Did Brad Pitt want to play Jeff Buckley in a biopic? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Brad Pitt once had plans to star as the late musician Jeff Buckley in a biopic nearly two decades ago. In 2000, after inviting Buckley’s mother, Mary Guibert, to his wedding to Jennifer Aniston, Pitt sought her permission to portray her son on screen, and although initially she agreed, she later had second thoughts.

Ever wanted to own a lock of Leonard Cohen’s hair? Now’s your chance, thanks to an upcoming auction featuring dozens of items once belonging to the iconic singer-songwriter.
Julien’s Auction House has announced an upcoming sale of 164 items culled from the collections of the late musician’s romantic partner Anjani Thomas and longtime friend Aviva Layton, among others.
Along with such mementos as lyric sheets, photos, personal letters, artwork, a couple of hats, and more, perhaps the most interesting artifact is a lock of Cohen’s hair, housed in a locket.
Thomas told Rolling Stone of the lock of hair, “We were cutting his hair one day, and he had just given me a locket for my birthday. And I thought it was a traditional thing to put a snippet of hair in a locket. It’s a very olden-times custom.”

In 1964, Leonard Cohen wrote a letter to a friend explaining that he’d sold what he called his manuscript “junk” to the University of Toronto, who shelled out $3,850 for the collection. How times have changed, especially in the rock memorabilia world. Next month, an auction of Cohen’s working drafts, correspondence and other items will include that letter, which auction organizers predict will likely go for multiples of that amount.

At one point in singer-songwriter Jeff Buckely’s promising career, the musician exclaimed on MTV that he sees himself as a parasite in an industry he’s long admired. Not quite a household name in the United States, the Southern California native found an immense following in Europe and other countries that seemed to gravitate towards his unique sound developed while playing in New York nightclubs in his early 20s. At a time in the 1990s when grunge music became popular, Jeff Buckley’s eclectic brand and distinctive voice was cut short when he drowned in Memphis at the tender age of 30.
Much has been written about the musician who only gave the world one studio album, “Grace.” Often regarded for his covers of previously well-known songs, Buckley is best remembered for his take on the Leonard Cohen hit, “Hallelujah,” notable for Buckley’s interpretation of the song as more sexually based than gospel hymn.

The human voice, as we all know, is as much of a musical instrument as any other instrument. But Jeff Buckley had a voice that was so breathtaking, so ethereally soaring, so reaching for the heavens in its virtuosity that it’s as if he’d been given a different instrument from everyone else in pop and rock. Not that he wasn’t profoundly influenced. He had a four-octave range, and when he ascended into the upper registers, with that theremin wail and that incredibly fast vibrato, he sounded like his greatest idol, Nina Simone, crossed with his other greatest idol, Robert Plant, crossed with the most impassioned angel God had ever gifted.

It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley (Sundance) Review: A moving tribute to an iconic artist who died young

Plot: The life and career of singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley, who posthumously rose to fame after his tragic, mysterious death at only thirty years old.
Review: One of the ways I judge a documentary is how “inside baseball” it is for the uninitiated. This approach is sometimes necessary, especially when your subject’s life has been chronicled at length – such as another doc I saw here at Sundance, One to One: John & Yoko. Yet, when the subject is more niche, this approach doesn’t always work as it limits the potential audience. Such was my fear walking into It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley. While an icon, I must admit my knowledge of him is limited to his iconic cover of “Hallelujah” and the fact that he died young. As such, I figured I’d be lost watching this.
Happily, director Amy Berg (West of Memphis) strikes a good balance,...

Jeff‘s mom Mary Guibert revealed that Brad reached out to her with the idea and explained why she turned it down.
Although the biopic didn’t work out, Brad did get to be involved in a different project about Jeff‘s life.

Speaking to Variety, Mary revealed that Brad reached out in 2000 about the movie. He was so dedicated that he even invited her to his wedding to Jennifer Aniston.

