In the world of ice dancing, nothing is off limits. That’s the tone and story that Layne Fargo set to tell with “The Favorites,” her latest novel that has become the talk of social media since its January release.
Per the book’s description, “To the world, they were a scandal. To each other, an obsession. An epic love story set in the sparkling, savage sphere of elite figure skating, starring a woman determined to carve her own path on and off the ice.”
“The Favorites” is told through multiple storylines — both from Katarina Shaw’s point of view as she falls in love with Heath Rocha as a kid and begins her Olympic journey; and that journey told by others via an unauthorized documentary celebrating the tenth anniversary of Shaw and Rocha’s final skate.

2024 was a big year for movies and TV shows, with many skilled actors proving once again that they're some of the most important performers of the decade. While there are plenty of actors who have long since had their breakout roles and are veterans of the industry, there are just as many who are carving out their niche in film and television. Though having a good 2024 doesn't necessarily mean that the coming years will be as successful, it's difficult to imagine that these stars will fade in the coming years thanks to their newly minted legacies.
Whether they were in one of the best indie movies of 2024 or a recording-breaking blockbuster, these actors made their mark in movies and television this year. For some, their biggest projects were only released within the last few weeks, but even this was enough to elevate their relevance, especially with awards season coming up.

Glen Powell's 2024 action movie breaks a streaming record held by Christopher Nolan's Oscar-winner, Oppenheimer. The Nolan film, which stars Cillian Murphy as the titular scientist, arrived on Peacock's streaming platform exclusively on February 16 this year, seven months after its release date on July 21, 2023, and it soon became the No. 1 Pay-1 film on the platform within its first 14 days.
According to Deadline, Twisters has topped Oppenheimer's record as the new Peacock's biggest Pay-1 film ever in its first 14 days. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, the sequel to Michael Crichton's 1996 blockbuster Twister stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Powell in the lead roles and was an even bigger hit at the box office than the original film. The sequel broke a record at its opening as the No.1 box office debut for a natural disaster film and ended its run with $267.7 million domestically.

After waiting nearly 30 years for a sequel, Twisters characters offer a fresh group of movie stars to the world of storm chasing. The original Twister follows a pair of married storm chasers who put themselves at the mercy of dust storms and tornadoes to implement a new weather alert system. The film was a box office triumph, grossing around $500 million, with much of this success attributed to Twisters memorable cast of Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt, and Cary Elwes. Twisters seeks to match that effect with a cast of modern stars like Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos.
Twisters has been in development for a long time, with numerous writers and directors considered before landing on Minari director Lee Isaac Chung and The Revenant screenwriter Mark L. Smith. The Twisters cast boasts a breakout Top Gun: Maverick actor and the star of a hit miniseries among its ensemble, as well...

In addition to Powell and Edgar-Jones, the cast includes Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, David Corenswet, Maura Tierney, Sasha Lane and more. It was directed by Lee Isaac Chung and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Thomas Hayslip and Ashley Jay Sandberg.
Here’s the official logline: “‘Twisters’ brings back the blockbuster disaster epic with a whirlwind of heart-stopping action and exhilarating thrills.

The cancellation of beloved TV shows like The Oa and Mindhunter can leave fans with unanswered questions and disappointment. Fans' support through campaigns and demonstrations can sometimes save a show from being canceled due to strong audience interest. Reboots and revivals of canceled TV shows like Hannibal and Gossip Girl are possible if actors, writers, and showrunners are willing to return.
When a TV show is canceled, it's normal for audience members and the show's creators to hold out hope that it might return. While some series reach their natural conclusion or have always planned to have a limited number of seasons, others are cut short before their time, leaving unanswered questions and unfinished character arcs. This can be immensely disappointing, especially if audiences have spent years becoming invested in the story, only to never discover how it ends. Boone brings a wild, comedic energy to Twisters, reminiscent of the beloved character Dusty from the original Twister movie. While not a replacement for Philip Seymour Hoffman, Brandon Perea's portrayal of Boone adds depth and humor to the ensemble cast. Twisters delivers plenty of spectacle and humor, with Boone serving as a fun and likable character alongside the seemingly fearless storm chaser Tyler.
I enjoyed Boones character in Twisters, but no one could replace the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffmans role as Dusty from the original movie. “Twisters” blasted off at the domestic box office with a huge $80.5 million, but one of the biggest talking points from film on social media is for something that didn’t actually make it into the movie. Set footage depicting stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell filming a climactic scene in which their characters share a passionate kiss went viral in the days leading up to the “Twisters” release, but fans were soon left devastated by the kiss not making it into the theatrical cut.
“I think it’s a Spielberg note, wasn’t it?” Edgar-Jones told Collider about the cut kiss, revealing that executive producer Steven Spielberg opted for the kiss not to be shown in the movie. “I think it stops the film feeling too clichéd, actually. I think there’s something really wonderful about it feeling like there’s a continuation. This isn’t the end of their story.

