With “Star Trek,” he’s one of the most beloved science-fiction creators of all time. But Gene Roddenberry took his first stab at sci-fi almost a decade earlier, by pitching an episode titled “The Transporter” — a name that certainly resonates with “Star Trek” fans — to the anthology series “Science Fiction Theatre” in 1955.
IndieWire exclusively presents that original pitch document, with pencil corrections in Roddenberry’s own handwriting, that the TV writer, then just starting out, sent to series executives. The Roddenberry estate believes this document to be his first-ever attempt at writing science-fiction. It’s like seeing the first-ever attempt at dripping paint on canvas by Jackson Pollack.
This document will be discussed in detail on the October 26 episode of the “Gene-ology” podcast, which is devoted to the life and times of the man nicknamed “The Great Bird of the Galaxy” and is produced by Roddenberry Entertainment.

Back in 1964 a lot of people still thought dolphins were fish, but by the time this TV show was finished, we all knew that our happy undersea friend was smarter than the average bear and lives in a world full of wonder. Ivan Tors’ grandly successful Florida-shot family show kept a lot of seagoing movie veterans in green seaweed, including both original ‘Creature’ Gill Men.

I love all things Body Snatcher. Every remake, every attempt at incorporating the core elements into other flavors of horror, and every pop culture reference, ever. There, I said it. Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and especially the ’78 version, is up there with Night of the Living Dead for me, as one of the most important horror films of our time. I love the ’56 version as well, but this is every bit as good, and in some ways better, and I saw it first, when I was a kid, so it holds a special place in my heart. This is another horror movie that existed on Blu-ray prior to Scream Factory’s release, but it existed as such a barebones vanilla MGM/Fox Home Video release, that I squeed with glee when I read that Scream Factory would be giving it their Collector’s Edition treatment.

Among the crown jewels of Scream Factory’s ever-growing library of classic horror titles on Blu-ray (and some not-so-classic) are their Vincent Price Collection boxed sets, collecting many of the icon’s greatest films including most of the Roger Corman “Poe cycle”, as well as other goodness like the Dr. Phibes movies and the brilliant Witchfinder General. Not only do these collections celebrate one of the greatest icons the genre has ever known, but also honor a kind of old-school horror of which we don’t see enough anymore.
But by the recently released Vincent Price Collection III, the third collection of Price movies on Blu-ray, Scream Factory has had to dig up some fairly esoteric titles, not all of which can be considered horror. Tall, dark, handsome...and mechanical!: It's The Colossus of New York.
The Colossus of New York, the 1958 sci-fi thriller classic, takes its place in the pantheon of such great killer robot movies as The Terminator, RoboCop and Demon Seed.Â
Written by Thelma Schnee (TV’s Science Fiction Theatre) from Willis Goldbeck’s story, the intriguing film turns on the accidental death of a brilliant scientist (Ross Martin), a tragedy that prompts his lunatic father (Otto Kruger) and brother (John Baragrey) to transplant the dead man’s brain onto the body of a giant robot. The operation is successful, but the Colossus Robot mourns for his wife and child and doesn’t want to be the guinea pig in his father’s psychotic project and starts displaying homicidal behaviors.
Olive issued the movie on DVD in May, 2011.

Where could this mesmerizing photo come from?
The answer exists and Joe has it below. But, first, just look at this magical image. Just look at it!
So…from where could this evocatively arty still originate?
Surely it’s a Euro Art Film!
Is it…Last Year at Desert Rock by the Italian auteur Giacomo Arnoldo?
Well… no. But almost.
It’s actually a memorable visual from a 100% Amurkan Hollywood movie– Jack Arnold’s 1953 3-D classic It Came from Outer Space.
I was fortunate enough to get to know Jack during the 70s, as his daughter Susan was the casting director of Piranha, The Howling and Gremlins. She had also acted for her dad (along with Piranha star Belinda Balaski) in the Fred Williamson vehicle Black Eye as well as Al Adamson’s The Female Bunch. Truth be known, I had kind of a crush on Susan during Piranha, but...

Creator of film special effects who turned an 18-inch model ape into King Kong
In the history of cinema, many children have followed their mothers or fathers into the film business, but few offspring pursued the path of a parent more slavishly than Harry Redmond Jr, who has died aged 101. Like a master craftsman, Harry Redmond Sr passed on the skills of his trade to his son, the trade being the creation of special effects for films. Most notably, they worked together on King Kong (1933), in which a giant gorilla captures an actor, Ann Darrow, played by the "scream queen" Fay Wray.
The Redmonds were important members of the King Kong technical team under the supervision of Willis O'Brien, the pioneer of model animation. Part of their job was to integrate the stop-motion models and animatronics into live-action sequences by means of back projection and travelling mattes. Although the model...

Gene Barry was a suave leading man in films and television from the 1950s. He was best known for his starring role as Dr. Clayton Forrester in George Pal’s 1953 film adaptation of H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds. Several years later he again faced alien invaders in the underrated sci-fi film The 27th Day (1956).
He was born Eugene Klass in New York City on June 14, 1919. He began his career as a singer in nightclubs and variety shows, and was appearing on the Broadway stage in the early 1940s. He made his film debut in the 1952 sci-fi/spy thriller The Atomic City.
Barry was also a familiar face on television from the early 1950s. He starred as the dapper western lawman William Barclay `Bat’ Masterson in the Bat Masterson series from 1958 to 1961. Barry also starred as Captain Amos Burke, the suave Los Angeles Chief of Detectives who would arrive...