Ten years after her Janis Joplin bio-doc, Janis: Little Girl Blue, director Amy Berg returns to the music world with It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley, an adoring portrait of another blazing talent who died way too young, leaving an influential legacy. Every fan — whether those of us who got misty-eyed to his music in the ‘90s or romantic teenagers discovering him in recent years via social media — has their favorite Buckley songs. Mine oscillate between “So Real” and “Grace,” “Last Goodbye” and “Everybody Here Wants You.” For Berg, whose connection to the artist’s music pulses through every moment of her new doc, it would appear to be his transcendent cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”
That’s an entirely valid choice and a popular one, it being Buckley’s only song to reach No. 1 on a Billboard chart — in 2008, 11 years after his tragic death at age 30. But it...

For more than two decades, filmmakers chased the lightning-in-a-bottle story of Jeff Buckley, one of the most gifted and promising musicians of his generation, who drowned in a Memphis river in May 1997 at the age of 30.
Back in 2000, Brad Pitt courted Buckley’s mother, Mary Guibert, inviting her to lunch at his Los Feliz home and adding her to the VIP guest list for his wedding to Jennifer Aniston. It didn’t require much arm-twisting before she granted the actor permission to make a biopic about her son, the tortured singer-songwriter who is best known for performing the greatest version ever of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”
“If there’s 20 people calling you, and Brad Pitt is one of them, who are you gonna pick to go see?” Guibert says with a laugh.
But Guibert was skeptical about the idea of Pitt, or any actor for that matter, tackling the role of her only child.

Last fall, 27 years after Jeff Buckley died, the singer-songwriter best known for his haunting cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” reached a surprising new chart peak. Propelled mainly by teenage girls using the track as the backdrop for their moody musings, “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over,” a plaintive breakup tune from Buckley’s 1994 studio album, Grace, became the 19th most popular song on the TikTok Billboard top 50. “Ugh the Og yearner ,” reads an appreciative comment on a black-and-white video of Buckley performing the song that has been liked 640,000 times. “Imagine getting a song like this written about you like ,” reads one from another wistful admirer.
To older generations of Buckley fans, these youthful reactions are entirely understandable. “You hear that song, and you feel the most romantic feelings you could feel,” says documentarian Amy Berg, 54, who first had her own moody Buckley moment in the ’90s.

Amid ongoing wildfires ravaging Southern California, Bette Midler platformed a display of resilience from one family who lost everything.
On Friday, the 2x Oscar nominee shared a video of the Halpin family singing “hallelujah” on the burned remains of their Altadena home, which was destroyed this week in the Eaton Fire.
“So glad we can offer some small comfort to those who have lost so much! Thank you, @bettemidler,” wrote displaced resident Karolyn Dudro, sharing the video to her Instagram Story.
Dudro previously grieved the loss of their family home. “It was quite a morning for my parents and family. Its the time of year when there are radio stations dedicated to all types of Christmas music. Some of the tunes are directly holiday-related while others really have nothing to do with the holiday season. Here are seven oft-played Christmas songs that are played all the time, but aren’t directly related to Christmas.
7. ‘Linus and Lucy’
The animated film A Charlie Brown Christmas is a holiday classic. And yes, the story is centered around a Christmas pageant and finding the perfect Christmas tree.
However, one of the most popular songs from the animated motion picture has nothing to do with Christmas at all. It has no words, and isn’t directly linked to a specific scene about the religious aspect of the day.
Instead, “Linus and Lucy” is played in between rehearsals for the group’s Christmas pageant. Its iconic melody typically leads to dancing in a vein similar to that of Linus,...

It appears Violet Grohl is set to release her debut album in the near future.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the eldest daughter of Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl has been “incredibly committed” to making full use of the studio space she received as a birthday gift from her father. Producer Justin Raisen is among her collaborators.
It’s believed the 18-year-old Grohl has enough material recorded for a full album, but details like a release date and record label are unclear at this time. Of course, her dad’s own Roswell imprint under RCA Records is a possibility.
Since making her on-stage debut in 2018, Violet has toured with Foo Fighters as a backing vocalist, but has also proven capable of standing on her own in recent years.
In 2022, Grohl paid tribute to Jeff Buckley and Amy Winehouse at the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert in London and covered “Hallelujah” at the Los Angeles show.

