Easterseals releases new, timely and critically important Public Service Announcements about safety during the Covid-19 pandemic, and encourages all of us to #StayHomeSaveLives.
The leading disability services nonprofit joined with filmmaker John Lawson to produce the spots, recruiting a group of twenty celebrated actors within the disability community to record at-home messages about why we all need to stay at home.
The PSA series reinforces that we are all in this together, and asks us to self-isolate, stay at home, and do our part to stop the spread of this virus – especially because people with disabilities, older adults and individuals with chronic diseases may be particularly vulnerable. There are more than 61 million children and adults living with a disability in the U.S., making it the largest minority group in the country.
“Please share these life-saving PSAs with everyone you know,” says Angela Williams, President and CEO of Easterseals. “We...

Representation is huge and even more impressive when the actor chosen to portray the role truly understands and identifies with the differences or struggles their character was written.
Or perhaps it's progressive when the writers choose to include the actor's storyline into their character's storyline.

The cancellation of Speechless was a “gut wrenching” decision for ABC boss Karey Burke.
The ABC Entertainment president revealed that it was a tough decision that caused a lot of “anguish” and also hit hard given that creator and exec producer Scott Silveri is a former producing partner of hers.
“There was a lot of anguish for me and all of us at ABC. We love Speechless, it was a very tough decision. Scott Silveri is a former producing partner of mine and it was not without great gut wrenching consideration that we ultimately made that call. We looked at a lot of factors and ultimately it came down to numbers and feeling like we could shore up the night more strongly with Fresh Off The Boat,” she said at Disney’s press upfronts.

The bloodbath at ABC continues!
Comedies Speechless and Splitting Up Together are the latest cancellations at the Alphabet network, it has been announced.
Speechless lasted three seasons before the plug was pulled. Moving to a new night this season, it tumbled almost 60 percent in the demo.
In live + same day metrics, it is averaged 2.3 million viewers and a 0.5 rating. It did get a minor bump with delayed viewing factored in.
Related: The Cool Kids Canceled at Fox
It was ABC's least-watched scripted series, so the cancellation is not completely surprising. ABC did own the show, so many thought it stood a decent shot at being renewed.
However, it seems the network is going in a different direction.
Speechless starred Minnie Driver, John Ross Bowie, Cedric Yarbrough, Mason Cook, Micah Fowler, and Kyla Kenedy.
As for Splitting Up Together, the rom-com was not owned by ABC and was pulling in anemic ratings all season long.

Minnie Driver says ABC’s cancellation of her series Speechless today “feels rather sad,” but she believes the show made a positive impact on the “conversation about family, disability and love.”
“Well now listen,” Driver tweeted this afternoon after ABC announced the show would not be back after Season 3. “Speechless has been cancelled and it feels rather sad. However, I truly believe we have left this conversation about family, disability and love in a better place than we found it. I love all the people I worked with on it, and all of you who loved our show too.”

“Thank you to all the fans, cast and crew who made this show so special,” he tweeted. “It was the greatest three years of my life.

ABC has silenced Speechless, canceling the comedy after three seasons, TVLine has confirmed. The short-lived series followed the everyday exploits of the Dimeo family — most notably J.J., a sharp-witted teenager living with cerebral palsy.
Speechless starred Minnie Driver as high-strung mom Maya, John Ross Bowie as fun-loving dad Jimmy Sr., Mason Cook as middle child Ray, Kyla Kenedy as prank-loving youngest child Dylan and, of course, Micah Fowler as J.J. The cast also included Cedric Yarbrough as J.J.’s “voice,” Kenneth Clements. [Update: Driver reacts to cancellation.]

ABC has rendered Speechless silent today with the Minnie Driver-led series canceled after three seasons. The cancellation is not a surprise, given that Speechless was ABC’s lowest-rated series.
Co-produced by now corporate siblings 20th Century Fox TV and ABC Studios, Speechless starred Driver and John Ross Bowie as the parents of Jj (Micah Fowler), who has cerebral palsy, and his siblings Dylan (Kyla Kennedy) and Ray (Mason Cook). Cedric Yarbrough also starred as Jj’s aide, who serves as his voice.
“It’s telling a story that hasn’t been told on television before,” Driver said during its first panel at Deadline’s The Contenders Emmys a couple years ago. “You genuinely get the after-school special treatment with disability, and that’s not accurate and also annoying. … All of those that feel excluded would like to feel included, and I think the show’s laughter will make you feel included.

