The Southampton Playhouse, a historic cinema that is being revitalized into a state-of-the-art movie theater, announced its leadership team on Tuesday.

Maria A. Ruiz Botsacos, a top executive at Film at Lincoln Center, will come on board as the Southampton Playhouse’s inaugural executive director, while Eric Kohn, best known for his work as a critic and editor at IndieWire, will serve as its newly appointed artistic director. The Southampton Playhouse, which will have four redesigned theaters including an Imax venue, is slated to open in 2025.

Exclusive: The Jonathan Larson Project, a new musical featuring more than 20 songs that have never been part of a fully staged production – including material cut from Rent and tick, tick… Boom! – will make its Off Broadway world premiere in February, producers announced today.

The Jonathan Larson Project will begin a 16-week limited engagement with previews starting Friday, February 14, at the Orpheum Theatre in Manhattan’s East Village neighborhood. The official opening night is Monday, March 10.

Casting will be announced at a later date.

The “new” music was found in files and boxes after the visionary Rent writer died suddenly at the age of 35 in 1996. The trove of songs includes work from unproduced shows including 1984 and Superbia, songs that were cut from Rent and tick, tick… Boom!, songs written for theatrical revues and for the radio, and even songs never publicly performed or recorded before The Jonathan Larson Project.

Nicole Scherzinger, Succession star Sarah Snook, Game of Thrones and Sherlock actor Mark Gatiss, a revival of the musical Sunset Boulevard and the play Stranger Things: The First Shadow were among the winners at the 2024 Olivier Awards, which celebrate achievements in London theater. The Sex and the City stars is up for Best Actress for her performance in Plaza Suite – her first Olivier – while Succession’s Snook has picked up a nod for her critically-acclaimed performance as 26 characters in The Picture of Dorian Gray.

In the Best Actor category, Scott’s performance in Vanya will come up against Tennant’s role in Macbeth, while the starry nominee list also includes Joseph Fiennes for Dear England, which is being made into a BBC series, Mark Gatiss for The Motive And The Cue and James Norton in A Little Life.

For the second consecutive year, Broadway cast albums made a clean sweep of the Grammy nominations for Best Musical Theater Album, shutting out both the West End and Off Broadway.

Competing for the 2023 Grammy will be Kimberly Akimbo, Parade, Shucked, Some Like It Hot and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Three of the five nominees are new shows, while two – Parade and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street – are revivals.

With today’s announcement, the Grammys reprise last summer’s Tony Awards, when all five of the productions made strong showing in both nominations and wins. At the Tonys, Kimberly Akimbo won top honors for Best Musical and Best Original Score, while Parade was named Best Musical Revival – three wins that might be most relevant as a Grammy predictor.

Still, the Tonys also awarded performances from Some Like It Hot and Shucked – Kimberly Akimbo‘s Victoria Clark and Bonnie Milligan took the Actress nominations in those categories – while Parade‘s Michael Arden was honored for his direction. David Lindsay-Abaire won Best Book for Kimberly Akimbo.

Like last year, all five of the nominees are Broadway cast albums, bucking a previous nomination trend that saw strong showings from both London, Off Broadway and even a concept album from a TikTok musical (the 2022 winner The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical).

Even in years when the nominations are more representative of theater both Broadway and non-Broadway, the Grammy winner almost always is a Broadway cast album, Bridgerton being the notable exception. The 2023 winner was the revival of Into The Woods, which began life Off Broadway as an Encores! presentation but took the Grammy for the recording of its subsequent Broadway staging.

Also worth noting: Of the five 2024 nominees, one has already closed (the limited engagement of Parade starring Ben Platt and Micaela Diamond), two will definitely be closed by the time the winners are announced on Feb. 4; and one – Sweeney Todd – will have lost its original leads (the final performances of Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford are January 14; Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster step in beginning February 9 for 12 weeks only).

The 76th Tony Awards took place on Sunday, June 11 in a two-part telecast staged at the United Palace in Washington Heights. Nominations were announced on May 2, 2023. Of the 38 eligible productions from the 2022-2023 Broadway season, 29 reaped bids across 26 competitive categories.

