The show has faced interruptions in the past, but Hulu's renewal for seasons 13 and 14 shows commitment. Though the future beyond season 14 remains unclear, longtime fans of the sci-fi sitcom have plenty of hilarious stories to look forward to in the meantime.

Futurama season 12 now officially has a release date. Initially premiering on Fox over two decades ago, the popular sci-fi sitcom officially ended in 2013 with season 10 and a befitting finale for the sitcom’s main protagonist. However, 10 years after the show ended, Hulu revived the show for season 11, which premiered in mid-2023, and following its conclusion, the streamer announced that the sitcom would be returning once again for season 12.

One thing that quickly became clear in the early "Futurama" episodes is that not every member of the Planet Express crew has the same importance. The show largely revolves around the big three of Fry, Leela, and Bender, with Professor Farnsworth right behind them. In a separate tier are Amy, Hermes, and Zoidberg, who are usually present in any given example but only rarely get their time in the spotlight. Amy didn't really lead the A-plot of an episode until season 7's "That Darn Katz," for instance, although the early seasons' "Put Your Head On My Shoulders" and "Amazon Women in the Mood" also give her some interesting material to work with. Zoidberg also rarely gets to be the main character, although he can take solace in how he still gets way more focus than poor Scruffy.

Hermes, meanwhile, is a character usually stuck hanging around in the episode's B-plot.

Futurama season 11 explores a long-running mystery involving Hermes and his knowledge of voodoo and zombies, which ties back to a 2011 episode. The recent episode "Rage Against the Vaccine" tackles the Covid-19 pandemic, with the gang working to find a cure for the fictional Explovid-23 virus. Scruffy's zombie storyline, revealed in season 8, suggests that his zombification occurred between season 7, episode 1 and season 8, episode 4.

Conrad Hermes isn't a character with a particularly mysterious background, but Futurama season 11 finally pays off a weird Hermes reveal after 12 years. Futurama is a series full of one-off non-sequitur jokes, with many odd lines of dialogue not tying into anything in the show's lore. Although one strange line from Hermes in Futurama season 11, episode 7 may seem like an instance of this, it turns out that it actually ties into an old Hermes mystery from over a decade ago.

The reception of these movies led to a three-season revival of Futurama, with seasons 5, 6, and 7 airing between 2010 and 2013. There was radio silence for almost a decade before a 20-episode Futurama season 8 revival was announced by Hulu in 2022.

Futurama season 11 is ready to blast onto Hulu this summer. The animated series, which was created by The Simpsons' Matt Groening in 1999, follows pizza delivery guy Philip J. Fry (Billy West) who is accidentally frozen and thaws out 1,000 years in the future where he gets a job in cargo delivery at a company run by his elderly descendant. The series went off the air in 2013 after 140 episodes that have alternately been divided into seven seasons or ten depending on the distributor.

Today, Hulu unveiled a special video announcement for their revival of Futurama season 11.

The video, which opens with a banner reading "Hulurama" is a brief 13-second affair that includes wordless clips of the antics of Fry and returning characters Bender (John Dimaggio) and Leela (Katey Sagal). This all ends with the announcement that the first episode of 10 will air on July 24. The remainder of this season's episodes will air weekly on Mondays.

The first time "Futurama" audiences saw Scruffy the Janitor, he was standing in the background, quietly doing his job in the episode "My Three Suns." Later, in "Anthology of Interest I," Scruffy was brought into the building's Accusing Parlor (a room specifically built for whodunnit scenarios) where he and Leela (Katey Sagal) both admitted to never having seen each other before. Initially, Scruffy was a background character, only speaking to provide a quick giggle; he couldn't fix the building's boiler because of a "schedule conflict," and a more intense interest in this month's issue of Zero-g Juggs.
