Deadline reports that Eddie Murphy is set to star in Blue Falcon, an action comedy scripted by Chad St. John (London Has Fallen). Murphy will be playing a “retired superspy who heads for the destination wedding of his estranged son, and finds himself in proximity with his archrival.” It makes me think of that Andy Warhol quote: “In the future, everyone will play a retired superspy.” I think that’s how it went.
Blue Falcon will be produced by Davis Films’ John Davis, Cliff Roberts through Syndicate Entertainment, and Murphy and Charisse Hewitt-Webster through Eddie Murphy Productions.

Suppose you notice an extra groove in Amazon MGM Studios‘s step. In that case, it’s because they’ve just announced plans for an untitled George Clinton biopic starring Eddie Murphy as the legendary funk musician and leader of the Parliament Funkadelic. The project finds Murphy reuniting with Dreamgirls director Bill Condon, whose next feature, Kiss of the Spider Woman, stars Jennifer Lopez, Diego Luna, and Tonatiuh.
Murphy played James’ Thunder’ Early in 2006’s Dreamgirls, an R&b and soul singer inspired by James Brown, Jackie Wilson, and Marvin Gaye. Dreamgirls, starring Eddie Murphy, Beyoncé, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Hudson, Danny Glover, and Anika Noni Rose, was an awards darling in the year of its release, with Hudson taking home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, among other accolades.

The “Dreamgirls” team is getting back together.
Director Bill Condon has signed on to direct Amazon MGM Studios’ untitled George Clinton biopic, which will star Eddie Murphy as the Parliament-Funkadelic leader.
The script is currently being written by Virgil Williams, who co-wrote this year’s awards contender “The Piano Teacher,” based on an original draft by Max Werner. The project was initiated by Catherine Davis, a Clinton fan, who brought the idea to Murphy.
The movie is based on Clinton’s 2017 memoir “Brothas Be, Yo Like George, Ain’t That Funkin’ Kinda Hard On You?” According to the official release, “The film is the untold story of influential pioneer of funk and his tumultuous journey to founding musical collective Parliament-Funkadelic. Known for their outlandish sci-fi themes, surreal sounds and psychedelic shows, Clinton and his band’s wild road redefined music and culture.”

Ed Helms has signed on to co-star with Jennifer Garner in the Netflix comedy “Family Leave,” with McG joining as director and producer.
Garner, who also serves as a producer, has been attached to the film since Feb. 2021. Adam Sztykiel is handling the rewrite of Victoria Strouse’s script, which is based on “Bedtime for Mommy” by Amy Krouse Rosenthal.
The film follows Jess and Bill Walker, a couple determined to keep their family close as their kids are growing older and less connected to one another. One day, after a chance meeting with an astrological reader, they wake up to find that they’ve switched bodies with a family living on the other side of the world. Unfortunately, the body swap happens to take place on the most important day in their individual lives, with a promotion, college interview, record deal and soccer tryout on the table.

Contrary to popular belief that insists upon their demise, first-rate romantic comedies are still alive and well. Sadly, Jason Winer’s perplexing farce “Ode to Joy” — on the misadventures of a tedious male lead with a self-sabotaging biology that opposes happiness — makes it harder than ever to dispute the mourners of the supposedly vanished genre. Humorless to a paralyzing extent, this joyless effort (developed under the title “The Pursuit of Unhappiness”) illustrates how a bad-on-paper idea can turn into something cringe-inducing onscreen. It also reminds that pulling off a smart, intoxicating happily-ever-after tale with sexual chemistry, refined contemporary jokes and lovably quirky sidekicks (à la “The Big Sick” or “Crazy Rich Asians”) is much tougher than we often imagine.
Inspired by a true story featured on the “This American Life” podcast, the labored romp follows the Brooklyn librarian Charlie, played by a deliberately monotonous Martin Freeman (“The Hobbit”) sans an emotional range.

