Morgan Freeman once quoted the nautical saying “long foretold, long last; short notice, soon past” to describe his acting career. He meant that it took him along time to achieve success in the acting profession but he hoped his long struggle would mean his career would last and not prove to be just a flash in the pan. His career has lasted and Freeman has had a nearly 30-year film career in major movies.
Freeman’s career started on the New York stage in the musical theater when he took over the role of Rudy the Maître d’ of the restaurant where the famous title number is performed. He was part of the groundbreaking moment when Pearl Bailey led an all-black cast into the production which had been running for years with white performers.
In the 1970s Freeman appeared for seven years and 680 episodes of the children’s television series “The Electric Company.

Marvel characters were depicted in live-action media long before the MCU, contributing to the genre's early days and setting the foundation for today's superhero movies. Some early live-action debuts may not measure up to the MCU, but they played a significant role in turning Marvel's iconic comic book heroes into household names. Some of these early live-action debuts may be outdated by today's standards, but they still deserve recognition for their pioneering efforts.
The MCU may have revolutionized the Superhero genre in TV and cinema, but plenty of Marvel characters were depicted in live-action media way earlier than you might think. In fact, some of Earth's Mightiest Heroes were present on-screen even around the same time as the first-ever comic books. It may have taken 80 years to perfect the formula, but superhero movies and TV shows were a large part of mid-20th-century entertainment - even if noticeably less prolific.

Witnessing an actor adeptly shift between comedy and drama genres is a true audience delight, especially when that actor is closely associated with one particular style. Navigating the comedy domain can be challenging for dramatic actors due to its intricate demands on timing. Comedic performers must comprehend the humor of a situation, while deliberately playing against it, to present a genuine portrayal and nail the joke. While live stage performances benefit from immediate audience reactions, on-screen actors encounter a tougher challenge, lacking the energy from the audience.

In the 20 years of its existence, Shout! Factory has expanded from home entertainment releases into music and theatrical distribution, working with filmmakers as diverse as John Carpenter, Mel Brooks, Roger Corman and Shekhar Kapur. Now, in recognition of its growing mandate, the company is changing its name to Shout! Studios.
The switch marks a two-decade transformation that occurred in a counterintuitively subdued fashion given the company’s emphatic moniker, but perfectly reflects its pedigreed but unassuming origins.

Morgan Freeman is one of cinema's most beloved wise authority figures, but while many believe he's played the President of the United States many times, he really hasn't. Freeman first rose to fame as part of PBS' children's series The Electric Company during the '70s. Despite working steadily in the years that followed, it was his acclaimed turn in Christopher Reeve thriller Street Smart that made his career. From there, he went on to appear in Driving Miss Daisy, The Shawshank Redemption, Seven and many other defining hits.

“It is with profound sadness that on behalf of her family I announce the passing of Irene Cara,” publicist Judith A. Moose wrote. “Her cause of death is currently unknown and will be released when information is available.
Born Irene Cara Escalar in the Bronx borough of New York City to a Puerto Rican father and a Cuban-American mother, she learned to play piano by ear at an early age and soon was taking lessons in music and dance. She was soon making appearances on Johnny Carson’s “The Tonight Show” and became a regular on PBS’ “The Electric Company” in the early 1970s.

Rita Moreno celebrates her 90th birthday and a new remake of ‘West Side Story’ from Steven Spielberg

Rita Moreno celebrates her 90th birthday on December 11. As luck would have it, that’s just one day after the Steven Spielberg remake of “West Side Story” opens nationwide. She won an Oscar as a supporting actress for the original almost 60 years ago and now returns in a new role and as executive producer.
Few performers have had such a varied and successful career as this dynamic triple-threat. The talented actress, singer and dancer is one of only 16 artists to achieve Egot status and one of 23 to achieve the Triple Crown of Acting and one of only two people (with Helen Hayes) to accomplish both.

Moreno was born in Humacao, Puerto Rico in 19831 and moved with her mother to New York City as a small child. By the age of 13, she had her first Broadway role and, before long, she and her mother headed to Hollywood.

