A version of this story about “Top Gun: Maverick” first appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
When we asked singer, songwriter, producer, three-time Grammy winner and OneRepublic vocalist Ryan Tedder about writing the smash hit “I Ain’t Worried” (co-written with Brent Kutzle and Tyler Spry) for the shirtless beach football scene in “Top Gun: Maverick,” he talked for 25 minutes without needing a single follow-up question. So we’ll let him tell the story:
“I knew ‘Top Gun: Maverick was being made. I didn’t know any other details. I got a call at the peak of Covid, and I was asked if I would jump on a Zoom with Tom Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer and Chris McHugh, the writer. It lasted probably 30, 45 minutes, and Tom went into depth about why this scene is so critical and what it means to the movie. It’s...

Even amid rising interest rates, Hollywood’s real estate up-and-comers agree that business is good. Five emerging agents on the scene — Kati Cattaneo, Jacob Greene, Marco Salari, Kevin Stewart and Caroline Wolf — notice that although inventory may be lacking, demand for well-made homes in Los Angeles is unwavering.
“Los Angeles will always be one of the best and most desirable places to live in the world,” says Coldwell Banker’s Salari, 26. “Even with the interest rates and threat of recession, this market is strong with many buyers needing homes.”
This year, Salari closed on a deal for a Santa Monica property that got 22 offers, all over asking. His clients were the prevailing buyers, which Salari calls a “hard-fought win.” Salari, a former Italian basketball player, also struck deals with Favorite Daughter co-founder Erin Foster and actress-screenwriter couple Katey Sagal and Kurt Sutter. Gwen Stefani has released a new holiday song, “Here This Christmas,” which will serve as the theme song for this year’s Hallmark Channel “Countdown to Christmas” programming.
The cheery track moves with a skipping drum groove while it bursts with all manner of bells, horns, and strings. Stefani crafts a familiar seasonal scene with snow falling, lights, mistletoe, and more, although, as she sings on the chorus, none of that matters because of the one thing missing: “Don’t need presents under the tree/Don’t need snow and...

Music videos come and go but few leave a lasting impression. When One Republic set out to release a special edition video for "Feel Again," their first single off their new album, Native, they knew it had to be special. The band's lead singer Ryan Tedder wrote the song, drawing on recordings of heartbeats of children in remote villages of Malawi and Guatemala for inspiration, and the video features never-before-seen footage of his visit there. Tedder went to see some of Save The Children's programs, focusing on improving the health and nutrition of children and their families. "As soon as...

This week in music, Dido made her return with "Girl Who Got Away." The album was an attempt at a fresh sound, but critics felt the project's "cool factor" seemed a little forced. Her duet "Let Us Move On" with hip-hop fave Kendrick Lamar was taken as a glaring example of this fact. The Strokes' "Comedown Machine" presented a band that seems to have lost its chemistry and Lil' Wayne's "I Am Not Human II" received negative marks for being a little stagnant. The rapper didn't bring as much energy as with his last album. Rounding out this week's new music was One Republic's "Native, which lost points for its lead singer's bland delivery.
In movies, "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" was an overwhelming mix of explosions and shootouts that lacked a solid storyline, leaving most critics extremely confused. "Welcome to the Punch" wasted a strong cast on an unrealistic...

After singing the songs of Motown last night, the American Idol Top 8 will learn their fate. One of them will go home on the 450th episode of this epic singing competition.
Former Idol contestants Katherine McPhee and Colton Dixon perform, as will Idol's newest judge Keith Urban. Ready to roll, TV Fanatics?
The opening group number pays tribute to Bob Seger. If I were Bob Seger, I'd want my tribute back. The tempo is all jacked up and this is not the song for funky vocal runs. That was a disaster like just about every other large group number ever on this show.
Moving on to Jimmy's thoughts.
Jimmy said Candice Glover gave the other contestants a lesson in how to perform. She's a natural. Jimmy agreed with Nicki's critique of Janelle and Kree's duet and said Janelle has to work on her ability to harmonize. Lazaro Arbos did...

On the "American Idol" Top 8 performance night, Angie Miller faltered a bit, while Lazaro put forth his best performance in weeks. Will Angie be in trouble?
We doubt it -- Devin is probably headed home. But you never know. However, before we can get to any results, we have to be treated to roller rink anthem "Old Time Rock 'n Roll," complete with Janelle being dressed a truck stop waitress and some kid's-birthday-party-magician puffs of smoke in the background.
Oh, "Idol." Never change.
Then instead of a Ford Music Video, it looks like the Idols are being sent to sing with some kids. Well, that's cool. It's totally cheesy and stuff, but these kids are adorable and we bet that was a lot of fun.
Aretha Franklin has a message for Kree -- "You put that one away and you're not going anywhere." Aww, that's nice.
Colton Dixon's here.