Maya Dimeo (Minnie Driver) is a mother who will do anything for her children, especially eldest son Jj (Micah Fowler), who has cerebral palsy. Although she is attempting to get her own business of accessible clothing off the ground, she is also deeply focused on Jj’s future, as he graduated from high school in the third season finale and wants to pursue film school.
In addition to Driver and Fowler, “Speechless” starred Cedric Yarbrough, John Ross Bowie, Mason Cook and Kyla Kenedy. Scott Silveri created the series and served as showrunner; Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar also executive produced. The series was produced by Twentieth Century Fox Television and ABC Studios.

Amy Hopper’s “Parents Inc.” took honors for best film at the sixth annual Easterseals Disability Film Challenge Thursday night, in ceremonies held at the Sony Pictures lot.
Other winners were Carl Hansen, director for “I/O”; Nicole Evans, best actor for “Human Helper”; and “The Vanished,” which took home the awareness award, accepted by Melanie Waldman.
The program was hosted by Nic Novicki, who founded the Film Challenge to empower filmmakers (with or without disabilities) to tell unique stories while providing opportunities for inclusion and representation for people with disabilities (or Pwd). Novicki reminded the enthusiastic audience that Pwd represent about 20% of the population, but only account for 3% of onscreen depictions.
Participating teams had 55 hours to write, shoot and edit a three-to-five-minute short based on an assigned genre. This year, the genre was sci-fi. Their productions were created on the weekend of April 5-7, with more than 200 people with...

By mid-May, the broadcast networks must make some tough calls as to which series will return for the 2019-20 season, and which… won’t.
As that deadline draws near, TVLine is singling out a few “bubble” shows and sizing up their prospects — based in large part on creative strides (and stumbles) and future potential, but also with a requisite nod to cold, hard numbers.
Next up is a comedy about a family dealing with its eldest child’s cerebral palsy… or, rather, that eldest child dealing with their well-intentioned overprotectiveness.

“I think it’s time I make a statement on disability,” Jj Dimeo (Micah Fowler) announces early in this week’s episode of the ABC sitcom Speechless. This is something of a surprise from both Jj and the show itself, both of which have worked very hard to keep Jj from being defined solely by his cerebral palsy. But this is Jj being wisely cynical — it’s for the short he’s making as his NYU film school application — and Speechless recognizing that it’s earned the right after two-and-a-half...

Ten years ago the TV landscape didn’t much lend itself to diversity. Straight, white, able-bodied men dominated the medium. Today, however, the TV terrain is slowly diversifying with women of color, people with disabilities and queer characters — and in the comedy genre especially, stories are becoming more inclusive.
“Any kind of storytelling that seeks to tell fundamental truths about the human condition can be inclusive,” says Justin Simien, who executive produces “Dear White People” for Netflix. “Comedy does have a unique power, however, in that laughter can be so seductive. It allows us to think about and explore those forbidden and difficult little topics that we might not otherwise, by taking the pressure off a bit.”

There are no words to describe The Bachelor star Nick Viall's acting debut. In fact, you could say we're...speechless. Viall appears in tonight's episode of ABC's Speechless as Tyson, a new actor friend Jj (Micah Fowler) makes on a college visit who he enlists to help him out of a jam. Nick Viall is returning to ABC. No, not as the Bachelor again, as our reigning Bachelor is set to guest star on one of the network's comedies. That's right, Nick, 36, is making the jump from reality to scripted. Nick will appear in an upcoming episode of Speechless, the network's sophomore comedy, E! News has confirmed. And no, he's not playing himself. Nick will take on the role of Tyson, a hunky B-movie actor who is a little too method. The first episode of “Speechless” Season 2 starts with a flurry. Part of the action comes from the plot, as the Dimeo family wakens to the startling revelation that their house has been tented for fumigation. In a panic, Maya (Minnie Driver), Jimmy (John Ross Bowie), and their children, Ray (Mason Cook), Dylan (Kyla Kenedy), and J.J. (Micah Fowler) roll out of bed and go rushing out into the street wearing nothing but their pajamas.
The whirlwind of activity also complements a mad rush of situational, verbal, and physical jokes. Starting inside Ray’s imagination, the cold open unveils our newly dating middle-child is being “incepted” by Dylan, who’s whispering negative thoughts into his ear in order to ruin his dreams (quite literally).
