Has had a passion for photography since he was 13, while on a trip to North Dakota, when his father introduced him to the concept of SLR photography. For his high school graduation, he was going to ask his parents, Wayne and Marie Johnsen, to rent a video camera from Captain Video at 1023 State Street in Santa Barbara (the first video rental business in the United States as a result of winning a legal battle. The location is a Subway© restaurant as of 2017) in order to videotape (eg, "film") his Grad Nite at Disneyland, interviewing graduates from other schools and just filming while walking around the park. Mike decided against it, because he didn't feel like carrying around such a heavy piece of equipment, a decision that he regrets to this day.

Frequently says to female friends (and sometimes even to his mother) "don't act so surprised, your highness", if it's relevant. They rarely catch the reference, and he never explains it.

Went to high school with Cynthia Ireland (younger sister of Kathy Ireland), Clare Carey, Bentley Mitchum (grandson of Robert Mitchum) and Heidi Epper.

His mother (born on the same day as Lynn Loring and one day after Robyn Hilton) had a morbid fear of flying to the extent that when she immigrated from French Morocco she was screaming and white knuckles in terror. So, to conquer her fear, she earned her pilot license in 1978.

Legally changed his name to Michael Wayne Edgar Johansen on August 29, 1997.
