At its heart, Sundance is about discovery. Some of our brightest, biggest filmmaking stars — we’re talking Steven Soderbergh, Richard Linklater, Ava DuVernay, Paul Thomas Anderson, Lulu Wang, Ryan Coogler, Aubrey Plaza, Catherine Hardwicke, Todd Haynes, Tessa Thompson, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Eggers, the Duplass brothers, Michael B. Jordan, Amy Adams, Elizabeth Olsen, Brie Larson, Lakeith Stanfield, Miles Teller, Anya Taylor-Joy, and many, many more — first rose to acclaim by bringing their work to Sundance.
In 2025, a year that was long-heralded as one all about new discoveries, that tradition only continued. While this year’s lineup included a number of returning names, like Ira Sachs, Amy Berg, Andrew Ahn, Justin Lin, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, Cooper Raiff, Kahlil Joseph, Heidi Ewing & Rachel Grady, David France, Jesse Short Bull, Ryan White, Sophie Hyde, Jesse Moss & Amanda McBaine, Meera Menon, and Clint Bentley, there were also a hefty number of newbies joining those filmmaking ranks.

Twilight star Robert Pattinson has a response for anyone who still wants to tell him that the franchise “ruined the vampire genre.”
In an interview with GQ Spain, the soon-to-be Mickey-17 star shared how he deals with this opinion almost two decades after the first film arrived.
“I love that people keep telling me, ‘Man, ‘Twilight’ ruined the vampire genre,’” Pattinson said in the interview, translated by Variety. “Are you still stuck on that shit? How can you be sad about something that happened almost 20 years ago? It’s crazy.”
Pattinson’s career took off after he portrayed Edward Cullen in the five films based on Stephanie Meyer’s books, starring alongside Kristen Stewart’s love interest and main character Bella Swan. The first film of the franchise arrived in 2008.

With critical and box office hits like 2022’s “Nope” and the new theatrical release “One of Them Days,” Keke Palmer is stepping into her star-era, and according to her, it’s been a long time coming.
In a recent interview with The Cut, Palmer reflected on her time as a child actress in films like “Akeelah and the Bee” and the Nickelodeon show “True Jackson, VP.” While many of her peers received a great deal of attention of similar work, Palmer always felt a bit ignored.
“I wasn’t necessarily in the same conversations as Victoria Justice or Selena Gomez or Miley Cyrus at that time,” she said. “It was very much ‘That’s the Black show’ or ‘That’s Keke Palmer, the Black girl on the network.’”
At the time, Palmer was only 15, so this was not only hard to understand, but to cope with emotionally.

Keegan-Michael Key is shaping up for a busy 2025 as he has two dream projects currently in development.
The Emmy winner said he “has a good feeling” about what this year has in store while teasing an upcoming sports project and another in the action genre. “We’ll see how it goes,” he added.
“I don’t know how to answer without saying things I can’t say. If only I could tell you,” Key told People.
“I have two projects in development that I’m very excited about,” he noted. “Both are checks on my bucket list. One goes in the sports world direction and one goes in the action direction, which is very different than a lot of the work that I have done in the past.”
In March, Deadline announced Key was cast in the Amazon MGM Studios crime thriller Play Dirty, based on Donald E. Westlake’s Parker novels.

When it comes to terrifying horror movies, many horror fanatics love the blend of suspense, gore, and jump scares. Some of the most successful horror movies and franchises center around thrills and bloodshed. Audiences love the shock factor and excitement that comes from gore. But looking past the blood, some of the creepiest horror movies center around a horrifying journey and psychological torment.
A good horror story shines on its own and allows audiences to immerse themselves in the creative storytelling without needing the extra, over-the-top violence. Overlooked suspenseful horror movie The Others centers around a haunting atmosphere and creates an overwhelming sense of dread without needing a single drop of blood added to the story. Well-written creepy narratives and empathetic characters make the perfect blend for a compelling horror plot.