13 of the 15 eligible musicals and musical revivals earned at least one nomination. A new stage adaptation of the 1959 film “Some Like It Hot” leads all productions with 13 nominations. The Outer Critics Circle has named Some Like It Hot as the year’s Best New Broadway Musical and Leopoldstadt as Best New Broadway Play, the organization announced today.

The Circle, made up of writers on New York theater for out-of-town newspapers and national publications, also named Parade in the musical revival category, and Topdog/Underdog as the outstanding play revival.

In all, Some Like It Hot topped the list in number of wins – five, in all – with Leopoldstadt coming in second with three awards.

Winners of the 72nd Annual Outer Critics Circle Awards will be honored at a ceremony on Thursday, May 25 at the Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center’s New York Public Library for The Performing Arts.

Exclusive: The rollicking Broadway musical Guys & Dolls is to be revived at London’s The Bridge Theatre next year with 420 members of the audience able to “party” with the cast, as the show’s director Nicholas Hytner (The History Boys) told Deadline.

The immersive production is set to begin preview performances from February 27. Official opening night is March 9.

Hytner, a former artistic director of Britain’s National Theatre, said that he and his associates chose Guys & Dolls “because a hell of a lot of it happens in public space like Times Square, Broadway and Havana.”

Guys & Dolls, described as a Broadway fable, is based on tales penned by Damon Runyon, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows.

The show, which was originally scheduled to open in Chicago last year before transferring to the Great White Way, will begin performances on Nov. 1. “Some Like It Hot” officially opens Dec. 11 at Broadway’s Shubert Theatre.

The Broadway premiere of Michael R. Jackson’s Pulitzer-Prize winning musical A Strange Loop will begin previews at Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre on Wednesday, April 6, with an opening night set for Tuesday, April 26, producers announced today.

The cast, also announced, will feature Jaquel Spivey, a recent graduate of Pittsburgh’s Point Park University, in his Broadway debut in the central role of Usher. He’ll join original Off Broadway cast members Antwayn Hopper, L Morgan Lee, John-Michael Lyles, James Jackson, Jr., John-Andrew Morrison , and Jason Veasey.

Directed by Stephen Brackett and choreographed by Raja Feather Kelly, A Strange Loop centers on Usher, described as “a Black, queer writer writing a musical about a Black, queer writer writing a musical about a Black, queer writer…Hell-bent on breaking free of his own self-perception, Usher wrestles with the thoughts in his head, brought to life on stage by a hilarious, straight-shooting ensemble.

Michael R. Jackson’s Pulitzer-Prize winning musical A Strange Loop will open at Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre in spring 2022, producers announced.

Broadway has just reopened after shuttering on March 13, 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. To mark the return of the rialto, the 74th annual Tonys were handed out on Sunday, September 26 at the Winter Garden theater. This two-part ceremony, which will be hosted by six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald on Paramount+ and “Hamilton” star Leslie Odom, Jr. on CBS, comes almost one year after nominations were announced on October 15, 2020.

Exclusive: New musical Broadway Bounty Hunter from Be More Chill composer Joe Iconis will get its New York premiere Off Broadway this summer with Orange is the New Black actress Annie Golden reprising her critically acclaimed lead performance.

The album will be based on a concert originally presented at Feinstein's54 Below, directed and conceived by Jennifer Ashley Tepper, and featuring music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Charlie Rosen. The show features the music of the late composer Jonathan Larson, who wrote Rent and tick tick Boom, the former an iconic Broadway landmark and the latter a beloved musical gem. The Jonathan Larson Project is an evening of Jonathan's unheard work featuring songs from never-produced shows like 1984 and Superbia songs that were cut from Rent and tick tick Boom songs written for theatrical revues and songs written for the radio songs about politics and love and New York City songs never before publicly performed or recorded. The album will be produced by Jennifer Ashley Tepper, Charlie Rosen and Kurt Deutsch.