Violet Grohl has been hard at work on an album, The Hollywood Reporter has learned, and those who’ve heard her music say it’s fantastic.
The 18-year-old daughter of Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl, who has toured as a backup singer for her dad’s band and performed as a solo singer, is described as being “incredibly committed” to the music-making process and “to growing as an artist,” says a source. She’s been working out songs in a studio space gifted by her father for her birthday. Among her collaborators is producer Justin Raisen, who worked with Kim Gordon on her Grammy-nominated album The Collective in addition to previous collaborations with the likes of Charli Xcx and Lil Yachty.
“She’s a true torch singer,” says one source. “Her vocals are tremendous. She’s very talented.”

DC Comics long ago branched out from comics, doing video games and TV shows and even movies. While all of these media are great, they're also all different. Being different forms of media, they all have their own strengths and weaknesses. During an interview with Polygon, well-known DC writer Tom King discussed some of the major advantages that movies and TV shows have over comic books.
Comic books' major advantage is not needing to worry about a budget, for the most part, for its visuals. If a creator wants a giant space armada looming over Earth, they don't have to check if it's in the CGI budget. All they have to do is have an artist with the talent and the time to get it done: a huge advantage over both TV and movies. Despite this powerful advantage, Lanterns writer King has gone on record to state that there are...

The Beatles were supposedly “more popular than Jesus,” and yet their song “Let It Be” took on a religious significance to many people. That was never what the song was supposed to be. The tune became a massive hit in the United States. Years after its release, even John Lennon himself bemoaned that the track was too popular for its own good.
Paul McCartney revealed who The Beatles’ ‘Let It Be’ is actually about
There’s a great tradition of pop songs that sound like gospel music without being religious per se. These tracks include Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” Elvis Presley’s “Burning Love,” Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” Madonna’s “Like a Prayer,” and Kesha’s “Praying.” The Beatles might have written the most famous pseudo-gospel song of all time: “Let It Be.”
It’s easy to mistake “Let It Be” for a Christian tune, considering it has a gospel soundscape.

Last week, Toni Cornell, daughter of the late Soundgarden and Audioslave singer Chris Cornell, teased the release of her debut single. Today she has made good on that promise, dropping the song “Sunset of Your Love.”
Taking from both Lana Del Rey-esque baroque pop and the rock music her father was known for, “Sunset of Your Love” is a dramatic first taste of Toni’s original songwriting. There are wailing guitars, huge synth drops, a sequenced beat, and an impressive lead vocal performance. Listen to it below.
Though, technically, “Sunset of Your Love” isn’t the first track from Toni. Back in 2019, she shared a tune called “Far Away Places.”
In addition to her two original songs, Toni has performed several covers. She’s tackled Temple of the Dog’s “Hunger Strike,” Pearl Jam’s “Black,” Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” and Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.” Notably, the latter...

“Got a lotta talk in my brain right now/Sorry, gotta do it, gotta let you down,” Shawn Mendes sings on the pointedly titled “Who I Am,” the acoustic opening track from his fifth studio album. The meditative Shawn comes two years after Mendes canceled his 2022 world tour due to mental health issues, and the singer’s new music is emblematic of a newfound self-reflection. The result is his most candid work to date.
With nothing but time on his hands to take stock of his life, Mendes sounds at peace with not knowing life’s big questions. “I stepped off the stage with nothing left/All the lights were fuckin’ with my head,” he sings on lead single “Why Why Why.” “But here I am, singing songs again.”
On “The Mountain,” Mendes evokes John Lennon’s “Imagine” as he looks both inward and outward in an attempt to reconnect with his higher self.

From the very beginning of his fifth album Shawn, Shawn Mendes makes it clear he still doesn’t know who he is. Opening track “Who I Am” is riddled with the anxiety and disillusionment of a quarter-life crisis: “Got a lot of talk in my brain right now…Everything’s hard to explain out loud,” he sings in the first verse. On Shawn, he tries his best to detail everything that’s happened in the last two years since he abruptly canceled his Wonder world tour and watched the unraveling...