When it comes to superhero portrayals, fans often end up associating the actor and the character with one another. So much so that it is hard to see one without the other, and Chadwick Boseman is one such actor. Having achieved global stardom with his portrayal of Black Panther in the MCU, the actor tragically lost his life to colon cancer in 2020.

There have been plenty of great sci-fi comedies in the last decade, from underrated gems to award winners and summer blockbusters. Sci-fi comedies are often best when they balance their two genres well. Movies like Back to the Future and Men in Black, for example, have thrilling stories and intriguing sci-fi concepts, as well as great jokes and strong comedic performances.
In the last 10 years, sci-fi comedies have been used to lovingly poke fun at the genre, but sci-fi has also been used as a guise to facilitate plenty of social commentary and satire. Movies like Sorry to Bother You, Palm Springs and The Lobster all use sci-fi concepts to show how unusual everyday life has become for people in the here and now. Other sci-fi comedies have used humor to lighten up some cerebral stories that could otherwise be too dystopian and depressing.

Following part one of our 2025 movie preview, we’re counting down our 50 most-anticipated films of the year.
50. 28 Years Later (Danny Boyle; June 20)
It’s a shame the 28 Later (?) franchise lost its shaky, grainy video-camera aesthetic that defined the mood and feel of the first entry, 28 Days Later. But it’s a godsend that they’ve brought back Alex Garland and Danny Boyle, the original writer-director combo who grabbed our attention with the otherwise beleaguered premise that is a zombie apocalypse. With the promise of their collaboration––which has also led to The Beach and Sunshine––and a feral Ralph Fiennes, there should be a lot to look forward to in discovering how things have developed in this fictional world over the nearly three decades since its outbreak. – Luke H.
49. Heads or Tails? (Alessio Rigo de Righi and Matteo Zoppis)

Audiences come to movies to be entertained, yet studios have also used this as an opportunity to bombard viewers with inordinate amounts of product placement. There’s been a long history of product placement in cinema, and the contributions of brand fees to movies can actually help bolster projects and ensure a movie's profitability. However, there’s always a limit, and when taken to its absolute extreme, films start to feel less like enjoyable presentations of actors, writers, and directors' artistic vision and more like one giant advertisement that viewers have accidentally paid to see.
Many of the biggest franchises of all time have utilized product placement in their movies, and many films, especially those aimed at younger viewers, have continually used subtle product placement to influence their audience. On some occasions, this cunning form of advertising was anything but subtle, with some truly bizarre product placement decisions being made.

The thrilling true story Judas & The Black Messiah recounts the activism and violent suppression of the Black Panther Party's Illinois chapter in the late 1960s, leading to the death of leader Fred Hampton. Judas & The Black Messiah tells the real-life story of Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya), chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, and William O'Neal (Lakeith Stanfield), an FBI informant working for the Bureau to avoid jail time who infiltrated Hampton's inner circle.
Judas & The Black Messiah brings into focus a chapter of civil rights history. Along with Kaluuya and Stanfield, the cast of Judas and the Black Messiah brings several of the real-life figures surrounding the true story, from Hampton's allies to his powerful enemies. As with any movie based on a true story, there are elements that are created as Hollywood fiction while also a lot of details that stay true to the real events.

The Judas and the Black Messiah cast brings the story of a man who infiltrated the Black Panthers to life with several recognizable stars. Directed by Shaka King, Judas and the Black Messiah primarily centers on the events that preceded the 1969 assassination of Fred Hampton, a 21-year-old Black Panther leader who served as Chairman for the Illinois chapter, beginning with criminal William O'Neal infiltrating the group as an FBI informant. It is a true-crime story with an incredible ensemble, most of whom play real-life characters.

