Maxtime Pictures’ “Her Story,” a comedy-drama film told from a largely female perspective, topped the mainland China box office for the fourth consecutive weekend.
The box office remained sluggish despite a few new releases, with Hollywood holdover “Moana 2” dropping out of the top five and Sony’s “Kraven the Hunter” making a modest debut.
Data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway showed “Her Story” sliding from its previous weekend’s showing by earning RMB52.1 million ($7.3 million) between Friday and Sunday. The film now has a cumulative total of $89 million in the Middle Kingdom. The film was the seventh highest grossing film internationally, according to numbers from Comscore.

“Alien: Romulus” has become Hollywood’s second biggest film of the year at the mainland China box office, following a strong second weekend hold.
The film picked up RMB140 million ($19.7 million) between Friday and Sunday in China, according to data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway. That compares favorably with its $26.2 million opening weekend and gives it a cumulative of RMB523 ($73.7 million) since releasing on Aug. 16.
Among Hollywood import titles in 2024, the running total is beaten only by (Chinese-backed) “Godzilla v Kong” which amassed $134 million.
In less than two weeks, “Alien” has jumped ahead of a cluster of Hollywood’s other franchise titles and the $50 million ceiling that most have been stuck beneath. “Kung Fu Panda 4” earned $52 million in China. “Despicable Me 4” earned $56 million. “Dune 2” earned $49.7 million. “Inside Out 2” earned $48 million.
Imax reports that, of the latest weekend gross figure, the film earned $2.75 million on its screens.

Director Damo Yang joins Directors Notes today for a double-header in the form of two music videos for pop sensation Roy Wang and indie outfit Backspace. Titled Fabulous Nuts and Six-Eyed Dragonfly respectively, both videos showcasw Yang’s broad abilities to shift and react to each artist’s own musical sensibility. Fabulous Nuts sees Roy Wang star as a bombastic magician on a dreamlike stage, using magical powers to manipulate his expressionistic environment, while Six-Eyed Dragonfly, on the other hand, shows a soft exploration of personal comfort and redemption set amongst a community on the outskirts of Beijing. Both videos are wildly different yet equally well-constructed and that is down to Yang’s ability to adapt. Wanting to dig into differing approaches for each video, Dn caught up with Yang to discuss their economically contrasting yet equally intense and time-sensitive productions.
