Adam Lambert used his birthday as a moment to speak up for change this year.
The Grammy-nominated singer is currently starring as the Emcee in Cabaret on Broadway and he was presented with a giant pineapple-shaped birthday cake during the curtain call on Wednesday night (January 29) at the August Wilson Theatre in New York City.
Cast member David Merino led the celebration for Adam‘s birthday and the performance just so happened to be a benefit for Pride Live and the Stonewall National Monument Visitors Center.
“Thank you so, so much. The harmonies were great! That was fabulous,” Adam began his speech after the cast sang “Happy Birthday” to him.

He continued, “Thanks everybody for being here. I am so thrilled to be here on my birthday, doing what I love. I just hope that everybody in the audience tonight learned something tonight. Not to bring it down,...

The Academy Awards have staged some iconic showdowns. Think of the tension around “La La Land” versus “Moonlight,” “12 Years a Slave” versus “Gravity” or “The Godfather” versus “Cabaret.” Each was a nail-biter that kept viewers on the edge of their seats. But what happens when six films — “Anora,” “The Brutalist,” “A Complete Unknown,” “Conclave,” “Emilia Pérez” and “Wicked” — are all serious contenders for Hollywood’s most coveted prize? Enter “The Year Without the Frontrunner,” as Variety aptly dubbed it.
So, what is the pathway for each contender?
With 13 nominations, “Emilia Pérez” seems to have the logical edge (although recent controversies could derail that assertion). It has key guild nods and below-the-line Oscar mentions. But in this unpredictable year, historical trends are no guarantee. Major upcoming ceremonies like DGA, PGA and SAG may clarify the race — or make it even messier.

If you’re from out of town (or even a New Yorker who normally avoids the theatre district like the plague), securing coveted seats to blockbuster musicals, plays, and other live shows on Broadway can be confusing. But with a bit of planning, it’s more accessible than ever to buy Broadway tickets to some of the most successful shows — like Hamilton, Wicked, and Chicago, to name a few.

Jennifer Lopez starred in the world premiere of “Kiss of the Spider Woman” at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, realizing a career-long aspiration to perform in a musical film. The Bill Condon-directed feature received a standing ovation at its Sunday night screening at the Eccles Theatre.
The film blends two contrasting storylines: a gritty prison drama set in 1983 Argentina and a vibrant Hollywood musical. It follows Luis Molina, a gay window dresser imprisoned on morals charges, and his cellmate Valentin Arregui, a Marxist revolutionary.
Condon reimagined the 1992 Broadway musical by creating a single fictional film within the narrative. This approach allowed Lopez to showcase her talents in elaborate musical numbers, including a Marilyn Monroe-inspired dance sequence.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life,” Lopez said after the screening, recalling her childhood inspiration from watching “West Side Story” with her mother. The film represents a technical triumph,...

Jennifer Lopez is not one of those actresses who disappears into a role. For one, she’s too famous to allow the audience to separate artist from character entirely. Often, those characters, whether Selena or in last year’s “Unstoppable” as a sports mom, are extensions of her persona, astral projections of her stature as a global pop superstar into a fantasy movie world that depends on her song-and-dance gifts. For another, a Jennifer Lopez joint is always more about her presence — her name on the marquee, her face under the big bright lights — than her skills in vanishing inside a character.
Writer/director Bill Condon’s “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” a new screen version of the John Kander and Fred Ebb Broadway musical itself inspired by Manuel Puig’s novel and Héctor Babenco’s 1985 Oscar winner, could do no better casting than Lopez as Ingrid Luna, a fictional...

There can be no question the Broadway musicals of John Kander and Fred Ebb have been charmed when it comes to movie adaptations. Bob Fosse’s 1972 film reinvention of Cabaret won eight Oscars. Director Rob Marshall and screenwriter Bill Condon’s cinematic interpretation of Chicago in 2002 is still the last musical to win the Best Picture Oscar. Both made the musical format work, even for those who hate movie musicals, by integrating the songs so they don’t collide with the narrative but seamlessly fit in with it.
It’s nice to report that the stunning new film adaptation of their 1993 Tony-winning musical Kiss of the Spider Woman joins Cabaret and Chicago as a master class in how to find the cinematic soul of...