Hundreds of movies are released every year, although only a select few have such an impact that they maintain their relevance 50 years later. The 2010s were a great time for filmmakers and featured plenty of standout releases from iconic directors, acclaimed actors, and brilliant screenwriters. Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Black Friday and while the rest of the world recovers from Thanksgiving dinner by scouring online shopping deals, we’re dutifully typing about the Best Supporting Actor race. It’s not even Dec. 1, but I’m ready to call this one the 2024 version of last year’s Best Supporting Actress race. As you remember, that field was dominated by Da’Vine Joy Randolph once critics groups and industry bodies started giving out statuettes, and not even the presence of two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster turning in one of her best and most enjoyable performances in years could stop the Randolph train from hitting the Oscar stage.

The project is described as a drama with comedic undertones. It was picked up to pilot at CBS back in August, with Gubler’s casting as Lew Einstein announced in early October. It is an adaptation of the German series of the same name
The official logline states, “Brilliant but directionless, the great grandson of Albert Einstein (Gubler) spends his days as a comfortably tenured professor until his bad boy antics land him in trouble with the law and he is pressed into service helping a local police detective (Salazar) solve her most puzzling cases.”

Neon said today it’s closed a $200 million-plus credit facility led by Comerica Bank.
The funding, which follows the leading indie distributor and producer’s previous facility with Comerica from October of 2022, will be used to bolster core operations, including film acquisition, development, production, and distribution, while also expanding into new markets. The investment will further support strategic initiatives and strengthen its international footprint, driving additional growth.
Earlier this year it debuted a new international sales strand, with Cannes its first official stop, launching international for Keeper, the next genre film by Longlegs helmer Osgood Perkins.
The deal, which was negotiated and managed by Neon’s CFO Ryan Friscia, comes after the company recently released Anora, the highly-anticipated new film from Sean Baker starring Mikey Madison, which won the Palme d’Or in Cannes and opened Stateside October 18 to the highest per-screen average of 2024; Nicolas Cage-starring horror Longlegs which...

Neon has closed a $200m-plus credit facility led by Comerica Bank which it will use to bolster core functions including film acquisitions, development, production, and distribution.
The arrangement will additionally be used to support expansion into new markets and strengthen the company’s international footprint.

Oscar-winning indie studio Neon has secured a new $200 million credit facility, flushing the company with cash for operations and growth.
The infusion, which could keep “Anora” star Mikey Madison in lucite platform heels until the end of time, is led by Neon’s existing credit provider Comerica Bank. The raise will contribute to film acquisition, development, production, distribution and market expansion, Neon said Monday.
“Comerica believes in the vision of Neon and couldn’t be more thrilled to support their continued growth. Their ability to identify and curate film, while finding innovative ways to connect audiences with cinema, is unmatched,” said Comerica Entertainment Group SVP Derek Riedel, adding that the “independent film landscape is a core pillar of our business and we are excited about the future.”
Riedel oversaw the transaction for the bank, with Neon chief financial officer Ryan Friscia negotiating on the studio side.

Neon has closed a $200 million plus credit facility led by Comerica Bank. The funding follows the studio’s previous revolving credit facility with Comerica Bank in October 2022.
The new credit will, according to Monday’s official release, “Be allocated to bolster its core operations, including film acquisition, development, production and distribution, while also expanding into new markets. The investment will further support strategic initiatives and strengthen its international footprint, driving additional growth.”
The deal was negotiated and managed by the studio’s chief financial officer Ryan Friscia at the end of a year that has included “Anora,” directed by Sean Baker and starring Mikey Madison, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in May; and Osgood Perkins’ “Longlegs,” which became the highest-grossing independent feature of the year with more than $75 million domestically. Their 2024 slate also included Sydney Sweeney in “Immaculate” and Hunter Schafer in “Cuckoo.”

