The 26 features – including five documentaries and one animation – have shared a total of €7m funding. Fourteen are to be directed by women.

Jack Bannon (Pennyworth) and Douglas Henshall (Shetland, Who is Erin Carter?) are among a group of actors who have joined the drama series The Darkness, starring Oscar nominee Lena Olin (Enemies, A Love Story, Hunters, Chocolat, The Artist’s Wife, Hilma) and directed by Oscar nominee Lasse Hallström (Chocolat, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Hilma).

Also joining the cast of the six-episode English-language series, which is a co-production from CBS Studios and Icelandic production firm Truenorth with Stampede Ventures, are Björn Hlynur Haraldsson (A Gentleman in Moscow), Thorsteinn Bachmann (Katla), Þorvaldur Davíð Kristjánsson (The Minister), Tora Hallström (Hilma), Ahd Tamimi (River City) and Árni Þór Lárusson.

Principal photography is underway in Reykjavík, Iceland, with Paramount Global Content Distribution selling the series outside Iceland.

The series reunites Olin with director Hallström in his first foray into television. The project was first unveiled at Rome’s Mia Market in the fall.

Chocolat and The Cider House Rules director Lasse Hallstrom is making his first foray into TV drama series with Iceland-set mystery thriller The Darkness starring Lena Olin.

Based on the best-selling book by Icelandic author Ragnar Jónasson, the six-part English language series is a co-production between CBS Studios, Stampede Ventures and Iceland’s True North.

Icelandic broadcaster Síminn has boarded the project, which is being sold internationally by Paramount Global Content Distribution. The Darkness is written by Sam Shore, whose credits include Cbbc’s Mystic, and Jónasson serves as executive producer.

CBS Studios is continuing its push into international drama.

Olin stars as Detective Inspector Hulda Hermannsdóttir in the series, based on Ragnar Jónasson’s thriller book series. It follows Hermannsdóttir as she investigates a shocking murder case whilst coming to terms with her own personal traumas. Faced with an impending early retirement and forced to take on a new partner, Hulda is determined to find the killer, even if it means putting her own life in danger.

Sam Shore (Mystic) will write and Lasse Hallström will direct the six-part series. It is produced by CBS Studios and Stampede Ventures, as part of the two companies first-look deal, and Icelandic production company Truenorth. Jónasson serves as executive producer. The series will be distributed outside of Iceland by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

Between "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning," and "Fast X," 2023 might feel like the year of blockbusters blatantly split in half, but one major film beat them all to the punch a few years earlier: 2021's "Dune." Director Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of Frank Herbert's seminal sci-fi/fantasy novel made the conscious choice to only cover the first half of the original book, leaving much of the remaining action for the sequel to worry about. Well, even though "Dune: Part 2" recently ended up delayed by several months well into 2024, we're still finding out more information about the sequel in drips and drabs.

In an awkward example of pre-planned marketing arriving with some exceedingly poor timing, Empire just dropped their shiny new magazine covers commemorating the now later-than-expected release of "Dune: Part 2." “Succession” entered these awards as the top nominee with 14 bids across nine categories, and it came away with more awards than any other program. It prevailed seven times including Best Drama Series (its second victory in that category), Best Drama Actor and Best Drama Actress (first-time winner Sarah Snook). Most of the awards the corporate drama lost were to itself. The only two categories it lost to another show were Best Drama Supporting Actress (Rhea Seehorn won for “Better Call Saul”) and Best Drama Guest Actor (Nick Offerman won for “The Last of Us”).

This was all part of Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts panel on TV Documentaries that included Leah Wolchok (“Judy Blume Forever”), Ryan White, Lucinda Axelsson (“Secrets of the Elephants”), Nikole Hannah-Jones (“The 1619 Project”) and Padma Lakshmi (“Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi”).

Before working on “Pamela, a love story,” director Ryan White admits that there was no one more skeptical about making a Pamela Anderson documentary than him. “I think that’s because, like a lot of people, I had all of these preconceived notions about who Pamela Anderson is or who she would be today and I wasn’t really interested in being a part of that story,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent Meet the Experts: TV Documentary panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). All of that changed for White when he got the chance to have a Zoom session with Anderson. “I was so fascinated with who she appeared to be in this little box in front of me and I thought, ‘Wow. If I’m this surprised right now, if we could show an audience who this woman really is, that could be the recipe for a great documentary.

When Ryan White’s phone jolted to life the morning of July 12, buzzing with texts and calls, the filmmaker wasn’t expecting it. Yes, it was Emmy nomination day, but no, he hadn’t counted on recognition for his Netflix documentary about Pamela Anderson.

Yet there it was, in black and white on the Emmys.com website: For Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, Pamela, A Love Story, about the actress and former Playboy Playmate who swept from Canada onto television screens, magazine covers and scandal sheets in the 1990s.

“I think if you went back two and a half years or three years, whenever I first met Pamela, I think we would’ve both burst into laughter if you had told us that we were going make an Emmy-nominated film,” White says. “That was not the goal at all. And I don’t think either of us thought that was a possibility.

Yesterday in the morning was watching the song from Pyaasa – Ye mehlon ye takhto ye taajon ki duniya, suddenly the news flashed on the screen, ace Design Director, Nitin Desai has committed suicide. I checked the Instagram post, and found Rasul Pookutty in a state of distraught announcing the demise of Nitin Chandrakant Desai.

By the evening the news had spelt like wild fire in the industry, but was there some kind of a mourning for the departed soul? The soul that gave legendary films like 1942-A Love Story, Lagaan, Jodha Akbar and Kbc the realism of location at his studio in Karjat which he had specifically designed to aid the filmmakers shoot films within the vicinity of Mumbai with as diverse and myriad sets that they could imagine.
