Following his exit from Yellowstone, Kevin Costner moved on to a different Western project, which premiered in 2024 but is now available on streaming. Costner starred as John Dutton III in the first four and a half seasons of Taylor Sheridan's popular TV show. However, in between parts 1 and 2 of Yellowstone season 5, news broke that the actor was leaving the series. Given that Costner's John was the face of the neo-Western drama, his exit came as a big surprise to many.
Taylor Sheridan's upcoming Yellowstone spinoffs and prequels include 1923 season 2, The Madison, 6666, 1944, and an untitled Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler sequel series.
In the months following the announcement of Costner's Yellowstone exit, more details regarding why he left emerged. However, many were also concerned with how Sheridan would write John out of the series. The Yellowstone season 5, part 2 premiere revealed John's fate, and the show was never the same.

Kevin Costner’s anticipated new Western film series kicked off with “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1,” which hit theaters last summer as the first of four parts and is now streaming on Netflix. And the movie boasts a pretty massive ensemble cast of characters.
The “Yellowstone” actor invested $38 million of his own money into the passion project, which charts the United States’ Western expansion pre- and post-Civil War over the course of 15 years.
The first film in the franchise establishes four storylines and sets the stage for the subsequent films. Below, TheWrap created a cheat sheet to help you keep track of each of the characters and their overlapping plot lines throughout this American saga.
“Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2” still doesn’t have a release date.

“Dances With Wolves” director Kevin Costner’s new multi- part movie series "Horizon: An American Saga", is rated 'R' for "violence, nudity and sexuality," chronicling a 15-year span of pre-and post-'Civil War' settlement of the ‘American Old West’, now streaming Chapter 1, on Netflix:
"A lot of times we measure ourselves against other generations," said Costner about his new film series.
"I think about what was at stake. How did people survive?
“There's a rawness and an unpredictability about it. I'm haunted by that."
Costner, in addition to directing, stars in "Horizon", alongside his son Hayes Costner, who plays the young Costner.
Cast also includes Sienna Miller…
…Sam Worthington, Jamie Campbell Bower, Luke Wilson, Thomas Haden Church, Michael Rooker, Jena Malone, Isabelle Fuhrman, Alejandro Edda...
...Tatanka Means, Tom Payne, Abbey Lee, Wasé Chief, Tim Guinee, Michael Angarano…
....Jon Beavers, Glynn Turman, Kathleen Quinlan, Giovanni Ribisi…
…Colin Cunningham, Scott Haze, Angus Macfadyen and Douglas Smith.

One major character change to Horizon: An American Saga could have prevented various problems co-writer/director Kevin Costner is now facing with future films in the series. Horizon: An American Saga was released in June 2024, and was meant to be the first entry in a four-movie series. However, reviews for Horizon Chapter 1 were not strong, and the film has a disappointing score of 51% on Rotten Tomatoes. Additionally, it did not perform well at the box office, only earning $38 million on a massive budget of $100 million. Therefore, the future of Costner's Western epic is now uncertain.

Against the odds, Kevin Costner is still planning to finish his four-movie “Horizon” saga, he said at a Deadline FYC event this weekend.
The first installment of the ambitious series, which tells a story of westward expansion in the 1860s with a sprawling cast and high production values, flopped at the box office this summer, grossing $38.2 million against a $50 million budget. The first film’s financial plans scuttled plans for a theatrical release of Part 2, which is in the can and awaiting release, though no plans have been announced. And Costner started filming on Part 3 this spring, but it sounds like he doesn’t have the funds to finish it yet. But he’s working on it — and Part 4, too. He’s not ready to let “Horizon” slip out of view.

Prime Video’s “Killer Heat” is a new mystery thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Nick Bali, a private investigator. It shows Nick traveling to Greece to investigate the shocking death of a wealthy man named Leo Vardakis. Nick is hired by Penelope, Leo’s identical twin brother’s wife. The film takes place entirely on a scenic island and relies on the moodiness of the setting as it unravels new bits of information. It seems heavily inspired by the Hollywood noir classics that redefined the genre conventions decades ago. Fans of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and movies like “Killer Heat,” featuring slow-burn mysteries, can check out this thriller on Prime Video.