American Idol 2013 Eliminated Devin Velez tonight in March 28th show. Tonight's elimination show ,kicked off with another one of those awful group songs from the final contestants. I swear, I wanted to press mute. Next, they showed the usual recap footage segment of last night's performances with some great critiques from the brutally honest Jimmy Iovine. Next, they revealed that Kree got a special audio message from the Queen Of Soul ,Aretha Franklin, for doing such a great job with her song "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)." Then former Idol contestant ,Colton Dixon, hit the stage to sing one of his new songs called ,"Love Has Come For Me”. Next, One Republic and another former Idol contestant ,Katharine McPhee, hit the stage to sing "If I Lose Myself." After a break, current Idol judge Keith Urban, hit the stage to sing his song, "Long Hot Summer." Then finally, host Ryan Seacrest,...

Practically every second of American Idol provides juicy fodder for conspiracy theorists, paranoid superfans and hardcore cynics on their second glasses of sauvignon blanc.
Take, for example, the Season 12 Top 8 results telecast: As the five remaining ladies and three surviving guys teamed up for a performance of Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll,” I wondered to myself, who’s going to be stuck with the line, “say I’m old-fashioned, say I’m over the hill”? Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe has heard our pleas for spankin’ new theme weeks on American Idol, but when the Top 10 take the stage Wednesday night (8/7 c, on Fox) the results could be beautiful or they could be disastrous.
You see, “Music of the American Idols” is a two-pronged beast, encompassing the songs previous Idol winners covered during their respective seasons, and also the songs that these champs have released in their post-show careers.
The key for the Season 12 Top 10 will be choosing songs that fit their voices — but not trying to recreate iconic Idol moments that they’ll never be able to match.

Sexy isn't a word we usually use to describe Taylor Swift. But the singer made us change our mind when she hit the stage at Kiis FM's 2012 Jingle Ball is a pair of high-waisted shorts. And while they're not verging on hot pants territory, they're definitely more risque than what we've previously seen on the 22-year-old. Taylor paired them with a sparkly top and festive red flats, though we would've preferred to see a cute kitten heel instead. Her ex Joe Jonas also performed with his brothers (Nick Jonas is looking pretty buff these days!), along with Ne-Yo, Ellie Goulding and One Republic's Ryan Tedder.Check out all the photos above and then vote in our poll below. Rihanna was already scheduled to chat with Andy Cohen on Facebook Live on Thursday, but first she had some important business to get out of the way: the music video for "Diamonds."
The song is the lead single off her upcoming album, "Unapologetic." "Diamonds" was produced by Benny Blanco and Stargate and written by Sia. It marked a strong departure from her recent work, which veered more toward electronic dance music. In an interview with The Huffington Post, Blanco explained how the single came together:

And we came up with some stuff, but it just sounded so much like Rihanna. Most of the time when people work with an artist, they don't give them what they need for the future, they give...

And we came up with some stuff, but it just sounded so much like Rihanna. Most of the time when people work with an artist, they don't give them what they need for the future, they give...

Cody Simpson has it pretty sweet, right? The 15-year-old pop star from Australia's Gold Coast was an award-winning swimmer before his music career took off online. Not only did the then-preteen's bedroom Timberlake covers blow-up Justin Bieber-style, but last year he even snagged Biebz boy-genius manager Scooter Braun.
But as much as Cody's life may seem as golden as the coast he grew up on, the truth is that being famous doesn't mean you don't have feelings -- or that those feelings aren't as easily hurt as anyone else's.
"Cyberbullying is something that I experience online everyday, you know? Being a public figure a lot of people will really love what you do, but you know there is also a ton of people who will hate on it," Simpson told HuffPost Canada at Free the Children's We Day youth rally in Vancouver last month, a city still reeling from...

"Hitmaker" -- a term that's often thrown around loosely -- seems like the right label for Benny Blanco. The multi-platinum songwriter and producer's resume boasts a staggering 13 No. 1 singles, a tally even more impressive given that the man behind "California Gurls," "Teenage Dream," "Dynamite," "Tik Tok" and "Moves Like Jagger" is 24 years young.
And Blanco's star is about to get bigger: As a co-producer on Rihanna's lead single "Diamonds" (off the soon-to-be-released album, "Unapologetic") and Ke$ha's "Die Young," he currently has two songs in the top ten on Billboard's singles chart.
By working with the likes of Dr. Luke and Stargate (the latter of whom he collaborated with for "Diamonds"), Blanco has aligned himself with the top producers of the current generation of pop music. In spite -- or, perhaps, because -- of its incorporation of genres as diverse as hip-hop, country, dance and world music, pop music...

A number of crimes involving the male torso went down on Thursday night’s installment of The X Factor. Simon Cowell rocked a neckline that plunged dangerously close to his netherregions. A member of boy band Emblem3 wore suspenders — without a shirt! (I’ll pause for a moment while you fight back the acrid taste of bile). And oh the sounds that got caught and killed in the chests of fresh-faced Willie Jones and wheelchair-bound Freddie Combs! (We’ll just assume the former’s were low and rumbly, in a bebeh-lock-them-dawwrs kinda way, and the latter’s were tremulous and overbaked.

