On the surface, You’re Cordially Invited has a premise precision-tooled for pure romcom hijinks: two weddings, one venue, multiple sabotage attempts on behalf of each family. And while filmmaker Nicholas Stoller peppers his latest with all kinds of explosive incidents – cake-smashing, dock-destroying, ’gator-wrassling acts of carnage – they somehow prove less interesting than what’s going on under the hood of his protagonists.

That shouldn’t be a surprise, since Stoller’s Forgetting Sarah Marshall always sat on the more heartfelt end of the Apatow bro-comedy spectrum, while his Bad Neighbours grounded its houses-at-war premise in the very real panic of new parenthood. You’re Cordially Invited offers a similarly emotional basis to underpin its set-pieces. Will Ferrell’s Jim is stunned when his college-graduate daughter (Blockers’ Geraldine Viswanathan) comes home with a shiny rock on her finger; he raised her solo after his wife’s death, and throws himself into wedding-planner mode to mask his turmoil.

There is really nothing that is not completely predictable about Amazon Prime Video’s latest big budget romantic comedy, but with Reese Witherspoon back in the genre, and Will Ferrell doing what he does best, the chemistry is there, and so are some laughs, including a real Lol moment involving Ferrell and an uncooperative alligator that is a good reason comedies should probably best be seen with a crowd. Unfortunately, despite its stars and fan-friendly genre, this one is straight to streaming. At least in a Valentine’s Day period, You’re Cordially Invited qualifies more appropriately as a far more pleasant date movie than the horror and action Valentine’s movie the studios have planned this year. It isn’t going to make you forget My Best Friend’s Wedding, Bridesmaids and Father Of The Bride anytime soon, but it’ll do, even as the ‘R’ rating here seems a little harsh.

There is a wildcard at every wedding, but in the case of “You’re Cordially Invited,” there are two. And they are played by Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon.

Now streaming on Prime, the film directed by Nicholas Stoller centers on two families who unknowingly double book their weddings at the same small inn — an inn that can really only accommodate one wedding. For Jim (Ferrell), it is his daughter’s, and for Margot (Witherspoon), it is her sister’s. Naturally, the two immediately go insane, trying to force the other to back down.

Somehow, Ferrell and Witherspoon have never led a comedy together, but they are doing it now with a very familiar cast.

In response, CBS has put production of After Midnight on hiatus. The late-night TV show films at the Paramount Pictures lot in Los Angeles. The Palisades fire is to the west and the Eaton fire isn't too far to the north.

The show, hosted by Taylor Tomlinson, returned from its holiday break earlier this week. Rerun episodes are now scheduled for January 8 and January 9. Wednesday night's episode will replay the December 12 show featuring Fortune Feimster, Paul Scheer, and Ilana Glazer.

Anthony Jeselnik is coming back to Netflix this fall with his latest stand-up special, “Bones and All.” The special will premiere globally on Nov. 26.

This marks the third Netflix stand-up special from the comedian. Previously, Jeselnik released “Fire in the Maternity Ward” for the streamer in 2019, as well as “Thoughts and Prayers” in 2015. His previous comedy albums were 2013’s “Caligula” and 2010’s “Shakespeare,” both of which were released by Comedy Central Records.

Jeselnik is currently on his “Bones and All” tour, which celebrates “20 years of delivering witty, boundary-pushing comedy,” according to a Wednesday press release for the upcoming special.

“Bones and All” comes from Above Average Productions. Jeselnik serves as both the special’s performer and executive producer alongside Christie Smith, Ally Engelberg and Marc Lieberman. Bill Benz will serve as its director.

Max has canceled its animated series Velma after two seasons. The show’s second season debuted in April, and a Halloween special that premiered on Oct. 3 marks the final outing for the show.
