Following his multi-awarded short “We Shall Overcome”, Kelvin Shum now presents his feature debut “Deliverance”, a family drama that also unfolds as a psychological thriller.
Deliverance is screening at Asian Pop Up Cinema
Nicole returns home to Hong Kong to work in a hospital, after being away for 15 years, and she is reunited with her brothers. However, she still clings to the shattered memory from the night of her mother’s passing, continuing to be in doubt regarding her death, despite the fact that any kind of human intervention has been ruled out. Through hypnosis sessions with her big brother Joseph, who also teaches criminal psychology, she tries to remember exactly what happened, but as more memories come to the fore, she starts doubting her brothers’ behavior, while her grip on reality becomes thinner and thinner. As the movie progresses, the questions pile up. Is Nicole losing it from the...

It is fair to say that Hong Kong cinema has been in a slump for a number of years now. Even with an uptick in the quality of productions recently, genuinely good output has been few and far between and, with the sanctions and regulations being put in place by the Mainland, its future seems worrisome now more than ever. “Legendary in Action!” from first timers Li Ho and actor-turned-director Justin Cheung thus comes as a timely, introspective feature about the Hong Kong film industry.
Legendary in Action is screening on New York Asian Film Festival
Bill “Tiger” Cheung was once a promising aspect, winning the Best Director award at the Bucheon Film Festival with his first work, but an early-career flop relegated him to directing low-budget titillating shorts to make ends meet. 2022 brings Far East Film back to its historical dimension. The Feff is once again what it has always been since 1999, but it also carries the imprint of all the latest changes: it is an augmented festival, more inclusive, and even more curious. If in the last two years Far East Film was forced to reinventing itself and review its formula with different parameters, these last few months have generated a sudden and wonderful acceleration: a wave of new energy, a vital frenzy which has shaped the twenty-fourth edition.

The romantic comedy “My Indian Boyfriend” is the second movie by Hong Kong-based director and dance instructor Sri Kishore, and the first shot in the country he has called home for more than a decade. With it, he has tried to create the first Bollywood-style Hong Kong movie in history.
“My Indian Boyfriend” is screening at Osaka Asian Film Festival
Krishna (Karan Cholia in an over the top Bollywood performance), a good-for-nothing young Indian man who lives in Hong Kong with his mother and father, falls in love with Jasmine (Shirley Chan Yan-Yin), a Chinese model and dancer who moves to his apartment building. The problem is that she is promised to Richard (Justin Cheung), a slimy rich older man whom she doesn’t love.
“My Indian Boyfriend” is a mess. There’s no doubt about it. The story makes no sense most of the time, neither do the relationships between the characters.

There’s something immensely satisfying about a prison escape movie. A group of outlaws planning a breakout only for it to all go to hell come freedom day is a reliable formula for success. Part of what makes such movies so entertaining is the loveable crooks behind the plotting, which is precisely what you get with Ho Pong Mak’s “Breakout Brothers”. The prison-break film combines the best of action and comedy to be a thrilling romp full of memorable characters.

The revival of category III rated Chinese erotic cinema continues with “Due West: Our Sex Journey”, based on the popular internet writings of Xiang Xi Murakami Haruki. Like the recent global hit “Sex & Zen: Extreme Ecstasy”, the film was shot in 3D, and comes from the same team, again written by Mark Wu, who also worked on the screenplay for “Lan Kwai Fong”, and who here makes his directorial debut. Taking the male lead is Justin Cheung, a man with plenty of genre experience, having starred in both “Sex and Zen” and the ridiculous but enjoyable “The 33D Invader”, backed by Wu himself, plus, of course, an impressive number of attractive actresses from across Asia, including Jeana Ho (“Hong Kong Ghost Stories”), Celia Kwok, Angelina Zhang, Daniella Wang, and Japanese Av idol Kizaki Jessica. Justin Cheung stars and narrates as Frankie, a young Hong Kong man brought up in a strict middle class family,...