Wicked‘s Cynthia Erivo and Emilia Pérez‘s Karla Sofía Gascón earned their widely predicted Best Actress Oscar nominations on Thursday. Their bids represent a rare double in Oscar history: This is the second time — and first in 60 years — that multiple musical performances are nominated in Best Actress.
Counting just traditional musicals with non-diegetic music, the last time this happened was, naturally, during the heyday of musicals in the 1960s. Julie Andrews and Debbie Reynolds were nominated for their respective 1964 films, Mary Poppins and The Unsinkable Molly Brown, with the former winning. There could’ve been a third musical nominee that year had My Fair Lady‘s Audrey Hepburn made the cut.
Andrews’ victory has been seen as a bit of sweet revenge after producer Jack Warner cast Hepburn instead of Andrews, who originated the role of Eliza Doolittle on Broadway in the film adaptation of My Fair Lady. Not...

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree — especially at the Oscars.
I’m Still Here‘s Fernanda Torres and Conclave‘s Isabella Rossellini joined their mothers, Fernanda Montenegro and Ingrid Bergman, respectively, as Oscar nominees on Thursday, becoming the fifth and sixth pairs of mother-daughter duos to be nominated for acting Oscars.
Torres, who cracked the top five in the Best Actress odds after her Golden Globe victory, is up for the award alongside Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Mikey Madison (Anora), and Demi Moore (The Substance). The nomination comes 26 years after Montenegro was shortlisted in the same category for Central Station and lost to Shakespeare in Love‘s Gwyneth Paltrow.
Rossellini, 72, received her long-awaited maiden Oscar bid in Best Supporting Actress, where she was third in the odds, in Edward Berger‘s papal thriller. She faces Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown), Ariana Grande (Wicked...

It’s Liza with a Z. Not Lisa with an S. Liza Minnelli is among those rare, true living legends who seem irreplaceable. Irreplaceable both in that their talent is immense and that it literally appears nobody from a younger generation has the capacity to do as many things as well as she did them. In Liza we have an iconic singer, dancer, and actor. And let’s not forget a pioneer of fashion! One thinks of peers like Barbra Streisand and Cher as apt comparisons and very few others.
Bruce David Klein’s new documentary Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story is an unabashed celebration of the woman as told by all of her best friends. Celebrity talking heads like Mia Farrow, Ben Vereen, Chita Rivera, and Joel Grey speak effervescently about Minnelli. Singer and good friend Michael Feinstein emerges as the central storyteller of the film, alongside Minnelli herself.

Walter Salles-directed I’m Still Here caps weeks of packed screenings after a Best Actress Golden Globe win by star Fernanda Torres with a theatrical release from Sony Pictures Classics on five screens in New York and LA. The distributor’s The Room Next Door jumps from 44 screens to over 850, the widest release of a Pedro Almodovar film.
Mubi is out with documentary Grand Theft Hamlet, A24’s Colman Domingo-starring Sing Sing is back at 500+ theaters, Bleecker Street’s Hard Truths by Mike Leigh, starring Marianne Jean-Baptiste, expands to 120 screens.
Torres of I’m Still Here is the daughter of Brazilian icon Fernanda Montenegro who was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Oscar for Salles’ breakout film Central Station. Earlier this month, Torres dedicated her Golden Globe to her mother, saying, “She was here 25 years ago and this is like proof that art can endure through life.” Her speech was a hit,...

