Disney+ announced that new original special “Encanto at the Hollywood Bowl,” with an introduction by Lin-Manuel Miranda, will launch Wednesday, Dec. 28, on the streamer. The two-night concert event will take place at the Hollywood Bowl on November 11 and 12. The special comes from Disney Branded Television and will be produced by Fulwell 73 Productions.

Showtime has pushed the premiere date for Season 2 of Your Honor to January 2023. Mark Margolis and Mark O’Brien have been cast in Showtime’s “Your Honor” for Season 2 in recurring roles, Variety has learned exclusively.

Margolis will play Carmine Conti, a much feared mobster who is the father of Gina Baxter (Hope Davis). After retiring to Italy, Carmine returns to bring order to the fractured Baxter family. O’Brien is set to portray Father Jay, the Baxter family’s priest whom they rely on for counsel. Series star Bryan Cranston confirmed the news that the hit Showtime drama will conclude with its forthcoming second season.

“I am [currently] preparing for the second and last season of Your Honor, which is a limited series that I did for Showtime,” Cranston shared on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast.

“As they tell me, it got higher ratings than any other series they’ve ever had — and so, one more season of that.”

The news is a little bit surprising, especially when you consider the success of the freshman run.

Then again, the series was initially conceived as a one-season limited series, but Showtime announced a renewal almost a year ago.

Showtime’s legal thriller “Your Honor” opens with intense extended sequence that culminates in a horrifying car crash. It is not only one of the most visually arresting sequences on any series this season, but it was also aurally confronting, due in large part to Oscar-nominated composer Volker Bertelmann‘s hauntingly melancholy score.

For Bertelmann (otherwise known as Hauschka), “it was not ‘thriller’ music all the way through,” he explains. His priority was for the music to focus on the characters’ “inner tension,” which he says inspired many of the tracks he wrote for the show that endeavor to elicit feelings of dread and tension with the audience. Writer-Director John Lee Hancock is known for his muted and methodically compelling style of storytelling and his latest – conceived and sat on since the ’90s – is no different. A generic crime drama slow-burning its way to intensity, relying heavily on its stars, rather than the script, to bring the killer performances of delving into the male psyche and their shortcomings.

Denzel Washington, in his entire stoic splendour, takes on the role of Joe ‘Deke’ Deakins, a charming veteran detective turned cop due to a past career misadventure. On an errand to Los Angeles to pick up some evidence, he can’t help himself getting involved in a serial killer case headed by Rami Malek’s slightly arrogant and slick detective Jimmy Baxter. Jimmy, somewhat in awe of Deke’s past career achievements, softens in the blink of an eye and opens up the investigation to Deke to obtain his experience...

Showtime’s limited series “Your Honor” started with a horrific yet accidental child-on-child crime when Adam Desiato (Hunter Doohan) hit Rocco Baxter (Benjamin Wadsworth) with his car and then left the scene after Rocco had died in the street, so it seems only fitting that it would end with another. But, showrunner Peter Moffat tells Variety, that wasn’t always going to be the case.

“Originally the ending was going to be that Jimmy Baxter takes possession of Adam — that he owns him — and that’s the kind-of killing of Adam. While his father looks on, he loses Adam to his nemesis,” he says.

If you recently watched the neo-noir crime thriller The Little Things, you might have questions about its symbolic open ending (and that red barrette). Following two law-enforcement officers, deputy sheriff Joe "Deke" Deacon (Denzel Washington) and lead detective Jimmy Baxter (Rami Malek), the film centers on a Los Angeles serial-killer case in 1990. After various unsolved murders are committed throughout the city, all following the pattern of women being stabbed to death, the police officers become suspicious of Albert Sparma, a man who works at a repair store near the crimes.

Deacon is an off-kilter police officer with hazy morals - a man who will stop at nothing to solve a case, even if that means breaking the rules of the justice system. The opening of John Lee Hancock’s The Little Things is pure adrenaline. A young woman minding her own business and rightfully bopping to the B-52’s “Roam”—and also making a nice homage to Buffalo Bill’s final victim in The Silence of the Lambs—is targeted by a mysterious driver who tries to run her off the road. Once cornered at a nearby gas station, the would-be victim is only able to escape by the skin of her teeth.

It’s all terrifying, partially because it likely has real world influences, and partially because the only thing she sees of her stalker is “cowboy boots.” The audience gets a better look at them than she does (as well as the duct tape he also collected from his trunk), but it’s not...

The Little Things can be seen as a tainted police procedural with its murky ambiguity and troubling ending. But it’s also the story of a man for whom the allure of a charismatic serial killer goes too far. After all, serial killers make up less than one percent of homicides but they average a double-digit percentage of Hollywood crime films, and probably a majority of prison fan mail. What is it about these one-percenters we love so much?

