The year the action takes place is never explicitly stated in the film, but a few hints courtesy of the character Kate place it in 1890. She refers to "A Hazard of New Fortunes" by William Dean Howells, originally published that year, as "a new book". She also refers to the Reginald De Koven opera "Robin Hood", which premiered the same year, as new.