Biodiesel and beekeeping. Those are two things to look forward to in Weird Like Us, the comedy pilot Fox has just ordered.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the single-camera series revolves around a duo of "biodiesel-driving, backyard beekeeping, counterculture rebels who face a family crisis when their own children rebel — by going mainstream."
The comedy comes from The Colbert Show writer Max Werner and actor Ed Helms. Werner is set to write the pilot, with Helms serving as executive producer.

The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming. The Jill Soloway-created "Transparent" is nominated for New Series, where it will go against "The Affair," "The Knick," "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective." "Transparent" and "Silicon Valley" are also up for Comedy Series, going against "Louie," "Veep" and "Orange Is The New Black." Lest you panic...

Spike Jonze’s philosophical sci-fi love story Her, and Billy Ray’s harrowing true-life hostage saga Captain Phillips earned best original and adapted screenplays, respectively, from the Writers Guild Awards on Saturday.
In the original category, Her was facing its four rivals for the Oscar: American Hustle, Blue Jasmine, Dallas Buyers Club, and Nebraska, so its victory can be seen as a strong harbinger of where the Academy Award could go on March 2. In anecdotal sampling of Academy members, EW’s Prize Fighter has also determined that Her is far and away the front-runner for this category.

Tonight, the Writers Guild of America presented their awards for excellence in film and television for 2013. All eyes were on their top two categories, Original Screenplay and Adapted Screenplay, and while the former went to Spike Jonze’s incredible Her as expected, the latter went to Billy Ray’s Captain Phillips, which was completely out of the blue.
Her was widely expected to win due to its immense popularity throughout awards season, taking 20 screenplay wins from groups such as the HFPA and Bfca. However, Captain Phillips was a complete surprise given that it had not managed to win a single screenplay award prior to tonight, but as I’ve said before, it was going to be hard to tell which nominee was the favorite given the fact that the disqualified 12 Years a Slave has been the clear frontrunner throughout the season. Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul were upset in their respective acting categories, but Breaking Bad won the night’s top prize, taking home its first Emmy for Best Drama. It was an unpredictable night in several major categories: In addition to The Newsroom’s Jeff Daniels taking home the trophy for Best Actor in a Drama and Boardwalk Empire’s Bobby Cannavale winning for Supporting Actor, Veep’s Tony Hale and Nurse Jackie’s Merritt Wever were surprise winners — Wever was so shocked that she practically ran off the stage without delivering an acceptance speech.

Stars: Victoria Justice, Chelsea Handler, Thomas McDonell, Jane Levy, Jackson Nicoll | Written by | Directed by
Sounding like a cross between Adventures in Babysitting and Baby’s Day Out, Funsize stars Victoria Justice (Nickelodeon’s Victorious) as a smart young girl whose plans to attend the high school event of the year are spoiled when she gets stuck babysitting her little brother. Just when she thinks it can’t get any worse, he disappears! Now, with the help of three unusual friends, including Jane Levy from the fantastic quirky TV series Suburgatory, she must find the little troublemaker before her mum (Handler) discovers that he’s missing.
Given it’s pedigree – the film was helmed by Chuck creator Josh Schwartz, who makes his directorial debut, and written by Max Werner who worked on The Colbert Report – I can honestly say I was expecting big things from Funsize. Even more...

Halloween comedy Fun Size was not so fun for critics.
The movie stars Victoria Justice (TV’s Victorious) as teen Wren, who has to babysit her younger brother on Halloween. After he disappears into a group of trick-or-treaters, Wren, her best friend and two nerds try to find her brother before her mom finds out he’s missing.
The first film directed by Hart of Dixie producer Josh Schwartz and the first feature film written by Max Werner (TV’s The Colbert Report), Fun Size grossed only $9 million despite being released wide in theaters.
Critics could have been the movie’s downfall. USA Today‘s Claudia Puig said, “There’s little fun to be had in this foolish Halloween comedy that generates many more eye rolls than laughs.”