When it came to making the Twister sequel, the franchise opted to move in a new direction that focused on new characters part of a younger generation of storm chasers and tornado enthusiasts. This is how Twisters' cast came to be headlined by Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos, among others. In many cases, it is possible to see similarities between the new and original characters too.

“Twisters” may only be Brandon Perea’s second summer blockbuster after also co-starring in Jordan Peele’s 2022 sci-fi horror film “Nope,” but it would seem like he’s getting the hang of it pretty quickly. Taking on the supporting role of Boone, right-hand man to Glen Powell’s tornado wrangler Tyler Owens, Perea delivers a full-throttle, often comedic performance that echoes Philip Seymour Hoffman’s work in the original “Twister” as storm-chaser and food-lover Dusty. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter for a recent interview, Perea shared how he immediately recognized Boone as the Dusty character of the sequel, but didn’t realize he’d be the one to take it on.
“When I first got the script, I didn’t know which character I was actually reading for. I just got the script to see if I was into it. And then we had the roles mixed up,” Perea said.

[Editor’s note: The following story contains spoilers for “Twisters”]
There’s nothing quite like a big, loud, summer blockbuster. The kind of film that shakes your seat, blasts your ears, and tugs at your heartstrings with excessive, yet entertaining force. Many films this summer have tried to service this need, including “The Fall Guy” and “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” but “Twisters” may finally be the one to exceed financial expectations, if not at least meet them. Critics have already praised its direction and VFX, plus this Glen Powell summer would not be complete without another hit at the box office for the handsome human golden retriever. However, as much as “Twisters” delivers on its promise to blow you away, the one thing holding it back from being a masterpiece on the level of “Top Gun: Maverick” — other than not having Tom Cruise, of course — is its relation to its predecessor, the 1996 disaster film from “Speed” director Jan de Bont and quite singular,...

Glen Powell honors the memory of Bill Paxton as Twisters carves a new path of destruction in cinemas
As Twisters churns and thrashes its way into theaters, one of the film’s stars, Glen Powell, is paying tribute to the late actor Bill Paxton, who helped make the first film a classic. Paxton starred alongside Helen Hunt in Jan de Bont’s 1996 action blockbuster as Bill Harding, an accomplished storm chaser on the verge of changing the way extreme weather patterns. Despite not getting along on set, Paxton and Hunt’s chemistry in Twister is electric, and the film would only be nearly as memorable with Paxton’s energy, bravery, and entertaining approach to the material. In a post on social media, Powell remembered the late Paxton, whom he worked with on the 2013 film Red Wing.
“As we release Twisters into the world today, I just wanted to look up and tip my hat to the legend that is Bill Paxton,” Powell shared on Twitter. “A great friend...

"Twisters" may have plenty to prove as the sequel to a beloved '90s blockbuster, but the cast and crew behind the film certainly earned their tornado season bona fides while shooting the blustery project on location in Oklahoma. A new Vanity Fair interview with director Lee Isaac Chung reveals that the film's shoot was battered with multiple storms that forced stars and crew members to seek shelter, and even one that wrecked a set that was already due to be swept away by tornadoes on screen.
Chung, who grew up in Arkansas and says he endured tornadoes while living in a trailer home as a kid, made the conscious choice to film in the heart of the dangerous area known as Tornado Alley. In an impressively meta move, the movie's crew employed both a full-time meteorologist and an emergency planner, both of whom worked to make sure everyone working on the project was safe.