Well, at least we didn’t get Maya Rudolph singing Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”
It was a tough night at Studio 8H this past Saturday, where a Bill Burr-hosted episode kicked off with some standard political satire, albeit this time focused on appeasing newly elected Donald Trump — a figure they’d spent most of the fall skewering. “Saturday Night Live” is not a show that typically hides its liberal leanings, but in this new, likely fascist era, the cast wanted to make sure Trump knew he had their support and downright adulation. Cast members Bowen Yang, Ego Nwodim, Kenan Thompson, Heidi Gardner, Marcello Hernandez, Sarah Sherman, and Colin Jost all lined up to pledge their fealty, with James Austin Johnson even unveiling a new interpretation of Trump that sees him as a muscular, Rambo-type figure. Obviously, “SNL 50” was making light of the authoritarianism we are likely to face over the next few years,...

Chris Cornell’s 20-year-old daughter Toni has criticized TMZ for posting photos depicting the death scene of former One Direction member Liam Payne, comparing it to the outlet’s coverage of her own father’s passing in 2017.
Following Payne’s death on October 17th, TMZ initially published a purported photo of Payne’s arm and waist after his fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, identifying the singer with his tattoos. While the outlet removed the image after receiving widespread criticism, that came too late for Toni Cornell, who took to her Instagram Stories to voice her disgust with TMZ’s decision to post the image in the first place.
Toni wrote the following on her Instagram Stories:
“In the wake of Liam Payne’s tragic passing, I feel compelled to speak out about the disgusting, distressing photos released by TMZ including graphic images of his hotel room and body.

Sersi and her fellow immortal beings stopped the emergence of Tiamut in the 2021 film Eternals. However, Tiamut’s head and left hand had partially arisen out of the ocean, leaving a weird-looking structure in the ocean.

Country star Eric Church has responded to criticism he received for putting on an unconventional, polarizing headlining set at the Stagecoach Music Festival.
Taking the festival’s main stage for its closing slot on Friday night, Church transformed Stagecoach into a literal church of sorts, projecting dramatic stained-glass art behind him and enlisting a gospel choir to fill-out the sound. Though his performance began later than scheduled, it opened with quite a statement: a five-minute organ intro followed by a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” (but don’t tell St. Vincent that).

From there, Church’s setlist featured more covers — some traditional and some quite unexpected. He played “This Little Light of Mine,” and other standards, but also reimagined songs like Tupac Shakur’s “California Love” and Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice.” Notably missing, though, were many of Church’s own songs — he...

Is there any current director who is more controversial than Zack Snyder? It’s wild how divisive a figure he is, with his fans nearly cult-like in their devotion, while his detractors are just as fervent. Here at JoBlo, we’ve always been ardent supporters, even if we haven’t unquestioningly praised all of his films. Thus, we thought it would be interesting to do an all-around ranking of his films (although we’ve left the animated Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole off the list). So, without further ado, here’s our ranking from worst to best.
Sucker Punch:
I’ll admit to not knowing precisely what Snyder was trying to pull off when I saw this movie in 2011. It remains the most obscure of his live-action films. It is a tough nut to crack, being that it’s a fantastical, hyper-surrealistic fantasy centred around a woman...

Stagecoach is known for its surprises and, on Friday night, Eric Church delivered one of the most unexpected sets in the California country music festival’s history. The question facing fans is, was it a good surprise or a bad one?
Church hadn’t headlined Stagecoach since 2016 and is currently in the midst of a 19-show residency at his Nashville bar Chief’s that finds him getting up-close and candid with fans and testing out new songs. When he appeared on the Mane Stage at 9:45 p.m. to the...

