Kareem Abeed
- Producer
Born in Aleppo, Kareem Abeed was a recent Electronics and Communications Engineering university graduate when war broke out in Syria in 2011. He began documenting and sharing the news of local atrocities with his mobile phone and camera, and soon found himself at the center of a "Citizen Journalism'' movement in the Middle East, reporting from the frontlines of violence and conflict in Syria. In 2013, he founded the Aleppo Media Center (AMC), a team of dedicated news correspondents who regularly provide stories and footage from within Syria for such major media outlets as CNN and the BBC. Not limiting himself to news, Kareem collaborated with his AMC colleagues to produce the 2017/18 Emmy-, Peabody- and Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning feature documentary, Last Men in Aleppo. The film has further earned Abeed Oscar and Independent Spirit Award nominations for "Best Documentary Feature," as well as the International Documentary Association's Courage Under Fire Award. As one of the leading journalistic voices covering Syria, in 2020 Abeed's established a new organization aim to create a start for the Syrian film called "Syrian film institute" which works directly within Syria
