During filming of Oberon (Ian Richardson) and Titania (Judi Dench) against a raining backdrop, one of the young men operating the hoses (to simulate rain) was so distracted by the nearly nude beauty of Dench, that he lost track of his hose, which blasted Dench and Richardson into the adjacent lake, from which they had to be rescued by the crew.

Clare Dench (First Fairy) and Emma Dench (Peaseblossom) are the nieces of Judi Dench (Titania).

Helen Mirren (Hermia) later played Titania in A Midsummer Night's Dream (1981).

This was one of the very few theatrical films nominated for an Emmy after being released to theatres in Europe. The same thing happened to Kenneth Branagh's version of As You Like It (2006).

Paul Rogers reprised his role as Bottom from A Midsummer Night's Dream (1958).
