Part of the Jerry Lewis tribute A Mubi Jerrython.Throughout his filmmaking career, Jerry Lewis would re-use food gags. A spoon too full forcefully inserted into an unprepared mouth, the exponential exhaustion faced at a meal never had, the exaggerated despair at food which is unsatisfactory: in these forms of jokes, the crux of Lewis’ relation to food is revealed. Using food consistently as a signifier of domestic comfort, Lewis would throughout his career take up food for emotional as well as comedic emphasis. As Herbert H. Heebert in The Ladies Man (1961), Lewis plays a youth terrified of women after finding his girlfriend has cheated on him. Ending up employed and living in an all-female boarding house, Helen Wellenmellen (Helen Traubel), the house’s owner, explains to her boarders how and why they must keep Herbert employed (a notoriously difficult hotel, they hope to keep him longer than other staff...

Part of the Jerry Lewis tribute A Mubi JerrythonThe boardroom sequence from The Errand Boy (1961) is one of Jerry Lewis’s finest achievements and the video offered here is an effort to highlight some of the features that make it so special. When analysing a film scene, I often find it a useful exercise to import the sequence into iMovie and play with the footage, perhaps altering the soundtrack or cutting it differently. I find this hands-on approach helps me to get to know the sequence more intimately, to discover some of the myriad choices taken in its production and qualities that might otherwise escape notice. In the case of the Lewis routine (which I have written about briefly before1, but wanted to revisit for a forthcoming book about sketch comedy), I found myself going over certain actions that Lewis performs to the Count Basie music, running them backwards and forwards in iMovie,...

Part of the Jerry Lewis tribute A Mubi Jerrython. Writer, director, star of stage, screen and television, humanitarian, producer, and total filmmaker—Jerry Lewis was all of the above. For the first six years of his career he was also a professional lip syncher. At age twelve, desperate to follow his parents on stage, Jerry began developing a “record act.” A staple on the lower rungs of the Borscht Belt, burlesque, vaudeville, and nightclubs, record acts (a.k.a. dummy acts) were cheap and easy: they consisted of a performer or performers miming away to recordings. Always considered pretty corny, they were the poor stepchildren on the theatrical bills, but there were plenty of budding comics who broke into show business that way. Jerry Van Dyke was another newbie who started his career doing record acts, and much later Andy Kaufman would put his own spin on it mouthing only...

Jerry Lewis inspired generations of comedians and comedic filmmakers, as many of immediate tributes in the wake of his death at 91 prove. One of the more recent directors to emerge in American cinema to cite his work is Alex Ross Perry, whose 2011 sleeper hit “The Color Wheel” was a wily black comedy that owed much to Lewis’ madcap performances. Perry’s followup, “Listen Up Phillip,” showed similar influences.
Reached for comment following the news of Lewis’ death, Perry shared the following statement on his relationship to Lewis’ work.
Whenever I would cite Jerry Lewis as an influence, I would qualify the statement by saying he inspired me more as a philosopher than a comedian. The remark would get a laugh but I would elaborate, with total sincerity. The intellectual drive of this man, from the very beginning of his career through his instantly-legendary Hollywood Reporter interview last year (his final masterpiece,...

Quinn O'Hara, the Scottish-born sex kitten who starred in the 1960s movies A Swingin' Summer and The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini, has died. She was 76.
O’Hara had "multiple medical issues" and died Friday at her home in Los Angeles, her friend, Joel B. Gibson, told The Hollywood Reporter.
An attractive redhead, O’Hara also portrayed Jack Lemmon's sexy secretary in Good Neighbor Sam (1964), and Jerry Lewis employed her in three of his films: The Errand Boy (1961), her big-screen debut; Who’s Minding the Store? (1963); and The Patsy (1964).

Since his earliest days, Sliff Lifetime Achievement Award honoree Jerry Lewis had the masses laughing with his visual gags, pantomime sketches, and signature slapstick humor. But Lewis was far more than just a funny performer. After his breakup with partner Dean Martin, he moved behind the camera, writing, producing, and directing many of the adored classics in which he starred. In this double bill, Gregory Monro’s brisk, informative documentary reveals the man behind the clown, and The Nutty Professor provides the proof of Lewis’ comic genius.

Since any New York cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

A movie that’s about movies in the most skewer-happy sense, Joel and Ethan Coen‘s Hail, Caesar! is bound to inspire any number of comparisons and spot-the-reference games among discerning viewers. Not all of these are obvious. Despite the fact that I’m thinking about Jerry Lewis for half of any given day, I can’t say I made the same connections raised in the latest installment of Little White Lies‘ video-essay series, “Under the Influence,” where Adam Cook examines Lewis’ second directorial effort, The Errand Boy, and those curious ways it overlaps with the Coens‘ latest picture. Although the latter is hardly mentioned therein, fans of either should notice commonalities in their respective humor, intents, and scopes, even past the obvious fact of being set at movie studios. If nothing else, keep these in mind as a very fine double-feature to hold at home.