Broadway took a somewhat humbling post-holiday slip at the box office last week, with the roster of shows down by three productions and overall receipts off by about 29% from the previous week when the New Year holidays helped boost attendance.
In all, the 30 shows grossed $32,176,529 for the week ending January 12, with attendance of 254,320 down about 13% from the previous week. About 92% of seats on Broadway were occupied, with an average ticket price of $126.52.
Twenty-two of the 30 productions reported decreases in grosses last week.
Going out on a very high note was Stereophonic, which ended its Broadway run on January 12 – a West End engagement and national U.S. tour are planned – with a weekly gross of $1,017,784 and attendance at 100% of capacity at the Golden. The David Adjmi play had recouped its Broadway investment (the play was capitalized at up to $4.8 million.)
Other figures of note:

This claim, included in Universal’s thorough and impressive list of box office achievements for 2024, is technically true: “Domestically ‘Wicked‘ is now … the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation of all-time at the domestic office ahead of ‘Grease’ ($188.62M).”
Also technically true is that “The Grinch” is bigger than “Gone with the Wind,” “Sing” is bigger than “Jaws,” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is bigger than “The Godfather.” Also, the 1977 first “Star Wars” is only the third biggest success of that franchise.
Presenting grosses without adjusting skews the real picture of how they compare. It is a prime case of film history erasure, an all-too common occurrence these days. The somewhat (but not impossible in most cases) effort to sort out the true success of films through history starts with adjusting box office takes to current ticket prices. Normally, that is fairly simple, since we know the costs by year and can do the math.

Musicals often go overlooked at the Academy Awards, but there are a handful of career-defining performances in the genre that have received the notable accolade. Chicago is the latest musical to win Best Picture, with recognition for the genre largely coming in the form of wins in the acting categories. Several of these actors play the lead or supporting roles in what's considered to be some of the best musicals of all time. Some of these actors were part of a significant sweep their film had at the Oscars that year, like Rita Moreno in West Side Story.
Others were the only ones to win for their musical film that night. In these roles, celebrated film actors like Anne Hathaway, Jamie Foxx, and Liza Minnelli blew critics and audiences away with their ability to transform into their famous characters, showing a whole new side to them as performers. Just above that film in the rankings are Luise Rainer for The Great Ziegfeld (1936), Helen Hayes for The Sin of Madelon Claudet (1932), Loretta Young for The Farmer’s Daughter (1947), and Marie Dressler for Min and Bill (1931).

Australian writer-director Michael Gracey was already several years into developing “The Greatest Showman,” his grand and ambitious musical biopic that took the filmmaker eight years to realize, when his star Hugh Jackman started having cold feet.
“Hugh was losing a bit of confidence in the music,” Gracey recalled in a recent conversation with IndieWire. “When we were really close to going into production, other people started getting in Hugh’s ear about the music not being good enough.” At the time, Gracey was a respected and prolific director of music videos, with deep roots in VFX and animation, as well as music. But he had not yet made his feature filmmaking debut. Feeling like he was losing the power of his voice with Jackman, he thought, “What if it wasn’t just me telling him the songs are actually good? What if someone like Robbie Williams told him that?”

Mikey Madison begins Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning drama “Anora” as a stripper who accepts thousands of dollars to be exclusive with her rich Russian client, Vanya (Mark Eidelstein) for a too-perfect week that ends with a diamond ring on her finger. But as quickly as the marriage came together, Vanya runs away while his family’s goons chase, gag and tie Ani up before forcing her to help them arrange an annulment. Needless to say, the film earns its R-rating with violence, drugs and of course, plenty of sex.
But there was no intimacy coordinator on set.
“It was a choice that I made,” Madison said in a conversation with Pamela Anderson for Variety‘s Actors on Actors. She went on to explain that Baker and his wife, producer Samantha Quan, offered her the chance to work with an intimacy coordinator, but she and Eidelstein “decided that it...

Eddie Redmayne, currently starring in Peacock’s buzzy series Day of the Jackal, has joined Julia Roberts and Elizabeth Olsen in Warner Bros. Pictures’ Panic Carefully.
Sam Esmail, the creator of the well-regarded thriller series Mr. Robot, wrote the script for the feature and is directing.
Plot and character details are being kept in the hard drive, but the project is described as a paranoid thriller that has tonal influences of Silence of the Lambs and involves the hunt for a cyber terrorist. The film is also a reteaming of Esmail and Roberts after Netflix hit Leave the World Behind.
Esmail and Chad Hamilton are producing via Email Corp., along with Scott Stuber, Roberts, Marisa Yeres Gill and Lisa Gillan. Kevin McCormick and Chrystal Li are overseeing the project for Warners.