St. Vincent’s seventh studio album, All Born Screaming, has arrived.
Described by St. Vincent’s Annie Clark as a “post-plague pop” album about “heaven and hell — the metaphorical kinds,” All Born Screaming was first announced this past February, and was preceded by its singles, “Broken Man,” “Flea,” and “Big Time Nothing.”
Get St. Vincent Tickets Here
The album’s full tracklist spans 10 songs, and includes contributions from exciting collaborators like Dave Grohl, Josh Freese, Cate Le Bon (who features on the title track), and more.
One poignant moment is the song “Sweetest Fruit,” which was partially inspired by the legacy and death of Sophie, who Clark “never met,” but was “an admirer from afar,” according to a recent interview. Stream All Born Screaming in its entirety below.
Meanwhile, Clark is gearing up for her 2024 tour, which kicks off in May and will bring her to cities like San Francisco,...

St. Vincent has shared “Big Time Nothing,” the third single to arrive ahead of her forthcoming album, All Born Screaming. Watch the lyric video below.
“Big Time Nothing” follows the previously released tracks “Flea” and “Broken Man” in anticipation of the LP, set for release later this week on April 26th. While the other two singles share the psychedelic touches of “Big Time Nothing,” this latest offering leans even further into explosive instrumentals and pulls back the focus on lyrics. St. Vincent holds the sole producer credit on all three tracks, and All Born Screaming is poised to be her first entirely self-produced album.

St. Vincent is also gearing up for a 2024 tour, which kicks off in May in Ventura, California before hitting cities like Boston, Philadelphia, Ann Arbor, and more. The spring and summer trek will feature Momma, Yves Tumor, Spoon, Dorian Electra, and Eartheater rotating in support.

Host Ryan Seacrest will announce the “American Idol” Top 20 in a live three-hour episode on Sunday, April 14. The Top 24 Season 22 contestants sang for America’s vote from Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa in Hawaii over the past two nights. Hoda Kotb shared a message for a grieving friend this week and Today fans thought it was very sweet. She had a few personal things on her mind in March, which makes it seem like a very kind act.
Hoda Kotb Fans Like Her Caring Heart
In the first week of March, some worrying news arrived about Hope, the host’s four-year-old child who had a medical problem in February. Hope ended up in the ICU, but her mom’s not the kind of person to splash her children’s intimate problems out on social media. So, fans respect her for that. She seems like a caring and loving mom to her kids, who were adopted by Hoda and her ex, Joel Schiffman.

Mainstream music can be painfully predictable, but sometimes the unexpected is even worse. Troye Sivan covered George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” for the television series The Idol. Words cannot express how wrong a choice this was. While the original “My Sweet Lord” has a reputation for being a classic, John Lennon seemed to dismiss it.
George Harrison’s ‘My Sweet Lord’ didn’t need a synthesizer revamp from Troye Sivan
As a musician, George was many things. Spiritual. Folky. Philosophical. “My Sweet Lord”‘s gentle guitar rhythm and lyrics about God perfectly encapsulate his work.
Sivan is none of those things. While he tried for some Lorde-esque youthful wisdom on his first album, the rest of his music is squarely aimed at the club. And that’s fine. But having him cover “My Sweet Lord” is like asking one of those risque DeviantArtists to remake the Mona Lisa. Whatever the result,...

Actors reacted with unbridled joy — and some healthy skepticism — to the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike after the union reached a tentative deal Wednesday with the AMPTP on the 118th day of work stoppage.
The strike officially ends at 12:01 that evening but goes to the union’s national board on Friday.
“Lost” and “The Good Doctor” actor-producer Daniel Dae Kim tweeted, “Woo hooo!!!! Let’s hope the deal is fair and we can get back to work!”
SAG-AFTRA Negotiating Committee member Frances Fisher, who told TheWrap that the only times she wasn’t on the picket lines was when she was meeting with the studios, tweeted a photo of herself holding out her arms in triumph in front of the SAG building on Wilshire Blvd.

