Sundance 2025 will be remembered as what’s probably the penultimate year that film festival calls Park City home, as well as the edition that gave us a body-horror rom-com (Irl couple Alison Brie and Dave Franco’s gloriously disgusting Together), an introduction to a major new triple-threat talent (Eva Victor’s Sorry, Baby), a pastoral look at the stoic 20th century everymen who made our country (Train Dreams), and a whole lotta music docs. But for us, this Sundance will always be the one where we got to eavesdrop on...

‘Queer’ Trailer: Daniel Craig Seduces Drew Starkey in Luca Guadagnino’s Sexy and Surreal Gay Romance
The trailer for “Queer,” starring Daniel Craig and “Outer Banks” breakout Drew Starkey, has been released by A24. Helmed by “Challengers” and “Call Me By Your Name” director Luca Guadagnino from a screenplay by Justin Kuritzkes, the film is set for a theatrical release starting Nov. 27.
“Queer,” based on the semi-autobiographical novel by William Burroughs, is set in Mexico City during the 1940s and follows William Lee (Craig), an American expat living mostly in isolation among American college students and bar owners. He becomes infatuated with a discharged American Navy serviceman, Eugene Allerton (Starkey), a drug user who eventually becomes involved with Lee after initially being indifferent to his advances. Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville and Omar Apollo co-star.
“Queer” had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, where it competed for the Golden Lion. The film went on to screen the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival.

Maybe you can forgive the slowed-down, stripped-back cover song trailer cliché when it's packaged as part of one of Luca Guadagnino's lovely, seductive films. Like this rendition of "All Apologies," the Queer trailer is full of tenderness and longing painted over something harder and uglier: the flop sweat of...

Days after announcing the main slate for this year’s New York Film Festival, the event’s organizers added another highly anticipated feature to its roster.
On Thursday, Film at Lincoln Center announced that Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” will have its U.S. premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 6 as a spotlight gala. The film is an adaptation of William S. Burroughs’s novel of the same name with a script from “Challengers” writer Justin Kuritzkes. Daniel Craig leads the cast with Drew Starkey, Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, Michael Borremans, Andra Ursuta, and filmmaker David Lowery in various supporting roles.
“I am so privileged and elated to present a movie of mine for the third time at NYFF, ‘Queer’ in particular,” said Guadagnino in a statement. “It is a very personal movie about the inescapable quest for being recognized in the gaze of another through the lens of the great William Burroughs.

The New York Film Festival said Luca Guadagnino’s Queer will be the Spotlight Gala of the 62nd New York Film Festival, making its U.S. premiere.
The adaptation of William S. Burroughs’s novel, scripted by Justin Kuritzkes, stars Daniel Craig, Drew Starkey, Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, Michael Borremans, Andra Ursuta, and David Lowery. Written in the early 1950s but not published until 1985, Queer has come to be considered a canonical work in the career of the Beat Generation author and a cornerstone of transgressive gay literature.
“Luca Guadagnino is one of contemporary cinema’s most versatile filmmakers, and one of its biggest risk-takers,” said NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim. “Queer is his most fearless, inventive, and surprising film, one that brings its subcultural world to brilliant life and creates the role of a lifetime for a tremendous Daniel Craig.”

The 2024 New York Film Festival has set Luca Guadagnino’s Queer as its Spotlight gala screening, with the U.S. premiere of the film adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ novel of the same name taking place Oct. 6.
The film, which features a screenplay by Guadagnino’s Challengers collaborator Justin Kuritzkes, stars Daniel Craig, Drew Starkey, Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, Michael Borremans, Andra Ursuta and David Lowery. The Fremantle film was produced by The Apartment and Frenesy film company as well as Fremantle North America in collaboration with Cinecittà Spa and Frame by Frame.
In the film, Craig plays Burroughs’ alter ego, habitual heroin user William Lee, who, while spending time with gay American expatriates in Mexico City in the late 1940s, falls in love and embarks on an affair with the preppy ex-military Eugene Allerton (Starkey).
The movie features a score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

Luca Guadagnino’s new movie “Queer” does not have an American distributor just yet, but it does have a U.S. premiere. The drug-fueled gay romance, starring Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey and based on a William S. Burroughs novella, will screen at the 2024 New York Film Festival following a world premiere in the Venice competition. NYFF announced today that “Queer” will screen as its Spotlight Gala on October 6. And mathing the festival math, a U.S. premiere means “Queer” won’t show up at Telluride but should expect to be added to the Toronto International Film Festival lineup for its North American premiere any day now.

Following Challengers, Luca Guadagnino will next direct After The Hunt, adding Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield to the cast.
Luca Guadagnino is flying high at the moment with the release of Challengers, the highly-anticipated love triangle tennis drama that has been scoring excellent reviews.
Guadagnino also has Queer on the way later this year too. That sounds equally promising given that Guadagnino is directing Daniel Craig in an adaptation of the William Burroughs book of the same name. That one shot last year and is set to release sometime this year (we think).
Looking beyond that, Guagagnino has a packed slate (more on that below) but when news broke last month that the director would be working with Julia Roberts on a project for Amazon, we suspected it might get fast-tracked and that seems to be the case.
According to Deadline, Andrew Garfield is in final talks to join After The Hunt,...

Prominent Italian producers Mario Gianani and Lorenzo Mieli are exiting their Fremantle-owned companies — Wildside and The Apartment, respectively — in an industry shakeup expected to lead them to jointly form a new independent scripted content outfit.
Gianani and Mieli co-founded Wildside in 2009 and turned it into the powerhouse behind major global dramas such as Rai/HBO’s “The Young Pope” and “My Brilliant Friend,” to name a few. Wildside was aquired by Fremantle in 2015.
Mieli subsequently went his own way and set up The Apartment in 2020 under the Fremantle umbrella. Recent The Apartment titles include Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla” and Pablo Larrain’s upcoming Angelina-starrer “Maria” about iconic soprano Maria Callas, amid a rich international slate.
A Fremantle Italy spokesperson confirmed the ongoing exits of the two top producers, adding that the separations are not acrimonious and that Fremantle is discussing “the ways in which we will will continue to work together.