In the past 96 years of the Academy Awards, there have only been two years in which two Black women were nominated for Best Actress in the same year. That ignominious statistic could very well change for the better this year, as performers Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”) and Marianne Jean-Baptiste (“Hard Truths”) are both closing in on nominations.
Erivo’s star turn as Elphaba, a role which won the Best Musical Actress trophy at the 2004 Tony Awards for Idina Menzel, currently ranks fifth in our combined Oscar odds. It would mark her second nomination in the category, following her breakout film role as Harriet Tubman in “Harriet” (2019). The actress earned two nominations that year, also receiving recognition for the song “Stand Up,” which she wrote with Joshuah Brian Campbell. The Tony winner for “The Color Purple” currently has 80% of experts and 40% of Gold Derby editors predicting her for the nom.

Although recordkeeping on the Golden Globes has been somewhat spotty over the course of their 82 years, it appears Netflix’s Emilia Pérez just set one with a whopping 10 nominations making it the most nominated ever for a film in the Musical or Comedy category, beating last year’s Barbie and 1972’s Cabaret by one. Both of those films received 9 nominations overall, and like Emilia Pérez ,were helped by having multiple song nominees. 1975’s Best Motion Picture -Drama nominee Nashville had 11 nominations overall by my count, but 7 of those came with various acting categories including 5 for supporting and 2 for Best Debut (which no longer exists).

It’s a good day for “Emilia Perez.”
Netflix’s genre-defying awards contender — the streaming giant’s awards season priority — earned 10 Golden Globes nominations on Monday, the most ever for a film in the comedy/musical category and the second-most in Globes history.
Robert Altman’s classic “Nashville” holds the Golden Globes record for nominations with 11 in the drama category. The previous comedy/musical films with the most nominations were “Cabaret” and “Barbie” with nine.
Written and directed by Jacques Audiard, “Emila Perez” is widely expected to be a major player at the Oscars. The film is a musical hybrid, with drama and action movie elements sprinkled throughout its story about a drug cartel leader who undergoes gender-confirmation surgery and begins to live as her true self.

Emilia Pérez had a record-breaking morning, with the Netflix film landing ten Golden Globe nominations, making it the most nominated comedy or musical film in the awards show’s history. It topped last year’s Barbie and 1972’s Cabaret, which each landed nine nominations. (The all-time record holder is 1975’s Nashville, which was a player in the drama category).
Emilia Pérez was a crowd pleaser out of Cannes, with Netflix swooping up the feature soon after its debut at the May festival. It centers on cartel leader Emilia (Karla Sofía Gascón) who hires attorney Rita (Zoe Saldaña) in a plan to fake her death so that she can transition into a woman and live as her true self.
The feature landed Golden Globe nominations for best picture, musical or comedy, as well as best picture, non-English language.

Moana star Auli’i Cravalho speaks out in defense of the emotional moments from the Wicked press tour, which recently went viral. The press tour included a heartfelt interview where Out magazine reporter Tracy Gilchrist shared how audiences—particularly queer viewers—were "really holding space" for the iconic song "Defying Gravity," leaving the film's stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo visibly emotional. The interviewer's reference to "holding space" sparked a wave of memes online, with some poking fun at the stars' teary-eyed responses throughout the tour.
In a conversation with Vanity Fair, Cravalho stood up for Grande and Erivo, passionately defending the emotions on display during the press tour. Both leading stars play pivotal roles in the two-part adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked, with Grande as Glinda and Erivo as Elphaba. Cravalho, no stranger to musical theater, appreciates the vulnerability required for such roles. Here's what she had to say:...

