CineSavant poaches on Greenbriar Picture Shows territory with a quick slideshow of photos from New Yawk, New Yawk, where once upon a time, any old film release might get a gigantic ‘your name in lights’ opening on the Great White Way.
This photo idea won’t be a trend at CineSavant, but it is a welcome break. It came about because long-time correspondent ‘B’ wanted to assure me that some movies I had described as marginal, actually opened big in New York. To prove to me that the Louis De Rochemont social issue movie Lost Boundaries wasn’t a micro-release seen by nearly nobody (which seems to be the fate of so many pictures today), “B” sent along this color photo of the gigantic electric billboard at the Astor Theater, presumably in early July of 1949.

Joanna Gaines has been making the rounds to promote her new Matilda Jane girls' clothing collection, and during an interview with Et this week, the subject turned to celebrities. During the chat, the Fixer Upper star revealed her husband Chip's famous man crush. "Chip loves Ryan Reynolds. I'm sure he has a man crush on him. He likes to go back and forth with Scott Foley," Joanna said, adding, "There are a few people every now and then I will hear him gasp, 'Look who just tweeted me.' It still doesn't feel real. We are just Chip and Joanna in Waco, TX." Joanna and Chip have been married for 13 years and have four adorable kids. It seems as though Chip's feelings for Ryan could be mutual, as the two have exchanged tweets before. @VancityReynolds @TheMagnoliaMom I'm more nervous about how to respond to this, than i was typing my first tweet.

They say that a gaffe is the act of telling the truth by accident, and in a moment of candor Sunday, Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Florida let slip his true feelings about illegal immigration. Rubio has been trying to cast himself as a born-again opponent of amnesty, but like other Republican squishes like Jeb "Act of Love" Bush, Rubio doesn't view illegal immigration as a serious crime.

Directed by Max Bartoli and Fabiola Lopez Batoli, "The Secret of Joy" is a $500K short project created to support the cause of pediatric cancer. Their noble endeavor inspired a great number of talented industry people to get on board as part of the production, and after lots of passionate work they are finally ready to share with audiences in hopes that it will not only raise awareness, but also tangible funds to be donated to the Kids’ Cancer Research Foundation.
Director Max Bartoli talks more in depth about this project below:
Cancer has unfortunately already touched my family too many times, and more recently two couple of friends lost their 4 y.o and 5 y.o. children to neuroblastoma a few months apart, thus motivating me to do something to raise awareness and funds to support the battle against this terrible disease. It is with this in mind that my wife and I decided to invest all our savings to produce "The Secret of Joy," a project made of a 12-minute short, a book and a song, three products which will be donated non-exclusively to the Kids’ Cancer Research Foundation (www.endkidscancer.org) and to three European hospitals as extra tools to raise the awareness over this topic and fundraise during their future campaigns.
When we talked about this project to our friends in Hollywood we received enthusiastic reactions. A 35-people-cast, led by 4 times Emmy winner Doris Roberts ("Everybody Loves Raymond," "Remington Steele," "Christmas Vacation"), Maria Conchita Alonso ("The Running Man," "Saints & Sinners," "The House of the Spirits") and Sofia Milos ("CSI Miami"), and a 65-people-crew from 3 continents led by super talented Production Designer Giles Masters ("Angels and Demons," "The Mummy," "The Da Vinci Code") accepted to bring our story to life for free.
Shot last December in Los Angeles, "The Secret of Joy" has become in 6 months the Act Of Love of over 150 entertainment professionals and several companies (Technicolor, Red, Cameras, Hammerhead Productions., Tirelli Costumes and many others) whose contribution amounted to over $450,000 (four hundred and fifty thousand dollars), all united by the desire to support a cause which involves our children, our future and still seems to have been forgotten by the media and the audience.
This to demonstrate, if it was needed, that Hollywood often gives more than what it takes. My wife and I embarked in this project hoping to bring hope and a smile into the lives of the children battling cancer and of their families. Having two of them, Casey and Chloe, on set and seeing the joy on their faces as we were filming would be already enough to repay us of our endeavors. But we want more. We want to reach out and touch many more.
That’s why from August 28th until September 3rd "The Secret of Joy" will be screened at the Laemmle 7 theater in North Hollywood and the whole Box Office will be donated to the Kids’ Cancer Research Foundation. It’ll be an important first step to achieve our goal.
We would love for it to be successful. We know we can make the difference, touching one person’s heart at the time.

Nominations for the 41st Annual Annie Awards were announced and "Frozen" and "Monsters University" led the pack with 10 nominations each. "Despicable Me 2" and "The Croods" followed closely with 9 noms each.
I am rooting for "Frozen" to win! It's a return to form to what Disney does best -- affecting fairy tale with memorable musical numbers. "Monsters University," on the other hand, was bland. The film bored me on second viewing.
Steven Spielberg will receive the Winsor McCay Award for career achievement at the awards ceremony happening on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. Patrick Warburton will serve as host.

Kirk Douglas movies: The Theater of Larger Than Life Performances Kirk Douglas, a three-time Best Actor Academy Award nominee and one of the top Hollywood stars of the ’50s, is Turner Classic Movies’ "Summer Under the Stars" featured star today, August 30, 2013. Although an undeniably strong screen presence, no one could ever accuse Douglas of having been a subtle, believable actor. In fact, even if you were to place side by side all of the widescreen formats ever created, they couldn’t possibly be wide enough to contain his larger-than-life theatrical emoting. (Photo: Kirk Douglas ca. 1950.) Right now, TCM is showing Andrew V. McLaglen’s 1967 Western The Way West, a routine tale about settlers in the Old American Northwest that remains of interest solely due to its name cast. Besides Douglas, The Way West features Robert Mitchum, Richard Widmark, Lola Albright, and 21-year-old Sally Field in her The Flying Nun days.