This year alone, Neon released one of the biggest box office hits in its history with “Longlegs” and had a fifth-straight winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes with “Anora.” With more exciting projects in the works — like “They Follow,” the sequel to one of their earliest hits “It Follows” — even bigger and better things may be on the horizon. All of that costs money.
On Monday, Neon announced it has closed a $200 million-plus credit facility as led by Comerica Bank (it previously had another from Comerica in 2022). Tom Quinn’s distributor will use that investment to bolster its film acquisition (Palme d’Or winners don’t come cheap!) and development, production, and distribution. That is likely to include new markets.
Another upcoming film to look out for from Neon includes “I Love Boosters” from Boots Riley and starring Keke Palmer, Naomi Ackie, Lakeith Stanfield, Demi Moore, Eiza González,...

Lakeith Stanfield and Mark Wahlberg are hard at work on their new movie!
The two Oscar-nominated actors walked around the confetti-lined streets of Times Square while filming scenes for their new crime thriller Play Dirty on Wednesday night (November 20) in New York City.
Earlier in the week, Mark, 53, was spotted filming a few scenes at a park in Brooklyn.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Play Dirty is an adaption of Donald E. Westlake’s Parker novels and follows Mark “as the hardened professional thief who is, naturally, double-crossed and left for dead. His hunt for revenge, however, brings with it a shot at the biggest heist of his career. But, per the studio, even with the help of his partner, an actor-slash-con artist named Grofield, he’ll still need to outsmart a South American dictator, the New York mob and the world’s richest man if he hopes to stay alive.

Will “Wicked” be more popular with the Oscars’ acting branch than we think? Could the brouhaha over Sebastian Stan and “Actors on Actors” help him? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to answer your burning questions of the week.
It’s “Wicked” mania this week as the long-awaited film hits theaters and continues to rise in various categories in the Oscar odds. Robert Pattinson has come quite far since his role in the Twilight movies, which, to be fair, was one of his worst acting jobs. Throughout the four films, Pattinson’s performance progressively worsened. However, he did not have much to go on with the vampire character. Pattinson proved to be a performer in films like The Childhood of a Leader, Good Time, and The Lighthouse.

Pattinson was not a fan-favorite when he was cast in the role of Batman. However, he surprised fans with his darker take on the character, something Matt Reeves also got credit for. The film has now set a major benchmark that James Gunn will have to surpass with his Dcu film, The Brave and the Bold. However, Pattinson’s upcoming projects seem to have more promise than his role as the Dark Knight.

Jennifer Lawrence returns to her darker roots for “Die, My Love,” Lynne Ramsay’s first film in seven years. Check out a first-look image above.

Eagle-eyed viewers will quickly notice how innovative technology gets presented in a movie, as these depictions often have fascinating behind-the-scenes circumstances to explain them. While in todays modern technology world, characters using phones, computers, and different types of technology is a given, there are usually massive corporations behind the scenes making important decisions about how their tech is being used. This can lead to a positive viewer perception of the highlighted tech and provide a level of product placement that subconsciously influences consumers' habits.
While technology has been central to some of the best sci-fi movies of all time, its also just as prevalent in murder mysteries, biopics, and laugh-out-loud comedies. Although audiences arent always privy to these behind-the-scenes deals, information has slowly leaked out about the true nature of strict rules that tech companies force filmmakers to follow. Demi Moore, whose performance in Coralie Fargeat’s “The Substance” as been praised as Oscar-worthy, will receive a career tribute at the French Cinematheque in Paris on Nov. 5, ahead of the movie’s local release.
The day-long retrospective and tribute are being co-hosted by Mubi, the global arthouse distributor and streamer which has successfully released the bold and bloody movie in the U.S., the U.K., Latin America, German and most other international territories, as well as Metropolitan which handles the French theatrical release, and the French Cinematheque.
The feminist body-horror movie stars Moore as Elisabeth Sparkle, a recently fired daytime-tv who uses a black market drug that creates a younger version of herself, with dangerous side effects.
Underscoring Mubi’s big theatrical push, the movie already ranks as an indie hit, having grossed $53.6 million worldwide since its Sept. 20 release, including $14.5 million in North America. It’s Mubi’s biggest B.
