that has been widely praised by critics and audiences (despite some controversies). Both companies were also behind 2022’s Watcher, another highly regarded work in the genre.

As far as I’m concerned, director Jim Wynorski’s 1986 film Chopping Mall (watch it Here) ranks up there as one of the most entertaining horror movies of the ’80s, which is the decade that brought a lot of my favorite horror movies into the world. It’s also a movie that doesn’t seem to get referenced often enough, and doesn’t get as much respect as it deserves – even if James Wan wants to remake it and Shout Factory TV aired it for 24 hours straight on Black Friday. So I’m glad to see that Chopping Mall is getting some love from the folks at Encyclopocalypse Publications, who have announced that they’re teaming up with Shout Factory and author Brian G. Berry for a Chopping Mall novelization!

Jennifer’s Body writer Diablo Cody returned to horror over the weekend with the theatrical release of horror-comedy Lisa Frankenstein, directed by Zelda Williams and starring Kathryn Newton (Freaky) and Cole Sprouse (“Riverdale”). While the film may go on to become a cult favorite, it unfortunately didn’t make much of a splash in its opening weekend.

Lisa Frankenstein scared up just $3.8 million in its theatrical debut here in the United States, with Focus Features giving the film a massive wide release in 3,144 total theaters.

The production budget for Zelda Williams’ Lisa Frankenstein was a reported $13 million, so the film has quite a long way to go before it starts turning a profit for Focus Features.

The film is currently “rotten” on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with a 49% Tomatometer score. The good news? The film’s audience score is much higher at 82% fresh.

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" remains beloved for its unique mix of horror, teen drama, and genuinely affecting storytelling. Following the much-derided "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" movie in 1992, creator and writer Joss Whedon took the reins of a TV show version and restored his vision of an empowered female protagonist who could take on the forces of darkness and prevail.

As the writer told CBS Sunday Morning, when conceiving of the idea for "Buffy," he "loved the idea of a girl going into a dark alley, and a monster comes, and then she just aces him." Whedon was infamously disappointed in the 1992 movie, openly talking about how director Fran Rubel Kuzui diverged from his original vision and turned it into a light-hearted camp-fest — though the case has been made for "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" actually being a good movie. However, the TV show was, as far as Whedon was concerned, Buffy done right.

“Better than Die Hard.” Speak these words at any Christmas party, and someone will be barefoot as Alabama and ready to discuss this further before you can pour another scoop of eggnog, but you add, “And Lethal Weapon,” and now you have a two-front holiday war to the soundtrack of Silver Bells. The battle for the title of best anti-Christmas movie is typically waged between the two ‘80s cop movies.

Lethal Weapon stars Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as two mismatched officers thrown together by their superior in the holiday season, during which they uncover a drug smuggling operation run by ex-military and almost get themselves killed. Die Hard stars Bruce Willis as a New York detective, visiting his wife in LA at her employer’s Christmas party when burglars take the staff hostage, and Willis's John McClane becomes a one-man army who takes on the team of professionals.

On the 9th day of Creepmas, the aliens and tech run amok to stuff the socks with horror. Science fiction’s broad umbrella covers everything from the future to outer space to alternate realities via technology. The unexplored terrain and concepts within sci-fi provide fertile ground for horror; what’s scarier than the unknown? Even worse, what happens when sci-fi horror invades the holidays? Sometimes, it means one bleak holiday. For other movies, it yields zany results.

The 12 Days of Creepmas continues on Bloody Disgusting, this time with 9 sci-fi horror movies that get a bit wild with the yuletide theme.

Star Trek: Voyager premiered in January 1995 as the flagship for the nascent United Paramount Network. The network didn't survive, but the show completed seven lively seasons and 172 episodes, joining the ranks of other classic Star Trek series of the era. Sharon Farrell, who was best known for her roles in horror film “It’s Alive” and soap opera “The Young and the Restless,” has died at the age of 82.

News of Farrell’s passing was shared this week by Farrell’s sister, Dale Candice Forsmoe, who wrote on Facebook that her sister’s passing happened several months ago. According to Forsmoe, her sister died on May 15.

As shared by the horror film site Horror Society, after beginning her career as a ballet dancer, Farrell worked in the entertainment industry for 40 years. She earned a number of roles in horror films, including “It’s Alive,” “The Premonition” and “Night of the Comet.” She also starred in the soap opera “The Young and the Restless” for six years during the 1990s and had a guest role during the final season of the original “Hawaii Five-o.”

Farrell had an extensive resume, but is best remembered for the film It’s Alive, in which she played the mother of a murderous deformed infant. She also had roles in the films The Stunt Man, Lone Wolf McQuade, Marlowe, The Reivers (with Steve McQueen) and Can’t Buy Me Love (1987).

On television, Farrell recurred as Det. Lori Wilson in the final season of the original Hawaii Five-o. She was also Florence Webster on the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless from 1991-97.

Born Sharon Forsmoe on Christmas Eve in 1940 in Sioux City, Iowa, she moved to New York, where she acted and modeled.