Who knows, in a few years time Fun Size may prove memorable for having kick-started the big screen careers of its stars Victoria Justice and Jane Levy, but there’s certainly nothing memorable about the film in its own right. Justice (star of TV’s Victorious) plays Wren, a nerdy but beautiful teen who is saddled with looking after her mischievous 8-year-old brother Albert on Halloween, meaning that she and her best friend April (Levy – star of Suburgatory and the forthcoming Evil Dead remake) can’t attend Aaron Riley’s Halloween party. Who’s he you ask? “Aaron Riley – God. Stud. Legend,” we’re reliably informed (without a hint of irony) as Aaron drives his convertible sports car in windswept slow motion. Things go from bad to worse for Wren (and the audience) when Albert goes missing, prompting a frantic search for him that inevitably only causes more trouble.

And finally, Ben Affleck's "Argo" topped the box-office weekend after three weeks. The surefire Oscar contender took in $12.3 million for the No. 1 spot, beating new releases such as "Cloud Atlas" and "Fun Size."

"Cloud Atlas" from the Wachowskis ("The Matrix" films) and Tom Tykwer ("Run Lola Run") took in $9.5 million for the No. 3 spot. The Tom Hanks/Halle Berry-starrer was budgeted for $100 million, so this film, as creative-forward as it was, flopped. ("Cloud Atlas" movie review)
Meanwhile, newcomer "Fun Size" also failed to bring in the fun at the box-office. The Paramount/Nickelodeon flick starring Victoria Justice debuted at No. 10 with $4 million. This film, directed by Josh Schwartz from a 2010 Black List script by Max Werner, was only budgeted for $14 million, so it would be easier for "Fun Size" to recoup its money comapred to "Cloud Atlas.

There are moments during the amiable teen comedy Fun Size when you may wonder if it’s based on an existing property, like a TV show or a comic book or something. (It was partly produced by Nickelodeon, and this has reportedly caused some concern given that it’s a PG-13 film in which a giant mechanical chicken humps a car full of teens.) Directed by Gossip Girl’s Josh Schwartz and written by The Colbert Report’s Max Werner, the film sometimes seems to assume prior knowledge on our part when introducing characters and situations. It has a certain no-nonsense briskness that suggests it knows it’s a teen movie and doesn’t want to waste time with the usual horseshit of telling us who's who and what their relationships are. Imagine that bit of mental jujitsu for a second: a movie that uses its very conventionality as an asset.

A teen comedy alive with the spirit of John Hughes, Fun Size is one of the funniest and most surprisingly satisfying films I.ve seen this year. Imagine if Hughes had directed Superbad and you might get a decent approximation of the appeal and high-spirit of Fun Size. Advertised as a .tween. comedy and starring actors from Nickelodeon and other TV shows, this PG-13 film is good for all ages and like Hughes. films, it.s a great movie not just for those who are teenagers but also for those who remember what it was like to be one.

Exclusive: Paramount Pictures has re-upped Fake Empire partners Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage to a first look feature deal that keeps them at the studio through 2014. The duo has been at the studio since 2010. Deal comes as the shingle’s first Paramount film, the Schwartz-directed Fun Size, hits theaters October 26, 2012. The film is based on the Black List script by Max Werner about a teen (Victoria Justice) who loses her oddball little brother on Halloween and has one desperate night to track him down. Savage and Schwartz produced with Anonymous Content. Paramount hoped Fake Empire would add some youth-centric projects and the producers have responded. The studio last month acquired From What I Remember, the Stacy Kramer/Valerie Thomas young adult novel as well as the novel The Diviners by Bray. Paramount has earmarked the latter as the first in a franchise of films. That adds to such projects as Au Revoir,...