A good tasty noir, like “Love Lies Bleeding,” always feels contemporary, even if set in the past; that’s because it should feel as urgent as the love-and-death stakes it’s about. “Killer Heat,” on the other hand, while not quite so old-fashioned that it creaks, definitely plays like a mirage of detective noirs you’ve seen before. To start with: Could there be a worse title? It makes the movie sound like some straight-to-tape potboiler from the ’80s starring Jim Belushi and Daphne Zuniga. “Killer Heat” opens with the voice of its star, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who has a way of sounding like Keanu Reeves’ brainier brother), delivering one of those logy “hardboiled” philosophical nuggets to the audience (“The Icarus myth was set on the island of Crete. And apparently no one there had learned much from his story…”).

Plot: A thrilling, contemporary mystery in classic noir style, Killer Heat follows private eye Nick Bali, an American expat in Greece, hired to investigate the supposed accidental death of young shipping magnate Leo Vardakis on the island of Crete. The victim’s sister-in-law doesn’t believe the official police report. But what exactly happened to Leo, and why? Despite the sun-drenched beauty of its exotic Mediterranean locale, Nick finds darkness at every turn: where the rich and powerful Vardakis family rule like gods, where jealousies run deep, and anyone could be a suspect.
Review: The hard-boiled detective movie has been a trope since the early days of cinema. The term “noir” has taken on a meaning in modern film that has turned into a cliche itself. While some movie characters fulfill the narrative role of the protagonist, another character steals the show with charisma and theatrics, making them the true stars. Movies where supporting characters are better than the heroes have been just as successful as those that let the central character shine, with a different balance in character focus only making it better. Sometimes, the villain is doubtlessly the true star, driving the entire story when the protagonists are living standard lives.

"For some people jealousy is a lot like love. Maybe that's just how I see it..." Prime Video has revealed an official trailer for a crime thriller film called Killer Heat, set on the gorgeous Greek island of Crete. Based on the short story "The Jealousy Man" by Jo Nesbø. This film is debuting streaming on Prime Video in a few weeks, skipping theaters entirely with no festival premieres either. Hmmm. "Jealousy can drive you to the edge." The film follows twin brothers who find themselves in a dangerous love triangle on the island when an American P.I. tries to find out what happened in the accidental death of a young shipping magnate. The investigation is given to "The Jealousy Man," a wounded detective. Despite the sun-drenched beauty of its exotic Mediterranean locale, Nick finds darkness at every turn: where the rich and powerful Vardakis family rule like gods,...

How blessed are we to have a whole six hours of Kevin Costner’s mythopoetic Horizon already make their way to (some) audiences, especially when this project has been on his wish list since 1988? I often try to demystify festival viewing experiences by supplying an honest, sometimes critical lens through which a reader can see the cracks in their glossy surfaces. Nevertheless, in the case of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2, I’d own every bit of privilege that brought me to its Venice premiere––in a rather small venue, on the very last afternoon, with little fanfare––not least because Costner’s multi-chapter saga is so difficult to see on the big screen. It’s not just the scale of storytelling or the fact that the Hollywood legend sponsored a huge chunk of its production himself, not the runtime and two more planned installments to (hopefully) come––it’s...

Six hours into Kevin Costner’s unfussy and digestible Horizon: An American Saga, it does feel like some crucial oversights have been made. Kevin Costner might be the mastermind behind his Western epic, but Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2 needs more of one actor who overshadows his performance during Chapter 1. The idea for the Western epic began for Costner in 1988, leading to him directing, writing, producing, and starring in the planned four-part saga. Despite Chapter 1's poor performance at the box office, earning just $36.1 million against a $50 million budget, Horizon: An American Saga's cast delivers plenty of strong performances, bringing the Civil War era Midwest to life.
While Horizon - Chapter 1 received lukewarm reviews, with many critical of its plodding pace and unfocused story, the performances from Costner and other stars did garner praise. Some of the more memorable portrayals include Costner as horse trader Hayes Ellison, Sam Worthington as Union soldier Trent Gephardt, and Sienna Miller as widowed survivor Frances Kittredge. While these characters offer intriguing dynamics throughout their respective storylines,...