Sharon Farrell, who starred as the mother of a murderous infant in It’s Alive and contributed strong supporting turns opposite James Garner and Steve McQueen, respectively, in the 1969 films Marlowe and The Reivers, has died. She was 82.

Farrell died unexpectedly May 15 of natural causes at a hospital in Orange County, her son, Chance Boyer, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Farrell also played a movie hairstylist in Richard Rush‘s The Stunt Man (1980), the ex-wife of Chuck Norris’ Texas Ranger in Lone Wolf McQuade (1983) and the mother of the cheerleader portrayed by Amanda Peterson in Can’t Buy Me Love (1987).

On television, Farrell recurred as Det. Lori Wilson on the final season (1979-80) of CBS’ Hawaii Five-o and was Florence Webster, mother of Tricia Cast’s Nina Webster, on the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless from 1991-97.

My Bloody Valentine will be released on 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray on September 12 via Scream Factory. The uncut version has been newly restored in 4K with Dolby Vision. The three-disc set also includes the theatrical version on Blu-ray.

Most of humanity has turned to dust. Some have mutated into zombies. And even fewer are just trying to survive. In the 1984 cult classic Night of the Comet, teenage sisters Reggie (Catherine Mary Stewart) and Sam (Kelli Maroney) fight to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. They encounter sinister scientists, and demented mutants, and have to navigate a world that has completely shifted over the night. Their prefrontal cortexes haven’t even finished developing. They have to make sense of their new reality. But the sisters prove to be capable of taking on all that a post-apocalyptic California can throw their way. Like many films, Night of the Comet has aged like wine, better and more appreciated as time goes on. Though it was regarded as a B movie, it influenced the creation of another girl who was also skilled at fighting off hellish fiends: Buffy Summers of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

The threat of global apocalypse has influenced genre filmmaking from the very beginning. One of the earliest apocalyptic films we have a record of is 1916's "The End Of The World," which illustrates the disastrous consequences of a comet that flies near Earth. The plot is often understood as a response to the near-apocalyptic event of 1910, when Halley's Comet got a little too close for comfort. World events themselves became quite apocalyptic during WWII, but films of this nature actually weren't popular at the time; the news provided enough scares.

1984, the year of many interests and fears for Americans, from fears of a nuclear attack still remaining to a love-hate relationship with consumerism, American films explored teenage life in all its aspects. Some of these films were more memorable and on point for life and fears of the American teenager from living in the valley in Valley Girl, survival like Red Dawn and The Zero Boys, and a whole lot more; the mid-1980s were filled with teen cinema, and some of it was definitely on the dark side. The impact of George A. Romero’s Dead movies reached far and wide. After 1968’s Night of the Living Dead defined the modern zombie as we know it, 1978’s Dawn of the Dead kick-started zombie cinema in earnest. Not only did it herald a horde of undead movies domestically, the infection spread internationally — although the outbreak took longer to reach some regions than others.

While Italy was first to strike with Lucio Fulci’s Zombie in 1979, Hong Kong wouldn’t get its first zombie movie until two decades later. A zombie film set in a mall, 1998’s Bio Zombie is a direct descendant of Dawn of the Dead. It also draws influence from the original Resident Evil game (which is featured in the film), although the zombie comedy plays more like a Return of the Living Dead sequel by way of early Kevin Smith (think Clerks or Mallrats).

The Pitch: Among the five installments (soon to be six) of the celebrated "Final Destination" franchise, one maxim sits at the core of every elaborate death contained therein, summed up by Tony Todd's Bludworth: "In death, there are no accidents, no coincidences, no mishaps, and no escapes." When someone escapes death -- say, a plane crash that kills everyone else on board -- the resident Reaper figure of the franchise explains that near-death experiences are something like bugs in a system that, in the end, always gets their man. Death as an active enforcer was a hit concept for these movies, but "Sole Survivor" was playing in the same sandbox decades ago.

As you may recall, it was announced back in 2018 that Roxanne Benjamin would be scripting a remake of the 1984 horror movie Night of the Comet for Orion Pictures, but it’s been quite some time since we’ve heard a peep about the project. Thankfully, Slash Film provides a fresh update.

“That’s an interesting one. It’s still alive, just not really in the same iteration, but it’s still kicking,” Benjamin tells the site. “It’s gone through a lot of different — everything’s consolidating with everything. The snake is eating itself in our industry right now. So it’s gone through a lot of different hands, I think, throughout the process, but it’s still out there.”

Roxanne Benjamin has quietly become a staple of horror over the better part of the last decade. The filmmaker made her imprint on many a genre fan with her segment in the much-beloved anthology "Southbound," before also contributing to "Xx." Benjamin then made her debut feature, the absolutely terrifying "Body at Brighton Rock," which was released in 2019. Now, after a several year stint directing on shows such as "Riverdale" and "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina," Benjamin is back with her latest feature, "There's Something Wrong With the Children."
