If you missed one of 2023’s more underrated horror movies, we’ve got great news: Universal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter is heading to streaming next month.
Look for The Last Voyage of the Demeter to arrive on Paramount+ with Showtime on February 11, 2024.
Directed by André Øvredal (The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark), this latest Dracula movie leaves the comedy of Renfield behind for a classic, Hammer-style horror movie at sea. The film is an adaptation of a single passage from Bram Stoker’s classic horror novel, known as “The Captain’s Log,” which has never been adapted like this before.
The film is “based on a single chapter, the Captain’s Log, from Bram Stoker’s classic 1897 novel Dracula. The chapter tells the story of the Russian schooner, Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo – twenty four unmarked wooden crates – from Carpathia to London.

IndieWire reached out to the cinematography nominees for the 75th Emmy Awards (Emmys). Once again, we used the data to build a chart and find tendencies. It seems that Sony takes the lead with the Venice. Also, it’s a nice surprise to explore the Kinefinity Mavo Edge and the Blackmagic Ursa 12K in that prestige list. Furthermore, there’s a solid presence of Red too.

Toward the end of last year, it was announced that The Conjuring 4 is in the works at New Line Cinema, with James Wan and Peter Safran producing and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who previously worked on the scripts for The Conjuring 2 and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, writing the screenplay. Wan has previously hinted that The Conjuring 4 could turn out to be the last film in the franchise… and if it is, it has a fitting title for a final installment. While at CinemaCon, the official convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners, Warner Bros. revealed that the next movie is titled The Conjuring: Last Rites.
Nothing is known about the plot at this time, and the movie also doesn’t have a director attached to it at the moment.
The title reveal for The Conjuring: Last Rites isn’t the only bit of promotion Warner Bros.

The horror comedy Renfield isn’t the only Dracula movie Universal Pictures will be releasing this year. Completely unrelated to Renfield (so don’t expect Nicolas Cage to show up in it) is their August 11th theatrical release The Last Voyage of the Demeter, which is based on a single chapter, the Captain’s Log, from Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula. Directed by André Øvredal, The Last Voyage of the Demeter stars (according to The Hollywood Reporter) “Corey Hawkins as a doctor aboard the Demeter, Aisling Franciosi as an unwitting stowaway, Liam Cunningham as the ship’s captain, and David Dastmalchian as the Demeter’s first mate. The ensemble cast includes Jon Jon Briones, Stefan Kapicic, Nikolai Nikolaeff, and Javier Botet.” And during a recent interview with Collider, cast member Dastmalchian promised the movie is going to “scare the crap out of people”.

The Singaporean film industry is experiencing an unprecedented production boom. At least 14 homegrown films are due to release this year, a 50% increase from 2018, with another 15 in development, per the Singapore Film Commission.
Last year saw unprecedented success for Singapore cinema, with Yeo Siew Hua’s “A Land Imagined” winning the Golden Leopard at Locarno, and several more awards globally. The film was released theatrically in Singapore in February 2019 and enjoyed a successful box office run. Jon M. Chu’s Singapore-set blockbuster “Crazy Rich Asians” led to a global uptick in interest in the island country; auteur Eric Khoo’s culinary themed “Ramen Shop” won plaudits at Berlin and Tokyo; and locally, horror films from Gilbert Chan (“23:59: The Haunting Hour”) and Jacen Tan (“Zombiepura”) found favor with audiences.
Local superstar Jack Neo had a 2018 Lunar New Year release with comedy “Wonderful! Liang Xi Mei” from regional powerhouses MM2 Entertainment and J Team Prods.

Bela Lugosi fan alert! This Monogram horror opus is yet another narrative-challenged fumble of unmotivated, incomprehensible characters… but Bela’s great in it, in a central role. He’s a sympathetic, non- maniac this time, if you don’t count his tendency to go into trances and smother random houseguests. Savant’s review has the lowdown on the interesting cast; Tom Weaver’s commentary has the authoritative lowdown on whole show.