Just a few months after the first three-hour installment of Kevin Costner’s legacy project had its lackluster premiere at Cannes, his second slab of Western fudge has launched in Venice. There are more snow-topped mountains in Montana, more bars bathed in golden gaslight, more shoot-outs, more lines of wagons moving ever westward ho. Costner obviously loves classic Westerns, including his own — he allows himself a callback to Wyatt Earp — and these are all treasurable, time-honored motifs of the genre. Piling them high over hours and hours does not, however, mean that the result will be all the more classically magnificent. It just means there will be a lot of it, whatever it is.
What it is, unfortunately, is a collection of anecdotes lying side by side, never cohering — so far, anyway — into the comprehensive panorama of the turbulent making of America that Costner and his co-writer, John Baird, must have envisaged.

Kevin Costner has addressed his intentions for Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 3. The movie is part of what was an intended four-part Western epic directed and co-written by star Kevin Costner. While the first two chapters are already completed, Chapter 1 only earned $36.1 million worldwide against its $50 million budget, leading the upcoming Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2 to be indefinitely delayed from its planned release date just over a month later.
Deadline shared a video of Kevin Costner speaking at the Venice International Film Festival, where he gave an emotional speech about the future of Horizon: An American Saga. In addition to teasing how the storyline of Chapter 2 will be even "harder" while Chapter 3 will be "devastating," he revealed that he plans to continue making Chapter 3, even though he does not know how it will happen. Ill be honest, I dont entirely understand Kevin Costners Horizon project. Im not really one to judge whether it makes business sense to make a multi-part Western saga for theatrical release in 2024; as a critic, my stake isnt in the world of profits and losses. When Costner used all his pull to put a project like this on the big screen, I should be able to applaud him, purely out of my love for the cinematic experience. Instead, after seeing Horizon: Chapter 2, Im still scratching my head and wondering why this wasnt television.

Yellowstone star Kevin Costner will return to the Western genre with his film series Horizon: An American Saga, the first part of which is set to arrive in theaters June 28. The first film in a planned four-arc installment premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival to an 11-minute 40-second standing ovation, which brought the actor to tears.
Costner, who stars in and directs the Western installments, has been wanting to bring this project to the screen since 1988 when he started dreaming it up. He cowrote it with Jon Baird. The Dances With Wolves star revealed that production has begun for the third film and that he has plans to make a fourth. The second part of the series will follow the first with a theatrical release this summer.

Despite box office struggles, Kevin Costner remains optimistic about completing the Horizon: An American Saga franchise. Chapter 1 failed to earn back its budget, leading to Chapter 2 losing its theatrical release. Costner is determined to finish the series, already beginning production on Chapter 3 and planning to complete filming for the saga in 2025.
Kevin Costner still has hope for the future of the Horizon: An American Saga franchise, amid serious box office struggles. The first of a four-part movie series, Chapter 1 was released on June 28. It failed to earn back its budget at the box office, having earned just $34.3 million on a $50 million budget. To make matters worse, Cosnter expected Chapter 2 to be released on August 16, but Chapter 1's financial challenges led to the distributor declining to send it to theaters. While it appears that Chapter 2 will never have a theatrical release, the other movies in the franchise are also in danger.

Our top streaming pick this week, “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1,” is Kevin Costner’s spiritual sequel to his seven-time Oscar winner “Dances With Wolves.” The awards chances for “Horizon” look dimmer than “Dances,” though, especially after the passion project flopped in theaters.
The film is a Western epic following the arduous journeys of settlers and outlaws as they try to reach the frontier town of Horizon. In addition to Costner, who plays a stoic horse trader named Hayes Ellison, the sprawling cast includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Abbey Lee, and Luke Wilson, among many others. The release of in-the-can second part has been postponed indefinitely, but now that “Chapter 1” can potentially gin up some interest with its streaming release on Max, maybe “Chapter 2” will get a new date soon.

