Well Go USA has landed North American rights for Dutch action thriller Invasion about a daring military operation in the wake of a hostile attack on the Caribbean islands of Aruba and Curacao.

Studiocanal, which is handling international rights, said it was also in the process of closing deals to Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.

The movie is a co-produced by Amsterdam-based Storytellers and Studiocanal company Dutch Film Works.

Director Bobby Boermans (Mocro Maffia, Goldon Hour) reunites with Storytellers having previously collaborated on the drama series High-Flyers teaming up with The Royal Dutch Airforce.

The drama unfolds in the wake of an unexpected attack on the Dutch overseas territories of Curaçao and Aruba by a neighbouring dictatorship.

Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece is finally here. Based on the popular managa of the same name by Eiichiro Oda story of One Piece follows Luffy (Iñaki Godoy), who is inspired by his childhood idol “Red-Haired” Shanks (Peter Gadiot) he makes his own crew and names them Straw Hat, and together they go out on an adventure to find the One Piece treasure which will make the King of the Pirates. Created by Eiichiro Oda and Steven Maeda, One Piece also stars Emily Rudd, Mackenyu, Taz Skylar, and Jacob Gibson. The Netflix original fantasy series The Letter for the King debuted in 2020, but the streamer has yet to release a season 2. Based on the novel of the same name by Tonke Dragt, The Letter for the King follows a young squire who is tasked with delivering an important message to the king, who lives across the perilous mountains. Offering a more family-friendly alternative to fantasy shows like Game of Thrones, The Letter for the King is an example of Netflix's growing young adult programming and continues its long line of high-profile genre series. The Dutch and British co-production blended its fantasy elements with broadly appealing coming-of-age tropes.

While the show stuck faithfully to the beloved Dutch novel, the series received a mixed critical reception (via Rotten Tomatoes) from the English-speaking world. Despite that, season 1 of The Letter for the King snagged six Daytime Emmys, including Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Single Camera Editing.

Jessica Alexander, who starred in the recent psychological horror movie A Banquet (pictured above) and the dystopian thriller Glasshouse, is now playing the lead role in Fallen, a supernatural series being made for the Brazilian streaming service Globoplay. Fallen is now filming, and given the fact that most of the cast are not Brazilian I have a feeling the show is going to be available on other services than Globoplay at some point.

Back in Rotterdam with his Taiwanese-Dutch production Dead & Beautiful, the IFFR regular David Verbeek had a world premiere of his genre-bending drama (which screened in the Limelight section) whose plot centers around five uber-rich young people and their attempts to feel real life by “taking turns”.

The rules of the game are allegedly simple. “Turns” happen on weekends, when one of the five tries to impress the rest of the gang by organizing an unforgettable, unique experience. Any genuine emotion – extreme happiness, deep fear or immense sadness is a welcome reaction. But, it turns out that it’s very difficult to impress a billionaire, and almost impossible to impress four billionaires at the same time. Money alone isn’t enough to ignite fire in any of them, and the race for the best show begins.

As cinemas around the world close, never have we been more reliant on good new additions to the world of streaming, with most of us stuck indoors desperately wanting something new to indulge in. Well, this weekend Netflix are launching The Letter for the King, a brand new fantasy series about a group of youngsters who risk everything to deliver an important message to the monarch. To celebrate the release we took part in a unique press junket for the film, interviewing the cast via Skype, and from the comfort of our very own living room (excuse the bland wallpaper background). Netflix’s The Letter for the King adapts Tonke Dragt’s classic fantasy novel as an awe-inspiring television series.

The Letter for the King is a Netflix fantasy offering that, in the recent wake of The Witcher’s popularity, seems so abundantly tailor-made for transitional viewing that it won’t require any of its famed algorithms for a suggestion.

Much like The Witcher, Netflix’s The Letter for the King is based on a book, in this case key female fantasy writer Tonke Dragt’s 1962 Dutch novel, De brief voor de Koning, an acclaimed, million-plus-selling quasi-medieval story about a young squire who becomes entrusted with the delivery of the titular memo, on which the fate of the entire kingdom hangs. The book – reprinted frequently and in several languages – has been adapted for musical theater and had a 2008 movie adaptation released in its native Netherlands.

Netflix has launched the first trailer for its new series ‘The Letter for the King’ and it features a few recognisable faces.

The story is based on the best-selling novel of the same name and focuses on a young boy who holds the fate of the kingdom in his hands when he embarks on a quest to deliver a secret message.

Alain de Levita is producing the Dutch-Belgian picture through his Levitate Film banner.
