Quisling must defend himself on multiple fronts. His lawyer wants to declare him insane, while the prosecution is seeking the death penalty.

Quisling is deeply affected by his imprisonment and psychiatric treatment. His lawyer seeks Maria's help to portray Quisling as humble.

The verdict is passed. Maria battles against the Norwegian state, trying to secure a pardon for Quisling. Peder attempts to make Quisling place his trust in God.