Next week at Tfh we're featuring a modest tribute to Bela! ... Lugosi, of course. The films include Invisible Ghost (helmed by Gun Crazy's Joseph H. Lewis), 1947's Scared To Death, and the subject of today's Saturday Matinee, Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla. The sole reason for the existence of Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla is Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. If anything, that considerably narrows down the blame for this 74 minute pleasure-killer from 1952. It was at the height of Martin and Lewis' extraordinary success in the early fifties (each appearance was a near riot, on stage and off, a bobbysoxer's version of Beatlemania) that a motley collection of crooners and comics rushed in to steal some of the limelight. None were so brazen (or motley) than the team of Duke Mitchell and Sammy Petrillo. Mitchell was an erstwhile lounge singer with a predilection for imitating smooth...

Justin’s latest run-in with the law could be the subject of several ‘SNL’ sketches, HollywoodLife.com has learned.
As serious as a DUI arrest may be, the internet has been having a field day in the wake of Justin Bieber‘s incarceration — and the jokes have only just begun! In fact, HollywoodLife.com has learned Exclusively that Saturday Night Live writers are already working feverishly to add Justin-related content to this weekend’s episode.
“The writers are scrambling to do a Justin Bieber Wolf of Wall Street-type skit on his troubles as the cold open, and Seth Meyers is definitely adding stuff to ‘Weekend Update,’” our insider tells us. “They’re definitely going to make one of their main skits about the arrest.”
This certainly wouldn’t be the first time Justin found himself a target of SNL‘s jokes.

Ravenswood recap: “Scared to Death” By Aleina McGettrick In last week’s episode of Ravenswood we left off with Miranda (Nicole Gale Anderson) leaving with the ghost of her mother to an unknown place. Although we all wish this was her happy ending, we know it definitely is not. This week, on the midseason finale of Ravenswood, the show started out with Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) having a sort of dream of where Miranda was. She was shown in a room with her mother and father and a strange little girl — her parents claimed that the girl was wondering by herself … Continue reading →

1.5 Scared To Death
In the mid-season finale of Ravenswood, we finally learn the truth abou Caleb and Miranda's doppelgangers and get a surprise dropped on our heads.
I have to preface this review with the one negative thing I have to say about the series thus far. I'd rather get it out of the way now so that we can talk about the delicious, campy goodness that this episode had in store for us and end on a high note.
I have to wonder how many people are watching Ravenswood who haven't seen its parent show, Pretty Little Liars. I would dare to venture that the answer is "not many." Accordingly, those viewers have had years to get used to Caleb and Hanna's relationship. It's not a "shipping" thing,...

"Ravenswood" threw an interesting character into the mix in its midseason finale, "Scared to Death." Meet Max (Isabel Myers), who we're pretty sure is some kind of middleman for the devil. Yikes.
We hope to see more of her, she's terrifically scary and we can't wait to find out what she's up to with Dylan.
Here are Max's creepiest moments from "Scared to Death" -- the one of her looking under the bed is our favorite. What were your favorite moments in the "Ravenswood" midseason finale?...
We hope to see more of her, she's terrifically scary and we can't wait to find out what she's up to with Dylan.

The midseason finale of "Ravenswood" offered some excellent scares -- pee-your-pants good, so don't make fun. Just like Olivia said.
The Curse
For a minute, we really thought the show killed off Caleb Rivers and we were actually super-pumped. Not because we want him to die, of course, but just ... that's such a bold dramatic choice. Sure, Miranda's a main character too, but not in the same way. That would've been incredibly daring.
But Caleb is Ok. And we're fine with that too. What we're more interested in is the fact that the little girl Max and Dylan appear to be some kind of minions for the devil. The show doesn't explicitly say that, but Max's "in Hell" comment and the duplicitous ghosts of Miranda's parents and Dylan saying "he" won't be pleased -- all signs point to the devil, which makes "Ravenswood" 1000x scarier than "Pll" ever could be.