10 years ago, Auliʻi Cravalho was cast in her first professional acting role as a Disney princess. She would also be the studio’s first Polynesian princess (though the character herself insists she’s not technically a princess), marking a huge moment for Aapi representation.
Two years later, “Moana” officially hit theaters and has proven to have some strong sea legs, becoming the most streamed movie on Disney+ last year. It shot Cravalho to fame, but it also provided her with something that most actresses don’t get right away — or, in some cases, ever.
“Starting with an incredible film like ‘Moana’ meant that I could be choosy [about future roles], that I’m afforded the beauty of being picky,” Cravalho revealed to TheWrap.
The actress took full advantage of that opportunity immediately. Between starring in “Moana” and “Moana 2,” now in theaters everywhere, she’s played a teen facing homelessness in “All Together Now,...

It’s Musicals Week at IndieWire. With “Wicked” about to sparkle over theaters, we’re celebrating the best of the movie-musical genre.
Bob Fosse only directed five features — “Sweet Charity,” “Cabaret,” “Lenny,” “All That Jazz,” and “Star 80” — but among filmmakers and cinephiles, his legend looms large in proportion to the abundance of his output. David Fincher, for example, frequently references Fosse as an influence alongside and equal to far more prolific directors like Steven Spielberg, William Friedkin, and John Carpenter. In “A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies,” Fosse is one of only a few post-classical studio era auteurs (alongside Stanley Kubrick and Clint Eastwood) that Scorsese deems worthy of inclusion alongside old masters like Orson Welles and Sam Fuller.

For the last two years, Euphoria season 3's delays have been incredibly disappointing, yet the hiatus has created one silver lining that audiences should not underestimate. First released in 2019, Euphoria has captivated audiences with its talented ensemble cast, gorgeous visuals, and shocking storylines. Led by Zendaya, the show found incredible success for two seasons, when it hit a sudden and unexpected dead end. Although Euphoria season 3 has long been confirmed, showrunner Sam Levinson has struggled to figure out where to go with his successful young adult series, leaving the series unfortunately adrift.
Euphoria season 3's long hiatus has been frustrating for viewers, but also for the cast and crew. For many of Euphoria's cast, including Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi, the HBO series is what boosted them to new levels of fame. Therefore, it was likely unsettling to know that their launchpad into stardom was having a major setback.

Eddie Redmayne learned his “lesson” 10 years after starring in the 2015 biopic “The Danish Girl.” Redmayne, who portrayed trans activist Lili Elbe, a trans woman who received one of the earliest known gender-affirming surgeries, previously said in 2021 that he “wouldn’t take it on now” as a cisgender man.
In April 2024, Redmayne played the famously queer-coded Emcee character in the splashy Broadway production of “Cabaret.” During a recent appearance on Penn Badgley’s “Podcrushed” podcast, the actor explained the differences between those casting choices, adding that he knew “exactly what I was doing” by playing the Emcee after the controversy surrounding “The Danish Girl” casting.
“I have a history of parts that I’ve played, that have been problematic in some of those choices, and I’ve spent a lot of time ruminating on those things and wondering what I would do differently,” Redmayne said. “When it came to ‘Cabaret,’ I’d learned my lesson,...

American Idol is responsible for the careers of several A-list acts. There's the show's first-ever winner, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks, and Scotty McCreey, just to name a few. However, the show has also helped launch the careers of those who didn't win. The show provided these runner-ups with a huge platform. It can be said that these singers have become just as big as any Idol winner.
Take, for instance, Adam Lambert, who was Season 8's runner-up after losing out to Kris Allen. After his win, Adam released chart-topping albums and tours as an honorary member of iconic band Queen. No wonder he has a $45 million net worth.
However, what people have also loved about the "Whataya Want From Me" singer is his openness about his health. Adam recently revealed a staggering weight loss that's been making his fans do a double take.