Never before had a comedian or an animal act made it into the finals of "America's Got Talent." So it was exciting that Tom Cotter and Olate Dogs rose to the top in the end. They outlasted The Untouchables, who broke Sharon Osbourne's heart when they started crying upon their elimination. She tried to console them by telling them it was her last show.
Also eliminated early were dance painters David Garibaldi and His Cmyk's, sand artist Joe Castillo and William Close, who wowed each week with his Earth harp and other homemade instruments.
The two-hour finale was padded with plenty of musical guests to drag out the big reveal of the act that would take home the $1 million prize and headline that Las Vegas show. And as a preview of what a Las Vegas act looks like, Blue Man Group also took to the stage.

“Life is made up of meetings and partings,” Charles Dickens once wrote.
Okay, that may actually just be a line from Kermit the Frog in The Muppet Christmas Carol, but in the case of America’s Got Talent, NBC’s annual summer competition that manages to be the spiritual heir to The Gong Show, a poignant homage to vaudeville, and a grotesque Felliniesque carnival — sometimes all at the same time — it’s especially true. Season 7, which wrapped tonight, saw both the departure of longtime judge Sharon Osbourne and the crowning of a new talent shortly to be unleashed upon the unsuspecting tourists of Las Vegas.

Music video director Anthony Mandler will be making his feature film debut, one way or another. The helmer, who has worked with folks like Rihanna, Drake, Usher, Jay-z, The Killers, John Legend, T.I., One Republic and Muse has already lined up two movie gigs: "Die In A Gunfight" with Zac Efron attached, and the comic book adaptation "Last Days Of American Crime." However, a third movie may be beating them both to the big screen. Mandler has signed on to direct "Dead Of Winter," a Black List script by Sarah Conradt that has "True Grit" breakout Hailee Steinfeld set to star. Not too bad. But unfortunately, it sounds like a pretty rote little thriller. Steinfeld will play a teen who heads to a remote cabin with her father, who hopes his daughter will more closely bond with her new stepmother. But a fugitive posing as a park ranger shows up,...

They say the best place to start is at the beginning. For Keenan Cahill, it was August 28, 2010. That was the day he launched his first famous YouTube video, lip-syncing to Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream." The video went viral and was viewed by millions almost instantly. It was even seen by Perry herself. What came next was a flurry of attention and more videos. A lot more. There's over 170 in all and they include appearances with guest artists like the Glee Live cast, Lmfao, 50 Cent, Maroon 5, Flo-Rida, Drake Bell, Sean Kingston, Big Time Rush, Hot Chelle Rae, Ariana Grande, Jason Derulo, Julianne Hough, and more. He even joined Katy Perry backstage during her California Dreams tour where the duo performed "Teenage Dream" together in a video. His YouTube channel has close to 600,000 subscribers and has received an astounding 409,000,000+ views. He is currently the 27th highest subscribed music artist on YouTube.

We open this week, accompanied by Tom (with a brief initial assist from Sam) singing “Another Op'nin, Another Show” from Kiss Me Kate over scenes of the Bombshell cast and crew packing for out of town tryouts in Boston. Notably Ivy packs a photo of her awful mother. Rebecca takes a limo and the chorines meet up in Grand Central Station.
Christian Borle really nails the song and the arrangement incorporates phrases from “Let Me Be Your Star”. The number closes with Karen standing wide-eyed on the stage as tech crew scurry under Derek's direction. With the final notes fading a missed cue results in the theater being plunged into darkness. From out of the dark, we hear Derek: “Oh bloody hell!”
Meanwhile, Julia's at home lying next to Frank in bed, smiling.
Back in Boston Rebecca stands nervously on the bare stage. Derek enters and spots her there; she leaves hurriedly.

As much as the judges raved about 18-year-old Mathai, I think Charlotte Sometimes edged her out, even if by a few inches. As for finding major guy talent, I'd say meh -- not so much this time. The estrogen factor reigned on Week Four of The Voice's blind auditions, wouldn't you say? Total props to Jersey girl Charlotte Sometimes -- she's definitely the singer to beat out of this week's batch. Check out my top three picks after the jump! Top Three 1) Charlotte Sometimes: The 23-year-old Jersey chick, who recovered from a fractured jaw, sang a loungy, pissy version of One Republic's "Apologize," and I was totally diggin' it. I mean, who doesn't like a girl with a bit of biznatch in her? For me, she was hands down the winner last night, and the fact all the judges were fighting for her proved her voice was one to be reckoned with.

Meanwhile, the "DWTS" rumor-mill is churning at full speed. Backstage at the Grammys, New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz revealed that he was asked to join the cast, but declined. Meanwhile, One Republic singer Ryan Tedder is spreading the word that musician Gavin DeGraw will be joining "DWTS" this season. Nicholas Sparks’ novels have had without a doubt had tremendous success both in terms of book sales and the box office takings of their film adaptations. His latest novel to be turned into a film is The Lucky One, published back in 2008, and it certainly looks like it is set to continue what is a brilliant trend for the novelist, whose film adaptations to date include Message in a Bottle, Nights in Rodanthe, Dear John, and of course, the incredibly popular The Notebook, which gave a huge boost to the careers of its leading stars, Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling.