"Ravenswood" is ending the first half of Season 1 Tuesday night (Nov. 19) with "Scared to Death." Star Brett Dier teases for Zap2it that they shot at a haunted house and that he wishes he could be part of a flashback.
"The place where we're shooting in was actually pretty spooky. It was a mansion and I don't think anybody lived there for a long time. ... I wandered around in the house by myself and I was really scared," says Dier. "It kind of looks like the 'Addams Family,' that mansion. We shoot in there a lot. There's a lot of action [there] in episode 5."
Norman Buckley, who directed the episode, posted this photo (right) to Tumblr along with the caption, "Be careful where you go." Perhaps that is a clue to what Dier is talking about?
But anyway, part of the action in episode 5 stems from the "Scooby Gang," as Tyler Blackburn calls them,...

"Ravenswood" is wrapping up the first half of Season 1 on Tuesday, Nov. 19 with "Scared to Death," which star Nicole Gale Anderson teases for Zap2it will feature the gang in a race to save Miranda and a creepy little girl who is not what she seems.
"The next episode basically starts off with Miranda waking up in this amazingly perfect dream home with her mom and her dad and this cute little girl named Max and everything seems picture-perfect," says Anderson. "But what she doesn't know is that it isn't quite what it appears to be."
"Caleb, it comes to him in a dream, he quickly starts to piece together all the clues he found within that box from the last episode and the four Ravenswood kids try to figure out the clues to find Miranda."

"Ravenswood" is bringing an action-packed midseason finale next week with "Scared to Death," which Britne Oldford teases for Zap2it what is happening with Remy and her sleepwalking problem moving forward.
"The dreams that she's having are definitely affecting her physically. Not too much mentally, but she's growing very weary and very tired," says Oldford. "Her sleepwalking does definitely evolve and you'll see why she's sleepwalking, what happens when she's sleepwalking and it really comes to a head, actually, when we come back. So we'll have to see what happens."
In addition to her sleep problem, Remy also has one of the parents on the show who seems to be more than perhaps he or she is letting on. But is Remy's dad in on the curse?
"I think that Simon Beaumont has some sort of an idea as to why the town is the way it is," says Oldford.

"Ravenswood" is coming to a midseason close next Tuesday and Tyler Blackburn tells Zap2it that "Haleb" fans might not be too happy.
"I can't say for sure if [Hanna and Caleb] break up or not, but things won't be the same, let's just say that," says Blackburn. "It's a very delicate situation because a lot has transpired in Ravenswood for Caleb, a lot that he wants to keep secret from her. That definitely puts him in a sticky situation."

Last week's Castle featured Kevin Ryan balking at a possibly cursed DVD. But the stakes get considerably more dangerous for the detective in "The Wild Rover" when he goes undercover with the Staten Island mob.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Seamus Dever about the peril his alter ego will be facing, which of his coworkers can't keep their hands off his wife and what is in store on episode 100 of the ABC hit...
It sounds like Detective Ryan is doing some undercover work in the next episode. What can you tell us about that?
So basically, before Kevin Ryan was a homicide cop he was a narcotics cop and one of things that he did was go undercover. It was sort of one of these things were he spent 14 - 15 months in the Staten Island mob, gaining their trust. Getting to know people and getting people to trust him.

"Scared to Death" brought one of the creepiest killing methods together with some of the funniest scenes of Castle Season 5.
Below, our Castle Round Rable team of Chandel Charles, Jim Garner, and Christine Orlando are joined by Castle fan Amanda from The 12th Fan Forum to ponder who was the biggest scaredy cat at the precinct and which celebrities made our bucket lists.
-------------------------------------------
What was your favorite scene?
Amanda: I loved the scene at the end where Kate saw Castle's "bucket list" from three years ago and learned that his number one was to be with her. Super sweet and romantic!
Chandel: Probably when Castle initially watched the deadly DVD. His face at the end, upon realizing the consequences was really worth a screenshot.
Jim: I liked Espo backing up Ryan on not watching the DVD. Tried to act all tough, but dude was afraid.

Welcome back, TV Fanatics! After a few weeks off, Castle returned with "Scared to Death," a lighthearted episode to follow up the intense two-parter we had just enjoyed.
Ready to discuss?
The Ring? On a fun play off of “The Ring” movie, the weekly case dealt with the death of victims who had received a mysterious package containing an evil DVD. Not going to lie, kinda freaked me out a bit. I definitely asked myself, “are they showing these clips again??"
I can’t blame Espo and Ryan for not wanting to watch it either! Leave it to the genius of Rick Castle to figure out such an odd link between the victims. This was an enjoyable hour filled with laughs to follow up from "Hunt."
The only thing that threw me was that there was no mention of what they had just been through. Not a word about Alexis or his father.