Costner's Western franchise struggled at the box office with poor reviews, but hopes are high for its success via streaming. Following a disappointing theatrical release, Chapter 1's streaming debut could secure financing for future franchise installments. Chapter 1 weaves various storylines set in the mid-1800s, potentially setting the stage for further movies in Costner's Western franchise.
Kevin Costner had trouble launching a new planned Western movie franchise in 2024, but the sequels could be saved now that Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 is now streaming. The director and star of Horizon: An American Saga spent years developing this passion project, with the idea for the franchise expanding into four different movies. Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 is the first installment of the new Western franchise for Costner. His faith in the film was so substantial that he was willing to walk away from finishing Yellowstone to create this replacement series.

Kevin Costner‘s period Western Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 has a streaming date.
The first chapter in the former Yellowstone star’s film saga will release on Max on Aug. 23.
Following the film disappointing at the box office — Chapter 1, which runs three hours and one minute, opened to just $11 million over the June 28-30 weekend — Costner’s Territory Pictures and distribution partner New Line Cinema decided to pause on releasing Horizon: Chapter 2. The second installment was pulled from a planned Aug. 16 theater release in order to give audiences the opportunity to discover the first installment on PVOD and Max.
Chapter 1 debuted in the home on Premium VOD July 16 while it remained in theaters, but at that time, a Max date had not been announced. The switch-up in what was an ambitious release plan was in hopes of allowing more time to grow the audience, as the first film sports a $100 million price tag.

Will Horizon's New VOD Success Be Enough To Save Kevin Costner's Western Epic After $32.9M Disaster?
Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 struggled at the box office but is finding success on VOD platforms. The 3-hour runtime may have deterred theatergoers, leading to stronger VOD performance and potential for franchise revival. Costner's upcoming sequels may face challenges, but his VOD success could pave the way for a streaming deal to save the series.
Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 has finally started to gain traction with its video-on-demand release. The first installment of Costner's new Western franchise severely underperformed at the summer 2024 box office, which resulted in the direct follow-up sequel Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2 to be pulled from its set theatrical release date of August 16. Delaying the release of Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 2 might save Kevin Costner's plans for the franchise. Home viewing may suit Horizon better than theaters, giving audiences a chance to digest the first part. A release date for Chapter 2 has yet to be decided.
It may seem like a setback, but Kevin Costner delaying the release of Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2 might save his franchise plans. Costner may not have as many Westerns to his name as Clint Eastwood or John Wayne, but he's still very closely tied to the genre. Kevin Costner Westerns like Dances with Wolves or Open Range are some of the best to come out of the genre following its Golden Age, and even Yellowstone is a Western of sorts.
With the Horizon saga, Costner is setting out on his most ambitious and risky project to date. The star/director plans to make four movies,...

Warning: Major spoilers for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga below!
Charlize Theron makes a surprise cameo at the end of Furiosa using a deleted scene from Mad Max: Fury Road. Director George Miller opted against CGI de-aging for Theron in the prequel due to tech limitations. Anya Taylor-Joy impressively embodies the Furiosa character in the 2024 prequel.
Charlize Theron has a surprise cameo of sorts in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and it's not from the Fury Road montage that closes the film. Mad Max: Fury Road spent over a decade in development hell, and the movie's shoot was legendarily tough. Not only did it result in the best Mad Max movie, but this 2015 sequel was one of the best action movies of the decade, period. While developing Fury Road, Miller developed two prequel stories alongside it. One followed Max and is dubbed The Wasteland, while Furiosa detailed the origin of Charlize Theron's Imperator.

Chapter 2 of Kevin Costner’s Western epic Horizon: An American Saga won’t be released in August after all.
Nobody can accuse Kevin Costner of being lazy. He has financed, produced, co-written, directed and co–starred in Horizon: An American Saga, which was conceived as a four film series, each one pushing the three hour mark.
Chapter 1 was released in the UK last month, and the plan was to release Chapter 2 in August.
However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the second film has been pulled from the release schedule. The reason given is the lacklustre box office reciepts for the first film, which took $20 million against a budget of $100 million.
It seems the plan is to encourage people to discover Horizon at home, so anticipation can build for the second film.
