The whiplash of the Oscar nominations rippled across Hollywood professionals, awards pundits, and elated enthusiasts of 2024’s best films and performances.
The most jaw-dropping — and welcomed — moment of nomination morning came from Walter Salles’ Brazilian drama, “I’m Still Here,” which landed three major nominations: international feature, best actress for Fernanda Torres, and best picture. This marks the second consecutive year in which more than one non-English language movie received a best picture nomination, following 2023’s “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest” (although it’s the first time two international feature nominees have been recognized). It shows that the Golden Globes (at least their winners) still matter.
After Torres won the Globe for best actress, triumphing over A-listers Angelina Jolie (“Maria”) and Nicole Kidman (“Babygirl”), many Academy voters told Variety they were seeking out the film, with feedback being overwhelmingly positive. Diddy took center stage at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards alongside Usher and Kate Beckinsale to present the awards for two prestigious categories. He was arguably over the top while presenting Best Score to Alex Ebert, and later Best Original Song to U2. While Sean Combs was all in the party mood, U2 frontman Bono wasn’t having any of it.

Their awkward hug where Bono was visibly annoyed was one of the most discussed moments in that edition of the Golden Globes. U2 and Bono were on stage to receive the award for the song Ordinary Love from Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom. It was a pretty touching moment for them which the disgraced hip-hop mogul should’ve caught on.

Generations of children grew up with Blue's Clues, the iconic Nick Jr program that first debuted in 1996. The show was initially hosted by Steve Burns, and then by Donovan Patton for its final few years. After ending its initial run back in 2006, the show was revived for a 2019 continuation, entitled Blue's Clues & You!, which starred Josh Dela Cruz as the host, though previous hosts Burns and Patton make sporadic appearances here and there in the new show, which is currently in its fourth season.
The continued success of Blue's Clues & You! has led to a feature film spin-off, Blue's Big City Adventure. The movie sees Blue and Josh head from Storybook World to New York City, where Josh has a big audition to appear in a Broadway show written by Rainbow Puppy. However, after forgetting his 'handy dandy notebook.' Josh and Blue must embark on a grand...

If you cross paths with Crystal Moselle, be warned, she might make a movie of your life. It’s what the New York-based filmmaker did when she met the shut-in family portrayed in her disturbing 2015 documentary and Sundance Grand Jury Prize Winner “The Wolfpack.” She repeated the feat with a girl skater crew she met on the subway, which turned into the delightful 2018 feature “Skate Kitchen.” The HBO series “Betty” is the spin-off of that film and shares the “Skate Kitchen” cast and well as its combination Instagram Story-meets-surf-style photography. It also features Moselle’s impeccable taste in music, amplified by her longtime collaborator, composer Aska Matsumiya.
Moselle and Matsumiya have been working together for the last 12 years. “It started with us being close friends and not having other resources,” says Matsumiya. Moselle’s process, in practice for a number of brand campaigns and short films, such as “That One...

Alex Ebert, frontman of the band Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, performs some fan-favorites in the latest installment of Rolling Stone‘s “In My Room,” an Igtv series in which musicians perform from their home amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Performing from his backyard in New Orleans, Ebert jumps into the funky “Jealous Guy,” a track from his latest solo album, I v I. As a tribute to his 2009 folk-rock album, Up From Below, Ebert plays “40 Day Dream,” saying, “Let’s not fuck this up,” before beginning.

Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros frontman Alex Ebert unveiled a delightfully surreal new video for his song, “Fluid,” off his upcoming solo album, I v I, out January 31st.
The song boasts a blown-out mix of hip-hop, funk and deep house, tied together by a bleating saxophone that ultimately corrals the chaos and guides the song to a close with a soaring solo.
The lyrics find Ebert exploring ideas of gender, nature and identity, and in a statement he said the song “predicts the synthesis of amorphous identity and scientific biology.

Tom Kenny again lives under the sea, though perhaps adjacent to a pineapple this time. The voice of the beloved cartoon character SpongeBob Squarepants has joined Nickelodeon’s upcoming “The SpongeBob Musical: Live on Stage!”
He’s not taking on his usual role, however — the titular one played on Broadway by Ethan Slater, who will reprise that role for the now-scheduled Dec. 7 Nick event, which starts at 7 p.m. Et/Pt.
Kenny is joining the stage company as Patchy the Pirate. He’ll perform an original Sara Bareilles song, “Poor Pirates.” The whole thing was filmed for television in front of a live theater audience.

The Broadway stars and director of 2017’s multiple-Tony-nominated SpongeBob SquarePants musical will re-team on Nickelodeon this December, Nickelodeon announced today. Filmed for TV in front of a live theater audience, The SpongeBob Musical: Live On Stage! will star, among other original cast members, Broadway’s Tony-nominated Ethan Slater and Gavin Lee.
Directed by Broadway’s Tina Landau (herself Tony nominated for the show), The SpongeBob Musical features Slater in the title role, with Lee as Squidward Q. Tentacles.
“I’m so thrilled to be able to revisit the show in a new light and with our original cast members,” Landau said in a statement. “The whole creative and I are excited to go back into the world of Bikini Bottom and discover its new life in TV broadcast form. Director Tina Landau and members of the Broadway show’s original award-winning company will reunite to film the musical in front of a live theater audience with a production that “will capture all-new depths of theatrical innovation where the power of optimism really can save the world.”