Directed by John Lee Hancock, the supposed sociopath in The Little Things is Albert Sparma, a drifter who works as a repairman. Jared Leto is certainly magnetic in the part, serving Sparma up with a now-stereotypical “charismatic serial killer” vibe. But the Oscar-winning actor also brings an ambiguous energy to the part, suggesting he may merely be a serial killer groupie.

It will never not be strange that the true crime genre and its fictional counterpart — bloody genres besotted with dead and missing women, haunted detectives, outpourings of familial grief — are not only entertainment, but, for many, an ideal Friday night comfort watch. It’s not a moral question, really; detective stories are rabbit holes whose appeal, i.e. a search for the truths that make such horrors explicable, feels self-explanatory. The violence of these stories, the follies of the truth-seekers, the imminent danger — it all makes the barreling-forward toward discovery,...

John Lee Hancock’s “The Little Things” started out as a contemporary thriller. But since it took 20 years to come to the screen, it now amounts to a period piece, says costume designer Daniel Orlandi. The film is coming to HBO Max and theaters Jan. 29, but Hancock first mentioned the project to his frequent collaborator two decades ago.

The latest from Hancock stars Denzel Washington and Rami Malek as sheriff’s deputies in the 1990s on the trail of a serial killer. Orlandi went through a number of outfits to find the look that “makes the actor feel like the character.”

The murder trail leads Washington’s character, Kern County deputy Joe “Deke” Deacon, south. “He comes to Los Angeles, and he buys an outfit from a thrift store,” Orlandi explains. Initially, the designer had suggested a work jacket with a shirt, but it was Washington who helped put Deacon’s look together.

The bug-eyed psycho, especially when he’s portrayed by a skilled actor, is always good for a laugh, or a shudder, or something in between. It’s all about underplaying the overstatement. You’ve got to cue the audience to see that he’s cuh-cuh-crazy, but you’ve got to do it with just enough finesse to leave them thinking, “Is it all an act?” Jared Leto, who admittedly has had a lot of practice, knows how to give a state-of-the-art performance as the kind of diabolical screw-loose sleaze you love to loathe. He anchors the best sequence in “The Little Things” (a police interrogation), though another way to put that is that the scene raises the bar to a place that the rest of the movie can’t match.

Leto plays Albert Sparma, a piece of L.A. trash who looks like he’s halfway between a homeless person and Jesus.

Your Honor has the perfect protagonist-villain dynamic. New Orleans judge Michael Desiato (Bryan Cranston) is doing his best not to lose his son to the claws of both legal and street justice while crime lord Jimmy Baxter (Michael Stuhlbarg) has already lost his son and is seeking revenge. Michael also misses his dead wife while Jimmy is tired of his living one.

The two characters mingle with different kinds of people who make choices that have an immediate impact on them or those around them. It's a shame that Your Honor is only a miniseries. Given how high the stakes keep getting with each new episode, it would have been easy for the writers to find more material for future seasons.

While Showtime's Your Honor might sound like the title of a legal drama, much of the action takes place far away from the courtroom. Even though the protect-your-family plot structure might be familiar to audiences, the majority of the characters aren't. Each of them brings their own sense of aura.

New Orleans judge Michael Desiato (Bryan Cranston) is as frantic as Walter White in his attempts to cover up for his teenage son who just committed a hit-and-run. Unlike Walter White, Michael is a little bit good at heart. This makes him easily intimated by mob boss Jimmy Baxter, who happens to be the father of the victim.

The premium cabler will offer the fifth episode of the Bryan Cranston legal thriller drama series Your Honor early for streaming and on-demand on Thursday, December 31, ahead of its linear premiere on Sunday, January 3 (10 Pm). Bryan Cranston is back with the Showtime thriller Your Honor, playing a judge whose son finds himself in a bit of legal hot water. (Ok, a lot of hot water.)

Sunday’s premiere opens with New Orleans judge Michael Desiato (Cranston) jogging through a cemetery at dawn while his son Adam (Truth Be Told‘s Hunter Doohan) wakes up with a girl, played by The Mick‘s Sofia Black-d’Elia, cuddled up next to him in bed. After she leaves, Adam feeds the family dog his pills, grabs his asthma inhaler and drives off with a framed photo in tow.

Judge Michael Desiato (Bryan Cranston) is a good and righteous man. Showtime’s new limited series “Your Honor” wants its audience to know that upfront so that when he starts doing some very bad things, all in the name of protecting himself and his son, he will be viewed as “a damaged man [who] loses himself for a greater good,” as Cranston puts it.

Creator and showrunner Peter Moffat first introduces Michael in “Your Honor” as he is peering into a home that is clearly not his own, which may raise some eyebrows about his character. But very quickly in the premiere episode that early morning excursion is explained as being a noble act: He went to the home of a woman who was being put on trial in front of him, to determine if the police officer testifying that he saw her hide drugs inside herself could have realistically seen...