The Puerto Rican-born star of the first West Side Story movie reflects on her life, career and traumas in this warm documentary salute
This televisual but still touching documentary tribute to actor Rita Moreno, who turns 90 this month, is released in the UK as a warm-up act to Steven Spielberg’s new film version of West Side Story coming out next month. Moreno is probably most famous for playing Anita in the 1961 film version of the musical, in a zesty, broad performance in which she whips the voluminous folds of her lilac party dress while singing America. It was a turn that earned her the best supporting actress Oscar, and she will be in Spielberg’s new version, too, but Rita-as-Anita in the lilac dress will probably remain the image that most often comes to mind when her name is mentioned.

‘Spider-Man’ TV Star Nicholas Hammond Wasn’t Approached for ‘No Way Home’ — But He Sure Wanted to Be

There is an excellent chance the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home will feature several versions of Spidey from past iterations — but the original actor to play the web-slinger on TV will not be among them. And he is somewhat disappointed about it.
Nicholas Hammond starred as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the 1970s television show The Amazing Spider-Man, based on the iconic Marvel Comics character. And while technically the first U.S. live-action version of Spider-Man appeared in Children’s Television Workshop series The Electric Company, Hammond’s Spidey was the first with storylines.

Rita Moreno may be turning 90 in December, but the actor dreads the thought of being typecast as a woman over a certain age.
“Why should I have to play a grandmother simply because I’m old? Can I be a lawyer? A scientist? So far, the answer is … not so much,” she says wistfully. “Hollywood suffers in a profound way from ageism.”
Moreno has made a career — one that spans seven decades of memorable stage and screen roles in “Singin’ in the Rain,” “The Electric Company,” “The Ritz” and “One Day at a Time” — out of defying expectations and breaking barriers. In 1961, she became the first, and still only, Hispanic woman to win an acting Academy Award, for her turn as Anita in “West Side Story.

Morgan Freeman is one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood, with credits in over 100 films. Despite his extensive filmography, Freeman actually got his start in film relatively late in his career. A frequent stage performer and star of the PBS children's show "The Electric Company," Freeman landed key breakout roles throughout the '80s that launched him into stardom.
Freeman works consistently and is very reliable. Even in weaker films, Freeman rarely gives a bad performance, and is usually a highlight -- sometimes, the only one. He's a very generous actor; Freeman isn't opposed to taking on smaller parts, and is often able to elevate his co-stars....

‘Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It’ Film Review: Documentary Honors a Showbiz Legend

This review of “Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It” was first published at the film’s premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival
For Puerto Rican goddess Rita Moreno, one of the greatest performers — Latina or otherwise — ever to devour our screens with her scintillating talent, the measure of that greatness rests in her career longevity running parallel with integrity. The pedestal of hard-earned success from which she now gazes at Hollywood and its perfidious antics was, at least in the early years, built on perseverance amidst dissatisfaction.
Director Mariem Pérez Riera’s definitive documentary on everything that has colored Moreno’s worldview in nearly nine decades, “Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It,” opens with the dazzling, and often deceiving, glory of her trophies and accolades as she prepares for a Cuban-themed birthday party. As soon as the beloved Egot winner enters the frame,...

“Hey you guys!!!” And at the risk of either being non-inclusive or sexist, “you gals, too”! There’s a new feature-length documentary arriving in theatres this weekend that certainly breaks the preconceived notions of what many consider “film homework”. Yes, there are a considerable amount of “talking heads”, but the movie is far from “dull and dry”. Now, that’s due in large part to the doc’s subject matter (hence all those “talkers” on camera). This is a prime example of this film genre’s popular “subset”, the “show biz” documentary. Last year saw two great entertainment profiles on the Go-Go’s, the Bee Gees, and Natalie Wood. Now, this look at the life and career of one of the latter’s co-stars will no doubt earn similar accolades this year (along with another out today). Speaking of accolades, this lady’s amassed so many, even joining the elite group known as EGOTs.

From Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power” drowning out an announcer to Rita Moreno walking on to the theme of “The Electric Company,” the ‘70s childrens’ TV show in which she starred, there was never any question who was behind the ones and twos at the Oscars on Sunday night: Questlove, Roots co-founder and drummer, musical director of both the Oscars and “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” director of the forthcoming “Summer of Soul” documentary and a walking music Wikipedia.
While his thumbprint was obvious in virtually every music cue on the show, his influence was also obvious in at least one point of the show. Whatever you think you know about Rita Moreno, you barely know the half of it. A lively and illuminating new documentary about the incomparable actress, singer, and dancer proves that no matter how hard any person or industry tries to pigeonhole Rita Moreno, she will surprise at every skirt-flipping turn. The Puerto Rican-American icon may forever be remembered as Anita in “West Side Story,” for which she became the first Latina to win an Oscar, but “Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go For It” reveals much more about her mind-blowing seven-decade career in show business. And from her beginnings in the studio system as a teenager to breaking barriers as a woman of color in Hollywood — it was no cakewalk.
At a breezy but jam-packed 89 minutes, “Just a Girl Who Decided to Go For It” follows Moreno’s life chronologically, and if some chapters feel brief it...

Rita Moreno’s most indelible screen moment, which had her and a “West Side Story” ensemble sizing up the pros and cons of their adopted U.S. homeland, remains an eternally clever musical argument over whether “America” is a dream or nightmare for immigrants, settling in at a 50/50 split. The balance is skewed more along the lines of 80/20, in favor of dream, for the star herself in “Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It.” Premiering at Sundance, the documentary from the theatrical wing of “American Masters” cheerfully jumps from one heartening career reinvention to the next, with sobering lulls to ponder what an even more prolific filmography she might have had without profligate racism and sexism standing in her path.

In the past decade or so, Rita Moreno has received multiple lifetime achievement awards, and would probably receive even more — except that she’s too busy working.
The actress, who turns 89 on Dec. 11, is one of the few people to win an Egot: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. She’s also received the 2004 Presidential Medal of Freedom, the 2009 National Medal of Arts, 2013 SAG Life Achievement Award, Kennedy Center Honors in 2015, and a Peabody Career Achievement in 2019, to name a few.
But she has no intention of resting on her laurels. In “Rita Moreno: A Memoir,” she expresses frustration at not working more. “I still feel that way!” she told Variety shortly after the book came out in 2013. She is always busy: If it’s not film, “I do theater, I do television, concerts, I do talks, lectures, I do a lot of fundraising as a performer.”

Six months after NBC’s “The Good Place” aired its finale, the Television Academy announced nominations for the 2020 Emmy Awards and, in the process, celebrated the series with six nods, including recognition for Outstanding Comedy Series, as well as a nomination — his first — for William Jackson Harper as Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

There are plenty of superstars on television, but only a few icons. Let’s make it clear: Rita Moreno is one of those icons. For kids of my generation, we first knew her as the lady who screamed “Hey you guys!” at the start of PBS’ “The Electric Company.” My parents, of course, knew her as the spitfire in 1961’s “West Side Story.” Now, my kids know her as Lydia, the outspoken grandmother on “One Day at a Time.”
I’ve known Rita Moreno as a legend since the moment I knew what the word meant. Yet that didn’t prepare me for the raucous phone call I had with her early in the Covid-19 pandemic. With production halted on “One Day,” Moreno was back at her house in the Bay Area when I called to get her picks for Variety’s “TV Guilty Pleasure” feature.

Right at the top of John Mulaney’s new Netflix special, the clean-cut comic addresses his audience directly, in order to explain what he’s doing. After all, this isn’t another stand-up set or Broadway play. It’s both. Kind of. It’s an inventive, exciting, and very funny homage to “Mister Rogers Neighborhood,” “The Electric Company,” and more live-action kids’ shows of yesteryear. But it’s also very theatrical, with plenty of scenes taking place on stage and lots and lots of music. Really, “John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch” is an advocacy piece for thinking like a kid again — and Mulaney makes a damn convincing case.

Denise Nickerson, who played the bratty, bloated Violet Beauregarde in 1971’s Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and a sweet-natured orphan bedeviled by ghosts and werewolves on the classic ’60s supernatural soap Dark Shadows, died Wednesday night at a hospital near her home in Colorado.