While the Golden Globes has an uneven record in previewing the Oscar winners in the top categories, it does give us great insight into one of the below-the-line races: Best Original Score. In the past decade, the two groups have differed only twice. In 2014, when the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. members opted for Alex Ebert’s score for “All is Lost,” while the academy awarded Steven Price for “Gravity,” which won a leading seven Oscars. The following year, the Globes honored Johann Johannsson (“The Theory of Everything”) while the Oscars went with Alexandre Desplat (“The Grand Budapest Hotel”).
This year, Desplat is hoping that the rule holds as he won the Globe for “The Shape of Water.” Our official Oscar odds have him far ahead in the race for Best Original Score. Trailing him are his four Golden Globe rivals: Carter Burwell (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”), Jonny Greenwood (“Phantom Thread...

“Everyone in the room knew immediately: This is special.”
Hamilton star Anthony Ramos is talking about that room where it happened. The couple were all smiles Saturday at the Venice Film Festival as they arrived for the premiere for the crime comedy Suburbicon, which George directed, co-produced and co-wrote alongside his longtime collaborators the Coen brothers.
The outing marks the first time George, 56, and his human-rights lawyer wife, 39, have made a public event appearance since the birth of their twins Alexander and Ella on June 6.

Thanks to the release of the junior novelization for Spider-Man: Homecoming, more and more details are surfacing about the upcoming Marvel movie, which is right around the corner now. Following on from the dubious rumours of the true identity of Zendaya’s character Michelle in the film, we now might know who Donald Glover’s playing.
Reddit user Alex_Helix posted a lengthy synopsis of the Homecoming novelization on the site, which he claims only covers the first arc of the movie. Of the details that he shared, the juiciest is the reveal of the name of Glover’s character.
“Spider-Man finds two of Toomes’ men, Shultz (Bookem Woodbine) and Brice (Logan Marshall-Green), selling Chitauri weapons to local criminal Alex (Donald Glover) and intervenes.”
When it was first announced that Glover had been cast, fans were hoping he might be bringing Miles Morales, the Ultimate Spider-Man, to the big screen.

Sundance deals accrue such legend that it’s easy to forget the ones that materialize out of nowhere. Such was the case 20 years ago to this day, when Miguel Arteta’s first feature “Star Maps” premiered at the festival and landed a $2.5 million deal with Fox Searchlight.
The movie, which tells the story of a Latin American teen (Douglas Spain) who works as a bisexual hustler while harboring dreams of movie stardom, became an overnight sensation at Sundance — and also turned Arteta into a permanent member of the festival family. Since then he’s returned with “Chuck & Buck” (2000) and with “The Good Girl” (2002); tonight he screens his latest effort, “Beatriz at Dinner” out of competition.
The “Star Maps” deal also marked a historic moment for this site. At roughly a year old, IndieWire was establishing itself as a nimble digital upstart that had accrued popularity at Sundance, where it published a daily print edition.

July 4 fell on a Saturday last year, resulting in an Independence Day weekend without an extended holiday. Thanks to 2016 being a Leap Year, July 4 moves to Monday and we're looking at a four-day holiday weekend that not only includes the third weekend for the high-powered performance of Disney and Pixar's Finding Dory, but three new wide releases. However, like last weekend, this week's freshman class will be jostling for runner up position as Dory is looking at a three-peat atop the weekend chart. Meanwhile WB's The Legend of Tarzan and Steven Spielberg's The Bfg*and their combined budgets totaling $320 million*may have a hard time taking down Universal's The Purge: Election Year, which was made for a mere $10 million. After crossing $300 million in just 12 days, Finding Dory enters its third weekend ready to rule once again. After a 46% drop in its second weekend (42% without including Thursday previews) a holiday...

When Alexander Skarsgard attended the San Francisco premiere for The Diary of a Teenage Girl last August, his handsome looks had jaws on the floor for a different reason than usual: he walked the red carpet in a glittery gold dress and a voluminous blond wig. When the Legend of Tarzan actor sat down with Conan O'Brien on Tuesday night, he finally revealed why he chose that particular look for the premiere. "The first Ad on that movie is Cousin Wonderlette, a legendary drag queen in San Francisco," he told Conan. "She was hosting [the premiere] with all her drag queen friends, and there was just something about the excitement about getting ready for the premiere as I was sitting there with my gray suit. They were talking about their wigs and their dresses and everything and I felt left out. So I asked Cousin, 'Can I play? Can I be a part of this?...

Hollywood embraces certain heroic brands time and time again. I think Dumas’ Three Musketeers (spoiler alert: there’s really four of them!) holds the record for movies most frequently adapted from a story. But another property has been capturing fans’ imaginations for over 100 years, and he’ll be swinging into theatres again this summer.
The Legend of Tarzan debuts July 1st. This movie stars Samuel L. Jackson, Margot Robbie and Alexander Skarsgard. Fans are hopeful. Of note, this movie opens with a “civilized” Tarzan in the city London. But the hardcore Tarzan and Edgar Rice Burroughs fans know there’s always something rumbling in the jungle.
In fact, I recently wrote about Tarzan: The Beckoning. Dark Horse is re-issuing the 80s miniseries by master artist Thomas Yeates. You can read my column here. But right now, I’d like to put on my metaphorical jungle pith helmet and explore...