Killing off Marissa in The O.C. was a mistake, according to the show's creators. It was a forced decision that ultimately angered fans. The show was already struggling in its third season with darker storylines, Marissa's death was just one part of the show's decline. Despite the negative fan reaction, The O.C. managed to improve in its fourth season by infusing humor and charm back into the show, giving viewers a rewarding ending.
While The O.C. was wrong to kill central character Marissa Cooper (Mischa Barton) in the way they did, the character's exit ultimately helped the show. Created by Josh Schwartz, The O.C. became a cultural touchstone in the early 2000s. Running for four seasons, The O.C. followed troubled teenager Ryan Atwood (Ben McKenzie) as he began a new life with the wealthy Cohen family. Amazon Prime’s adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s bestselling novel Daisy Jones & the Six traces the rise and fall of a fictional Seventies rock band through a doc-style miniseries. The 10-episode miniseries brings to life the magic behind the two halves of the title, along with highs, bitter arguments, and behind-the-scenes tension, while centering around lead singers Daisy Jones and Billy Dunne (played by Riley Keough and Sam Claflin). England produced some of the best classic rock artists of all time. Queen Elizabeth knighted several musicians before she died, and many more received the country’s highest honor. But King Charles’ favorite musician didn’t come from England.
King Charles once said Leonard Cohen was his favorite musician: ‘It’s terrific stuff’
Charles watched The Beatles take over the world, The Rolling Stones cement themselves as one of the finest rock bands anywhere, and Led Zeppelin rewrote the heavy rock playbook.
Yet none of those English bands compared to Leonard Cohen.
During a 2006 interview celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Prince’s Trust, the future king admitted he found it hard to keep up with the onslaught of new bands. He then named Canadian singer-songwriter Cohen as his favorite musician.

Stevie Nicks has thanked Taylor Swift for penning the Midnights song “You’re on Your Own, Kid,” which the Fleetwood Mac singer says helped her grieve the loss of her bandmate and friend Christine McVie.
“Thank you to Taylor Swift for doing a favor for me, and that is, writing a song called ‘You’re on Your Own, Kid,'” Nicks said on Monday, May 22nd during the Atlanta stop of her headlining tour (grab tickets here). “That is the sadness of how I feel.”
Nicks went on to share how close she was with McVie, even when they were separated for long periods of time: “Even on the other side of the world, [Christine and I] didn’t have to talk on the phone, we really weren’t phone buddies. Then we would go back to Fleetwood Mac, and we would walk in and it would be like, ‘Little sister, how are you?...

After the first several American Idol winners were crowned, they all became extremely famous. While the amount of financial success those winners enjoyed varied, there was no way to argue that the show didn't give them a platform at the very least.
Easily Idol's two most successful winners, Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood proved that the show can spawn music superstars. After all, Clarkson became famous enough that she got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Underwood has devoted fans who love her lesser-known music.
Despite the titanic success Idol enjoyed during its early seasons, the show became less popular over time. Idol's ratings eventually so far downhill that Fox canceled the show, and it only came back because ABC gave it another chance.
Given that Idol is nowhere near as popular as it once was, it makes sense that several of the show's winners didn't go on to enjoy much success.

American Idol introduced platinum tickets to honor season 20, but the coveted prizes seem to be causing more problems than they're worth. The American Idol judges, Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan, give one talented recipient in each audition city the platinum ticket to indicate that they see a lot of potential in the contestant. It also gives each winner the privilege of skipping the first round of Hollywood Week. In season 20, they also had the advantage of choosing their duet partners during the second round. However, in season 21, everyone chose their own partners.
During American Idol season 20, HunterGirl, Jay Copeland, and Kenedi Anderson were given the platinum tickets. Kenedi withdrew from the competition for undisclosed reasons before the semifinals, while Jay placed in the Top 7. HunterGirl was the runner-up to winner Noah Thompson. In American Idol season 21, Tyson Venegas, Kaylin Hedges, and Cam Amen received platinum tickets, but the...

“It’s just a show,” is the common response from someone seeing a person crying at the death of a fictional person on screen. But TV acolytes will know that it can be hard to rein in the emotions when your favourite character for the past seven years has just been killed off.
In the battle of TV versus cinema, the former has always packed more of a punch when it comes to impactful deaths – probably because we’ve come to know the character better over a longer period of time. And when someone who you’ve grown used to seeing day-in and day-out suddenly vanishes from your life forever, there are going to be some emotional ramifications.
Sometimes, in the saddest of circumstances, the demise of a character even marks the demise of the show itself, with creators and writers failing to keep us interested beyond their death blow.