French auteur Jacques Audiard has been flirting with musical moviemaking ever since “Self-Made Hero” in 1996, when he and composer Alexandre Desplat discussed adapting that film into an opera. But it wasn’t until Audiard read a friend’s novel, “Écoute,” that he responded to the idea of a Mexican drug kingpin transitioning to become a woman. In that case the cartel boss was trying to escape from his life, not his gender.
“So the novelist actually introduces this character, but then doesn’t fully develop it,” said Audiard at the Telluride Film Festival, where the Cannes prize-winner “Emilia Pérez” played well at multiple screenings and generated serious Oscar talk going into its September 9 presentation at the Toronto International Festival. “I’m fascinated by the paradox...

Earlier this year, Adam opened up to fans about his 60 pound weight loss.

“I’m dropping some tea on you guys right now. I’ve been on Mounjaro for the last I think, what, eight months?” Adam said in a video shared back in March.
“And I’ve lost almost 60 pounds. I feel amazing. I still eat, but I eat lighter, and I eat less,” Adam continued. “And I know that there’s a lot of chatter about, ‘Oh, you’re taking it away from diabetes patients.’ I mean, quite frankly, that’s the pharmaceutical industry’s issue, not mine. They need to keep up with production.

When Marco Costa joined Luca Guadagnino‘s “Challengers,” the editor was excited because he loves tennis and plays a little himself. “But Luca said to me, ‘My movie is not about tennis. It’s about people,'” Costa tells Gold Derby (watch above). “It was right. This is not a tennis movie. This is not a sport movie, but it’s a movie about people.”
Indeed, tennis merely serves as the court (no pun intended) on which the sexual politics play out. Tashi (Zendaya) is a former prodigy whose career was derailed by a knee injury. She now coaches her husband Art (Mike Faist), a six-time Grand Slam champ who’s been struggling. To get his form back, she enters him in a Challenger, where journeyman player Patrick (Josh O’Connor), his former Bff and and her former boyfriend, looms on the other side of the draw. Their final match serves...

Pete Davidson returned to “Saturday Night Live” on Nov. 2 to appear in a rollicking sketch with his good friend and host, John Mulaney.
The sketch zeroed in on a person asking to buy milk from the cashier at the Port Authority Duane Reade, which locals would consider something to avoid. The bit then erupted into a full-cast celebration parodying several showtunes and New York City-centric topics.
The musical numbers began with a “Lion King” parody about the milk from Kenan Thompson and Ego Nwodim; the shampoo being locked up in a “Sound of Music” spoof from Marcello Hernandez and Mulaney; Bowen Yang as a twisted Greyhound bus driver to the tune of “Master of the House” from “Les Miserables”; “All the twinks arriving for the Timothée Chalamet look-alike contest,” fronted by Chloe Fineman’s impression of the actor, singing a version of “Willkommen” from “Cabaret”; mayor Eric Adams’ potentially illegal associations with Turkey,...

Pete Davidson made a return to “SNL” this weekend for a special occasion: another John Mulaney musical sketch. After the seminal “Diner Lobster,” “Bodega Bathroom” and “Airport Sushi” in previous episodes, this Sunday saw the debut of “Port Authority Duane Reade” which focused not on a single odd item being purchased at the location but a bevy of them.
Davidson and Andrew Dismukes played two men who walked into the Duane Reade at Port Authority, manned by a worker played by Mulaney. But when Davidson asked for a gallon of milk, Mulaney was taken aback.
“You mean the gallon of milk surrounded by cans of Twisted iced tea in the fridge that’s hotter than the store?”
Davidson countered that it said “organic” on the milk jug, but Dismukes corrected him, “No it says organ.”
Davidson was undeterred, so Mulaney acquiesced and opened up the first musical portion of the sketch.

It’s a unique year for sequels and prequels at the Oscars. There are three films whose preceding installments won five or more trophies from the academy: “Dune: Part II,” “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” and “Gladiator II.” That opens the door for history to be made. If one or more of those films wins five times, it will be the first time in history that two films in the same franchise have won that many competitive prizes. For which film is that likeliest to happen? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