Victoria Justice is finally getting her first movie! And, if you're young enough to know her from Nickelodeon shows like "Zoey 101," "iCarly" or tele-movies like "The Boy Who Cried Werewolf" this is exciting news! Either that, or you're a big fan of Josh Schwartz, who created "The O.C." and "Chuck" and is making his directorial debut with "Fun Size," another coming-of-age, high school comedy.
Justice was cast last year in the coveted role of Wren, who gets stuck babysitting her little brother on Halloween, the same night when the hottest guy in school is throwing a party! But things really go to pot when Wren loses her little brother and starts a night of adventure in order to find him. So, fine, it sounds like a pastiche of several other coming-of-age high school comedies, but, then, "Superbad" didn't sound so original either based on the plot alone. And hey,...

Halloween has always been the realm of the horror movie, but there's always room for a good comedy at the end of October. Films like Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland, Hocus Pocus, Army of Darkness and Fright Night are always good to pop in when the Jack-o'-lanterns come out and you're in need of a good laugh. This year the movie serving that purpose is the new teen comedy Fun Size from director Josh Schwartz and today we have the first trailer for you. The preview comes to us courtesy of Fandango and you can check it out below! Based on a script by Colbert Report writer Max Werner, Fun Size is about a young girl named Wren (Victoria Justice) who wants to do nothing more on Halloween than go to a party where she can be with the boy of her dreams. Unfortunately her plans are sidelined when her...

The trailer for Paramount's trick or Halloween themed treat, Fun Size, is here and though it's pretty damned light on the spooky, we just cannot resist talking about anything that happens during our favorite time of the year!
Look for the flick in theatres on October 26, 2012, to be playing opposite Paranormal Activity 4. Talk about having all your bases covered.
Fun Size stars Thomas Middleditch ("Funny or Die Presents..."), Riki Lindhome (Last House on the Left), Thomas McDonell (Dark Shadows, Prom), Osric Chau (2012), Jackson Nicoll (The Fighter), Johnny Knoxville (Jackass), Ana Gasteyer, Josh Pence, Holmes Osborne, James Pumphrey, Willam Belli, Peter Navy Tuiasosopo, Victoria Justice, Thomas Mann, and Jane Levy and is described as a cross between Superbad and Adventures in Babysitting on Halloween night.
The comedic script, by "Colbert Report" scribe Max Werner, centers on a sarcastic teenage girl (Justice) who is forced to take her little brother trick-or-treating on Halloween,...

Package up one of Tinseltown's squeaky-cleanest teen actresses, a family-friendly holiday conundrum and Johnny Knoxville getting punched in the nether region, and what do you get? A "Fun Size" comedic trick or treat, that's what.
From first-time director Josh Schwartz (former executive producer on "The O.C." and "Gossip Girl") and screenwriter Max Werner ("The Colbert Report"), "Fun Size" features Victoria Justice of Nickelodeon fame as a girl whose Halloween night priority is making it to the popular boy in school's big bash (which she was totally invited to, btw). Buzz-killer mom portrayed by Chelsea Handler decides to stick her in charge of her"gross" little brother, though. After the Spider-Man costume-clad kid gets lost on her watch, she'll have to spend the rest of her night tracking the little bugger down. Woe is the homecoming queen!
Though the picture may be nothing more than a current re-imagining of a slew...

Here's the first trailer to a fun looking new coming of age Halloween comedy called Fun Size. The movie is the first feature film directed by Chuck creator Josh Schwartz, and it stars Victoria Justice (Nickelodeon's Victorious) and Jane Levy (Suburgatory) and Johnny Knoxville even makes a cameo.
The script was written by Colbert Report scribe Max Werner, and the story centers on a sarcastic teenage girl who is forced to take her little brother dressed as Spider-Man trick-or-treating on Halloween. She ends up losing him and ends up going on an adventure to try and find him. Meanwhile he's on his own little adventure.
The movie hits theaters on October 26th, and it looks like it might be kind of fun. I think the little brother is going to end up being the best part of the movie. Here's the trailer...