A true Renaissance man, well recognized as one of the greatest comedians in the history of the field, Jerry Lewis helped define so much of comedy’s vast language as a stand-up performer, actor, producer and writer. Perhaps his greatest innovation was as a filmmaker. Taken together, movies such as The Bellboy, The Ladies Man, The Errand Boy, The Nutty Professor, The Patsy, and The Family Jewels form a breathtaking virtual dictionary of every aspect of what is important and essential to the language of comedic film. In all of Frank Tashlin’s work, there is nothing quite so boldly staged as the delirious sequence in 1961′s The Ladies Man, in which Jerry Lewis, the film’s director and Tashlin’s nominal pupil, deconstructs a panic attack in twenty five seconds. Framed inside an enormous set that resembles the interior of a gargantuan and painstakingly detailed dollhouse, Lewis’ character, a terrified schlemiel by the name of Herbert H. Heebert, is in the midst of a mad dash up the set’s elaborate staircase when suddenly he’s literally beside himself with fright, splitting into two, then three, then four similarly fearstruck replicants, zig-zagging about the hallways until they all disappear one after another into the safety of their bedroom, the door slamming in quick succesion with four emphatic bangs. No, there was nothing close to this deft and dizzy blend of Psychology 101 and slapstick in Tashlin’s portfolio,...

Warner Home Video, in association with Paramount Pictures, is commemorating the 50th anniversary of Jerry Lewis' "The Nutty Professor" with the release of a deluxe Blu-ray gift set. The film is understandably Lewis' personal favorite- and with good reason. His clever comedic take on the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde legend remains a remarkably inventive and funny film, with Lewis not only in the director's chair, but also giving a tour-de-force performance as the nerdy academic who manages to transform himself into a different kind of "monster"- a suave lady's man with a huge ego and no regard for the people in his life. In a personal letter included in the set, Lewis states: "This is a very special film with a lot of heart and soul. I thoroughly enjoyed the writing, directing, acting, editing, scoring and extensive promotion of the film. It is what I always dreamed...

If the mid-career of Jerry Lewis — the post–Dean Martin era, the years of films like The Nutty Professor, The Disorderly Orderly, and The Errand Boy — is often treated as a joke, the actor-director's late career may as well be a bitter punch line. To get a really derisive snort, just mention The Day the Clown Cried, Lewis's 1972 film about a clown in a Nazi concentration camp, which has never seen the light of day. Lewis himself has said, "You will never see it. No one will ever see it, because I am embarrassed at the poor work."

The potion turns Kelp into smooth nightclub singer Buddy Love, and works beautifully to draw in Stella, but the unstable formula makes Love slip back into Kelp at the most embarassing moments.

Johnny Depp hopes that The Lone Ranger will make Native American kids feel proud about their culture.
The actor - who will portray Tonto in the Disney film - has discussed the misrepresentation of Native American people throughout their history.
"Ever since I was a kid, watching The Lone Ranger series on TV, I always had a fascination with the series. I loved Jay Silverheels," Depp told David Letterman.
"But I was always sort of perturbed somehow by the fact Tonto was thought of as the sidekick. The errand boy, it just didn't sit well. So it's been something I've felt very passionate about for a long time.
"And the idea that Native Americans have been misrepresented horribly throughout the history of cinema and television, so I thought it was a great opportunity to flip that cliché on its head and bring the respect back to these people… these dignified people.

Jerry Lewis Max Rose panned: Cannes Film Festival 2013 Jerry Lewis and Charles Chaplin both made comedies. What else do they have in common? One possible answer: Claire Bloom, Chaplin’s Limelight "discovery" (Bloom had already been featured in the 1948 British drama The Blind Goddess) and Lewis’ leading lady in Max Rose. Comedian Jerry Lewis has signed a deal with Artificial Intelligence Entertainment and Social Capital Films to remake three of his most successful comedies from his heyday in the 60's reports Variety.
The companies have acquired remake rights from Lewis to the titles in Lewis' Paramount library which were given back to him in the 1970's. They plan to develop contemporary remakes of "The Bellboy," "Cinderfella" and "The Family Jewels" with each to be considered as a potential franchise for a major comedy star.
Christopher Tuffin, John Baca and George Paige will produce while Lewis will serve as co-executive producer on the films. Tuffin says "What we're aiming to do is combine the spirit of the originals with a modern sensibility."
"The Bellboy" is a slapstick piece following a dysfunctional bellboy who runs amok in a five-star hotel. "Cinderfella" is a comedy version of the Cinderella story with several of the roles reversed.

"Laaa-dy."
Can anyone ever duplicate that immortal whine Jerry Lewis uttered in his wacky 1963 comedy 'Who's Minding the Store'?
Artificial Intelligence Entertainment and Social Capital Films think so. They've just acquired remake rights from Lewis to 'The Bellboy,' 'Cinderfella,' 'The Family Jewels,' 'The Errand Boy,' 'The Patsy' and 'Who's Minding the Store,' with an immediate emphasis on bringing to the big screen the first three titles.
All those films were made in the 1960s, when Lewis was at his peak -- from 1961 to 1964 he was the No. 1 box office draw in America.

It's bad enough to be dating when you're middle aged. But in the new comedy Cyrus, poor John (John C. Reilly) is trying to start up a relationship with the warm, smart, beautiful Molly (Marisa Tomei) and having to deal with her clingy, fully grown son, Cyrus (Jonah Hill). It's hard enough to win over a manipulative toddler, pretty much impossible when the kid's old enough to drink and drive, not to mention his mom's best friend.
While Cyrus may not be your typical 21-year-old, he's got plenty of big-screen company — not surprising, really, given the comedy gold of immature hijinks fueled by disposable income (and reality). From these swollen man-child ranks, we've picked our favorites.