Do you like scary movies? How about scary episodes of "Castle" focusing on horror-movie tropes like "Scared to Death"? If the answer is yes, then the episode airing on Monday (March 18) was definitely the one for you. Filled from beginning to end with spine-tingling moments straight out of the supernatural realm, "Scared to Death" was good, scary fun.
But how many horror-movie tropes did "Castle" manage to cram into a single episode?
A haunted DVD: I have never watched "The Ring" (neither the Japanese nor the American version). The creepy images and the promise of death? That is exactly why.Useless calls to the police: The first murder victim called 911. It didn't do any good. It never does...Power outages: When the lights go out, you know you're done for.Deaths at midnight: All the best scary murders happen at midnight. The creepy inn: Sure, it was the off-season. But...

You'd think that a murder would be sufficient evil for a mystery like "Castle." In the upcoming episode, "Scared to Death," however, we get the possibility of evil ghosts haunting their victims to death. Is Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) about to be the next target of these malicious spirits?
All seems basically fine in the first video -- you know, other than the corpse. Seriously, that is one freaky dead body. The instant association with "scared to death" works very well. Also, if the victim were not scared of evil spirits of some nature, what's with all of the supernatural paraphernalia?
As the second video shows, Castle has decided that ghosts are most definitely to blame in the murder of the week.
It may not be ghosts, of course. Plenty of other horror-movie monsters and psycho killers are willing to choose their victims based on recent sexual escapades. Castle might...

Can a person be scared to death? Are haunted videos real? These are questions that the "Castle" episode, "Scared to Death" asks. Even the photos from this one are creepy.
Before you get too worried, we can assure you that this is not one of those serious, dark episodes of "Castle." It's instead a silly, dark episode of the show! The presence of Wes Craven as a guest star helps to prove that.
The case begins with the death of a young woman. She appears to have been literally scared to death.
Of course, Castle (Nathan Fillion) can't ignore something like death by fear. Is this book responsible?
The evidence actually points more in the direction of a "haunted" DVD that the victim watched three days before her death. Castle watches this video as well. Does that mean he is next?
In the meantime, the victim's roommate (guest star Vivian Kerr) comes home.

Following the conclusion to this week's Castle Season 5 two-parter, fans likely need a breather.
They need a break from all the action, which included Alexis being kidnapped and, of course, the introduction of James Broslin as Rick's father.
With that in mind, the ABC hit is off the air until March 18. On that date, we'll be treated to "Scared to Death," a new episode that freaks Castle and Beckett out after a woman appears to have died after watching a "haunted" DVD.
Even more frightening? When Castle accidentally watches the same film and worries he will suffer from the same fate. Uh-oh!

Peter Pan (Diamond Edition) Disney is releasing their classic animated adaptation of Peter Pan on Blu-ray this week and looking over the complete selection of titles hitting shelves today this really looks to be the best of the lot. House of Cards Trilogy: The Original UK Series Along with releasing the new miniseries "House of Cards" on Netflix Instant last Friday, Netflix also has the complete original BBC adaptation streaming online. So why would you spend money to buy the Blu-ray edtion? I really don't know, but it's coming out and I've heard it's great. So if you can find the time, maybe stroll on over to Netflix and add it to your queue as well or if you have deep pockets purchase it.

“Maybe I was straitjacketing myself because even back when I was doing Tulsa or Teenage Lust, I wouldn't go see movies about teenagers. I wouldn't look at books if they were about teenagers, because I was afraid that either I would be influenced or that someone had already done something that I had done, or someone was doing it better. Scared to Death opened this week in 1947, and stars Bela Lugosi in his only color film. Full disclosure here, I haven’t seen it, but after reading the plot description I am intrigued. It revolves around a beautiful young woman who has literally died of fright; she also narrates the backstory. The story boasts several curious elements including a hypnotist played by Lugosi who shows up with a mini me at his side, a death mask, and a Nazi subplot.
